SUMMARY:Wednesday Night Impro: Maestro
DESCRIPTION:Ten actors converge for a night of scenes\, songs and games based on audience suggestions. After each round you score the players on a scale of 1 to 5\, and the one with the lowest score is eliminated. Eventually only one remains\, to be crowned the Maestro. “Fast-paced\, unpredictable\, and hilarious” says the promo\, and you couldn’t argue with that. As with all Courtyard improv evenings it’s free\, but you need to put your name on the guestlist (via the website); and it’s first-come first-served\, so get there early enough to grab a seat.

SUMMARY:Yoshihiko Tsutsumi: Intersections of Cosmos
DESCRIPTION:Yoshihiko Tsutsumi is an accomplished graphic designer and artist (and a professional antiques dealer\, gallerist and art director too\, as it happens). Influenced by the immersive environment of his uncle’s cinema billboard painting atelier in Kumamoto\, Japan\, he draws inspiration from the captivating interplay of colours and dripping marks on the studio floor. \nTsutsumi’s creative process “unfolds like a meticulously crafted spider’s nest\, guided by an equidistant grid that shapes the evolution of lines and forms\,” says the gallery. “This grid serves as a blueprint\, orchestrating the sequential connection of outlines\, akin to the organic process of cell reproduction found in living beings\, rocks\, and metals.” \nHis layer series explores phenomena materialising through the accumulation of colours\, and these are immediate and impactful; more discreet and perhaps more cerebral are his monochromatic series\, where white pencil traces dance over black canvases or vice versa\, mirrors an architectural process where elements are meticulously plotted and constructed. \nTsutsumi was one of the standouts in XVA’s September group show on capturing movement in art; he’s an interesting\, exciting painter. Recommended. \nTo 9 January. \n

SUMMARY:Sharjah Film Platform 6
DESCRIPTION:The sixth edition of Sharjah Arts Foundation’s annual indie/experimental film festival\, which runs from 8 to 17 December\, features more than 50 films from around the world – a range of independent cinema and experimental filmmaking that “foregrounds the transformative role of cinema in our culture and community”. \nSome 30 of them are in the SFP6 Competition section for the Sharjah Film Platform Awards; all UAE premieres\, these films will be followed by Q&A sessions with the directors. \nSFP6 also offers a series of screenings that highlight noteworthy films produced in and around the region. This Out of Competition section includes Amjad Al Rasheed’s fiction feature Inshallah a Boy (2023) on 15 December and Sonia Ben Slama’s documentary Machtat (2023) the following evening. Three others we’d recommend: Goodbye Julia (dir Mohamed Kordofani\, 2023)\, screening on the opening evening; the powerful For My Country (dir Rachid Hami\, 2022: still above) showing on 10 December; and Animalia (dir Sofia Alaoui\, 2023) on 16 December. \nIn parallel with the film screenings is a series of public programmes that this year focuses on ideas of solidarity and resistance. Featuring regional and international filmmakers\, the panel sessions and talks will touch on the Nakba and the Palestinian experience of rupture\, African cinema and the postcolonial condition as well as the ways in which cinema can convey the spirit of defiance in the face of oppression. \nThe talks programme is at Sharjah Institute of Theatrical Arts in Al Mureijah Square. Download the full details here. \nThe accompanying SFP Industry Hub for industry professionals again has a Pitching Forum\, a feature scriptwriting competition with an open call; the Script Lab\, a professional scriptwriting course; and an annual initiative to support regional and international film distribution. \nSFP6 screenings take place in Mirage City Cinema\, SAF’s open-air theatre in Al Mureijah Square\, and VOX Cinemas at City Centre Al Zahia. Films are booked individually at AED 15 each (there doesn’t seem to be a multi-screening pass). \n

SUMMARY:Rusted Stars
DESCRIPTION:A science fiction musical: long ago people left an uninhabitable earth to make a life in the stars. That sort of worked\, but after centuries the infrastructure of their colonies is in disrepair and standards of living are crumbling. Then one day they receive a transmission from earth: could it be worth returning? Could it be a home for humanity once again? The investigators find there a primitive agrarian society led by the young Queen Amara\, absolute ruler of a feudal society and the figurehead of the Earth Mother religion. Will she and her people be prepared to share the only planet they’ve known\, with the people who once abandoned it? \nNoha Shahwan’s Prologue Productions is responsible. An independent UAE-based production company founded just last year but calling on many years of experience in theatre\, films\, TV and music\, Prologue did the entertaining Will You Marry (With) Me at the Junction this summer\, and was also active in Short + Sweet 2023. Prologue says Rusted Stars will be the first original musical play to be produced in the UAE. \nThe idea and production is by Rohan K Jain; Tariq Abouzeid directs; the score is by Caio Kehyayan\, book by Terry Newman\, lyrics by Newman and Ty Christian. \nThere are further performances at 8pm on 9 December and at 2.30 and 8pm on 10 December. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Slava’s Snowshow
DESCRIPTION:One of the best seasonal shows around – a whimsical blur of laughter\, awe\, and magic that has already been seen by more than 12 million theatre-goers around the world\, reportedly receives a standing ovation following every single performance\, and so far has clocked up more than 25 international awards (among them a West End Laurence Olivier award for Best Entertainment\, a Drama Desk Award in New York\, and a Broadway Tony nomination). \nIt’s also wowed the critics: “the most fun in the theatre you will ever experience” (The Guardian) and “a thing of rare theatrical beauty not to be missed” (Daily Telegraph). The New York Times came up with “simply thrilling … unmissable … induces waves of giggles and sighs of pleasure”. And the Financial Times gave us “Slava’s Snowshow achieved something I’ve rarely seen: a spontaneous eruption of playful energy which lifted the entire audience in a bubble of pure delight. Magic!” All of which is spot on. \nEssentially it’s a group of clowns wearing green and one clown wearing yellow\, in “a celebration of winter and snow”. But Slava Polunin\, the show’s creator\, has created something special from the fabric of dreams and fairy tales in a kaleidoscope of events\, colours\, sounds\, “spaces” and “times”. As Variety put it\, “Slava’s Snowshow is to clowning what Cirque du Soleil is to the circus … Slava’s Snowshow is as theatrical as it is simple\, as involving as it is inspiring”. \nThere are just five shows in Dubai: \n8 December 8pm\n9 December 3pm and 8pm\n10 December 3pm and 8pm \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Two more performances for one of the best seasonal shows around – a whimsical blur of laughter\, awe\, and magic that has already been seen by more than 12 million theatre-goers around the world\, reportedly receives a standing ovation following every single performance\, and so far has clocked up more than 25 international awards (among them a West End Laurence Olivier award for Best Entertainment\, a Drama Desk Award in New York\, and a Broadway Tony nomination). \nThere are performances at 3pm and 8pm today and two more at the same time on 10 December. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Rusted Stars
DESCRIPTION:Second performance for this science fiction musical\, said to be the first original musical play to be produced in the UAE: long ago people left an uninhabitable earth to make a life in the stars. \nThe idea and production is by Rohan K Jain; Tariq Abouzeid directs; the score is by Caio Kehyayan\, book by Terry Newman\, lyrics by Newman and Ty Christian. \nThere are further performances at 2.30 and 8pm on 10 December. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Winter Special – Theatresports: Santas vs Elves
DESCRIPTION:A newish Courtyard tradition: competitive improv. In Theatresports\, teams of improvisors compete against each other for points awarded by a panel of judges. The teams issue challenges to each other on the seasonal theme\, and the judges are looking for how well the improvisors react (usually in terms of narrative\, technique\, and entertainment – judges can hand out warnings or penalties for being boring). One team will get through to win the coveted Theatresports trophy … It’s great fun\, and it’s free. SUMMARY:Tinariwen
DESCRIPTION:The exciting Tuareg band (the name Tinariwen translates to ‘People of the Deserts’ or ‘The Desert Boys’) merge traditional Tuareg melodies and rhythms with guitar-driven rock ‘n’ roll in a style known as assouf among the Tuareg people and dubbed ‘desert blues’ by music critics. The music directly evokes a feeling of longing\, of displacement; borders have been created and redrawn so often around the band’s homelands. \nThe band\, who will be showcasing their new album Amatssou in Dubai\, is Ibrahim Ag Alhabib (vocals\, guitar)\, Abdallah Ag Alhousseyni (vocals\, guitar) Touhami Ag Alhassane (vocals\, guitar) Tahar Khaldi (vocals\, bass guitar) Elaga Ag Hamid (vocals\, guitar) and Said Ag Ayad (vocals\, percussion). SUMMARY:Handel's Messiah
DESCRIPTION:The Astana Opera Orchestra\, the Dubai Festival Chorus\, and conductor Rob Johnston perform the classic mainstay of the festive season – one of the best-known and most frequently performed choral pieces in Western music. Famously Handel composed Messiah in just 24 days without much sleep or food; and while writing the great ‘Hallelujah’ chorus Handel’s servant discovered him with tears in his eyes and he exclaimed\, “I did think I did see all Heaven before me\, and the great God Himself seated on His throne\, with His company of Angels”. Powerful stuff. \nThe Orchestra of the Asrtana State Opera and Ballet has more than 120 musicians\, many of them required for this full-bodied piece. Rob Johnston\, a noted tenor as well as conductor\, has led the Dubai Festival Chorus since 2019; the Chorus is a talented group of singers drawn from across the UAE\, originally brought together for the Dubai debut of the BBC Proms and now numbering over 200 members of 25 different nationalities. \n

SUMMARY:Keigo Nakamura: Confronted with Light\, Baroque in Shadow is Revealed
DESCRIPTION:Nakamura’s first exhibition in the Middle East offers a chance to experience his exploration of light and life – presented as a dialogue with the inner self\, guiding the viewer to their own ‘light of life.’ Mirrors in his art symbolise self-reflection and the perception of others\, “capturing … the essence of life itself”. The small\, flickering light at the centre of these works represents universal warmth and connection. \nTo 9 January. Note that Volery is open by appointment only. \n

SUMMARY:Colorful Threads: The Interwoven Worlds of Art and Culture in the Western Indian Ocean
DESCRIPTION:The third symposium in the Africa Institute’s four-part Colorful Threads season – co-organized by Prita Meier\, Associate Professor of Art History at NYU\, and Laura Fair\, Professor of African History at Columbia University – considers the momentous cultural interactions and microeconomies of exchange among the Eastern African coastline and the islands of the western Indian Ocean; we have come to understand that these places were also important sites for creativity and imagination. \nFrom the rich artistic traditions of music\, photography\, theatre\, dance\, ritual life\, and spirit possession performances (to mention only a few examples)\, this symposium aims to decipher the fine print of an intricately interwoven oceanic tapestry. The focus on aesthetic sensibilities and cultural logic will necessarily engage questions of power\, representation\, production\, consumption\, and “the systems of signification emerging from a panoply of cultural forms and consciousnesses”. \nThis forum will bring scholars from various academic disciplines and geographical locations to ponder both symbolic and cultural capital. The full programme is here. \nIt’s free and open to the public (pre-registration is required). It will also be livestreamed. \n  \n  \n
