SUMMARY:A Life on Tape / Bilder (m)einer Mutter: dir Melanie Lischker (1921)
DESCRIPTION:Melanie Lischker’s documentary reconstructs the life of her mother (who she barely remembers) from over 100 hours of Super 8 and video footage that was meticulously recorded over the decades\, mostly by her father. The result is the poignant story of a young woman who was never able to fully accept her role as a mother as she tried to free herself from the old thought patterns of her rather authoritarian parents in the 1970s. Her ongoing struggle between a desire for freedom and the imperatives of a well-ordered family life have affected the childhood of the director\, her daughter … Both personally and politically\, the film travels through the decades and shows a woman in conflict with the patriarchal structures of her day. \nThis film screens in the NAAS: She Reel series\, a collaboration between several cultural institutions in the UAEwhich has the subtitle ‘Women in Society: Stories That Inspire\, Change That Empowers’. The films in the programme are dedicated to showcasing women’s stories and raising awareness about their roles in our lives.

SUMMARY:La Cité de la peur / Fear City: dir Alain Berberian (1993)
DESCRIPTION:Odile Deray\, a small time public relations executive\, has her work cut out for her – getting some exposure for a pretty terrible small-budget horror movie called Red is Dead. Then she gets a break: the projectionist is murdered\, just as in the film … and more follow\, identical to those in Red is Dead\, and taking place at the Cannes Festival ! Add in a corrupt politician\, a bodyguard for the lead actor who is more interested in girls than his client\, a police superintendent who can’t handle the press … Full of insider references\, this zany satire about the world of cinema and the Festival de Cannes in particular should make for a fun evening. In French\, with English subtitles; and AF members get in free\, while the rest of us pay AED 35. \n

SUMMARY:Open Culture Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Inspired in part by the Open GLAM (Galleries\, Libraries\, Archives\, Museums) movement – which promotes open access\, reuse\, and sharing of cultural collections in digital spaces – the Open Culture project seeks a local context for such ideas; organiser and host Engage101 has been actively exploring the potential of participatory practices and infrastructures in the UAE\, and says the project’s launch marks the beginning of a long-term initiative aimed at encouraging collaborative thinking and reflection on the present and future of the region’s cultural commons. \nThis inaugural meeting takes the form of an interactive workshop session with participants invited to contribute personal and professional insights on topics such as … \n> What happens when we begin to view art and culture as a public good?\n> How does this idea extend into digital realms?\n> Does greater access lead to the emancipation of knowledge?\n> What does “digital commons” really mean – and are there more fitting alternatives?\n> How might the UAE’s cultural ecosystem benefit from embracing digital commons?\n> What value\, challenges\, or possibilities arise when we begin to share our individual data\, research\, image-making\, and projects? \nThat’s a lot of meaty\, interesting questions to consider. The event is organised by Aliaa Shaaban\, who researches cultural heritage policy\, participatory practices\, and the role of emerging technologies and innovation within cultural institutions; and Engage101\, a platform that exhibits and supports independent Gulf-based artists and also produces original academic research on the arts in the region.

SUMMARY:Youth Takeover 2025
DESCRIPTION:The Jameel’s annual Youth Takeover is the manifestation of the Assembly\, an experimental learning programme designed to foster creative leaders aged 18 to 24 in the UAE\, “inviting the creation and curation of projects reflective of their generation’s areas of interest”. The Assembly 2024-2025 cohort comprises multimedia graphic designer Abrar Kebaili\, visual artist and designer Ayesha Fernandes\, multimedia designer and writer Desirée Barreto\, literary artist Ioanna Orphanide\, poet Jared Maxilom\, researcher and writer Manal Nadeem\, architect and researcher Omar Darwish\, exhibition designer Sanjushrree Subash\, and poet Syed Haider. \nThis year’s theme for the Youth Takeover – a physical takeover of spaces on the Jameel’s ground floor – is titled ‘Spoon Spade Shovel’. It covers experiments in how the Assembly members dig\, sift and stir through the world\, “offering a network of creative experiences as tools for excavation\, reflection and play … The exhibition presents a range of interdisciplinary works that use tools – literal and metaphorical – to question how we make and remake meaning”. These works sit uneasily beside one another\, but their differences are invitations rather than obstacles  “whether you sift or stir\, extract or excavate\, your experience will be shaped by the tool you reach for: its size\, scale\, heft and intent. You are invited to inhabit this instability and co-compose the meanings that emerge … What you take from this exhibition depends on what you bring to it”. \nThe artists are: \nAyesha Fernandes with Svabhu Kohli\nDesirée Barreto with Angie Pais and Mouza Al Hamrani\nIoanna Orphanide with Danae Orphanide and Ilya Akimov\nJared Maxilom with Halo-Halo Experiment\, Vinyl Souk and memoryall\nManal Nadeem with Khaled Esguerra and Jed Bacason\nOmar Darwish with Fatma Al Ali and Maitha Ali\nSanjushrree Subash with Danutė Vaitekūnaitė and Farheen Fatima\nSyed Haider with Hessa Lootah\, Souldier and Aqib Anwar \nBesides the commissioned artworks\, the Youth Takeover 2025 features a public programme. SUMMARY:Gravity & Other Myths: The Pulse
DESCRIPTION:Modern circus at its best\, with all the classic virtuosity and circus skills of some other troupes but without the overload of technology and glitz: this show brings together all three of the core ensembles of the Australian company with a choir of 30 voices in “the wholly Australian work of scale that we’ve been longing for”. The award-winning creative team of director Darcy Grant\, designer Geoff Cobham and composer Ekrem Eli Phoenix have extended and amplified the signature spirit of this rather unique company: visceral\, poetic\, heart-stopping feats with seemingly impossible levels of cooperation create an intricate\, organic synchronicity of human movement and sound … yep\, we are impressed. \nThere are further shows at 2pm and 8pm on 10 May and 5pm on 11 May.

SUMMARY:Circus Baobab: Yé !
DESCRIPTION:Vertiginous human pyramids\, bodies being thrown seven metres into the air\, barely believable hand-on-hand acrobatics\, combat\, contortions and more – stunning circus skills\, and all threaded through with a strong sense of place and a passionate exploration of pollution\, power and control over a rare resource: water. The show is Yé ! – which translates as ‘water’ in Susu\, Yoruba and other West African languages – and it comes from Circus Baobab\, a company of 13 talented young dancers and acrobats from Guinea and the diaspora. Circus Baobab works collaboratively to develop shows that blend traditional West African performance forms with contemporary circus skills and choreography. This is edgy\, exhilarating performance art in the service of social messages – but boy\, is it entertaining too. \nYé ! is directed by Yann Ecauvre (he’s also responsible – with Jérémy Manche – for the show’s music). An innovative\, self-taught performer\, Ecauvre is the co-founder of Cirque Inextremiste\, a French circus company renowned for its high-risk performances and signature use of unconventional props. He started working on the show that became Yé ! in 2021\, collaborating with Bakala Camara and the company’s acrobatic specialist Damien Droin. The artists demonstrated their skills to them in the lively working-class Dixinn district and at the Centre Culturel Franco-Guinéen\, and from that Ecauvre and Droin developed a story centred on environmental themes – particularly water scarcity and pollution. \nEcauvre’s direction for Yé ! has a pared-back\, contemporary feel that probably breaks with more traditional\, more exuberant African performance styles. And he has clearly taken inspiration from the everyday lives of the young acrobats\, infusing the show with the kind of urgent environmental and social themes that impact their lives while also maintaining the essential sense of collective energy and physical virtuosity. \nThe result is true performance art: we can marvel at the strength\, the dexterity\, the sheer ability of the artists\, and we can applaud the choreography that creates structures and patterns from the human body. But it’s easy to see that these have real purpose: the acrobats and dancers hold and support each other\, the physical structures they create echo the social structures we need. As the handout puts it\, “interpersonal relations are often the only comfort against the pull of nothingness. Immobility becomes synonymous with death”. \nThis performance will be followed by a post-show Q&A moderated by Chinasa Ezugha\, Assistant Arts Professor of Live Art/Art as Social Practice and a Co-Director of Live Art Development Agency\, London. \nCircus Baobab’s Yé ! is on stage again on Saturday 10 May at 3pm.

SUMMARY:Reading for Pleasure Conference
DESCRIPTION:The second edition of this Emirates Literature Foundation conference brings together a diverse selection of educators and experts from across the globe\, including some of the most influential voices in the fields. The aim: to discuss and offer guides to best practice with the overall aim of fostering a love of reading amongst children. This year’s theme\, Beyond the Classroom\, focuses on the need to extend the scope of reading and associated activities\, considering such issues as reading with STEM\, inclusivity\, the impact of AI on reading\, and topics as explorative as reading art and keeping culture alive for children. Perhaps the tone will be set by the opening session\, which has the title ‘Reading in schools – we’re doing it wrong’; librarian and library adviser Alan Jacques has the hot seat for this one\, which he’s amplified as ‘Literacy rates are up and yet global statistics show that reading level are down … what’s happening?’ \nThe conference runs afternoons only 9 to 11 May. It is definitely one for librarians\, teachers and other professionals\, but there will be important learnings for parents too …

DESCRIPTION:The latest in the NYUAD Art Gallery’s series of conversations with curators features Nada Raza\, Director of the Alserkal Arts Foundation. She’ll be giving an overview of her curatorial journey as a divided ‘South Asian’; her PhD was on transcultural connections\, particularly between the Gulf and South Asia\, which should make for an interesting perspective. DESCRIPTION:SFP Montage is a series of special projects and initiatives linked to Sharjah Arts Foundation’s annual Sharjah Film Platform (SFP) festival that forges new associations among the works and expands their reach beyond Sharjah. This evening’s films: \nUpshot dir Maha Haj (2024\, 34 min: still above)  \nAfter suffering unimaginable loss\, Suleiman and Lubna retreat to an isolated farm; there they tend to their crops and engage in impassioned debates about their five children’s life choices. One day\, a stranger arrives to reveal a harrowing truth from their past … Arabic with English subtitles \nCu Li Không Bao Giờ Khóc (Cu Li Never Cries) dir Phạm Ngọc Lân (2024\, 92 min) \nAfter collecting the ashes of her estranged husband from Germany\, Mrs Nguyen travels back to Hanoi with Cu Li\, his pet pygmy slow loris. SUMMARY:Collected Histories: Personal Archives and Documentation
DESCRIPTION:Collected Histories\, a project co-founded by Hind Mezaina and Jasmine Soliman\, aims to foster discussion on personal documentation and archiving “with an ultimate goal of inspiring and supporting individuals to become ‘citizen archivists’ by cataloguing\, and exploring ways to self-publish and preserve personal collections”. The project includes talks\, workshops\, and public film screenings – which this evening includes all three. \nFilms\nFour short films focused on archives\, memories\, and identity followed by a short discussion between Mezaina\, Soliman and the audience. \nDon’t Get Too Comfortable dir Shaima Al Tamimi (2021\, 9 min) Questioning the continuous pattern of movement amongst Yemenis in diaspora\, the filmmaker fuses archival photographs and sourced footage\, calling attention to the collective feeling of statelessness and sense of being felt by migrants. \nWhere Am I From? / Ana min wein? dir Nouf Aljowaysir (2022\, 13 min) The filmmaker explores her identity by tracing her childhood and family memories by constructing her genealogical journey using two different voices\, her own and an AI ‘narrator’\, revealing stereotypes and biases derived from its algorithmic composition. \nStill Processing dir Sophy Romvari (2020\, 17 min) A box of stunning family photos unseen for decades awakens lost memories as they are viewed for the first time on camera. \nThe Flowers Stand Silently\, Witnessing dir Theo Panagopoulos (2024\, 17 min) When a filmmaker of Palestinian descent based in Scotland unearths a rarely-seen Scottish film archive of Palestinian wildflowers\, he decides to reclaim the footage. The film questions the role of image-making as a tool of both testimony and violence when connected to entanglements between people and the land. \nWorkshop\nThe workshop will explore the importance of archival self-representation\, the objects we keep and why.  Attendees should bring at least one item from their personal archive – family photos\, letters\, diaries\, heirlooms. This event is open to all\, and no prior knowledge about archival practice is required.

SUMMARY:Public Art Abu Dhabi Biennial: Bik Van der Pol’s The poem that jumps the fence
DESCRIPTION:Artist duo Bik Van der Pol (Liesbeth Bik and Jos Van der Pol) engage in collaborative projects on how art constructs public spaces for speculative thought and collective creativity. The poem that jumps the fence features weekly performances on Abu Dhabi Beach and workshops connecting words and sand as real and symbolic material that binds our world; every Sunday afternoon\, a performer writes a poem in the sand\, only for it to fade away. During workshops in collaboration with local poets and writers\, participants generate text for the performances. \n  \n

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Calder / Hiquily: Balancing Act
DESCRIPTION:A clever juxtaposition of works by two masters of the poetry of balance and movement that reveals unexpected harmonies between the artistic languages of Alexander Calder and Philippe Hiquily. Calder’s gouaches on paper\, with their bold colours and rhythmic compositions\, provide a visual counterpoint to Hiquily’s sculptural explorations of balance\, weightlessness\, and abstraction. These works\, essential to Calder’s creative process\, exhibit the same principles that animate his mobiles\, two of which are included in this exhibition – New Old Universe (1953)\, an elegant example of his ‘constellations’\, and Caged Stone on Yellow Stalk (1966)\, a rare standing mobile. With these works are four of Hiquily’s Girouette mobiles\, each representing a different season.
