SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Mouza Al Hamrani: Homepage
DESCRIPTION:The first solo show by the Emirati illustrator and multimedia designer reflects the duality of the digital age — “celebrating the opportunities the internet has provided\, while also expressing the exhaustion and apprehension that come with a prolonged digital presence. \n“I aimed to capture this nuanced experience\, inviting viewers to reflect on their own relationship with the digital world. It’s a portrait of my own experience of the internet in this region during my formative years\, all the way to the current day.” \nMouza Al Hamrani is one of only four UAE-based artists to be accepted for Tashkeel’s popular Critical Practice Programme last year and worked with a mentor to produce a series of artworks that blend of traditional illustration and cutting-edge digital artistry. \n

SUMMARY:Dubai Design Week
DESCRIPTION:Ten years is always a good time to see how far we’ve come. The tenth edition of Dubai Design Week  runs 5-10 November in d3\, and this year’s festival will apparently reflect on a decade of design and its influence on the UAE and GCC’s expanding interior design and furniture market\, now estimated to be worth $26 billion in total. Fuelled by rapid urbanisation\, a strong real estate market\, diversification of the economy and evolving tastes among residents and businesses\, DDW has matured to the point where it can now stand unapologetically alongside better established design festivals. \nMuch of that is down to institutional and government focus on design as a commercial imperative\, a differentiator\, and a key element in Dubai’s image of itself and the projection of that into the wider world; but Dubai Design Week has certainly been instrumental in creating the narrative over the past decade. Here are the key elements for this year: \nDowntown Design 6-9 November The anchor event of Dubai Design Week will take place on the d3 Waterfront Terrace. The region’s leading fair for contemporary interior design and fitout-relevant solutions is complemented by talks\, keynotes and masterclasses at The Forum plus pop-up concepts\, installations and networking events. It’s still primarily a B2B fair\, but it is full of ideas and trends that make the visit worthwhile for those outside the interiors business. Opening hours: 12am-8pm (but note that 6 November is an invite-only day) \nEditions 6-9 November New for this year is the region’s first limited-edition art and design fair\, with more than 50 galleries\, design studios and collectives exhibiting design\, photography\, prints\, ceramics and works on paper. The pitch is that “Editions paves an alternative route to art and design collecting”. Opening hours: 12am-8pm \nUrban Commissions DDW’s annual design competition this year invited designers and architects to propose innovative community furniture that took the idea of ‘the table’ beyond its basic form. It was won by Altqadum\, a research-based design studio from Oman that specialises in architecture\, interior and objects design. Taking inspiration from the musical culture of the Gulf\, where communities traditionally gather around and accompany musicians\, Altqadum’s TukTuKDum is an innovative table that encourages interaction\, inviting audiences to become performers and even an integral part of the table itself. \nAbwab Abwab (‘doors’ in Arabic) is a programme that supports designers from the SWANA region by commissioning installations or pavilions each year reflecting relevant global and regional contexts. Since its inception in 2015\, over 180 designers have participated in Abwab; for 2024\, practitioners were invited to propose designs with a focus on vernacular architecture and how community-centric architectural methods can intersect with new environments. \nInstallations DDW visitors will find more 30 projects that explore ancient technologies\, modern innovations and materiality. Highlights include the Dubai-based architectural and interior design studio Bone with a pavilion made entirely from pre-fabricated earth blocks\, a collaboration with Spanish rammed earth specialists Fetdeterra; a traditional Japanese tea-house made from 3D-printed waste sawdust\, a creation of the Japanese architectural studio Mitsubishi Jisho Design; and an AI-infused ‘second skin’ fabric that responds to the body’s state of being\, shown by the tech-driven multidisciplinary practice DEOND (founded by Ross Lovegrove and Ila Colombo). Other installations promise various organic and upcycled materials including banana fibre\, soybean wax\, henna\, Himalayan salt\, terracotta and scrap metal. \nExhibitions and activations Curated exhibitions include the annual UAE Designer Exhibition\, now in its fifth edition. Supported by Dubai Culture and curated by Omar Al Gurg\, this is an effective showcase of work by emerging UAE-based designers. Other craft/design retail opportunities include an Art Jameel shop\, 421’s Dukkan421 shop\, and Monocle’s shop and café takeover of FRAME in d3. \nTalks\, workshops and masterclasses DDW’s workshops programme is apparently “designed to inspire and elevate skills across design disciplines\, catering to professionals and aspiring creatives of all ages\, interests and experience levels”. It’s housed in a pop-up Maker Space in d3 and there’s usually something for anyone – the workshops do tend to fill up quickly\, not least because most are free. DIDI (which is based in d3) has a collection of workshops and student-led tours\, all free – sign up here. The talks programme tends to be centred on Downtown Design and takes place in The Forum\, the amphitheatre-style space within Downtown Design. \nMarketplace 9-10 November (below) A weekend outdoor “retail experience” where “visitors can discover the very best of the region’s designers\, artisans and homegrown small businesses offering quality and original products”. It’s “consciously curated”\, so in theory there should be no dross. \n \n

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Magnus Gjoen: The Future of The Past
DESCRIPTION:Gjoen invites the viewer to explore the delicate balance between history and modernity\, as envisioned through a distinctive style that fuses street art influences with pop culture and fine art – symbols and themes from the Renaissance and Baroque are reimagined to challenge traditional views of beauty. That aesthetic isn’t too surprising; after studying fine art and fashion design\, Gjoen worked with Vivienne Westwood en route to a full-time commitment to art rather than fashion. The gallery is suitably bullish: “The Future of The Past … transports viewers across timelines\, challenging the thought of what was\, what is and perhaps what could be”.

SUMMARY:Wednesday Night Impro: Maestro
DESCRIPTION:The Courtyard’s regular evening of elimination improv. Ten actors converge for a night of scenes\, songs and games based on audience suggestions. After each round you score the players on a scale of 1 to 5\, and the one with the lowest score is knocked out. Eventually only one remains\, to be crowned the Maestro. “Fast-paced\, unpredictable\, and hilarious” says the promo\, and you couldn’t argue with that. As with all Courtyard improv evenings it’s free\, but you need to put your name on the guestlist (via the website); and it’s first-come first-served\, so get there early to grab a seat. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Sébastien Labrunie: Brèche
DESCRIPTION:“An organic dive through matter\, light and memory\,” says the blurb. “This hybrid narrative sculpture blurs the line between macro and micro perspectives while connecting moments and places of the past.” Labrunie’s first large-scale immersive installation (first seen back in 2019)\, Brèche is a very personal audiovisual work that combines techniques from video games and VR with analogue and digital glitch art. The sound design by the Taiwanese sound artist Lu Yi is a vital element\, merging cinematic drones with ‘noise music’ “As the 3D collage sequences of Brèche expand\, the viewer is slowly drawn into the centre of the ‘breach’ where matter and memories dissolve into pulses of primal\, raw energy …”

SUMMARY:Areej Rajab: Interwoven
DESCRIPTION:New work by the Bahraini artist\, based on an interplay of colours and emotions where the intricate patterns of human behaviour are delicately overlapped with the rhythms of nature: “she reveals the intricate beauty of natural forms and how they mirror the complexities of human emotions\,” says the gallery. By layering colours\, Areej reflects how human emotions and experiences intertwine\, much like patterns in nature. \n“I find inspiration in nature as it is the purest source of colour\,” says the artist. “My focus is on colour combinations and how they blend and overlap rather than just colour itself\, much like how human behaviour and emotions often intertwine and influence one another. Different cultures can interpret colour in various ways\, which adds another layer of meaning to my work”. \nTo 10 November.

SUMMARY:Siena Jazz Festival
DESCRIPTION:SUAD is collaborating with the Italian Ministry of Culture\, the Italian Cultural Institute and Accademia Nazionale del Jazz (Siena Jazz) to host a concert “with the goal of promoting young talent and contemporary jazz music”. The Academy\, the only academic institution for jazz music education in Italy\, runs the international Siena Jazz Festival for two weeks each summer; this inaugural UAE outcrop is a more modest event at the moment\, with two bands. We know that one will be Camilla Battaglia’s four piece as used for her album EMIT: Rotator Tenet (hopefully including top trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire\, who often plays with her); we don’t know the other yet. \nTomorrow (18 October) the mini-festival moves to Dubai\, with three bands playing at the Fridge.

SUMMARY:LA Dance Project: Romeo & Juliet Suite
DESCRIPTION:Benjamin Millepied is a former principal dancer at New York City Ballet whose raison d’etre is to make classical ballet accessible: that’s the essential purpose of his dance company\, LA Dance Project\, and his condensed version of Shakespeare’s story is told in contemporary-classical dance\, set to the music of Sergei Prokofiev and featuring video transmitted live to onstage screens. There are no tutus or pointe shoes in sight\, though the choreography is very clearly derived from classical technique by the 12-strong company. The classic story is also cut to the minimum\, updated into a saga of modern urban love. \nThe live projections capture the dancers in real-time from unexpected places within the theatre; this dynamic interplay between live performance and screens offers fresh perspectives on the tale of the star-crossed lovers. “Romeo and Juliet Suite is unlike anything I have seen\,” said the Bachtrack review of this much-acclaimed production’s summer 2024 season at Sydney Opera House. “It’s geometric sorcery\, and a remarkable fusion of dance and cinematography: accessible\, challenging and entertaining.” \nHighly recommended\, and given that it’s only in town for two performances – there’s another show at 8pm on 18 October – it’s sure to sell out\, even at the somewhat elevated prices. \n \n

SUMMARY:Dracula
DESCRIPTION:Kate Hamill’s “feminist revenge fantasy” infuses the familiar vampire tale with post-modern wit and “a stake through the heart of toxic masculinity”\, as the New York Times put it when it was first performed. “The world women inhabit in this loose\, rollicking adaptation of Bram Stoker’s novel is frightening precisely because it’s not so different from our own …” It’s also great fun\, a racy\, action-packed narrative that should make for a highly entertaining evening. Satyen Chandiramani directs for the Junction’s resident H72 Productions. \nThere are further performances at 7.30pm on 19 and 20 October\, with a 2pm matinée on 20 October.

SUMMARY:Siena Jazz Festival
DESCRIPTION:The Italian Ministry of Culture\, the Italian Cultural Institute and Accademia Nazionale del Jazz are brining us a taste of the Siena Jazz Festival (which runs for two weeks in Siena each summer). Three good young Italian bands will be on the bill: \nGuglielmo Santimone Trio (Guglielmo Santimone on piano – that’s him above\, Stefano Zambon on double bass\, Simone Brilli on drums): post-bop contemporary jazz with a nod to Brazil. \n4Tet (Lorenzo Simoni sax\, Guglielmo Santimone piano\, Giulio Scianatico double bass\, Simone Brilli drums): Santimone and Brill join Simoni’s quartet for a kind of Italian jazz supergroup. \nVittorio Gravagna Rosmarino Trio (Vittorio Gravagna guitar\, Stefano Zambon double bass\, Giovanni Nardiello drums): tipped for big things — minimalist jazz rock with a Mediterranean feel.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Roudaina Fardon: Whispers of Nature
DESCRIPTION:Roudaina Fardon’s first solo exhibition in Dubai: “mosaic-inspired landscapes that highlight the beauty of nature”\, painted in acrylics with the precise application of different geometric shapes with a small brush. “Whispers of Nature is my way of sharing the quiet conversations I feel with the natural world\,” says the artist. “Each painting captures a unique moment in the endless cycle of seasons\, inviting you to listen to the gentle whispers of the landscape. With delicate brushstrokes and harmonious colours\, this collection reflects the serene beauty and profound changes in nature\, evoking feelings of peace\, reflection\, and connection.”

SUMMARY:Dracula
DESCRIPTION:A second performance for Kate Hamill’s “feminist revenge fantasy” – which infuses the familiar vampire tale with post-modern wit and “a stake through the heart of toxic masculinity”\, as the New York Times put it when it was first performed. “The world women inhabit in this loose\, rollicking adaptation of Bram Stoker’s novel is frightening precisely because it’s not so different from our own …” It’s also great fun\, a racy\, action-packed narrative that should make for a highly entertaining evening. SUMMARY:Classical & Beyond
DESCRIPTION:The UAE Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Nicolas Mann delivers the immersive 360º ToDA experience as it “explores hidden stories behind classical masterpieces by Haydn\, Beethoven\, and more”. Specifically\, this semi-educational evening for a chamber orchestra looks at the role of secret societies in Haydn’s Symphony No.45\, Mozart’s Divertimento in F major:\, Beethoven’s Overture to ‘The Creatures of Prometheus’ and Salieri’s Venetian Symphony. Now that’s an interesting programme; it should make for an interesting evening\, especially with ToDA’s all-round visuals. It lasts an hour and 40 minutes.

SUMMARY:Ardal O’Hanlon: The Showing Off Must Go On
DESCRIPTION:Ardal O’Hanlon\, whose CV includes such notable hits as Father Ted and Death in Paradise as well as more recent stints on Taskmaster and Would I Lie to You\, has been touring this widely acclaimed (and very silly) show around the world. It’s all about making sense of the world when his background dictates that there is nothing worse than showing off – and yet he shows off as a way of life. \nIn an age of raging populism\, angry identity politics\, the end of truth\, the collapsing middle ground\, and peak avocado\, Ardal\, an otherwise gentle voice of reason\, is forced to re-join the fray. Terrified of being on the wrong side of history and keen to prove his age\, race\, gender\, and class don’t necessarily define him as a person\, he turns to comedy\, the best\, most therapeutic emergency response to extreme events …

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Majd Kurdieh: Butterflies
DESCRIPTION:A solo show for the Aleppo-born Lebanese-based artist with a very distinctive practice – he paints with cartoon-like characters to talk about the current state of the world\, usually a boy (Fasoon) and a girl (Fasooneh) who are always smiling despite the fact that their world is filled with hardships; they share it with a group of animal characters called the Very Scary Butterfly Gang\, Their main mission is to combat the sadness of the world with their sole weapon\, the flower. For the current show\, Kurdieh’s fifth at Fann A Porter by our count\, he’s concentrating on the butterflies: “In the hope of a future in which the field comes back laughing and the seas are more merciful\, when the fires go out and the birds return to their nests\, and a young painter less careless than me comes and says to you: ‘I painted the butterfly because I love the colour of its wings'”.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Alia Ahmad: Aspects [مظاهر]
DESCRIPTION:The first solo exhibition in the UAE for the Saudi Arabian artist presents a new body of paintings and watercolours that seeks to “peel back the layers in order to expose her personal vocabulary”. Her point of departure is the rapidly changing environment of her home city\, Riyadh\, where traditional ways of life exist alongside industrialisation and modernisation and where native plant life and cultural art forms thrive within one of the world’s fastest growing urban settings. Ahmad’s new works deconstruct the elements that make up her world; “with abstracted vegetal\, floral\, geometric shapes and motifs sometimes resembling stones\, flowers\, and others webs or micro-structures\, she creates her own lexicon of forms … on an intimate scale”.

SUMMARY:Animal: dir Cyril Dion (2021)
DESCRIPTION:16-year-old Bella and Vipulan are part of a generation that knows its very future is at risk – between climate change and the mass extinction of wildlife\, their world could well be inhabitable 50 years from now. At the instigation of director Cyril Dion\, who already nailed his colours to the mast with his 2015 investigative documentary  Tomorrow\, and the eminent primatologist Jane Goodall\, the two teenagers embark in an extraordinary quest: to travel around the world and meet with scientists and activists to find another way of living alongside other species\, more as roommates than predators. The two protagonists are simultaneously very ordinary and very engaging; Dion has produced a powerful argument for coexistence rather than competition\, and his skill is to let us draw our own conclusions. \n \nThe film screens in the NAAS programme under the umbrella title Green Reel: Films for a Sustainable Future\, featuring independent films from around the world that focus on the environment and sustainability. NAAS is a collaboration between a number of cultural institutions in the UAE: the Goethe-Institut Gulf Region\, the Embassies of France in the United Arab Emirates\, the Embassy of Canada to the United Arab Emirates\, the Italian Cultural Institute of Abu Dhabi\, the Embassy of Switzerland to the United Arab Emirates and the Kingdom of Bahrain\, and Alliance Française Dubai. \nNAAS: Green Reel runs from 10 September to 26 November at Alliance Française Dubai. The screenings are all free and subtitled in English. \nUpcoming: (click the title for the link) \n5 November Taste the Waste dir Valentin Thurn (2011)\n12 November More than Honey dir Markus Imhoof (2012)\n19 November Hadwin’s Judgement dir Sasha Snow (2015)\n26 November Dans la brume | Just a Breath Away dir Daniel Roby (2018)
