DESCRIPTION:A second evening of performances for this showcase production created by the award-winning dancer and choreographer Amador Rojas for the Royal Opera of Madrid – claimed to be “the most important performing arts institution in Spain”. The compilation of traditional flamenco features Paula Rodríguez\, a noted artist with a complete education in classical\, contemporary and flamenco dance; for Authentic Flamenco she is joined on stage by other noted performers – dancer José El Escarpín\, Ángel Flores and Antonio Jiménez (guitars)\, and Jonathan Reyes and José Del Calli (singers). The show is quite short\, coming in at 65 minutes or so\, and there are performances at 5.30 and 8.30pm.

SUMMARY:Candlelight: Vivaldi's Four Seasons
DESCRIPTION:One of the most successful productions in the Candlelight Concerts series – “classical music concerts aimed at democratising access to classical music by allowing people all over the world to enjoy live music candlelit performances”.  The Vivaldi favourite was written as concerti for violin and orchestra\, but it’s often arranged for string quartet and this is what we’ll be getting here – the Candelabra string quartet\, “illuminated by thousands of candles”. \nThe programme also includes Karl Jenkins’ criminally underperformed Palladio suite\, which runs at around 20 minutes; with the Vivaldi clocking in at 40-45 or so\, this should give you slightly more than an hour of candlelit concert. SUMMARY:Boogie Box Festival
DESCRIPTION:Boogie Box – the longest running House and Techno party series in the UAE\, probably the wider Gulf region\, and quite possibly in the whole Middle East – is celebrating its 13th birthday with a European-style all nighter. Hassan from Boogie Box says the lineup has been chosen to be representative of Boogie Box’s musical philosophy; the festival provides “a platform to artists and DJs to express themselves with longer sets and musical journeys … a high-calibre and creative show that incorporates mood over flash\, immersive over extreme\, and quality over quantity production”. \nSustainability is a key theme – “after all\, the only footprints we would like to see are the ones marked on the dancefloor” and a percentage of profits will be donated to a social responsibility initiative. \nThere are two stages for the 16-hours. Stage One will be geared towards Big Room Energy\, including international headliner DJ Boring\, the very excellent Levon Vincent\, and techno icon DJ Matrixxman. Stage Two promises a quirkier\, moodier and more diverse selection: Anthea\, Molly and Isolee (aka Rajko Mueller) – all fine picks. Both stages will be supported by a goodly collection of names from the regional scene: Angry Suzy\, Nesta\, Maks\, and Boogie Box residents Cyrill Reaidy\, Hani J\, Tristan Girault\, Shadi Megallaa\, and Boogie Box main man Hassan Alwan himself. \nThe Dunes will have the usual food and beverage options\, a vibrant marketplace\, and a camping area (the AED 125 early bird ticket includes a campsite space\, or you take on of the Dunes’ glamping options: AED 750 gets you an Igloo tent and two general admission tickets\, for instance). There are table packages from AED 4\,000; that gets you a table for four plus ‘VIP Backstage Tickets’ and some drinks (12 beers\, one wine\, one ‘bottle of premium spirit’). \nWhat’s not to like?

SUMMARY:Nowhere And Everywhere At The Same Time No.2
DESCRIPTION:Now this is an unexpected offering from Berklee: the revised version of William Forsythe’s Nowhere And Everywhere At The Same Time\, a kind of DIY performance piece that encourages you to experience space\, movement\, other people\, the absence of other people … \nThe original version was a dance piece created at Tate Modern in 2009\, devised by the eminent choreographer and performed by the dancers of his company. The Tate’s Turbine Hall was filled with dozens of metal pendulums suspended from wire rope; the dancers used the pendulums as catalysts for movement\, their bodies reacting to the objects\, and each other\, as they moved through the field. Forsythe has commented that the work’s choreography is “based on observations; so the dancers are observing the room\, observing each other\, and producing conclusions or expressing their observations”. By conceiving the Turbine Hall as both ‘nowhere and everywhere at the same time’\, this performance sought to unleash the kinetic and metaphorical potentials of the space. \nThe No.2 version does not involve a specific choreography or indeed dancers as such. The field of moving pendulums is retained\, and visitors are invited to move through them at will. In doing so\, they effectively generate an infinite range of individual choreographies. As the Berklee puts it\, “The spectators are free to attempt navigation in this statistically unpredictable environment but are requested to avoid coming in contact with any of the swinging pendulums. This task\, which automatically initiates and alerts the spectator’s innate predictive faculties\, produces a lively choreography of manifold and intricate avoidance strategies …” \nThe piece is accompanied by two of Forsythe’s short films. Solo (1997) is a performance for the camera by Forsythe himself that has close-ups and rapid cuts of his twisting body contrasted with overhead shots that capture his movements across a starkly lit stage. Antipodes I/II (2006) consists of two videos shown on facing screens suspended at different heights; on the raised screen\, Forsythe attempts to hold on to a table attached to the ceiling\, while in the second video he moves between two tables resting on the floor. The result\, which apparently dramatises Forsythe’s childhood belief that someone traveling to the South Pole risked falling off the planet\, subverts the relationship between embodiment and gravity. \nShould be fun. The performance/installation/movement piece is open between 8 November and 18 December; you need to book a one-hour time slot between 10am and 8pm (there is a maximum of 50 people per time slot so you should get the one you want).

DESCRIPTION:Ten actors converge for a night of scenes\, songs and games based on audience suggestions. After each round you score the players on a scale of 1 to 5\, and the one with the lowest score is eliminated. Eventually only one remains\, to be crowned the Maestro. “Fast-paced\, unpredictable\, and hilarious” says the promo\, and you couldn’t argue with that. DESCRIPTION:The first of two Autumn concerts by the explicitly named and highly commendable Emirates Community Symphonic Orchestra under the baton of Jonathon Grover. The programme includes pieces by Bizet\, Delius\, Schubert and George Butterworth. \nThe latter is an English composer who died on the Somme in 1916; he’s not performed so much these days\, partly because he didn’t write much music in the first place and party because he destroyed anything he wasn’t entirely happy with\, but his settings of poems from Houseman’s A Shropshire Lad are well worth seeking out. SUMMARY:Philip Mueller: The Black Flags of Medea
DESCRIPTION:Another excursion through the worlds of one of Carbon 12’s stars.  It’s a gathering of old and new people from paintings past\, featuring the Black Flamingo Sad Boys and the Naxos Racing Team; the work marks a fundamental stage in the journey that Mueller’s characters are undergoing. Unanswered questions loom large\, demanding resolution; the exhibition revolves around this search for meaning\, reflecting a period of introspection. \nMueller’s fascination with German Romanticism permeates his new compositions. Within the tableau of these scenic works sits Medea – a woman scorned\, a symbol of violent action turned into freedom. But Medea’s presence\, despite her tragic history\, is symbolic of renewal and the desire to rise again. Within the same frame\, a cowboy boot is escorted to its final resting place; its ‘death is a final farewell to the persona it once stood for .. \nTo 29 January. \n
