SUMMARY:Boeing-Boeing
DESCRIPTION:Marc Camoletti’s farce\, which first played in 1960\, was a smash hit in his native country and (in the English translation by Beverly Cross and Francis Evans) on Broadway and the West End; it went to Hollywood too in 1965\, in an adaptation with Jerry Lewis and Tony Curtis. Now it’s getting the Dubai treatment with a H72 production at The Junction. \nThe original has a delicious 60s vibe that hopefully will be retained for a classic farce plot: swinging bachelor Bernard is simultaneously engaged to Gloria\, Gabriella\, and Gretchen\, all flight attendants who don’t know of each other’s existence. But then things get complicated; his friend Robert  comes to stay\, there’s a recalcitrant housekeeper who has to keep changing the photographs of the fiancées\, and complications such as weather and a new\, speedier Boeing jet disrupt his careful planning such that all three air hostesses (no one called them ‘cabin crew’ in the 60s) are unexpectedly in Paris – and indeed in Bernard’s flat – at the same time … \nCue confusion\, confessions\, chaos\, and near escapes. It’s a terrific update on the traditional fin de siècle French farce\, redolent of its times\, and director Sarah Potter is clearly very happy that this production is finally getting to the stage; it’s been in the works since 2017\, was scheduled last year\, had to be cancelled a day before the show because of pandemic issues. But it is happening\, and she says “the fantastic cast keep up a frenetic pace and will keep you guessing how it’s all going to turn out until the very end”. \nShe has the sort of cosmopolitan cast that speaks of Dubai: Asad Raza Khan plays Bernard\, Dee Gee is Robert\, the maid Bertha is Sumaya Kubeisy\, and the girls are Priyanka Johri\, Gabriela Ioana and Vicky Clips. \nThere are performances at 7.30pm on 24\, 25 and 26 November with a matinée on the Sunday as well.

SUMMARY:Jethro Tull: Seven Decades
DESCRIPTION:Dating all the way back to the late 1960s\, the darlings of quirky prog rock are still on the road with the Seven Decades tour. As with many long-lived bands\, Jethro Tull has gone through many changes in its roster; and its leader\, multi-instrumentalist Ian Anderson and the man who popularised the flute as a rock instrument (!)\, is the sole member of the original lineup – but then Jethro Tull has always been his band\, reflecting his musical vision. \nOn tour is the current incarnation: Joe Parrish on guitars and mandolin\, John O’Hara on keyboards\, Scott Hammond on drums\, David Goodier on bass\, and Anderson fronting and fluting. It’s the lineup responsible for the bands’s 23rd studio album RökFlöte – rock flute\, of course – released in April 2023 and generally well received. \nThe touring set apparently includes at least one song from each decade of Tull\, some fan favourites mixed with a few rareities. You probably won’t get too much one-legged fluting (Anderson is 76 now) and reportedly the iconic codpiece has apparently been left in the 70s. But you never know …

SUMMARY:Boeing-Boeing
DESCRIPTION:A final pair of performances for Marc Camoletti’s swinging 60s farce\, adapted into English by Beverly Cross and Francis Evans) and now it’s getting the Dubai treatment with a H72 production at The Junction. Swinging bachelor Bernard is simultaneously engaged to Gloria\, Gabriella\, and Gretchen\, all flight attendants who don’t know of each other’s existence. But then things get complicated; his friend Robert  comes to stay\, there’s a recalcitrant housekeeper who has to keep changing the photographs of the fiancées\, and complications such as weather and a new\, speedier Boeing jet disrupt his careful planning such that all three air hostesses (no one called them ‘cabin crew’ in the 60s) are unexpectedly in Paris – and indeed in Bernard’s flat – at the same time … Cue confusion\, confessions\, chaos\, and near escapes. \nThere are performances at 2.30 7.30pm.

SUMMARY:Rima Chahine: Euphoria
DESCRIPTION:The Dubai-based Canadian artist’s third solo show is a series of her signature abstracts\, featuring striking use of colour and aiming to leave the viewer with “feelings of exaltation\, elation and joyousness”. Says the artist: “the remedy for self-fixation – the I\, Me\, Mine syndrome – is to lose oneself in self-transcendence … The name ‘Euphoria’ is meant as an irony for the quick-fix exaltation generation we are part of … I am presenting an alternate possibility through my art”. \nTo 10 December.

SUMMARY:Jade Kim & Kai: SOMEDAY | Love and Labyrinths
DESCRIPTION:A dual exhibition for two interesting Asian artists – Jade Kim from South Korea and Kai from Japan. \nJade Kim’s practice is based around the animated character MIN\, an embodiment of his wife\, whose personality and characteristics inspire his paintings and sculptures in SOMEDAY. Says the gallery: “a peaceful ambience overshadows Kim’s paintings\, aiming to find common grounds with the viewer to sympathise about”. \nKai paints friendly monsters who take us on a surreal journey through a monochrome realm. “As you navigate this labyrinth\, the boundaries between reality and the unknown blur\, inviting you to craft your unique narrative and interpret the fluid\, inky silhouettes that define Kai’s universe …” \nTo 13 December. \nAbove: Kai\, Untitled (2023) \n  \n

SUMMARY:Julian Charrière: Melting Point
DESCRIPTION:For COP28\, the noted climate-engaged Swiss-French artist is presenting an important show in collaboration with Art of Change 21\, a non-profit organisation on art and environment which has curated exhibitions and events at each COP since 2015; and Alserkal Initiatives\, the locally based cultural enterprise. \nFor the calendar year to date\, January to October 2023\, the global mean temperature for 2023 reached the highest on record\, 1.43°C above the 1850-1900 pre-industrial average. Polar regions\, which are key in stabilising climate and sea levels\, are especially affected. \nFor COP28\, Charrière’s exhibition transports the viewer into a frozen world\, where towering glaciers emerge from a polar darkness and the visitor soars over bright Arctic vistas. It features Towards No Earthly Pole (2019: still above) and Pure Waste (2021: below)\, two films which showcase our limited sense of the cryosphere; together they address the atmospheric repercussions of our large-scale extraction of natural resources\, questioning if we comprehend what is being lost as global warming accelerates. \nAdditionally an educational service will be provided with a docent and a QR code to access information on the poles and the climate\, as well as climate actions for visitors. \nCharrière said it was a great honour to exhibit Melting Point at the time of COP28. “This last year has been one of unprecedented climatic events\, more than ever instilling us with a feeling of oncoming chaos. It is because of this ambiguity – of approaching a great unknown – that the reciprocity between art and politics is more urgent than ever. It is through their collaboration which new means of storytelling can emerge\, unheard voices call out\, and even the most abstract feelings to find form. It is with these kinds of collaborations that we can ward off the passivity which fear instils\, and instead celebrate another opportunity to take stock and grow”. \nTo 6 January. \n \n

SUMMARY:Snarky Puppy
DESCRIPTION:Genre-blurring musical collective Snarky Puppy is in town for one night only. Playing together since 2004 and led by bassist Michael League\, Snarky Puppy combines a variety of jazz idioms\, rock\, world music\, and funk that has won it five Grammy Awards (Best R&B Performance in 2014\, Best Contemporary Instrumental Album in 2016\, 2017\, and 2021). \nThey’re exactly a jazz band\, and they aren’t exactly a fusion band\, and they definitely aren’t a jam band. All of that makes Snarky Puppy really quite special – a big band with a difference. The musicians (usually 19 or so drawn from a pool of around two dozen\, playing in regular rotation) are configured atypically\, to say the least. Any given song might include three electric guitars\, three or four keyboard players\, two trumpets/flugelhorns\, two saxophones/flutes\, a violin\, three drummers\, three percussionists and League’s ever-prominent funky bass. \nIt helps that the band’s members are all excellent musicians who maintain busy schedules as sidemen (with the likes of Erykah Badu\, Snoop Dogg\, Kendrick Lamar\, D’Angelo)\, producers (for Kirk Franklin\, David Crosby\, and Salif Keïta)\, and solo artists. \nAt its core\, the defining characteristic of Snarky Puppy’s music is the joy of performing together in the perpetual push to grow creatively. They also seem to have a great time playing together. This is one highly recommended gig. \n
