SUMMARY:Rashid Rana: It Lies Beyond
DESCRIPTION:Rashid Rana characteristically challenges our perceptions of scale through the intermingling of both small and large imagery\, exploring and revealing patterns and similarities. In It Lies Beyond (above)\, the imposing proportions invite viewers to immerse themselves in the intricate imagery and multifaceted symbolism of an ominously serene seascape; the experience is enhanced through Augmented Reality that overlays content on to real life environments – which on closer inspection reveals heaps of garbage which of course refer to the issues being raised at COP28. \nThe accompanying work\, Desperately Seeking Paradise (below)\, raises questions about how we interpret various points of view\, our understanding of scale\, and explores the formal concerns of two and three dimensionality in form. At first it appears to be a minimalist stainless steel sculpture; with a shift in viewpoint it transforms into a panoramic skyline of an imaginary city. The images of high-rise buildings have been derived from hundreds of tiny photographs of houses in Lahore; the micro forms the macro in scale to become the conversation.

SUMMARY:Gazelli Art House: Jawhar
DESCRIPTION:A pop-up exhibition for Alserkal Art Week by London-based Gazelli Art House. The group show aims to spotlight pressing environmental concerns and features Recycle Group; Libby Heaney; Kalliopi Lemos; Aida Mahmudova; Elnara Nasirli; Aidan Salakhova; and Matteo Zamagni. \nRecycle Group is dedicated to repurposing discarded materials\, highlighting the potential of reuse in the realm of contemporary art. Their sculptural works use the future as a lens to ponder contemporary society’s technological existence. \nLibby Heaney’s digital artworks and sculptural interventions often explore the intersection between technology and the environment. Heaney prompts viewers to contemplate humanity’s relationship with nature\, emphasising the need for sustainable living in the face of technological advancement. \nKalliopi Lemos’ artistry is also deeply rooted in environmental concerns. Her sculptures\, installations\, and mixed-media works are poignant visual metaphors that draw attention to the impact of environmental degradation on communities and ecosystems. \nAida Mahmudova’s practice often reflects the delicate balance between nature and human intervention\, urging viewers to contemplate the fragility of the environment and the importance of preserving it for future generations. \nElnara Nasirli’s art practice revolves around the concept of interconnectedness\, exploring the relationship between humans\, nature\, and technology. \nAidan Salakhova’s marble and granite sculptures make plain that addressing wider concerns are only achievable once we transcend and unveil societal enigmas. \nMatteo Zamagni’s artworks serve as evocative examples of how art can be both aesthetically compelling and environmentally responsible. Zamagni looks to re-embed the viewer and their technologies within\, rather than outside of\, nature. \nTo 26 November. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Juma Al Haj: The Return
DESCRIPTION:A short run for this pop-up solo exhibition by the Emirati artist\, noted for his calligraphy-like abstracted text in paintings and drawings. His abstract notations appear unconscious\, though his process is in fact method-based\, calculated and always originating from his personal journals; this exhibition chronicles self-reflections on existence\, triggered by loss\, and it signifies a clear development in his practice – his choice of sand as a medium\, the transition from script to tally marks\, the shift to geometric abstraction. \nThe exhibition is mounted for Alserkal Art Week by Iris Projects\, formerly known as Iris Art Advisory. To 26 November. \nAbove: Juma Al Haj\, Painting of Sad Letters (2023) \n  \n

SUMMARY:Reviewing Landscape
DESCRIPTION:A group exhibition of landscapes from a genuinely eclectic list of painters – Alexis Delahogue (France\, d.1936)\, Ammar Farhat (Tunisia\, d.1987)\, Antoine ‘Mayo’ Malliarakis (Egypt\, d.1990)\, Atef Maatallah (Tunisia\, b. 1981)\, Baya Mahieddine (Algeria\, d.1998)\, Cécile Bougourd (France\, d.1941)\, Hedi Turki (Tunisia\, d.2019)\, Jellal Ben Abdallah (Tunisia\, d.2017)\, Moses Levy (Italy\, d.1968)\, Pierre Boucherle (France / Tunisia\, d.1988)\, Yahia Turki (Turkey / Tunisia\, d.1969) and Zoubeir Turki (Turkey / Tunisia\, d.2009). \nReviewing Landscape looks to explore a sliver of landscape paintings history. The story of landscape painting is one of slow development into distinct styles throughout time\, with some of its iterations culminating out of antiquity and into the formation of classic and historic landscape. Spawning new ways of portraying geography through paths previously carved out by orientalist predecessors\, painters versed in impressionist and expressionist practices expanded their milieu of carefully observing nature. \nTo 15 January. \nAbove: Zoubeir Turki\, View from Sidi Bou Said\, Tunisia \n  \n

SUMMARY:Clifford Ross: Hurricane Waves
DESCRIPTION:The singular goal of the American multimedia artist’s solo show is work that relates to the sublime in nature. This exhibition is a collection of dramatic photographs depicting the power of the ocean manifesting through its ever-changing forms during storms – a series that Ross began back in 1996\, entering the surf during extreme weather\, often up to his neck\, while tethered to an assistant on land. \nThe result was a series of stunningly dramatic black-and-white photographs that are among Ross’s best-known works. His photographic techniques expanded over time\, using digital methods\, inkjet printing\, and ultimately developing his unique method of printing on wood. \nTo 15 January. \n

SUMMARY:Maxi Cohen: The Poetry of Water
DESCRIPTION:Maxi Cohen’s first solo show in the UAE is a collection of water art captured in the UAE that includes paintings\, large format photographs\, multimedia works\, immersive installations\, mixed-reality\, and video furniture. \nFor 25 years Cohen’s engagement with water\, as a medium\, has involved filming and photographing rivers\, oceans\, springs\, and waterfalls all around the world from Argentina to Zambia\, Iceland to Antarctica. She came to Dubai during Expo 2020\, to learn more about current climate change innovations and issues of global sustainability\, and she discovered that the bodies of water in the UAE were none like she had experienced elsewhere in the world. “The greatest wonder was photographing in the Jubail Mangrove Park\, where\, when I arrived\, there was no water and hours later\, it flooded; an ever-changing landscape devoid of lushness\, weirdly different\, and ultimately inspiring. As I looked through my camera\, the vegetation reminded me of Arabic calligraphy in the fluid way it curved and danced. When I saw the large-scale prints I had made from my photographs\, I started to paint on their surfaces\, calling on the spirit of water to speak through the art.” \nTo 15 January.

SUMMARY:Diane Tuft: Frozen in Time
DESCRIPTION:The mixed media artist’s solo show is a collection of photographs documenting the expansive beauty of our planet and the dire situation that it continues to face if we do not provide a sustainable environment for its future. \nDiane Tuft uses her camera to capture these results and distil them into images that are surreal\, awe-inspiring\, beautiful\, but most importantly\, thought-provoking; by travelling to the most remote places throughout the world including both the North and South Poles\, she has been able to document the visual effects of climate change and global warming on our planet. While ultraviolet light is responsible for the vibrant\, ethereal colours in these photographs\, its effect on the planet and human health is of serious and growing scientific concern. \nDiane Tuft’s work focuses on the effects of ozone depletion and global warming as they are accelerating detrimental ultraviolet and infrared radiation absorbed by the Earth’s atmosphere. While ultraviolet and infrared spectra cannot be seen by the human eye\, it can be almost magically captured by digital image sensors and certain types of film. She explores these spectra in geographic regions where ultraviolet and infrared light are most prevalent\, including the Great Salt Lake\, Iceland\, Greenland\, Tunisia\, New Zealand\, Antarctica and the Arctic. \nTo 15 January.

SUMMARY:Alserkal Art Week
DESCRIPTION:This year’s Alserkal Art Week runs from Monday 20 November to Sunday 26 November at Alserkal Avenue. It’s been refocussed at short notice on Gaza and related issues\, in particular with a major exhibition in Concrete. The full programme is here\, but we’ve picked out some highlights; most events are free but many require preregistration because space will be limited. \n\n20 Nov 5pm to 10pm Alserkal Lates \nThere are more than 15 new gallery exhibitions across the Avenue staying open into the evening\, along a couple of guest galleries which will be open for the week – Gazelli Art House in warehouse 45\, Iris Projects in warehouse46. (We have these listed individually by exhibition name in the Agenda.) The residents of the Fall 2023 cycle at Alserkal Arts Foundation will also be hosting open studios\, and the retail and F&B outlets will be open late\, too. Alserkal Lates is always a pleasure. \n\n20-26 Nov 10am to midnight On This Land \nA “triangulated response” by the Palestinian Museum\, Barjeel Art Foundation\, and Alserkal Arts Foundation\, this exhibition actually opens at 6pm on the evening before; it brings together the digital archive of The Palestinian Museum and works from the Barjeel Art Foundation’s collection with the aim of “harnessing the power of spontaneous collaboration not only to protect what is being silenced\, but to generate a triangulated and amplified response … [the exhibition] opens an unexpected window onto Gaza to prompt a collective imagination of a possible future through the prism of a past made manifest.”. There are guided tours of the exhibition at 3.30pm every day. \n\n20 Nov 5pm 6pm 7pm | 25 Nov 7.30pm 8.30pm | 26 Nov 6pm 7pm Slow art walks \nReflective gallery tours that last about an hour; a really successful way to see the galleries – interesting\, informative\, unstressy. \n\n20 Nov 9-10pm Farha \nDirected by Darin J. Sallam\, this coming-of-age film was based on a true story of a 14-year-old girl caught up in the events of the nabka. Screens in The Yard courtesy of Cinema Akil. \n\n20 and 26 Nov 7pm RHYME: Sima Dance Company \nA 30-minute performance described as “a theatrical laboratory” and choreographed by Sima’s artistic director Alaa Krimed\, RHYME shows Arab and Eastern culture heritage through an artistic lens. Music\, narration and movement “translates its melodic and experimental character in a dynamic performance”. \n\n22 Nov 7.30-9pm Gaza Mon Amour \nDirected by Arab & Tarzan Nasser\, this film was Palestine’s official submission to the Oscars in 2019; based on a true story\, it’s a charming\, reflective film about 60-year-old Gazan fisherman Issa and his secret love for the dressmaker Siham. Screens in The Yard courtesy of Cinema Akil. \n\n23 Nov 4pm to 6.30pm Majlis Talks \nTitled Fierce Grace\, curated by Mari Spirito of Protocinema\, these five 30-minute sessions will see conversations with curator Duygu Demir\, artist Stéphanie Saadé\, artist Marianne Fahmy\, and author Kaya Genc. Topics range from attention to the overlooked details of life (like the skin cells left on our phone’s touch screen)\, to unlearning social conditioning\, futurism on rising seas\, invisibility as a means of survival\, and interconnecting across geographies. \n\n25 Nov 8pm-9.10pm Foragers \nShot in the Golan Heights\, the Galilee and Jerusalem\, Jumana Manna’s film uses fiction\, documentary and archival footage to depict the dramas around the traditional practice of foraging for wild edible plants\, deploying wry humour and a meditative pace to portray the impact of Israeli nature protection laws on these customs. Screens in The Yard\, courtesy of Cinema Akil. \n\n. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Boeing-Boeing
DESCRIPTION:Marc Camoletti’s farce\, which first played in 1960\, was a smash hit in his native country and (in the English translation by Beverly Cross and Francis Evans) on Broadway and the West End; it went to Hollywood too in 1965\, in an adaptation with Jerry Lewis and Tony Curtis. Now it’s getting the Dubai treatment with a H72 production at The Junction. \nThe original has a delicious 60s vibe that hopefully will be retained for a classic farce plot: swinging bachelor Bernard is simultaneously engaged to Gloria\, Gabriella\, and Gretchen\, all flight attendants who don’t know of each other’s existence. But then things get complicated; his friend Robert  comes to stay\, there’s a recalcitrant housekeeper who has to keep changing the photographs of the fiancées\, and complications such as weather and a new\, speedier Boeing jet disrupt his careful planning such that all three air hostesses (no one called them ‘cabin crew’ in the 60s) are unexpectedly in Paris – and indeed in Bernard’s flat – at the same time … \nCue confusion\, confessions\, chaos\, and near escapes. It’s a terrific update on the traditional fin de siècle French farce\, redolent of its times\, and director Sarah Potter is clearly very happy that this production is finally getting to the stage; it’s been in the works since 2017\, was scheduled last year\, had to be cancelled a day before the show because of pandemic issues. But it is happening\, and she says “the fantastic cast keep up a frenetic pace and will keep you guessing how it’s all going to turn out until the very end”. \nShe has the sort of cosmopolitan cast that speaks of Dubai: Asad Raza Khan plays Bernard\, Dee Gee is Robert\, the maid Bertha is Sumaya Kubeisy\, and the girls are Priyanka Johri\, Gabriela Ioana and Vicky Clips. \nThere are performances at 7.30pm on 24\, 25 and 26 November with a matinée on the Sunday as well.

SUMMARY:Jethro Tull: Seven Decades
DESCRIPTION:Dating all the way back to the late 1960s\, the darlings of quirky prog rock are still on the road with the Seven Decades tour. As with many long-lived bands\, Jethro Tull has gone through many changes in its roster; and its leader\, multi-instrumentalist Ian Anderson and the man who popularised the flute as a rock instrument (!)\, is the sole member of the original lineup – but then Jethro Tull has always been his band\, reflecting his musical vision. \nOn tour is the current incarnation: Joe Parrish on guitars and mandolin\, John O’Hara on keyboards\, Scott Hammond on drums\, David Goodier on bass\, and Anderson fronting and fluting. It’s the lineup responsible for the bands’s 23rd studio album RökFlöte – rock flute\, of course – released in April 2023 and generally well received. \nThe touring set apparently includes at least one song from each decade of Tull\, some fan favourites mixed with a few rareities. You probably won’t get too much one-legged fluting (Anderson is 76 now) and reportedly the iconic codpiece has apparently been left in the 70s. But you never know …
