SUMMARY:Broker: dir Hirokazu Kore-eda (2022)
DESCRIPTION:One rainy night\, Moon So-young (Lee ‘IU’ Ji-eun) leaves her baby Woo-sung outside a ‘baby box’ in Busan\, a safe place set up in Korean churches for new mothers to leave unwanted infants. But instead\, he’s stolen by Sang-hyun (Song Kang-ho) who runs an unofficial adoption brokerage with his business partner (Gang Dong-won). Remorseful at abandoning her child\, So-young tracks the pair down and goes on a road trip with them to meet the baby’s potential parents\, collecting a seven-year-old stowaway from a nearby orphanage along the way.  As they search for Woo-sung’s new family\, the unlikely group evolves into something of a family themselves – unaware they’re being tailed by two detectives (Bae Doona\, Lee Joo-young) who are determined to stop them. A heartwarming\, funny and moving family road movie cum crime comedy\, Broker is an outstanding film from Academy Award nominated filmmaker Hirokazu Kore-eda. In Korean with English subtitles.

SUMMARY:Dalma: dir Humaid Alsuwaidi (2023)
DESCRIPTION:Dana moves to Dalma island when she inherits a house\, renovates the property\, and starts renting it out to tourists. An innocuous lunch at the only restaurant she finds sets her on a path of collision with many of the island’s inhabitants – especially Ghaith\, a doctor who refuses to leave the island despite the many opportunities on the mainland. It’s partly about social traditions and being a woman in a man’s world\, but the tensions that emerge mean it develops into a study of interesting characters with layers of complexity that emerge as the story progresses … \nThe film\, written and directed by the UAE-based filmmaker Humaid Alsuwaidi\, was shot on location in Dalma Island over a brisk 49 days\, with a skeleton crew and a supporting cast largely made up of non-actors from the island. The screening will be followed by an in-person conversation with Alsuwaidi; it’s presented by the NYUAD Film and New Media Program in the CinemaNA series of contemporary Arab film. \n

SUMMARY:The Fridge Concert Series Season 44: David Sagamon
DESCRIPTION:The Fridge gig series kicks off with the totally brilliant David Sagamon\, aka SD Drum Show. He sometimes plays with a small band\, sometimes alone with a rhythm box; he’s great at just about all musical styles\, but exceptional at fast\, complicated stuff like jazz and hip-hop. SUMMARY:The Fascinating Colours of Diamonds
DESCRIPTION:What is the origin of the colour of diamonds? Can it be measured\, quantified and appraised? Is rarity the only aspect to explain their appeal? This talk in L’ÉCOLE Middle East’s regular evening series\, presented by gemologists Chandra Horn and Tania Heikal (both lecturers at L’ÉCOLE)\, attempt to unlock some of their secrets … The talk is preceded by a welcome reception with drinks.

SUMMARY:Preserving the Past\, Embracing Change\, Honoring Traditions
DESCRIPTION:Managing the tensions between traditions and progress (whatever that means) is a particularly acute issue for the Gulf states\, awash with money and keen to welcome the world but concerned to maintain a culture rooted in the last. Zaki Aslan\, Professor of Practice at the American University of Sharjah\, Advisor (Cultural Heritage)\, and former Founding Director of ICCROM-Sharjah (the local arm of the International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property)\, will discuss the need for adaptation and continuity within cultural practices and identities in the region; he’ll suggest how societies in this part of the world can devise policies and projects to safeguard traditions — from innovative and integrated preservation approaches to the revitalization of inter-generational knowledge.

SUMMARY:Wednesday Night Impro: Maestro
DESCRIPTION:The Courtyard’s regular evening of elimination improv. Ten actors converge for a night of scenes\, songs and games based on audience suggestions. After each round you score the players on a scale of 1 to 5\, and the one with the lowest score is knocked out. Eventually only one remains\, to be crowned the Maestro. “Fast-paced\, unpredictable\, and hilarious” says the promo\, and you couldn’t argue with that. As with all Courtyard improv evenings it’s free\, but you need to put your name on the guestlist (via the website); and it’s first-come first-served\, so get there early to grab a seat. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Zineb Sedira: A way of surviving\, a way of life …
DESCRIPTION:Sedira’s films represent a profound archival exploration of identity\, and cultural activism. Born in 1963 to Algerian parents\, her work is deeply rooted in her self-narration but also sheds light on broader\, interconnected global anxieties surrounding cultural emancipation and diaspora. \nThis exhibition of Sedira’s pioneering cinematic practice is centred on the award-winning Dreams Have No Titles (2022)\, presented as a constructed full-scale cinema box in the Cultural Foundation’s atrium. Originally conceived for the French Pavilion at the 2022 Venice Biennale\, Dreams Have No Titles is an immersive installation comprising film\, sculpture\, photography and performance\, that interweaves the artist’s biography with activist films produced across France\, Algeria and Italy in the 1960s and 1970s\, a pivotal moment in the history of avant-garde film production. \nAlso featured are mise-en-scène (2019); Image Keepers (2010); and Mother Tongue (2002). These films all carry key concepts in the artist’s practice as they illustrate the complexities of migration\, memory\, and the intergenerational transmission of knowledge. \nTo 8 March.

SUMMARY:Roudaina Fardon: Whispers of Nature
DESCRIPTION:Roudaina Fardon’s first solo exhibition in Dubai: “mosaic-inspired landscapes that highlight the beauty of nature”\, painted in acrylics with the precise application of different geometric shapes with a small brush. “Whispers of Nature is my way of sharing the quiet conversations I feel with the natural world\,” says the artist. “Each painting captures a unique moment in the endless cycle of seasons\, inviting you to listen to the gentle whispers of the landscape. With delicate brushstrokes and harmonious colours\, this collection reflects the serene beauty and profound changes in nature\, evoking feelings of peace\, reflection\, and connection.” To 19 October. \nAbove: Roudaina Fardon\, Verdant Whisper (2024)

SUMMARY:Claude Cozens Trio feat. Ghazi Al-Mulaifi and Tonatiut Zardoìn
DESCRIPTION:The multi-faceted jazz-fusion Claude Cozens Trio from Cape Town performs in the UAE for the first time. The trio (Cozens on drums\, Kyle Shepherd on piano and keyboards\, Benjamin Jephta on acoustic and electric bass) is joined by new friends from the UAE\, Ghazi Al-Mulaifi (guitar) and Tonatiut Zardon (trumpet). \nA multi-instrumentalist with roots in improvised music\, Cozens’ drumming owes much to the rhythms of the goema\, a type of hand drum characteristically used in South Africa’s Cape jazz scene — “Cozens uses the historic language of Cape jazz to have some very fresh conversations” as one commentator put it. \nThis is something of a reunion; the trio actually split up ten years ago to working on different projects. The members have joined forces in other formats with other artists and projects over the years but have not come together as a trio in over a decade. It’s also a reunion with NYUAD itself\, where Cozens has in the past had Adjunct Faculty status and where Ghazi Al-Mulaifi is himself a Visiting Assistant Professor. \nThe gig is sold out\, but as ever there may be returns …

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Mohamed Yousif and Maggie Otieno: Solace in Soil
DESCRIPTION:A duo exhibition for Emirati artist Mohamed Yousif and Kenyan sculptor Maggie Otieno that “celebrates the grounded connections between the practices of the two artists and the cross-cultural exchange between the Middle East and Africa”. Or as curator Shamma Al Mheiri puts it\, “Maggie Otieno and Dr Mohamed Yousif share leitmotifs of expressing generational sentiments and experiences through tangible expressions. Perhaps distinct in visual identities\, Otieno and Dr Yousif manifest connections deeper than the aesthetic portrayals in a state of continual solace …” The gallery is equally effusive: “This exhibition fosters a symbiotic exchange between the artists and their artistic practices\, intimately linked to their earthy foundations\, enabling their work to converse and showcase the interconnectedness between the regions”. \nMohamed Yousif is regarded as a pioneer of UAE sculpture and is one of the founders of the Emirates Fine Art Society. His 3D work is typically carefully crafted and delicate wooden sculptures\, many woven out of palm tree fronds handpicked in the UAE desert. He has featured in several exhibitions\, including The National Pavilion of the UAE at the 2015 and 2017 Venice Biennales. \nMaggie Otieno characteristically works with long abstract figures comprised of distressed railway sleepers\, originally from India and used to lay the ‘iron snake’ railway line in Kenya at the end of the 19th century – carrying within them stories of travellers\, labourers and communities. “Through her deft manipulation of form and texture\, she endeavours to imbue her sculptures with a sense of temporal continuity\, affording them a palpable resonance with the viewer’s own lived experiences”.

SUMMARY:Sharjah International Film Festival for Children and Youth (SIFF)
DESCRIPTION:SIFF is back for its eleventh edition with an expanded official selection of 98 films (last year had just over 80) selected from 1\,834 submissions from 73 countries. Zimbabwe takes part for the first time; Palestine’s selection as Guest of Honor makes good sense\, given both consistent success of Palestinian films and the miserable situation in the country. Sheikha Jawaher bint Abdullah Al Qasimi\, DG of the Festival noteds that “Palestinian cinema continues to deliver thought-provoking\, visually captivating works that reflect the pulse of Palestinian society”. \nThe Green Carpet platform\, a highlight of the festival\, will feature four premieres – Amakor\, a Kuwaiti comedy drama directed by Ahmed Al-Khodary; The Trainers\, an Italian film directed by Andrea Joplin; The Teacher\, directed by the British-Palestinian filmmaker Farah Nabulsi (reviewed as “riveting\, eye-opening … an intimate exploration of life in occupied Palestine” by The Hollywood Reporter); and Diplodocus\, an engaging animation about a little green dinosaur from the Polish filmmaker Wojtek Wawszczyk (above). \nThere’s a good selection of films in competition – 11 in the International Short Films category\, 17 Arabic shorts\, 14 animated shorts\, four animated features and a dozen live-action features\, 11 documentaries\, 19 in the student category\, and a cheery 10  for Films Made by Children and Young People. \nThe festival’s film market includes some practical workshops including a panel session on independent film distribution and another on the future of the Palestinian narrative in cinema. \n

SUMMARY:The Wizard of Oz: dir Victor Fleming (1939)
DESCRIPTION:A newly restored version of the classic fantasy road-trip movie. The Guardian‘s summary says it all: “Victor Fleming has made … the most delightful film of its kind since Disney’s Snow White. The blend of old-fashioned\, classic storytelling with cutting-edge technology is undeniably enthralling. A work of almost staggering iconographic\, mythological\, creative and simple emotional meaning\, this is one vintage film that fully lives up to its classic status”. The sets might look a tad clunky to the modern eye\, but it’s easy to suspend rationality in the company of such warm\, affectionate storytelling with clever undercurrents of psychology and philosophy. Great performances\, too. Recommended\, and yet again a hat-tip to Cinema Space for booking this (free-to-view) classic.

SUMMARY:Porous Paradigms: Arab Art in Global Context
DESCRIPTION:Part of a series of events organised by Dubai Culture and Fiker Institute to “exchange expertise\, empower creative talent\, and support Dubai’s cultural and creative industries”. This one features a panel of Emirati artists and creatives\, including cultural researcher and writer Dr Khawla Al Marri; artist Zeinab Al Hashimi; and Shamma Yahya Al Mheiri\, Senior Officer of the Arts & Literature Sector at Dubai Culture. The moderator is Alia Al Shamsi\, author\, poet and Cultural Programming Manager at Louvre Abu Dhabi. The panellists will discuss “the fluidity and permeability of cultural expression\, exploring how Arab art operates within and beyond geographic\, historical\, and ideological frameworks” – based on the premise that cultural identities are constantly being reshaped by external influences. As the blurb puts it\, “Arab artists\, at the forefront of this transformation\, are recontextualising their heritage and making significant contributions to global artistic narratives”.

SUMMARY:Estas Tonne
DESCRIPTION:This is the Dubai stop on Eastas Tonne’s current international tour\, with one concert in each city – Yerevan\, Tbilisi\, Athens\, Istanbul\, Limassol\, and Dubai. Born in Ukraine\, he does not identify himself with any particular nation; he says that he is a citizen of the whole world\, and certainly there are manifold influences in his guitar playing – classical flamenco\, even electronica. He describes himself as a modern troubadour\, a well-travelled and virtuosic player with a highly emotional approach that easily veers into the spiritual. As the blurb puts it\, “the main feature of Estas Tonne’s musical mission is its awakening\, unifying\, healing\, and transformational aspects”. \nAs usual with Zabell Theatre gigs\, the admission price includes a 20% discount on F&B at Jumeirah Zabeel Saray

SUMMARY:Didi: dir Sean Wang (2024)
DESCRIPTION:For his feature debut\, winner of the 2024 Sundance Film Festival Audience Award\, Sean Wang has crafted a poignant and humorous narrative that captures the essence of adolescence in California circa 2008. Thirteen-year-old Chris navigates the treacherous waters of teenage life\, from awkward dating to ruining friendships\, while discovering a passion for skateboard filming. Wang’s background in documentary lends authenticity and an insightful touch\, reminding us that the journey to self-discovery is paved with both laughter and tears.

SUMMARY:Young Frankenstein: dir Mel Brooks (1974)
DESCRIPTION:The cast and director are obviously having great fun in this affectionate tribute to the classic Hollywood monster movies of the 1930s and 40s. Gene Wilder is the titular inheritor of his grandfather’s Transylvanian castle\, where he attempts to recreate his famous ancestor’s attempts to reanimate a dead body. It has all the usual (perhaps in this case slightly unusual) suspects: the reluctant scientist has a high-strung fiancé (Madeleine Kahn)\, there’s a pop-eyed shifty humpback called Igor (Marty Feldman) and a dizzy lab assistant (Terri Garr)\, the castle has a hideous head housekeeper (Cloris Leachman)\, and\, of course\, there’s a monster – albeit one with a kind heart (Peter Boyle).

SUMMARY:Siccità | Dry: dir Paolo Virzi (2022)
DESCRIPTION:In a dystopian present\, it hasn’t rained in Rome for three years: the drought has reduced water reserves to a minimum and there’s an epidemic of sleeping sickness carried by cockroaches. Through a city dying of thirst and prohibitions moves a chorus of people\, young and old\, marginalized and successful\, victims and profiteers. Their lives are linked in a single design\, while each seeks his or her deliverance … ” \nThe film is “an intelligent\, ambitious modern melodrama with a bracingly cynical streak\,” said one reviewer; another called it “an apocalyptic comedy”\, which probably doesn’t do justice to a clever\, inventive and handsomely staged film\, with an extensive high-calibre ensemble cast that includes Silvio Orlando\, Valerio Mastandrea\, Sara Serraiocco and Monica Bellucci. It asks questions with its vision of a future\, but at the same time is entertainingly engaging. \n \nThe film screens in the NAAS programme under the umbrella title Green Reel: Films for a Sustainable Future\, featuring independent films from around the world that focus on the environment and sustainability. NAAS is a collaboration between a number of cultural institutions in the UAE: the Goethe-Institut Gulf Region\, the Embassies of France in the United Arab Emirates\, the Embassy of Canada to the United Arab Emirates\, the Italian Cultural Institute of Abu Dhabi\, the Embassy of Switzerland to the United Arab Emirates and the Kingdom of Bahrain\, and Alliance Française Dubai. \nNAAS: Green Reel runs from 10 September to 26 November at Alliance Française Dubai. The screenings are all free and subtitled in English. \nUpcoming: (click the title for the link) \n22 October Animal dir Cyril Dion (2021)\n5 November Taste the Waste dir Valentin Thurn (2011)\n12 November More than Honey dir Markus Imhoof (2012)\n19 November Hadwin’s Judgement dir Sasha Snow (2015)\n26 November Dans la brume | Just a Breath Away dir Daniel Roby (2018)

SUMMARY:The Fridge Concert Series Season 44: WYWY | Serge Volant
DESCRIPTION:The Fridge gig series continues with the Dubai-based Filipino dream/synth-pop band WYWY (X Alvarez on vocals and xylophone\, Mckie on guitar and bass). They’ve been around for a while\, not least at previous Fridge Concerts; but their rather good debut album Whispers of Existence dropped earlier this year\, ten tracks of brooding\, haunting melancholy delivered via swelling guitars\, drums\, synths and soaring vocals – a bit like Cocteau Twins\, and none the worse for that. Support comes from the very cool Serge Volant\, a DJ / mixer / synthmeister who comes from Beirut’s dynamic electronic scene. Should be a good night.

SUMMARY:Putting the Record Straight: The Lost Women of Art History
DESCRIPTION:The third in this seven-part lecture series by art historian Rose Balston on female artists from the 16th through to the 18th century – “women who have not only been side-lined\, but literally (and shockingly) blocked out of history”\, mainly by the (male) custodians of 19th-century art history. The talks run every other Wednesday to 4 December from 11am to 12.30pm; individual sessions are AED 250 per person\, but there’s a deal for all seven at AED 1\,650. \nThe schedule: \n11 Sept Blazing the Trail: Sofonisba Anguissola\nIn the 16th century\, Sofonisba Anguissola painted her way out of domesticity to unprecedented fame\, earning accolades from (among others) Michelangelo and Van Dyck. \n25 Sept The Secret Renaissance: The Women of Bologna\nThe female artists of 16th and 17th century Bologna flourished in this city and became part of its cultural identity. \n9 Oct Artemisia Gentileschi: Art and Power\nThe most famous of all female artists from this period\, Artemisia secured her place among the Baroque masters with astonishing paintings that powerfully reflect her personal struggles and cultural triumphs. \n23 Oct Women who Shaped the Dutch Golden Age: Legacy Reclaimed\nExplore the Dutch Golden Age through the lens of groundbreaking female artists who often outshone their male counterparts. \n6 Nov Rococo Rock Star: Rosalba Carriera\nCarriera was a canny businesswoman who revolutionised pastel painting\, captivated the Grand Tour elite\, and became an international cultural celebrity. \n20 Nov In the Court of Versailles: Élisabeth Vigée-Lebrun & Adélaïde Labille-Guiard\nCreating sensational portraits of their royal patrons\, the two top female painters in pre-Revolutionary France had nothing to be rivals about except that they both existed in a world not intended for them. \n4 Dec Angelica Kauffman: Prodigy\, Pioneer\nAngelica Kauffman\, a founding member of the Royal Academy\, achieved international renown as both a portrait and history painter. SUMMARY:Abdoulaye Konaté: Sambadio
DESCRIPTION:This solo show for the pioneering Malian artist Abdoulaye Konaté is inspired by the final track of Ali Farka Touré’s iconic 1976 album Le Jeune Chansonnier du Mali. The song Sambadio celebrates farmers with lyrics reflecting a father’s passionate plea for his son to honour the earth. In a similar vein\, Konaté’s latest works draw upon themes of Bedouin culture\, integrating motifs that pay tribute to their relationship with the land. \nKonaté creates large-scale textile-based installations using woven and dyed materials native to his homeland Mali. His abstract and figurative tableaux explore both aesthetic language and diverse socio-political and environmental issues; this show includes a new monumental work 9m wide. \nThis exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue with contributing writers Simon Njami\, Ousseynou Wade and Professor Yacouba Konaté. \nTo 6 January. \nAbove: Abdoulaye Konaté in front of Source de lumière (Soleil) Motif d’Arabie sur Fond Ocre (2024) \n
