SUMMARY:Candice Lin: Night Stone
DESCRIPTION:The LA-based artist’s first solo exhibition in West Asia. In Night Stone\, a large one-room installation\, Candice Lin uses ceramic sculptures\, textile works and a site-specific mural to connect the contemporary trade of manganese between Australia and China with the 18th-century commerce in sea cucumbers. Intrigued by the sea cucumbers’ unique digestive and respiratory systems\, Lin imagines and depicts their toxic encounter with manganese and the surprising bodily transformations that follow. \nThe exhibition was co-commissioned by the Biennale of Sydney and Monash University Museum of Art | MUMA in Melbourn. \nTo 12 January.

SUMMARY:Magnus Gjoen: The Future of The Past
DESCRIPTION:Gjoen invites the viewer to explore the delicate balance between history and modernity\, as envisioned through a distinctive style that fuses street art influences with pop culture and fine art – symbols and themes from the Renaissance and Baroque are reimagined to challenge traditional views of beauty. That aesthetic isn’t too surprising; after studying fine art and fashion design\, Gjoen worked with Vivienne Westwood en route to a full-time commitment to art rather than fashion. The gallery is suitably bullish: “The Future of The Past … transports viewers across timelines\, challenging the thought of what was\, what is and perhaps what could be”. \nTo 16 October. \nAbove: Magnus Gjoen\, The Morning After the Night Before. SUMMARY:PowerPointless Networking Night
DESCRIPTION:One of the most consistently funny of the Courtyard’s classic improv gigs is back after a couple of months’ hiatus: the speakers have to give a presentation on a slide deck they’ve never seen before\, with the topic determined at random by the Wheel of Destiny. Each presentation will be rated by a panel of judges and the winner applauded as the PowerPointless champion. Afterwards there’s a chance to mingle with the presenters and the Courtyard’s Corporate Team for mocktails (and a chance to find out more about the Courtyard’s Corporate Academy). \nIt’s free\, with donations welcome; but you need to put your name on the guestlist via the website. It’s first-come first-served\, so get there early to grab a seat. \n

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Pascal Navarro: From the winter nights of Oslo to the golden lights of Dubai
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition of Navarro’s abstract paintings. The artist says he considers himself primarily a colourist\, and the sun of Dubai has led him towards a palette of golden colours\, with light shades\, infused with the energy and movement that characterise this ever-evolving city. The nature of the materials he uses are equally important; though; “he embraces the element of surprise in the evolution of his work\, whether by cultivating intentional or accidental mistakes\, experimenting with plastic effects\, or using various types of paints …”

SUMMARY:Antonio Dias: The Search for an Open Enigma
DESCRIPTION:Work by Antonio Dias (1944–2018)\, an artist who relentlessly transgressed material and conceptual boundaries\, tackling complex sociopolitical issues across diverse mediums. Drawing upon Hélio Oiticica’s 1969 analysis of Dias’ practice\, the title embraces the versatile\, ever-changing and subversive nature of his artistic oeuvre; the exhibition pays homage to Dias’ category-defying tendencies through a broad selection of works that encompass his artistic trajectory from its beginnings in the 1960s until the early 2000s. \nThe exhibition is curated by Hoor Al Qasimi\, Director of Sharjah Art Foundation\, with Reem Sawan\, Curatorial Assistant at the Foundation. \nTo 8 December. \nAbove: \nAntonio Dias\, Heart to Crush (1966)

SUMMARY:Vantage Point Sharjah (VPS 12)
DESCRIPTION:Sharjah Art Foundation’s annual photography exhibition returns for its 12 edition. Under the theme ‘If I Were Another’ (derived from a Mahmoud Darwish poem)\, this year’s exhibition addresses intimate individual experiences and the weight of collective memory\, proposing empathy as the core lens through which we perceive others who may hold different identities\, histories and sensibilities. \nFrom the artists who responded to this thematic prompt through an international open call\, four were selected for the exhibition; all the works featured works reflect on personal experiences\, history and collective memory. Sara Kontar documents her personal experiences of exile to investigate fragments of forgotten memories and explore themes of displacement. Thasil Suhara Backer examines ecology and biopolitics through the dual lens of theatre and visual art. PhotojournalistArum Dayu explores contemporary Javanese culture and society with a particular focus on feminism and motherhood. Anthropologist Mosfiqur Rahman Johan uses photography to document the hardships of marginalised communities struggling with displacement. \nBringing together diverse voices and lived experiences\, the exhibition embodies the spirit of experimentation in contemporary photography and provides a dynamic platform for a spectrum of approaches\, from documentary to experimental\, in both analogue and digital forms. \nTo 8 December. \nAbove: Thasil Suhara Baker\, Illuminating Shores (2019–2020). Below: Mosfiqur Rohan\, Memories of Underdevelopment (2017–2023)\n \nChildrens are playing in the vicinity where the coal power plant has been erected\,december 9\,2023.

SUMMARY:William Kentridge: A Shadow of a Shadow
DESCRIPTION:Kentridge’s first major solo exhibition in the region features a survey of 17 performances by the artist\, spanning a period from the late 1980s to the present and showcasing a wide range of his work. They include his interpretations of King Ubu from Ubu Roi and Mozart’s The Magic Flute alongside Kentridge’s original production The Head and the Load (2018) about Africa and Africans during World War I. On display will be a variety of objects and artworks produced for the development and presentation of Kentridge’s performance projects\, including drawings\, stage backdrops\, animations\, puppets\, props\, costumes and installations inspired by theatrical illusions. \nWhile nodding to Kentridge’s predilection for shadow plays and puppet theatre\, A Shadow of a Shadow also pays homage to his incisive political rebuke of authoritarianism through absurdist satire and theatricality. Together\, the works selected for this exhibition speak to the artist’s ongoing critique of social constructs\, power structures and colonialism. \nThis exhibition is curated by Hoor Al Qasimi\, Director of Sharjah Art Foundation\, and Tarek Abou El Fetouh\, Senior Curator and Director of the Performance Department\, with May Alqaydi\, Assistant Curator\, and Khalid Mohammed\, Curatorial Assistant\, Sharjah Art Foundation. \nTo 8 December. \nAbove: William Kentridge\, Cat / Coffee Pot IV (2019)

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE At the Edge of Land
DESCRIPTION:This group exhibition\, curated by Lucas Morin\, highlights unexpectedly interconnected geographies\, resources and commodities\, moving between land and sea to tell stories of conflict\, erosion and extraction; it’s based on works from the Art Jameel Collection plus loans and new commissions by 18 international artists. It originated at Hayy Arts in Jeddah (where it ran November 2023 to April 2024) and the works presented trace the trade routes on which both Dubai and Jeddah are located – the busy maritime path connecting East Asia and Europe via the Gulf\, the Red Sea and the Suez Canal.

SUMMARY:Nabil Anani: The Land and I
DESCRIPTION:Nabil Anani has been focussed on painting landscapes for over two decades. His work demonstrates how the land is central to his identity and existence\, and how it is also integral to its people; in The Land and I\, Anani sees himself as inseparable from the earth he paints. \nThe exhibition features textured and colourful paintings of the Palestinian landscape\, a celebration of Palestine that he dreams of – nature\, without checkpoints\, cement barriers\, or settlements. He often uses natural materials\, like wood\, straw\, dried herbs\, seeds\, and spices\, infusing his paintings with the very elements of the earth that he  portrays. By grounding his art in the materiality of the land itself\, Anani seeks to reclaim the Palestinian landscape from the continuous attempts of colonial erasure\, emphasising the sense of attachment\, belonging\, and continuity. \nTo 12 January.

SUMMARY:A Hard Day’s Night: dir Richard Lester (1964)
DESCRIPTION:The Beatles before they became a studio-only band and got fed up with fame\, fortune and each other: Richard Lester’s anything-goes direction and a decent lots-of-laughs script plus some good acting from British stalwarts of the time (like Wilfrid Brambell as Ringo’s grandpa) made for a great film\, one that captured much of the sense of fun of being young in the early 1960s. The boys obviously enjoyed it\, showed some acting chops\, and contributed several excellent songs\, too – and unlike other band films of the era the numbers do occur naturally as part of the plot (it helps that the story is basically about our heroes going to swinging London to perform on a TV show). The Independent‘s summary is as good as any: “Part musical bonanza\, part laugh-out-loud farce\, part satirical social document … As invigorating and funny now as it was on its original release half a century ago\, A Hard Day’s Night offers both a perfect showcase for the Beatles and an intriguing snapshot of fast-changing\, early-1960s British society”. Recommended\, whether or not you feel the need to recapture your youth or see what all the fuss was about…

SUMMARY:Broker: dir Hirokazu Kore-eda (2022)
DESCRIPTION:One rainy night\, Moon So-young (Lee ‘IU’ Ji-eun) leaves her baby Woo-sung outside a ‘baby box’ in Busan\, a safe place set up in Korean churches for new mothers to leave unwanted infants. But instead\, he’s stolen by Sang-hyun (Song Kang-ho) who runs an unofficial adoption brokerage with his business partner (Gang Dong-won). Remorseful at abandoning her child\, So-young tracks the pair down and goes on a road trip with them to meet the baby’s potential parents\, collecting a seven-year-old stowaway from a nearby orphanage along the way.  As they search for Woo-sung’s new family\, the unlikely group evolves into something of a family themselves – unaware they’re being tailed by two detectives (Bae Doona\, Lee Joo-young) who are determined to stop them. A heartwarming\, funny and moving family road movie cum crime comedy\, Broker is an outstanding film from Academy Award nominated filmmaker Hirokazu Kore-eda. In Korean with English subtitles.

SUMMARY:Dalma: dir Humaid Alsuwaidi (2023)
DESCRIPTION:Dana moves to Dalma island when she inherits a house\, renovates the property\, and starts renting it out to tourists. An innocuous lunch at the only restaurant she finds sets her on a path of collision with many of the island’s inhabitants – especially Ghaith\, a doctor who refuses to leave the island despite the many opportunities on the mainland. It’s partly about social traditions and being a woman in a man’s world\, but the tensions that emerge mean it develops into a study of interesting characters with layers of complexity that emerge as the story progresses … \nThe film\, written and directed by the UAE-based filmmaker Humaid Alsuwaidi\, was shot on location in Dalma Island over a brisk 49 days\, with a skeleton crew and a supporting cast largely made up of non-actors from the island. The screening will be followed by an in-person conversation with Alsuwaidi; it’s presented by the NYUAD Film and New Media Program in the CinemaNA series of contemporary Arab film. \n

SUMMARY:Preserving the Past\, Embracing Change\, Honoring Traditions
DESCRIPTION:Managing the tensions between traditions and progress (whatever that means) is a particularly acute issue for the Gulf states\, awash with money and keen to welcome the world but concerned to maintain a culture rooted in the last. Zaki Aslan\, Professor of Practice at the American University of Sharjah\, Advisor (Cultural Heritage)\, and former Founding Director of ICCROM-Sharjah (the local arm of the International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property)\, will discuss the need for adaptation and continuity within cultural practices and identities in the region; he’ll suggest how societies in this part of the world can devise policies and projects to safeguard traditions — from innovative and integrated preservation approaches to the revitalization of inter-generational knowledge.

SUMMARY:Zineb Sedira: A way of surviving\, a way of life …
DESCRIPTION:Sedira’s films represent a profound archival exploration of identity\, and cultural activism. Born in 1963 to Algerian parents\, her work is deeply rooted in her self-narration but also sheds light on broader\, interconnected global anxieties surrounding cultural emancipation and diaspora. \nThis exhibition of Sedira’s pioneering cinematic practice is centred on the award-winning Dreams Have No Titles (2022)\, presented as a constructed full-scale cinema box in the Cultural Foundation’s atrium. Originally conceived for the French Pavilion at the 2022 Venice Biennale\, Dreams Have No Titles is an immersive installation comprising film\, sculpture\, photography and performance\, that interweaves the artist’s biography with activist films produced across France\, Algeria and Italy in the 1960s and 1970s\, a pivotal moment in the history of avant-garde film production. \nAlso featured are mise-en-scène (2019); Image Keepers (2010); and Mother Tongue (2002). These films all carry key concepts in the artist’s practice as they illustrate the complexities of migration\, memory\, and the intergenerational transmission of knowledge. \nTo 8 March.

SUMMARY:Claude Cozens Trio feat. Ghazi Al-Mulaifi and Tonatiut Zardoìn
DESCRIPTION:The multi-faceted jazz-fusion Claude Cozens Trio from Cape Town performs in the UAE for the first time. The trio (Cozens on drums\, Kyle Shepherd on piano and keyboards\, Benjamin Jephta on acoustic and electric bass) is joined by new friends from the UAE\, Ghazi Al-Mulaifi (guitar) and Tonatiut Zardon (trumpet). \nA multi-instrumentalist with roots in improvised music\, Cozens’ drumming owes much to the rhythms of the goema\, a type of hand drum characteristically used in South Africa’s Cape jazz scene — “Cozens uses the historic language of Cape jazz to have some very fresh conversations” as one commentator put it. \nThis is something of a reunion; the trio actually split up ten years ago to working on different projects. The members have joined forces in other formats with other artists and projects over the years but have not come together as a trio in over a decade. It’s also a reunion with NYUAD itself\, where Cozens has in the past had Adjunct Faculty status and where Ghazi Al-Mulaifi is himself a Visiting Assistant Professor. \nThe gig is sold out\, but as ever there may be returns …

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Mohamed Yousif and Maggie Otieno: Solace in Soil
DESCRIPTION:A duo exhibition for Emirati artist Mohamed Yousif and Kenyan sculptor Maggie Otieno that “celebrates the grounded connections between the practices of the two artists and the cross-cultural exchange between the Middle East and Africa”. Or as curator Shamma Al Mheiri puts it\, “Maggie Otieno and Dr Mohamed Yousif share leitmotifs of expressing generational sentiments and experiences through tangible expressions. Perhaps distinct in visual identities\, Otieno and Dr Yousif manifest connections deeper than the aesthetic portrayals in a state of continual solace …” The gallery is equally effusive: “This exhibition fosters a symbiotic exchange between the artists and their artistic practices\, intimately linked to their earthy foundations\, enabling their work to converse and showcase the interconnectedness between the regions”. \nMohamed Yousif is regarded as a pioneer of UAE sculpture and is one of the founders of the Emirates Fine Art Society. His 3D work is typically carefully crafted and delicate wooden sculptures\, many woven out of palm tree fronds handpicked in the UAE desert. He has featured in several exhibitions\, including The National Pavilion of the UAE at the 2015 and 2017 Venice Biennales. \nMaggie Otieno characteristically works with long abstract figures comprised of distressed railway sleepers\, originally from India and used to lay the ‘iron snake’ railway line in Kenya at the end of the 19th century – carrying within them stories of travellers\, labourers and communities. “Through her deft manipulation of form and texture\, she endeavours to imbue her sculptures with a sense of temporal continuity\, affording them a palpable resonance with the viewer’s own lived experiences”.

SUMMARY:Sharjah International Film Festival for Children and Youth (SIFF)
DESCRIPTION:SIFF is back for its eleventh edition with an expanded official selection of 98 films (last year had just over 80) selected from 1\,834 submissions from 73 countries. Zimbabwe takes part for the first time; Palestine’s selection as Guest of Honor makes good sense\, given both consistent success of Palestinian films and the miserable situation in the country. Sheikha Jawaher bint Abdullah Al Qasimi\, DG of the Festival noteds that “Palestinian cinema continues to deliver thought-provoking\, visually captivating works that reflect the pulse of Palestinian society”. \nThe Green Carpet platform\, a highlight of the festival\, will feature four premieres – Amakor\, a Kuwaiti comedy drama directed by Ahmed Al-Khodary; The Trainers\, an Italian film directed by Andrea Joplin; The Teacher\, directed by the British-Palestinian filmmaker Farah Nabulsi (reviewed as “riveting\, eye-opening … an intimate exploration of life in occupied Palestine” by The Hollywood Reporter); and Diplodocus\, an engaging animation about a little green dinosaur from the Polish filmmaker Wojtek Wawszczyk (above). \nThere’s a good selection of films in competition – 11 in the International Short Films category\, 17 Arabic shorts\, 14 animated shorts\, four animated features and a dozen live-action features\, 11 documentaries\, 19 in the student category\, and a cheery 10  for Films Made by Children and Young People. \nThe festival’s film market includes some practical workshops including a panel session on independent film distribution and another on the future of the Palestinian narrative in cinema. \n
