SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Abdelwahab Hawam: Solo Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:The debut exhibition in the UAE by the emerging Egyptian artist draws inspiration from Hawam’s hometown of El Mahalla El Kubra in Gharbeya Governorate – its countryside\, colours\, and the faces of people who shaped his early life. Working in oils\, Hawam places women at the centre of this universe through surreal\, playful narrative compositions and colours; he reimagines human experiences with an uplifting\, optimistic vision that invites viewers into his vibrant\, magical world.

SUMMARY:All at Once
DESCRIPTION:A group exhibition that reflects on continuity\, resilience\, and quiet optimism at a time when the world can feel uncertain. Says the gallery: “All at Once speaks to the coexistence of multiple realities – personal and shared\, fleeting and enduring\, grounded and aspirational. Through an eclectic mix of perspectives and practices\, the exhibition embraces this simultaneity\, offering a space where contrasts do not compete\, but instead unfold together”. \nThe artists: \nZhang Ji (China)\nGary Lang (USA)\nConrad Jon Godly (Switzerland)\nKojo Marfo (Ghana)\nSantiago Parra (Colombia)\nSophie-Yen Bretez (Vietnam)\nTim Kent (Canada)\nUr Kasin (Romania)\nRichard Wathen (UK)\nYann Leto (France)\nHenrik Uldalen (South Korea)\nLu Xinjian (China) \nTo 15 May. \nAbove: Ur Kasin\, The Painter on the Road to Dubai (2024-25)

SUMMARY:Robert Powers: The City in Its Details – The Past and Future in Dubai’s Architecture
DESCRIPTION:A close look at Dubai’s urban fabric through the lens of architect and photographer Robert Powers. The exhibition traces the patterns and repetitions in architecture\, streetscapes\, industry\, and infrastructure that shapes the character of a city; taken between 2013 and 2025 in Deira and Bur Dubai\, the photographs document walkable parts of Dubai that have existed since the early days of the Union. Much of this older architecture may soon be demolished\, as its value is often unrecognised – yet these buildings hold beauty\, interest\, and cultural significance\, forming an essential part of the city’s history and collective memory. \nTo 10 May.

SUMMARY:Wednesday Night Impro: Maestro
DESCRIPTION:The Courtyard’s popular evening of elimination improv. Ten actors converge for a night of scenes\, songs and games based on audience suggestions. After each round you score the players on a scale of 1 to 5\, and the one with the lowest score is knocked out. Eventually only one remains\, to be crowned the Maestro. “Fast-paced\, unpredictable\, and hilarious” says the promo\, and you couldn’t argue with that. As with all Courtyard improv evenings it’s free\, but you need to put your name on the guestlist (via the website); and it’s first-come first-served\, so get there early to grab a seat. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Saif Azzuz: Invisible Fish
DESCRIPTION:This first solo exhibition in the Middle East for the SF-based Libyan-Yurok artist takes its title from a poem by Joy Harjo\, which considers cycles of transformation across land\, water\, and time\, moving from submerged environments to human settlement and industrial presence. This show includes paintings\, works on paper\, sculpture\, and moving images\, tracing an ecological and cultural history of the UAE prior to large-scale urban development; Azzuz approaches land and water as lived\, relational systems rather than extractive resources\, foregrounding marine environments\, fishing practices\, and water as both sustenance and connective force across geographies. \nThrough material experimentation and research-driven enquiry\, Azzuz positions water not only as a subject but as a shared condition – one that links place\, history\, and the ongoing negotiation between human activity and the natural world. The Algae Bloom series of paintings are central to this\, with Azzuz working wet-on-wet so that paint bleeds\, drips and merges to produce organic forms that feel suspended and continuously evolving. So rather than literal depictions\, these works function as sensory impressions of aquatic ecosystems shaped by rhythm\, fragility\, and transformation …

SUMMARY:Global Positioning System
DESCRIPTION:A group exhibition dedicated to mapping and navigation systems\, “telling stories of fast cars and donkeys\, spinning globes and street barricades\, cosmic highways and broken bridges …” Curated by Indranjan Banerjee and Lucas Morin\, the exhibition presents a wide range of practices\, from research-based critical engagements with infrastructure projects to conceptual works that question the very perception of distance. It’s in two parts\, reflecting Art Jameel’s specific geographic footprint at two extremities of the Arabian Peninsula: at the Jameel in Dubai\, the show centres on navigation systems and mobility networks; at Hayy Jameel in Jeddah the exhibition (which runs 20 May – 17 October) focuses on cartography and mapping. \nTo 4 October. \nAbove: Fayçal Baghriche; Souvenir (2012)

SUMMARY:If Music Can Speak: The Moldau by Bedřich Smetana
DESCRIPTION:A lecture-performance with the Firdaus Orchestra that breaks down the music to reveal the hidden stories and craftsmanship behind the Bohemian composer’s symphonic poem\, a work which aims to evoke the flow of the Vltava River – in German\, the Moldau – through the Czech countryside to the city of Prague. The Moldau captures in music Smetana’s love of his homeland; live demonstrations will show how the music is built from its historical context to its rich orchestration before the orchestra gives a full performance of the piece.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Nazilya Nagimova: Follow the Snail
DESCRIPTION:The first solo exhibition in the Emirates for the Münster-based Tatar artist Nazilya Nagimova brings together new works created specifically for her solo project at NIKA Project Space\, plus selections from earlier projects. \nNagimova explores memory\, migration\, and the search for belonging\, and these works share a thematic core: the artist’s ongoing experiments with felt (a traditional material of her ancestors)\, her engagement with the long histories of Tatar mobility and settlement\, and the idea of home as a mobile\, vulnerable\, and constantly transforming structure. Says the gallery: “The exhibition unfolds as a reflection on the fragility of shelter and on how personal and collective memory shape our intimate relationship to place and community”.

SUMMARY:Elusive Territories
DESCRIPTION:Elusive Territories is group show for 15 prominent Palestinian artists whose work examines the relationship between exile\, memory\, and homeland – three dynamics that constantly engage with one another\, especially at this critical time. SUMMARY:The Studio
DESCRIPTION:An interesting experiment in open-access open-ended performance by The Junction. It’s a kind of open mic for any kind of performance: you can pitch for a slot for whatever it is you want to do (anything goes\, apparently) – book here – but spontaneous performances are also welcome on the day (“we will have open floor time built in\, and try and get as many performances in as we can”). And you can also attend as an opinionated audience member; performance is not mandatory … \nRegistration is required\, either way. Presentation slots are limited and will be on a first-come first-served basis “to ensure a variety of disciplines and mediums are showcased — so the more specific you are about what you’re bringing\, the better”.

SUMMARY:Jukebox Junction
DESCRIPTION:The Junction does comedy for two consecutive (but not repeated) nights on 4 and 5 April: “Jukebox Junction is where stand-up and improv collide for a night that’s fast\, unpredictable\, and seriously fun … Sharp written comedy meets completely unscripted chaos\, with performers bouncing between polished sets and off-the-cuff scenes that come to life in the moment. No two shows are ever the same and that’s exactly the point … This isn’t just a show you watch\, it’s one you feel. Fast-paced\, unpredictable\, and packed with performers ready to take big swings and bring the room with them …” That sets the bar pretty high. It’s free\, but book a seat in advance.

DESCRIPTION:This exhibition explores the quiet logic of annexed spaces and the peripheral architectures that shape everyday life across the Gulf. Through documentation\, case studies\, and spatial narratives\, it reflects on how these overlooked structures mediate between privacy\, family\, and urban form. \nThe exhibition reflects ongoing research by Amer Madhoun\, co-founder of Collectus Design & Architecture Studio\, conducted as part of Bayt AlMamzar’s first design and architecture residency. Developed over nearly three years\, the Mulhaq research residency has been conceived as a long-term process with outcomes that includes publications and the future renovation of BAM’s mulhaq (annex) as well as the exhibition itself. \nThis project is supported through the Modern Heritage Grant Program\, an initiative by the UAE Ministry of Culture\, in collaboration with Zayed University and Majra – National CSR Fund. \nTo 8 May.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Jane Beveridge: Local
DESCRIPTION:The Dubai-based artist’s first solo show aim to capture the essence of Dubai\, and of belonging. Says the artist\, who is currently Head of Art at Dubai College: “my visual palette and material inspiration are rooted in the streets. I am drawn to the beauty of cracked\, stained\, and weathered walls as well as surfaces patched with plaster or paint – they read like large abstract paintings. Corrugated cardboard\, concrete\, sand\, rust\, tangled wires\, weathered wood – all find their way into my work\, each carrying a story of time\, place and texture …”

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Abdulqader Al Rais: Al Nayed
DESCRIPTION:A retrospective for one of the artists who have played a central role in shaping the UAE’s modern visual identity\, featuring work from a career spanning more than five decades. Bridging heritage and modernity with authority\, Al Rais’s paintings draw deeply on Emirati heritage\, Islamic culture\, and the interplay between the UAE’s natural landscapes and architecture. As the gallery puts it\, “Al Nayed captures the cultural transformation of the UAE without nostalgia”. \nThe exhibition include rare works from the artist’s private collection and a selection of previously unseen new work\, but also draws substantially from five of the artist’s best known series – Alghaf\, inspired by the ghaf tree\, a national symbol of the UAE; Calligraphy (Hurufiyya)\, where Arabic letters function as visual and spiritual forms; Impressionism\, early depictions of UAE landscapes rendered with soft\, atmospheric brushstrokes; Alhaa\, a distinctive series of watercolours on paper; and Abstract\, which combines geometric elements with landscape compositions. \n

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE John Dilg: Found and Lost
DESCRIPTION:The Iowa-based artist John Dilg represents scenic panoramas as earth-toned paintings that feel immediately familiar yet poignantly dreamlike. Having specialised in abstraction early in his career\, Dilg’s evolution towards landscape painting retained an especial awareness of spatial relationships – “a consciousness of the physical and allusory [sic] weight of forms and structures\,” as the gallery puts it. “His landscapes transcend scenery\, becoming a lexicon of objects\, each powerfully charged with memory and meaning. Dilg’s paintings are wonderfully contemplative spaces\, where solitude and recognition coexist\, evoking our shared longing for meaning within nature’s vastness …”

SUMMARY:Shezad Dawood: Skin of Dreams
DESCRIPTION:Shezad Dawood’s 25-year career spans painting\, textiles\, sculpture\, ceramics\, film\, performance and digital media. Fascinated by ecologies and architecture\, his work connects art\, science\, music\, environmentalism and technology to explore both alternative histories and futures\, through a process of continuous world-building expressed as an explosion of colour and multi-layered narratives; and that should make this first mid-career retrospective of the artist a must-visit. The exhibition\, which is curated by Jessica Cerasi\, features more than 40 works including painting\, sculpture\, monumental film installations\, and interactive virtual reality experiences – with more artworks being introduced gradually during the exhibition’s run\, which should repay multiple visits (it’s on till mid-September). Running alongside is a series of workshops on the themes of the exhibition. \nTo 20 September. \nAbove: Shezad Dawood\, Anselm Chapel\, Tokyo (2016)
