SUMMARY:The Ugly One
DESCRIPTION:When the extent of his ugliness is revealed\, Lette turns to a plastic surgeon for help – but when the bandages come off\, Lette soon learns that there is such a thing as too beautiful … \nTranslated from the original German\, Marius von Mayenburg’s very dark comedy about beauty\, identity and getting ahead in life “makes its points with the lightest of touches” (The Guardian). Gillian Rhodes\, who directs\, has come up with what looks like a great choice – especially for somewhere so interested in (a) physical appearance and (b) the merits of capitalism … \nThere are shows on 24\, 25 and 26 October at 7.30pm\, and also at 2.30pm on 24 and 25 October. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:SCHLiNGEL Abu Dhabi: day one
DESCRIPTION:After a successful debut in 2024\, SCHLiNGEL returns to Abu Dhabi. It’s an international film festival for children that has been running since 1996 in Chemnitz\, Germany\, showcasing the most exciting new productions for young people. \nThe Abu Dhabi edition runs 23-25 October\, with the first day reserved for school screenings. The opening film for Friday 24 Oct is … \nWow! Message from Outer Space dir Felix Binder  (2023) \nEleven-year-old Billie has just moved to a new town with her dad. Her mother\, a famous astronaut\, died during a space mission. At a junkyard\, she meets Dino\, a boy her age who loves tinkering with machines. Together\, they build a radio telescope – and they pick up signals that could only come from aliens! No one believes them\, but Billie and Dino don’t give up. Their search for answers takes them all the way to the spaceport in Kourou\, French Guiana – and into an unmanned rocket that launches them into space. The film is an exciting story\, but it’s also about friendship\, curiosity\, and the courage to chase the impossible. Suitable for 7 years up; in German with English subtitles. \nEach of the SCHLiNGEL Abu Dhabi sessions is charged at AED 25\, but there’s a multi-show pass at AED 75 to cover any or all of the films. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Constructing the Orient: Fragments of a Western Dream
DESCRIPTION:Drawn from the private collection of Bassam Said Freiha plus key loans from the Ary Jan Gallery\, this exhibition of Orientalist works  unfolds across five thematic sections\, each focusing on a central motif within Orientalist visual language and examining how artists shaped their subjects into recurring archetypes. From imagined interiors and bustling marketplaces to archetypes of men and women\, the works on view invite audiences to reflect on how the ‘Orient’ was constructed through Western eyes and how these images continue to shape perceptions today. \nTo 31 May. \nAbove: Jean-Léon Gérôme\, The Harem Promenade (undated)

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Talal Al Najjar: Mesh & Mayhem
DESCRIPTION:Talal Al Najjar’s works feel very contemporary\, not just in his use of materials and technologuy but also in his concerns and ambitions. He produces sculpture\, video\, sound\, CGI animation\, painting\, and installation\, in addition to writing and curation; his is a research-driven interdisciplinary practice that seeks to recontextualise material culture\, artefacts\, and imagery. This ‘defamiliarisation’\, overlaid with irony and seen through an absurdist lens\, prompts anthropological and material questions. Primary concerns include ideas around simulation\, postproduction\, poor images\, counter-futurisms\, and the contention of postmodern conditions. \nSays the gallery: “The exhibition confronts the way simulation infiltrates geography and biology – where the mesh becomes both structure and rupture\, at once a connective tissue and a site of collapse …”

SUMMARY:PowerPointless Networking Night
DESCRIPTION:Back for a new season\, it’s one of the most consistently funny of the Courtyard’s classic improv gigs: the speakers have to give a presentation on a slide deck they’ve never seen before\, with the topic determined at random by the Wheel of Destiny. Each presentation will be rated by a panel of judges and the winner applauded as the PowerPointless champion. Afterwards there’s a chance to mingle with the presenters and the Courtyard’s Corporate Team for an iftar (and a chance to find out more about the Courtyard’s Corporate Academy). \nIt’s free\, but you need to put your name on the guestlist via the website. It’s first-come first-served\, so get there early to grab a seat. \n

SUMMARY:Thomas Dillon: The Raw and the Cooked
DESCRIPTION:This is Dillon’s first solo exhibition in Dubai; and it is claimed to be a milestone in the artist’s career\, featuring a body of work conceived and created specifically for this show. \nIn Claude Lévi-Strauss’s influential text of the same name\, the author identified binary oppositions – nature and culture\, raw and cooked – as fundamental tools by which societies organise meaning. For Dillon\, it is more than a reference; it offers a conceptual lens through which his paintings may be read – Dillon feels he is testing the limits of painting as a medium that can bridge instinct and intellect\, gesture and structure\, matter and form. As the gallery puts it\, “Dillon’s works remind us that art continues to operate like myth: as a space where chaos is given form\, where the elemental becomes symbolic\, and where human thought – raw and cooked alike – finds its most resonant expression”. \nTo 17 November. \nAbove: Thomas Dillon\, Hawkeye (2025\, detail)

SUMMARY:Wednesday Night Impro: Maestro
DESCRIPTION:The Courtyard’s most peopular evening of elimination improv. Ten actors converge for a night of scenes\, songs and games based on audience suggestions. After each round you score the players on a scale of 1 to 5\, and the one with the lowest score is knocked out. SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Sebastian Hosu: Transmission
DESCRIPTION:The debut solo exhibition in Dubai by the German Romanian artist introduces a new body of work that captures human presence in flux figures that dissolve into their surroundings. Known for his monumental canvases and emotionally charged brushwork\, Hosu invites viewers into immersive environments where the human figure merges with landscapes of colour\, memory\, and motion; the monumental scale of these paintings is central to their power\, requiring viewers to encounter them not so much as images as environments. The intensity of the brushwork\, the spatial tension\, and the psychological presence of the figures reveal themselves in ways no reproduction can fully capture.

So far it has clocked up more than 25 international awards (among them a West End Laurence Olivier award for Best Entertainment\, a Drama Desk Award in New York\, and a Broadway Tony nomination). \nIt’s also wowed the critics: “the most fun in the theatre you will ever experience” (The Guardian) and “a thing of rare theatrical beauty not to be missed” (Daily Telegraph). SUMMARY:Shakespeare for Kidz: A Midsummer Night’s Dream
DESCRIPTION:First staged to critical acclaim at the Edinburgh Festival in the late 1990s\, Shakespeare 4 Kidz’ A Midsummer Night’s Dream is a lively\, funny and accessible musical retelling of Shakespeare’s timeless classic. The comed follows the Duke of Athens as he prepares to marry the Queen of the Amazons; meanwhile\, six local tradesmen rehearse a play for the royal celebrations\, four young lovers flee into the woods with marriage plans of their own\, the feuding Fairy King and Queen unleash chaos on the mortal world\, and the mischievous sprite Puck is keen to cause mayhem … so what could possibly go wrong? \nThe S4K (Shakespeare 4 Kidz) team has been bringing the world of Shakespeare to young people around the world for more than 25 years\, so far with six brilliantly accessible musical adaptations that make for an ideal introduction to Shakespeare. \nFor Abu Dhabi there are two performances on each of three days (19\, 20\, 21 October) at 9am and 11.45am (it lasts about 90 minutes). \n  \n

SUMMARY:World Stage Design
DESCRIPTION:The international festival of design for performance\, held every four years\, is coming to the UAE for its 2025 edition. It features exhibitions\, performances\, workshops\, talks and panels where professionals share ideas and mingle with the consumers; read our preview piece\, including an interview with the organiser\, here. \nInternational Design Exhibition and Competition \nThis platforms individual designers from across the globe\, showing work that they have created in the previous four years (no hypothetical designs are allowed). Applications to WSD25 closed in November last year with just over a thousand submissions; an international jury of 16 members has shortlisted the top 100 to show in the exhibition and compete for the awards. \nTheatre Architecture Competition \nThe TAC explores new ideas about theatre architecture and interdisciplinary cooperation. Architects and theatre makers submit their proposals for a performance space in a given location – which this time will be the courtyard at Bait Obaid al Shamsi. Collaborations between architects and other theatre practitioners such as directors\, technicians\, performers or musicians (and/or students in those fields) are encouraged. \nTechnical Invention Prize \nThe TIP competition invites theatre technicians worldwide to share simple and smart solutions in everyday stage practice – innovative gadgets\, devices\, or any other effective solutions (often crafted using affordable materials and available resources). While some inventions may be used only in a specific theatre\, company\, touring production\, or even within a single country\, the TIP provides a platform to share them with the international community. All competition entries are published in a catalogue as a reference for industry professionals and educators. \nScenofest \nThis is the festival component of WSD\, celebrating scenography with around 60 talks\, masterclasses\, panel discussions\, themed mini-exhibitions\, and immersive installations and performances (from New Zealand\, Hungary\, the UAE\, Indonesia\, UK\, Nigeria\, “and many more”) in a very full programme running 10am to 10pm each day. \nAlso part of Scenofest is a one-day Research Symposium celebrating “global perspectives\, insights and approaches to research in theatre and performance design\, architecture\, and technology”. The full programme is here. \nSound Kitchen \nA biennial opportunity for sound designers and composers to publicly present or perform their work in a listening-friendly space. Presentations may be compositions (or extracts from longer compositions)\, sound art\, sounds from an installation\, or sound scores from theatre or live entertainment; pieces are typically 10-20 minutes with an opportunity to discuss the work afterwards. There’s more information here. \nWSD25 is being organised by Sharjah Performing Arts Academy under the theme Tomorrow’s Heritage. The main venue is SPAA; TAC and some Scenofest events will be at Sharjah Arts Foundation’s Bait Obaid Al Shamsi; and the TIP will be at Sharjah Research Technology and Innovation Park. \nDay passes are AED 50 and an eight-day pass is a bargain AED 250; both include all performances\, workshops\, talks\, exhibitions\, and Scenofest.

SUMMARY:Slava’s Snowshow
DESCRIPTION:It might be a bit early for Christmas\, but this really is one of the best seasonal shows around – a whimsical blur of laughter\, awe\, and magic that has already been seen by more than 12 million theatregoers in80 countries around the world\, including a near sellout run at Dubai Opera last year. The New York Times came up with “simply thrilling … unmissable … induces waves of giggles and sighs of pleasure”. And the Financial Times gave us “Slava’s Snowshow achieved something I’ve rarely seen: a spontaneous eruption of playful energy which lifted the entire audience in a bubble of pure delight. Magic!” All of which is spot on. \nEssentially it’s a group of clowns wearing green and one wearing yellow\, in “a celebration of winter and snow”. But Slava Polunin\, the show’s creator\, has created something special from the fabric of dreams and fairy tales in a kaleidoscope of events\, colours\, sounds\, “spaces” and “times”; combining breathtaking visuals\, immersive stagecraft\, and the famous snowstorm finale\, it usually deloivers an unforgettable experience for audiences of all ages. As Variety put it\, “Slava’s Snowshow is to clowning what Cirque du Soleil is to the circus … Slava’s Snowshow is as theatrical as it is simple\, as involving as it is inspiring”. \nIt runs from 14 to 26 October with a break in the middle. Most shows start at 7pm\, but there are weekend matinées; weekends carry a price premium\, incidentally. The schedule: \nTue 14 Oct 7.30pm from AED 200\nWed 15 Oct 7.30pm from AED 200\nThu 16 Oct 7.30pm from AED 200\nFri 17 Oct 8.00pm from AED 250\nSat 18 Oct 4pm and 8pm from AED 250\nSun 19 Oct 4pm and 8pm from AED 250 \nWed 22 Oct 7.30pm from AED 200\nThu 23 Oct 7.30pm from AED 200\nFri 24 Oct 4pm and 8.00pm from AED 250\nSat 25 Oct 4pm and 8pm from AED 250\nSun 26 Oct 2pm and 6pm from AED 250 \n \n  \n
