SUMMARY:Asma Belhamar: Solid Void
DESCRIPTION:This solo exhibition captures the tensions between shifting natural geographies and dynamic urban environments\, featuring new works inspired by the UAE’s architectural history. It narrates the topographic evolution of the UAE\, as influenced by Western classical modernity\, contemporary traditionalism in Islam\, and the historic trade relationships that shaped much of that landscape; the artist’s interpretation reveals the diversity and fragmentation of the design sensibilities that have made the nation’s aesthetic identity what it is today. \nSolid Void is the result of the 2023 edition of 421’s Artistic Development Program\, organised in collaboration with The Institute for Emerging Art. \nTo 31 December.

SUMMARY:Karama Arts Club: Local Matters – The Making of a Music Scene
DESCRIPTION:The intelligent networking session for creative peers is back after its summer break with an extended evening session – a social (with private bar) for members and guests (5.30 to 8.30) followed by the meat of the evening\, a panel discussion on the music scene locally. Panellists will “get right back to basics to dissect the current climate and present practical solutions to work towards a thriving local music scene” including “how the relentless pursuit of imported acts has overshadowed the potential of local talent and stunted the growth of a vibrant homegrown music scene”. \nThe panel: \n\nCharl Chaka Dubai-based creative\, artist\, and DJ who’s had a hugely influential role in shaping the local music scene since 2004. He’s responsible for INFUSION magazine\, too\nRima Rached Founder of Third Eye Crew and the Electric Days events (now rebranded as Vibe Series). Rima’s talent for spotting emerging artists has contributed to global dance music’s growth in the Middle East\nJayesh Veralkar Another of the top movers n shakers in Dubai’s alternate music scene. Part of the Dolby Middle East & Africa team\, founder of Vinyl Souk DXB\, co-founder of and a resident selector at Honeycomb Hi-Fi\nKaram Toubba A producer at Phenomena Productions\, creators of the Last Seen Live platform for local musicians. He’s played in bands since 2004\, was Music Director for Decibel DXB\, curates MiZa Community Radio\, and DJs himself\n\nTarik Omar moderates. His chops include Bahrain’s FarmFest\, establishing community arts space Malja in collaboration with Red Bull\, working with MUTEK’s DigiLab in Dubai\, and a day job as AV Coordinator at the Sharjah Art Foundation. \nThat should run from 8.30 to around 9.45pm\, and afterwards the private bar is open till 11. Incidentally\, KAC has stuck a new label on its panel sessions – the ‘Arts Unfiltered Series’\, which better describes the vibe they want to nurture. \nAccess to the Club’s evenings is free\, sort of\, but (a) you have to be a member … and membership is free\, too\, but you have to be nominated by an existing club member since this “ensures the sound\, organic growth of a trusted community”; and (b) the venue requires a minimum F&B spend in advance. These packages start at AED 75 for three soft drinks or AED 110 for two alcoholic drinks. But hey you were going to buy a drink anyhow\, right?

SUMMARY:Mathilde Magnier: What We Leave Behind
DESCRIPTION:This series of images of the UAE\, started when Mathilde Magnier Rabate moved to the Emirates in 2014\, attempts to document the impact of the country’s rapid transformation on the Emirati traditional landscape and ecosystems. In a part of the world where nature long remained untouched\, the photographer’s aim is to question how such changes may transform the local environment as well as the relationship between people and their natural habitat. \nMathilde Magnier Rabate was featured at this year’s RAK Fine Arts Festival. We were also impressed with a thoughtful and sharply-realised essay on change shown at Alliance Française Dubai a year ago. This one should be as good. \nTo 13 November.

SUMMARY:Jamal Tayara-Baroudy: Ways of Seeing
DESCRIPTION:A solo exhibition by the UAE-based Lebanese artist\, an alumna of Tashkeel’s Critical Practice Programme 2022. \nThe subject of Jamal’s research over the last 18 months has been the giant milkweed\, a species of flowering plant native to MENASA that is often seen as invasive and toxic but has applications in agriculture\, petroleum\, roofing\, traditional medicine\, and cosmetics. The artist has used various parts of it in producing this new body of work\, including pods\, fibres\, seeds\, stalks\, and leaves. \nThe exhibition raises awareness about the importance of plants as a natural\, sustainable resource. It serves as a call to revisit the collective wisdom of cultures and reconnect with the values and properties of flora\, once revered yet today regarded with contempt. \nTo 8 December. \n\n

SUMMARY:Wednesday Night Impro: Maestro

After each round you score the players on a scale of 1 to 5\, and the one with the lowest score is eliminated. DESCRIPTION:Violinist David Garrett has built a reputation for his fearless playing and genre-defying repertoire (he has won awards in both classical and pop categories). A genuine child prodigy\, he became the youngest artist to sign with Deutsche Grammophon at 13; aged 15\, he recorded all 24 Caprices by Paganini\, famously among the most difficult pieces written for violin. He studied at The Juilliard School in New York with Itzhak Perlman and has been described by Yehudi Menuhin as “the greatest violinist of his generation”. \nOver the past two decades David Garrett has performed with many of the world’s leading orchestras and conductors and reached new audiences around the globe with his classical and crossover repertoire. \nLate last year he released a new album\, Iconic\, which pays homage to the great violinists of the golden age. It represents a personal selection of repertoire gems\, including new arrangements for violin\, guitar and orchestra of pieces by Bach\, Gluck\, Mendelssohn\, Schumann\, Dvorák\, and Kreisler\, among others. Having been specially arranged for violin\, guitar\, and orchestra\, these pieces take on a fresh\, intimate\, and distinctive character. \nGarrett is joined for this concert by his guitarist and co-arranger\, Franck van der Heijden\, who also directs Orchestra The Prezent. “I’ve recorded many virtuoso albums myself\,” says the violinist. “This time it was particularly important to me to refocus on the essentials\, on what really speaks to the heart.”

SUMMARY:RAUXA CIA: The Crisis of Imagination
DESCRIPTION:RAUXA CIA\, a performance duo from Spain\, combines modern circus art and theatre in this story of two adults suddenly regaining their childhood imagination – “for a fleeting moment they find themselves in a world where anything is possible\,” says the blurb. “It’s only when this magical world disappears they realise that the delicate boundary between reality and imagination is defined solely by one’s perspective.” \nWe’re promised a one-hour show that is “touching\, absurd\, and profoundly sincere … Its multi-layered storytelling resonates with universal themes of kids’ imagination\, wordless storytelling\, simplicity\, and humour that transcend language barriers”. It’s inventive\, funny\, and clever.r\, wordless circus-like performance with a balloon and stepladder. \nThere are three more shows on 28 October.

SUMMARY:Global Notes: Linus Roth & Boris Kusnezow
DESCRIPTION:This is the gala opening performance for the Global Notes Series from Dubai Opera in collaboration with Encore Performing Arts. Global Notes is a new recital/concert programme “dedicated to celebrating the vibrant tapestry of cultural diversity and supporting young musicians from around the world”; we think in essence this means an opportunity to hear some excellent musicians in a relatively intimate setting\, though the phrase “gala opening” suggests it won’t be exactly informal … The ticket price includes a drink\, incidentally. \nLinus Roth\, who plays the 1703 Dancla Stradivarius on loan from Landesbank Baden-Württemberg\, is noted for his stylistic knowledge (as well as his performances as a soloist and chamber musician he is also an academic teacher of music and has been artistic director of music festivals) and his charismatic personality. For Linus’s Dubai debut we’re promised a programme of pieces from Brahms to Bartók that highlight his virtuosity and dynamic musicality. \nAccompanying him is one of the most sought-after collaborative pianists of his generation.\, Boris Kusnezow.

SUMMARY:Mayar Obeido: Mutual Change
DESCRIPTION:Over the last year\, the Dubai-based Syrian artist has produced a large body of work that explores the interconnectedness of everyday life. Interested in the concept of change and the visual possibilities of documenting this process\, Obeido’s work considers how the passage of time can alter an object’s appearance and physical state; as the monotony of daily routines causes us to interact and pay attention to the spaces and things that form reality\, the artist encourages a deeper look into how we experience everyday objects as a means of understanding consciousness. \nWhereas figurative painting and drawing are typically understood as snapshots of a time and place\, Obeido reimagines the compositional space as a site where images seem to evolve in real time. He achieves this sense of continuous motion by first covering his canvases with collaged newspapers that serve as a sort of timestamp\, establishing context. Using charcoal\, he then draws his riotous scenes over these textured surfaces. The paintings are finished with atmospheric washes of acrylic paint that bring these disparate layers together while illuminating his darkened scenes. \nTo 30 November. \nAbove: Mayar Obeido\, Apple Observer 2 (2023)

SUMMARY:Kenny Garrett: Sounds from the Ancestors
DESCRIPTION:One of modern jazz’s most influential living masters recently released an album titled Sounds from the Ancestors. “The concept initially was about trying to get some of the musical sounds that I remembered as a kid growing up – sounds that lift your spirit from people like John Coltrane\, Aretha Franklin\, Marvin Gaye\, and the spiritual side of the church\,” says Garrett. “When I started to think about them\, I realised it was the spirit from my ancestors.” \nThe result is clearly based in the rich jazz\, R&B\, and gospel history of his hometown of Detroit\, but also reflects a modern cosmopolitan vibe – notably music from France\, Cuba\, Nigeria and Guadeloupe. Miles Davis’ On The Corner is cited as an influence\, but mostly for its inventive approach towards extending the jazz vocabulary; Garrett is offering music that is much more melodic and sits comfortably within the modern jazz tradition. \nShould be a good evening.

SUMMARY:Lubaina Himid and Magda Stawarska: Plaited Time / Deep Water
DESCRIPTION:Lubaina Himid’s first exhibition in the region is something of a coup for Sharjah Art Foundation. Developed over several years\, it has been conceived together with Magda Stawarska\, who is internationally renowned for her practice of ‘inner listening’—a collaborative process of listening to cities. The results of their intimate encounters unfold across multiple media\, such as in the four new commissions presented within the exhibition. \nPlaited Time / Deep Water is imagined in dialogue with Sharjah’s architecture\, its soundscapes\, and the feelings evoked by its proximity to the sea. At the heart of the show is a newly imagined presentation of Zanzibar (1998–2023)\, a series of paintings by Himid situated within a distinct architecture and sonic installation created by Stawarska; in the series\, life-long journeys of return are presented as a sensorial encounter for visitors who are invited to listen and experience memory unfolding. Across the galleries\, daily ritual is explored alongside the artists’ continued engagement with language and its potential embodiment. In Plaited Time / Deep Water\, the personal archive finds its rejoinder in Sharjah’s changing light through lyric\, voice and song. \nThe exhibition is curated by Dr Omar Kholeif\, Sharjah Art Foundation’s Director of Collections and Senior Curator. “In Plaited Time / Deep Water\, the personal archive finds its rejoinder in Sharjah’s changing light through lyric\, voice and song. The results of Lubaina’s and Magda’s encounters can be experienced across multiple media in this exhibition\, as the artists use painting\, poetry\, language and sound to unfold their own histories and memories\, as well as those held within Sharjah\,” said Dr Kholeif. \nAbive: Lubaina Himid\, In Your Dreams (2021/2022)\n \nTo 28 January.

SUMMARY:Nabil Nahas: Tethys
DESCRIPTION:After months of renovations\, Lawrie Shabibi is reopening with a show by the pioneering Lebanese American artist Nabil Nahas — who was actually the first artist Lawrie Shabibi exhibited\, back in 2011. \nNahas looks like a great choice. Noted as a master of colour\, texture and atmosphere\, Nahas takes his inspiration from a diverse range of influences – especially nature\, and the geometric and chromatic qualities of Arabic art. His best known series are his thickly encrusted starfish and fractal paintings\, built up by layer upon layer of acrylic mixed with pumice and finished in vivid colours; and his landscapes\, expressive portraits of cedars\, olive trees and palms that reconnect him with the places of his childhood. \nTo 5 January. \nAbove: Nabil Nahas\, Untitled (2023) \n  \n  \n
