SUMMARY:Sarah Almehairi and Bernhard Buhmann: The Errantries of Sarah Almehairi and Bernhard Buhmann
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition of recent paintings by the two artists that feature “unexpected protrusions and punctures … that are\, as the philosopher Édouard Glissant describes it\, ‘a poetics of errantry’\, both adventurous wanderings and rebellious misdirections. Referencing forms and motifs from within their past works\, the artists lure us in with the familiar\, only to journey to new discoveries and connections …” \nFor Almehairi\, this process entails a build-up of layers that may be linked but remain—as the series title states—‘off centred’. Buhmann’s latest works he describes as a “detox version\,” cast out into the world with certain elements removed. \nTo 9 November. \n

SUMMARY:Istoria: A Retrospective Reimagining Middle Eastern Feminism with Leila Nseir
DESCRIPTION:This retrospective for the late Syrian artist honours Leila Nseir’s legacy and celebrates her contributions to art and feminism. \nNseir’s art was rooted in humanist concerns and feminist thought\, addressing themes of conflict\, inequality\, and poverty; her career was impacted by gender persecution and patriarchal attitudes\, both within her close-knit and broader communities. “Nseir’s intentional reinterpretation of historical forms demonstrates a distinctive fusion of intimacy\, complexity\, and human suffering” says the gallery. \nShe started with sculpture but deemed it too masculine a medium. She then embarked on a long journey in painting and drawing\, but developed oil paint poisoning. Transitioning from oils to acrylics\, graphite\, pastels\, and eventually developing a unique monotype woodcut print technique\, she continued to explore and push artistic boundaries. \nNseir’s later pieces delve into the complexities of diaspora\, migration\, and the interplay between tradition and modernity. She depicted females as a mirror\, reflecting Syria and its embodiment of strength\, complexity\, and intricacy. \nTo 12 November. \nAbove: Leila Nseir\, Untitled (1986)

SUMMARY:Kaikhan Salakhov: Astral Space Exploration ‐ The Cosmic Renaissance
DESCRIPTION:Salakhov’s work is “a profound exploration of the intersection between science\, art\, and spirituality\, using sacred geometry to illuminate deep cosmic truths”. On show are 36 “meticulously crafted” acrylic paintings that reimagine Renaissance art through a modern lens\, blending classical aesthetics with contemporary scientific concepts; viewers are invited to explore the geometric language of the artworks\, uncovering deeper meanings and contemplating humanity’s future in space. Each painting addresses a specific topic and is accompanied by an explanation that poses questions for viewers to consider. \nTo 18 November.

SUMMARY:I Kept The Night Vigil …

SUMMARY:Sumayyah Samaha: Lines and Forms
DESCRIPTION:A range of works from the Lebanese-born NYC-based artist that are rooted in spontaneity and the intuitive interplay between forms and lines. The exhibition continues an exploration of form\, line\, and colour in a series that began in 2014 and continues to evolve with each new creation. \nSays the gallery: “Each piece in the series begins with the artist laying down forms on a blank canvas\, allowing one form to naturally lead to another\, creating a visual conversation. These forms\, each with its own narrative\, are connected by lines that serve as guiding threads\, helping the viewer navigate the complex stories that unfold across the canvas. \nTo 4 November. \nAbove: Sumayyah Samaha\, Untitled Construction (2024)

SUMMARY:Maria Jose Benvenuto: Nature’s Pulse
DESCRIPTION:A series of vibrant abstracts inspired by the landscape of North Head National Park in Manly\, Australia\, the area where Benvenuto works. The series is guided by intuition and emerges directly from the subconscious\, drawing on the deep reservoirs of memory; the artist captures the dynamic energy of contrasting colours\, interweaving the fundamental elements of colour\, form\, and composition to evoke the essence of landscapes. \nBenvenuto says: “Through this series\, I aim to convey the unique vibrancy and freedom of the landscapes that inspire me\, both in Australia and beyond. In Dubai\, a city that embodies innovation and creativity\, I hope my work will resonate with viewers and inspire a shared appreciation for the universal beauty of our world’s diverse landscapes.” \nTo 4 November. \nAbove: Maria Jose Benvenuto\, Oceanic vibrations (2024)

SUMMARY:Bound: Textiles Between Loss and Repair
DESCRIPTION:The last in a series of exhibitions investigating contemporary approaches to fibre art curated by Murtaza Vali\, this group show builds on notions of nurture and care long associated with cloth – which envelopes our bodies from our first breath to our last. Largely abstract\, these works resemble both shrouds and bandages\, blurring distinctions between our experience of loss or injury and our capacity for recovery. \nThe artists: Dana Awartani\, Jumana Manna\, Hana Miletić\, Dala Nasser Khalil Rabah \nTo 2 November.

SUMMARY:Wednesday Night Impro: Maestro
DESCRIPTION:The Courtyard’s regular evening of elimination improv. Ten actors converge for a night of scenes\, songs and games based on audience suggestions. After each round you score the players on a scale of 1 to 5\, and the one with the lowest score is knocked out. Eventually only one remains\, to be crowned the Maestro. “Fast-paced\, unpredictable\, and hilarious” says the promo\, and you couldn’t argue with that. As with all Courtyard improv evenings it’s free\, but you need to put your name on the guestlist (via the website); and it’s first-come first-served\, so get there early to grab a seat. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n

SUMMARY:Chicago
DESCRIPTION:The second weekend of performances for “the most exciting musical of its generation” (The Times). \nFirst seen in 1975 and still an all-round stunner\, it is based on a 1926 play by one-time reporter Maurine Dallas Watkins and is built around actual crimes on which she reported; the book by Fred Ebb and Bob Fosse paints a tantalising tale of passion\, murder\, greed\, betrayal\, and redemption through the journey of two fiercely competitive women – aspiring jazz performer Roxie Hart and former vaudevillian (and double-murderess) Velma Kelly. John Kander and Fred Ebb were responsible for the score\, with each song modelled on a traditional vaudeville number or a vaudeville performer – a format that helped to make explicit the show’s comparison between justice\, showbiz\, and contemporary society. \nPerformances: \n19 September 7pm\n20 September 7pm\n21 September 1pm\n21 September 7pm\n22 September 1pm\n22 September 6pm \nThere are the door-open times; we’d guess the actual performances start an hour later. Ticket prices are higher for weekend shows

SUMMARY:Sarah Alagroobi: Slanted Dreamscape
DESCRIPTION:Alagroobi’s evocative\, highly textured landscapes provide a glimpse into “a world where reality and imagination intersect”. Her practice celebrates the physical and metaphysical\, using layers of acrylic to sculpt imagined landscapes that blur the boundaries between the tangible and the abstract; the gallery says her paintings “offer a direct and unfiltered representation of her artistic process\, presenting depth and surface in their most authentic forms”.
SUMMARY:Art Here 2024
DESCRIPTION:Louvre Abu Dhabi’s Art Here 2024\, now in its fourth edition\, has rapidly become a significant entry in the Middle East’s art exhibition calendar – a regional competition for 3D work that benefits from sponsorship by luxe watchmaker Richard Mille to the extent that at the end of the exhibition one of the five artists shown will get a not insignificant $60\,000 cash award as part of the Richard Mille Art Prize. \nThis year\, Louvre Abu Dhabi and guest curator Simon Njami invited responses to the theme ‘Awakenings’; the selected artists are tasked with translating the concept of openness into visual forms via sculptures or audiovisual installations “that address questions of today and the near future”. The resulting artworks will be shown at the museum from 20 September to 15 December. \nThere were 230 submissions in total\, and five have been selected for the exhibition. The competition this year has been expanded to include North Africa alongside the GCC\, and three of the shortlist came from outside the Gulf. Franco-Tunisian artist Férielle Doulain-Zouari explores the coexistence of natural and artificial worlds via installations\, sculptures\, and weaving. Moataz Nasr from Egypt investigates the geopolitics and social development of Egypt and Africa\, testing the notion of identity and belonging in a world of globalisation. And Nicène Kossentini (Tunisia) uses video to capture the slow transformation of people and things\, revealing intimate places and bodies and uncovering the buried truths of her heritage. \nThe other two on the shortlist will probably be more familiar to local arty audiences – Lamya Gargash (Dubai) and Sarah Almehairi (Abu Dhabi). Gargash usually works in film and photography to document the essence of inhabited and abandoned spaces\, delving into cultural heritage amidst rapid modernisation\, and capturing the beauty of human trace and the value of the mundane – “my desire for seclusion\, and my grieving for our inevitable fate\, has led me to find beauty in ordinary things and bring to life these reticent moments in time …” She’s a Third Line artist and has had several shows there\, including one of our favourites. \nSarah Almehairi has worked in various media – sculpture\, painting\, book art\, fibre art\, photography\, poetry – to explore themes of identity\, language\, materiality and memory. Now signed with Carbon 12\, she was part of the 2019 Youth Takeover at Jameel Arts Centre\, was one of Abu Dhabi Art’s 2022 Beyond: Emerging Artists (a group which also went to Cromwell Place the following year)\, and was commissioned for Alserkal Avenue’s public art projects in 2022 for Alserkal Art Week – she transformed the passages alongside Concrete into a rather good visual poem with her work don’t overlook the weather (as your thoughts collect)\, asking visitors to linger and observe both the earth and the sky as they passed through. \nThe Art Here 2024 exhibition take place under Louvre Abu Dhabi’s iconic dome\, including the courtyard with the Damascene fountain and extending via a passageway towards a meditative shallow pool and the Jenny Holzer wall installation. \n

SUMMARY:Andy Warhol\, The Glam Factory
DESCRIPTION:A collection of more than 100 of Warhol’s works\, curated by Nada Ghandour\, which aims to trace Warhol’s rise from his modest beginnings in commercial illustration to his status as the Pope of Pop Art via screenprints\, photos\, and magazines from the 1960s to the 1980s. (The good news: seems there are none of his films.) \nThe exhibition is organized into two sections\, one for the man himself and the other to The Factory. Andy Warhol: From Shadows to Light covers the significant milestones of his career and his aesthetic evolution\, from his advertising drawings to the Campbell’s Soup Cans. The Glam Factory: Art Meets Business / The Business Man Artist focuses on his signature painted portraits (Marilyn Monroe\, Elizabeth Taylor\, Mao Zedong) and includes commissions and collaborations (Edward Kennedy\, Paloma Picasso\, Keith Haring). Additionally\, it features stars who shared Warhol’s extravagant social life and sometimes collaborated artistically with him (Calvin Klein\, Giorgio Armani\, Mick Jagger). \nDesigned by NYC-based architect Ibrahim Kombarji\, the exhibition has two recreated spaces for the environment that Warhol frequented – The Silver Factory\, a multidisciplinary creation space designed by Warhol for himself and collaborators: and Studio 54\, the near-legendary nightclub in Midtown Manhattan famous where the glitterati came to be seen. \nTo 31 October

SUMMARY:Go Back for Murder
DESCRIPTION:Agatha Christie wrote more than a dozen plays as well as the novels that made her name\, and this is one — written in 1960\, an adaptation of her story Five Little Pigs with Hercule Poirot removed from the story. \nIt’s a murder mystery with an unusual twist\, the action moving from past to present and illuminating the danger of relying on personal testimony warped by time\, prejudice and perception. Carla Crale’s mother died in prison\, serving a sentence for her father’s murder. A posthumous letter from her convinces Carla that her mother was wrongfully convicted: with the help of family solicitor Justin Fogg\, Carla persuades all those who were present on the day of her father’s death to return to the scene of the crime and ‘go back’ 15 years to recount their version of events. By studying each suspect’s testimony and the various inconsistencies between them\, the drama arrives at a disturbing and terrible truth … \nLovely stuff. The reliable Sarah Potter directs. \nThere are further performances on 21 and 22 September. \n

SUMMARY:TootArd | Gaye Su Akyol
DESCRIPTION:A second evening of the End of Summer Dance Party in the Black Box theatre – a genre-defying concert that puts two very different kinds of artist in each half. From Gaye Su Akyol you get an innovative mix of Turkish psychedelia and folk song\, surf music and 90s Western rock; TootArd\, a genre-fluid duo comprising brothers Hasan and Rami Nakhleh\, presents a fusion of global pop hooks and quarter-tone melodic lines to deliver a distinctive blend of disco and dance music that draws inspiration from the rich musical traditions of SWANA (SouthWest Asia\, North Africa) and beyond. \nThere are two performances: on 19 September Gaye Su Akyol went on first\, for 20 September it’s TootArd.

SUMMARY:Majd Kurdieh: Butterflies
DESCRIPTION:A solo show for the Aleppo-born Lebanese-based artist with a very distinctive practice – he paints with cartoon-like characters to talk about the current state of the world\, usually a boy (Fasoon) and a girl (Fasooneh) who are always smiling despite the fact that their world is filled with hardships; they share it with a group of animal characters called the Very Scary Butterfly Gang\, Their main mission is to combat the sadness of the world with their sole weapon\, the flower. For the current show\, Kurdieh’s fifth at Fann A Porter by our count\, he’s concentrating on the butterflies: “In the hope of a future in which the field comes back laughing and the seas are more merciful\, when the fires go out and the birds return to their nests\, and a young painter less careless than me comes and says to you: ‘I painted the butterfly because I love the colour of its wings'”. \nTo 21 October. \nAbove: Majd Kurdieh\, Untitled (2024)
