SUMMARY:New York Legends at Broadway Theater\, Emirates Palace
DESCRIPTION:A second chance to catch this “unmissable comedy lineup” as the blurb puts it. It’s an Abu Dhabi Comedy Week evening with five standups (“legends”? Well\, maybe) that come from or have a connection with New York City – so Dubai’s very own Mina Liccione is included because she comes from NYC. On the bill: \nThe Comedy Godfather: Tony Woods\nRom-Com Specialist: Ian Lara Smooth\nOperator: Simeon Goodson\nBroadway Baby: Mina Liccione\nHilarious Haitian: Wil Sylvince

SUMMARY:Behind The Mountains: dir Mohamed ben Attia (2023)
DESCRIPTION:In this quite surprising supernatural drama\, a man fed up with the chains of his humdrum life lashes out only to discover he possesses a logic-defying gift – the power to fly. The film departs from the director’s previous social realism\, but retains his well-established interest in emotionally intricate protagonists and the complications of parent-child relationships; for the son\, the flying is a literal leap of faith and validation that his father is more than the negative stories he’s heard all his young life. Arabic with English subtitles; recommended. \nThis film screens in the sixth edition of the Manarat’s CinemaMAS film festival\, curated this time by filmmaker and visual artist Scandar Copti – head of the Film and New Media program at NYU Abu Dhabi from 2014 to 2017. Currently\, he is still teaching filmmaking at NYUAD while working on an upcoming feature film. \nIndividual films on weekdays are AED 30 per head\, weekends are AED 50 per day\, and there’s an all-inclusive ticket at AED 150.

SUMMARY:Library Circles: Azza Aboualam
DESCRIPTION:The Jameel’s Library Circles is a series of research\, talks\, and experimental interventions by UAE practitioners that offers alternative research methodologies with a focus on ‘thinking in public’. For this iteration\, Azza Aboualam – an Assistant Professor at Zayed University Dubai with an M.Arch from Yale – is displaying results of her investigations into the evolution of architectural typology within spiritual spaces in Sharjah and New York – notably\, how architectural form shapes spiritual practice\, with regional architectural elements. The project underscores the transcultural dialogue within the built environment\, offering insights into the employment of architectural forms and considerations in mosque spaces across these landscapes. \nTo 25 November.

SUMMARY:Déserts: dir Faouzi Bensaïdi (2023)
DESCRIPTION:A road buddy comedy with a twist or two\, wry humour throughout\, gorgeous camerawork\, and an all-pervading good sense of humanity and absurdity. Two petty crooks\, Mehdi and Hamid\, drive around the villages of southern Morocco\, trying to recover a backlog of loans for their agency that have not been repaid by villagers overwhelmed by poverty and drought. But then they meet a highwayman … In Arabic with English subtitles. \nThis film screens in the sixth edition of the Manarat’s CinemaMAS film festival\, curated this time by filmmaker and visual artist Scandar Copti – head of the Film and New Media program at NYU Abu Dhabi from 2014 to 2017. SUMMARY:Wednesday Night Impro: Maestro
DESCRIPTION:Ten actors converge for a night of scenes\, songs and games based on audience suggestions. After each round you score the players on a scale of 1 to 5\, and the one with the lowest score is eliminated. Eventually only one remains\, to be crowned the Maestro. “Fast-paced\, unpredictable\, and hilarious” says the promo\, and you couldn’t argue with that. As with all Courtyard improv evenings it’s free\, but you need to put your name on the guestlist (via the website); and it’s first-come first-served\, so get there early enough to grab a seat. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Fremont: dir Babak Jalali (2023)
DESCRIPTION:Beautiful but troubled\, 23-year-old Donya finds her promoted to writing the mantras inside fortune cookies because the wise owner of the factory believes that people with memories write beautifully. Donya\, an Afghan refugee with PTSD\, Donya already has memories aplenty – which may explain her insomnia\, the way she stares solemnly into space\, or the maturity that she possesses as a 23-year-old. It also means that\, as her boss predicts\, her fortune cookie messages pierce the hearts of strangers … This Jarmusch-like black-and-white comedy is a deadpan delight that eschews ostentatious set pieces and favours sombre reflection. It was a big hit at Sundance and SWSX last year. Recommended.

SUMMARY:At the Edge of Land
DESCRIPTION:This group exhibition\, curated by Lucas Morin\, highlights unexpectedly interconnected geographies\, resources and commodities\, moving between land and sea to tell stories of conflict\, erosion and extraction; it’s based on works from the Art Jameel Collection plus loans and new commissions by 18 international artists. It originated at Hayy Arts in Jeddah (where it ran November 2023 to April 2024) and the works presented trace the trade routes on which both Dubai and Jeddah are located – the busy maritime path connecting East Asia and Europe via the Gulf\, the Red Sea and the Suez Canal.  It’s accompanied by a film programme in Gallery 9 up to 18 August 18. To 29 September. \nThe artists: \nAbbas Akhavan\nRouzbeh Akhbari\nJananne Al-Ani\nTarek Al Ghoussein\nIosu Aramburu\nAu Sow Yee\nChihoi\nBady Dalloul\nAref El Rayess\nDaniele Genadry\nHo Rui An\nRanjit Kandalgaonkar\nLala Rukh\nHira Nabi\nFazal Rizvi\nSarker Protick\nSim Chi Yin\nJoar Songcuya\nYou Khin\nZarina

SUMMARY:No Bears: dir Jafar Panahi (2022)
DESCRIPTION:The jailed Iranian director Jafar Panahi plays a version of himself\, forced to shoot his new film in a village near the Turkish border whose inhabitants are encouraged to be scared of supposed “bears” roaming the countryside – just as the Iranian people are supposed to be afraid of their morality police … There’s a convoluted plot that mixes reality with the story being film\, but ultimately No Bears taps into an Iranian movie-making strategy based on the need to evade censorship with complexity and ambiguity in tackling contemporary political issues. Recommended. \nIn Turkish\, Persian\, and Azerbaijani with English subtitles. \nThis film screens in the sixth edition of the Manarat’s CinemaMAS film festival\, curated this time by filmmaker and visual artist Scandar Copti – head of the Film and New Media program at NYU Abu Dhabi from 2014 to 2017. SUMMARY:Houda Bakkali: Digital Art\, Digital Culture
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition that aims to demonstrate the power of digital art to break spatial\, temporal and generational borders\, “creating synergies between different audiences and making art not only timeless\, but also universal\, close and understandable”. It features work by Bakkali alongside educational information about digital art\, creative process and the uses of art and new technologies. Says the artist: “Digital art is not a trend\, it is the present and the future. My art represents the need to tell stories through captivating and surprising environments\, in which the viewer can immerse themselves\, as is the case with augmented reality. It’s a way to experience a variety of sensations and emotions with my artwork. It also allows me to expand the story and give it life or several lives\, as many as I want. In addition\, it’s a way to create more fun and unique environments\, involving the viewer in the artwork and making it grow over time with new stories\, settings and characters. \nTo 31 July.

SUMMARY:All That Breathes: dir Shaunak Sen (2022)
DESCRIPTION:From their makeshift bird hospital in their tiny basement\, two brothers —  Mohammad Saud and Nadeem Shehzad – try to care for thousands of the black kites that struggle in New Delhi’s smog-choked skies. As environmental toxicity and civil unrest escalate\, this documentary shows how the relationship between this Muslim family and the neglected bird provides a poetic commentary on the city’s collapsing ecology and rising social tensions. The Rotten Tomatoes consensus calls the film “a poetic tribute to tenacity” that makes “a broader point about finding triumph within tragedy”. Hindi with English subtitles.

SUMMARY:Nezouh: dir Soudade Kaadan (2022)
DESCRIPTION:Fourteen-year-old Zeina lives with her mother and father in Damascus\, one of the few remaining families in a devastated neighbourhood. Covert visits from a local boy offer Zeina glimpses of freedom outside the oppressive control of her father – but her escape comes as much through her imagination as it does through her connection with the boy. Nezouh finds real poetry in the dust and wreckage of the city. SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Rachid Koraïchi: An Ode to Intertwined Histories
DESCRIPTION:A solo exhibition with examples of many of the disciplines and media that made up Koraïchi’s practice\, all “showcasing his abiding fascination with the creation of deeply layered seams within the spiritual\, political and intellectual”.\nKoraïchi often speaks of belonging entirely to writing\, wanting to reveal the secrets of texts by great mystic poets and writers such as Rûmî\, Ibn Arabi\, Attar and Rabia Al Adawya. “Writing and drawing are not two different things'” he said in a recent interview. “They are essentially one and the same – they come\, so to speak\, from the same breath”. Koraïchi’s ‘alphabet of memory’ is anchored in the world of glyphs and cyphers\, where he nurses his fascination for texts function\, aesthetics and cultural significance. \nThe exhibition is centred on the two site-specific scultpures Les Prieurs and Les Priants; accompanying them will be 2D work ranging from 3m silk organza tapestries to meticulously detailed canvases. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Zhivago Duncan: The Rare But Known Phenomenon
DESCRIPTION:It’s a pleasure to find an artist who is prepared to expand on their principles\, and to do with Zhivago Duncan’s level of articulation. “Within this new collection\,” writes Duncan\, “I have endeavoured to distill the complexity of ideas and images into a meditative practice that mirrors the cycles of nature\, whether it be the gentle unfolding of a sunrise\, the fiery blaze of a sunset\, or any other natural phenomenon typically devoid of philosophical interpretation … In the current landscape of our world\, characterised by pervasive confusion and a prevailing sense of complacency in personal and material achievements\, I am compelled to recognise the interconnectedness of humanity as a collective entity …” \nDuncan says he aims to challenge the conventional understanding of colour through his paintings: “its existence is not absolute but rather contingent upon perception”. And “like a palate cleanser between sushi courses\, these paintings serve to clear the cluttered recesses of the mind and realign one’s focus on the present moment … With each brushstroke\, I remain anchored in the present\, embracing the transient beauty of this moment in time”.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Omran Younis: Rise of the Cactus
DESCRIPTION:A new body of work in this solo exhibition from Syrian artist Orman Younis offers “a poignant social commentary on his surroundings\, the human condition\, and current state of political affairs in the region” that “combines ideas of post-Modernism with expressionist techniques to develop a painterly language which can be universally understood”. The cactus is provided as a symbol of resilience – and of patience\, since the word for cactus and patience is the same in Arabic – as a symbolic commentary on the war in his home country.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Dima Srouji: Charts for a Resurrection
DESCRIPTION:The first-ever solo exhibition for artist\, architect and researcher Dima Srouji\, whose work acts as a form of political commentary and as a place-making (or un-making) tool – “Interested in the ground\, objects\, displacement\, restitution\, forgeries\, and living archives\, the artist looks for potential ruptures in the ground where imaginary liberation is possible.” Srouji collaborates closely with archaeologists\, anthropologists\, glass blowers and sound designers to develop her architectural projects\, installations\, product designs\, and writing. Working across a diverse range of media including glass\, text\, archival materials\, maps\, and film\, Srouji questions ideas of identity and globalisation through historic strata and space\, in connection to the spirit of a place and displacement.

SUMMARY:Khaled Jarada: Non Key Frame
DESCRIPTION:The title of this exhibition evokes a notion that originates from the world of the moving image. Key frames are those that define a scene in a film; they set its starting as well as ending point\, they are typically the most important frames and so they are the ones into which creators put more thought and spend more time developing. Non-key frames are intermediates\, coming between two crucial moments and defined only through an external reference. In this solo show Khaled Jarada finds a similar hierarchy in specific modes of historiography\, where history is reduced to key moments\, key figures\, key geographies\, and key cultures; his work refutes that rigid hierarchy\, instead elevating those devalued and mundane moments\, places\, objects\, and figures to become worthy of display\, appreciation\, and idealization. His figures appear imbalanced\, anxious\, and out of place. The in-betweenness in these works is spatial as well as temporal … To 4 August.

SUMMARY:CinemaMAS Weekend day two
DESCRIPTION:The final afternoon of films in the sixth edition of the Manarat’s CinemaMAS film festival; there’s a single price (AED 50) for the whole programme. (Individual films on weekdays are AED 30 per head\, and there’s an all-inclusive ticket at AED 150 that includes the weekends.) \n\n  \n3pm BlueBack dir Robert Connolly (2022\, 102 mins: still above) \nEco-adventure following a young girl who befriends a magnificent wild blue groper while diving\, becomes a passionate activist for protecting the ecosystem of Australia’s coral reefs from destruction\, and takes on poachers to save her finny friend. \n4.45pm The Diary of a Sky dir Lawrance-Abu Hamdan (2023\, 45 mins) \nWhile the world came to a standstill in many places in 2020 with the onset of the pandemic\, and an almost eerie silence set in\, noise levels in Beirut increased massively – the roar of the generators that compensate for the lack of electricity supply from the gird mingles with the noise of the 50 or so Israeli army drones and fighter jets that fly over the country every day. This documentary is an essayistic collage of videos aggregated by the artist between 2020 and 2021\, a diary that bears witness to the ways in which this atmospheric violence is both terrifying and yet so integrated into daily life that it becomes ignorable in its monotony. \n5.30pm 45th Parallel dir Lawrance-Abu Hamdan (2022\, 15 mins) \nAnother thoughtful piece by the artist Lawrance-Abu Hamdan\, this one analysing the contradictions of borders and laws that govern the Haskell Free Library and Opera House – a building constructed in 1904 that straddles the US-Canadian border. This peculiar site becomes the stage for an investigative monologue about the 2010 shooting of an unarmed 15-year-old Mexican by a U.S. Border Patrol agent and America’s remote murders-by-drone in Afghanistan\, Yemen\, and Pakistan. \n\n5.45pm Walled Unwalled dir Lawrance-Abu Hamdan (2018\, 21 mins) \nIn 2000 there were a total of 15 fortified border walls and fences between sovereign nations. By 2018 there were 63. And yet\, all the time\, millions and millions of invisible cosmic particles called muons are descending into the Earth’s atmosphere and penetrating metres deep through layers of concrete\, soil\, and rock. Scientists have developed a technology to leverage their peculiar physical capacities to allow us to see what lies beneath us – from contraband hidden in lead-lined shipping containers\, to secret chambers inside the pyramids. Now no wall on Earth is impermeable … \n6.05pm Rubber Coated Steel dir Lawrance-Abu Hamdan (2016\, 22 mins) \nIn 2014\, artist and audio investigator Lawrence Abu Hamdan was asked to examine audio files that recorded the shots that killed Nadeem Nawara and Mohamed Abu Daher on the West Bank. Rubber Coated Steel is a work that reflects on that process. It does not preside over the voices of the victims but seeks to amplify their silence\, questioning the ways in which rights are being heard today. \n6.30pm Once Removed dir Lawrance-Abu Hamdan (2019\, 29 mins) \nDocumentary in the life and work of Bassel Abi Chahine\, a writer and historian who managed to obtain rare objects\, photographs and interviews related to the militias led by Walid Jumblatt during the Lebanese Civil War. \n7pm Yellow Bus dir Wendy Bednarz (2023\, 112 mins) \nSet in an unnamed Arabian Gulf country (but you probably know which it is)\, this film follows the unbearable tragedy of a young girl who dies in the sweltering desert heat on a school bus. Consumed by grief\, mother Anada sets out to find the truth about who is accountable … Arabic and Hindi with English subtitles.
