The result is a beautifully shot movie\, simple and honest\, about life\, death\, and living … \nScreens as part of a new monthly film programme in Efie’s Rekord Gallery tracing the intertwined histories of African and Arab Liberation Cinema: “through a carefully curated selection of films\, the series interrogates how revolutionary aesthetics\, political struggle\, and the diasporic imagination have shaped\, and continue to shape\, the language of cinema across continents”. It’s organised with Bootleg Griot\, an independent public library project currently ensconced in the Rekord Gallery that is aimed at improving access to literature and print media – especially from writers and collectives of African descent.

DESCRIPTION:New ink drawings on paper and acrylic paintings on canvas from the French-based Syrian artist that offer viewers a journey through colour\, symbolism\, and contemplation. These are works that “reflect on the mystical power of nature\, its geometry and order\, and the existential questions it raises about human nature”\, drawing inspiration from the fields of sunflowers that grow around Ajaj’s Dordogne home. The sunflower is in dialogue with a snake motif. – “while the sunflower follows light\, embodying warmth and optimism\, the snake [is] a signifier of temptation and betrayal; in other traditions\, a symbol of renewal and healing. The works invite viewers to consider that within darkness lies the potential for renewal”.

DESCRIPTION:A solo show by the American artist Daniel Arsham\, known for his works of ‘fictional archaeology’ expressed through sculpture\, architecture\, drawing\, and film – what he calls “future relics of the present.” \nArsham will transform the gallery into a sonic installation with a new sculptural series of copper-wrapped bonsai tree sculptures that double as functional stereo speakers. These works pay homage to Japanese Zen Buddhist culture and Arsham’s own past presentations of sand Zen gardens. \nThere’s also a new suite of works relating to his recent Labyrinth series in cast sand; Arsham’s Stairs in a Labyrinth is a sculptural double portrait – from head-on it appears to be a portrait bust of a sitter\, transforming in the profile view into a maze of architectural levels and stairwells. Carol Mansour’s documentary features 12 Palestinian women living in Lebanon\, Jordan and Palestine\, who draw upon the ancient and enduring art of Palestinian embroidery to share stories about their identities\, tales of resistance and memories of their homeland. As lawyers\, artists\, housewives\, activists\, architects and politicians\, each recounts a distinctly personal story; through the course of the film a collective embroidery begins to take shape\, linking one woman to another.

The story centres on a woodcutter and his family; they find a small girl in the forest who has been thrown from a moving train. The train is heading to Auschwitz\, and she was thrown to some kind of safety by her father … The film is adapted from a 2019 novel by French author and playwright Jean-Claude Grumberg\, about which one reviewer said: “It is difficult … to write a work of fiction about the Holocaust that is original; even simply in this sense\, Grumberg’s work succeeds where many have failed”. Much the same applies to the film. Recommended. \nIn French with English subtitles. AF members pay AED 25.
