Captured through Al Gurg’s attentive and empathetic gaze during a six-day journey in 2021\, this work offers “a nuanced exploration of the mountain as a living\, evolving ecosystem shaped by natural forces and human presence … His images reveal the mountain’s layered habitats\, from mist-laden forests and regenerating moorlands affected by recent fires to the fragile ice caps near the summit … At the heart of Everyman’s Mountain lies a meditation on scale and significance”. \nEveryman’s Mountain is not about conquest but about process: the act of seeing\, appreciating\, and bearing witness. DESCRIPTION:Malik Thomas Jalil Kydd’s body of work delves into his Iraqi heritage\, while bridging painting\, drawing and fibre art – “reconciling the tactility of textiles with a sensitive examination of form”\, as the gallery puts it. “Focusing primarily on the male figure drawn to a scale slightly larger than life-size\, Kydd has developed a poetic dialogue between material\, identity\, and culture.” His use of natural materials adds another dimension to the works; so sage\, used for dyeing\, is not only part of the creative process but also a spiritual practice grounded in both tradition and personal exploration. DESCRIPTION:Cinema has always been very interested in itself. In Cédric Kahn’s Making of we are introduced to a movie\, a story about workers fighting to protect their factory from being relocated. And we meet a variety of characters involved in it – there is the director (Denis Podalydes) who can’t seem to get everything into place\, the producer (Emmanuelle Bercot) who wants to rewrite the ending and cut the budget\, the veteran lead actor (Jonathan Cohen) who is a diva on set\,and the budding director (Stefan Crepon) who has been commissioned to shoot a behind-the-scenes ‘making of’ documentary. \nThe result makes for a satisfyingly complex fly-on-the-wall comedy\, with a large ensemble cast of French actors having fun with the long list of roles. There’s a nod to social topics too; the issues discussed in the film-within-a-film – underpaid workers\, torn labourers\, possibilities of losing work – all mirror the stressed film crew trying to just finish this production. And it’s timely\, given the strikes that have been going on in Hollywood recently … \nIn French with English subtitles. AF members pay AED 25\, the rest of us pay AED 35. \n
