DESCRIPTION:You can’t fault the Junction’s resident H72 theatre company for lack of ambition; Othello is an expansive play\, full of big characters and demanding powerful acting to deliver Shakespeare’s tale of jealousy\, interpersonal politics and social commentary. We know little of this show – it wasn’t featuring on the Junction’s website when we were compiling the Agenda – but anything directed by Gautam Goenka is going to be worth seeing. \nThere are shows on 17\, 18 and 19 May.

SUMMARY:Les Triplettes de Belleville: dir Sylvain Chomet (2003)
DESCRIPTION:A quite brilliant full-length animated comedy\, largely dialogue-free (though this version is in French with English subtitles: it was released in the UK as Belleville Rendezvous) about an elderly woman on a quest to rescue her grandson\, a Tour de France cyclist called Champion; he’s been kidnapped by the French mafia for nefarious purposes that become clear as the film progresses. She is accompanied by Champion’s loyal if obese dog Bruno\, and she’s joined by the Triplets of Belleville – a trio of eccentric music hall singers from the 1930s. It’s a great story\, something of a modern classic of animation\, and the idiosyncratic visuals are excellent. Highly recommended.

SUMMARY:Mona Ayyash: The Clock Doesn’t Care
DESCRIPTION:For her first solo exhibition\, the culmination of the artist’s participation in the 2024 cycle of the 421 Artistic Development Program\, Ayyash presents a collaborative video piece focusing on small body movements. Created with a group of actors\, dancers\, and performance artists selected through an open call\, the piece is a study of repetitive non-functional movements\, without purpose or productivity\, that questions the tension between passing time and wasting time. \nThe collaborators filmed themselves responding to movement prompts\, encouraging them to consider what ‘doing nothing’ looks like; Ayyash extracts fragments of the collected footage and edits them to be layered one over the other or side-by-side\, constantly changing\, accumulating\, and subtracting. The everyday and the mundane are themes highlighted in work\, as the bodies are stuck repeating their movements in a loop\, going nowhere. Without a clear narrative to hold the spectator’s attention\, the exhibition serves as a playful inquiry into the objective nature of time. \nThis project grew from the artist’s earlier participation in the Homebound Residency Program in 2020\, where she produced a video work titled Folding Bellies in collaboration with five participants from the UAE art community. \nTo 25 August.

After each round you score the players on a scale of 1 to 5\, and the one with the lowest score is eliminated. Eventually only one remains\, to be crowned the Maestro. “Fast-paced\, unpredictable\, and hilarious” says the promo\, and you couldn’t argue with that. They’re both Steinway Artists and promise “a musical journey through time\, weaving together contrasting styles and textures”. The programme includes the Sonata in D Major by Mozart\, Fauré’s Dolly Suite for four hands\, “the playful complexity of Ligeti”\, and Rachmaninoff’s Six Morceaux Op.11 (another four-hander).
