SUMMARY:Echoes of Infinite: Poetry’s Visual Symphony
DESCRIPTION:The Farjam Foundation isn’t a particularly activity gallery\, but it does have access to an excellent private collection that spans early Islam to present-day artistic practice across regional geographies and beyond. So when it puts on a show of selected artworks from The Farjam Collection\, it’s worth paying attention. \nThis one offers a contemporary take on classical themes in four paintings by Iranian artist Arash Nazari\, juxtaposed with ten miniature folios of Shahnameh (aka ‘The Book of Kings’\, Ferdowsi’s epic poem of 940-1020 CE) from the 15th to 17th century. \nThe exhibition seeks to magnify the glories of the detailed\, early illustrations portraying mythical stories of heroic tales\, with their rich tapestry of symbols and legendary characters that reflect ancient beliefs and traditions. Nazari himself is a self-taught Iranian artist who is fascinated by the paintings of the Shahnameh. His practice explores the original techniques of Persian Negaargari — a classical style of miniature painting or illustration that often features elaborate scenes in exquisite detail\, reflecting themes of literature\, mythology\, and royalty\, using fine brushwork and intricate color palettes. \n“The running colours in his paintings evoke a sense of speed\, symbolising the rapid changes that we witness\, the focal point of his works lying in the carefully chosen central scenes from the Shahnameh” says the Foundation’s blurb. And the exhibition’s curator\, Marjan Farjam\, says “this exhibition serves as an encouraging platform for learning\, exploring\, and reflecting on traditional arts\, with the aim of bridging past and present”. \nTo 24 June.

SUMMARY:Ahmad Moualla: Combustions
DESCRIPTION:The Syrian artist’s first solo exhibition with this gallery (and his first show in eight years) is a series of new works on paper created in 2023. Considered one of the pioneers of modernism and expressionism in Syria\, Moualla was the first of his peers to introduce interactive performance to his work; though he no longer incorporates performance\, the act and process of creating his works is a performance in itself – he’s known for his dramatic\, intensely theatrical large-scale canvasses. \n“Blurring the boundaries between fact and fiction\, consciousness and subconsciousness\, Moualla reflects on the ambiguities that are constantly in our minds and part of our daily lives” says the gallery. ” Calling for a reconsideration of socially rooted axioms\, specifically in Arab society and through the process of a war\, the artist intentionally poses questions ideas of power\, free-will\, and choices.” \nTo 13 April. \nAbove: Ahmad Moualla\, Untitled (2023) \n

SUMMARY:The Phantom of the Opera
DESCRIPTION:Continuing its policy of attracting established blue-chip touring performances\, Dubai Opera is running Broadway Entertainment Group’s production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s critically acclaimed musical for a three-week run. \nThe story is based on Gaston Leroux’s classic novel of a musical genius known only as ‘The Phantom’ who haunts the depths of the Paris Opera House in the 19th century. Mesmerised by the talent and beauty of the young soprano Christine\, the Phantom grooms her as his protégé – but that doesn’t go too well\, and his obsession sets the scene for a dramatic collision of jealousy\, madness and passion. \nThe show\, which celebrated 37 years last October\, has won over 70 major theatre awards – it’s Lloyd-Webber’s most successful – and reportedly has been seen by more than 160 million people worldwide; now it’s our turn … There are performances between 22 February and 10 March (not Mondays)\, with shows at 8pm on weekdays and 2pm and 8pm on Saturdays\, 2pm and 7.30pm on the Sundays. Tickets look a tad pricey\, but this is a lavish production with a big cast and a 2h45m run time that could well justify the cost. \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Sikka Art and Design Festival 2024
DESCRIPTION:The 12th edition of Sikka runs from 23 February to 3 March 2024 at the Al Shindagha Historic Neighbourhood (it’s moved from Al Fahidi to simplify access and increase the range and number of exhibits and event spaces – all part of sprucing up the festival and making it generally more Official). There’s a lot going on – lots of murals and outdoor installations\, lots of art and photography exhibitions\, live performances\, film screenings\, poetry evenings\, workshops\, “homegrown F&B concepts”\, and a programme of panel talks by our friends at Karama Arts Club. \nBut if you’d like to find out exactly what’s happening when and where\, don’t bother with the website at sikkartandesign.com – it seems to be inactive. There’s no Twitter/X or Facebook presence with the promised @sikkaplatform account. And Sikka’s Instagram is enthusiastic and busy but skimpy in terms of hard information. \nThat leaves the Dubai Culture page for the Sikka festival. It looks good but in fact it’s full of lorem ipsums and placeholder images\, which is frankly a bit shoddy. If you persevere with clicks on ‘Your Guide to Sikka 24’ you will get to a page from where you might think you can download the full programme … but no. You can in fact download a PDF for day one but the other links are all dead or barely sentient (try the ‘Sikka Houses’ page\, but prepare to be disappointed quite quickly). Don’t bother clicking on ‘Download the full programme here’\, or ‘Register’\, or ‘Download your Sikka map here’; they don’t go anywhere. (And the map lower down the page shows the old Al Fahidi location by default\, but at least you can drag it over to Al Shindagha.) \nSeveral events are capacity-limited\, though\, so registration will definitely be required for those. Since preregistration doesn’t seem to be available\, perhaps there’s an onsite facility for personal visitors. \nThe lack of information and the duff website are really disappointing. Sikka has always had a cool\, open-access\, let’s-do-it-here vibe\, and even if that’s being organised away the festival is bound to be a fun visit. Still\, it would be better if we knew some more about the timed events or those that do need prebooking. \nThe festival is free to enter. It’s open from 4pm and closes at midnight on weekends\, 11pm weekdays. Access is best via Metro (the Al Ghubaiba stop) or cab (book online with code SIKKA50 to get your Hala Taxi trip at half price).

SUMMARY:Mandy El-Sayegh : A rose is a rose is a rose is a rose
DESCRIPTION:The inaugural solo exhibition at Lawrie Shabibi for London-based artist Mandy El-Sayegh is a combination of painting\, installation\, video\, sound\, and performance that showcases her characteristic ‘bricolage’ approach\, connecting disparate visual cultural knowledge to create new meanings. \nSays the gallery: “El-Sayegh rebels against and liberates images and text from centralised commodification structures\, exploring a fusion of various actions\, creating an immersive audio-visual experience that weaves together ancestral\, familial\, and collective visual data from diverse sources such as ephemera\, textiles\, literature\, newspapers\, and printed materials …” \nAs part of the project\, sound artist Sami El-Enany has been commissioned to craft a spatialised\, multi-channel sound work in response to the themes explored in El-Sayegh’s art. \nThe exhibition is curated by Sara Raza. \nTo 28 March. \nAbove: Mandy El-Sayegh\,
Deeds for the dead (2023) \n

SUMMARY:Listening for Traces: Conflict\, Sound & Memory
DESCRIPTION:The brand new Rizq Art Initiative in Abu Dhabi continues to impress. Its second exhibition is an experimental examination of the enduring impact of conflict on people\, places\, language\, and relationships through the medium of sound; it’s curated by Cathy Lane\, Professor of Sound Arts at University of the Arts London\, and includes works from some of the world’s most notable sound artists (among them Cathy Lane herself). \n“Their diverse work reflects the cyclical nature of conflict\, the wounds of history and the potent feedback loop that continues to exert influence on today’s world”\, says the gallery; this should be a really interesting and potentially eye- (ear?-) opening show. \nThe artists: \nAbdullah Al Othman (KSA)\nAsma Ghanem (Palestine)\nAlexia Webster (South Africa)\nCathy Lane (UK)\nChristopher Marianetti (USA)\nAngus Carlyle (UK)\nJananne Al Ani (UK / Iraq)\nLouise K Wilson (UK)\nMartin John Callanan (UK)\nNour Sokhon (Lebanon)\nOpen Group (Ukraine)\nShirin Neshat (Iran)\nThomas Gardner (UK)\nUzma Falak (India)\nYara Mekawei (Egypt)\nHasan Hujairi (Bahrain)\nLawrence Abu Hamdan (Jordan)\nMeena Vari (India)\nSafeya Alblooshi (UAE)\nShafeena Yusuff Ali (India)\nSyma Tariq (UK) \nDuring the four-week exhibition a series of programmes and curatorial walkthroughs dive deeper into the relationship between conflict and its portrayal in sound art. \nTo 20 March. \nAbove: Asma Ghanem / Christopher Marianetti / Alexia Webster: still from ‘Wall Piano’ (2018)

\n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:The Eternal Memory (La memoria infinita): dir Maite Alberdi (2023)
DESCRIPTION:This critically acclaimed Chilean documentary film follows the relationship of Chilean journalist Augusto Góngora\, one of Chile’s most prominent cultural journalists and TV presenters\, and actress Paulina Urrutia (who served as Minister of Culture and the Arts of the country from 2006 to 2010). They have been a couple for 23 years; eight years ago\, Augusto was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease\, and since then\, Paulina has been caring for him. Today\, it is up to him and his wife to maintain his identity despite the challenges of his illness … This is a moving\, loving portrait with absolutely no mawkishness about it. Recommended. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Les Petits Chanteurs à la Croix de Bois: Concert for Peace
DESCRIPTION:The famous French a cappella boys’ choir – made up of boys between 9 and 15 years old\, and for some reason styled in English as The Little Singers of Paris – is coming to the Sorbonne for a free concert. We have no idea about specifics of the programme\, though it apparently features songs in French\, Arabic and English “to spread a message of tolerance”. And the choir’s broad repertoire does include Darius Milhaud’s ‘Cantata of Peace’ which he wrote for the Little Singers in 1937. (Milhaud\, at the time probably France’s premier composer\, called the school “a miracle of faith\, tenacity\, enthusiasm and talent”).

SUMMARY:In Real Time
DESCRIPTION:NYU Abu Dhabi Art Gallery is celebrating its ten-year anniversary with a characteristically interesting exhibition. In Real Time is a dynamic show – over the course of three months the curators will be adding artists\, and the artists and performers will add work. So far the roster includes some impressive names. Gallery (and magpie) favourites Ramin Haerizadeh\, Rokni Haerizadeh and Hesam Rahmanian are joined by Chafa Ghaddar\, Rana Begum\, Haleh Redjaian\, Moza Almatrooshi\, Gözde Ilkin and Cristiana de Marchi. \nThe prime mover is of course the Gallery’s Executive Director Maya Allison\, who has a ‘letter of intent’ that asks some pertinent questions: “What do we need from a space for art in this particular moment\, in this particular part of the world\, in the UAE\, in a university\, in an academic gallery?” Her intention is that the artists\, the visitors and the art gallery team essentially devise some answers\, or at least some opinions – “I hope this exhibition allows for any number of responses” concludes Maya Allison. \nThe contribution from the artists is obvious – they can make and remake art\, amending their presence over the course of the show. Some artworks start with no more than a statement of intent; some artists may just leave hints of a presence (“the artist was here\, and may be back”). Maybe there will be some works that last only one day. And the roster may expand during the show: “the artist list will grow\, if and when it seems right”. \nMuch the same applies to the gallery team\, particularly the curators: they can add more artists\, reconfigure the space\, expound and cajole. The principal curator is Duygu Demir\, quite recently arrived but carrying an impressive pedigree (and ad addressbook that has obviously contributed some of the participating artists). She’s expects to provide curatorial interventions\, maybe even collaborations. \nAs for the visitors\, their role may be more ephemeral: “this is an exhibition about visiting and revisiting\, about being physically present in the space\, with the traces left by artists who have been there\, or hints of those who will be there …” But in fact two of the works will be made entirely by the community\, and that could mean a contribution from you. \nWe like this idea. In Real Time shows at NYU Abu Dhabi Art Gallery to 9 June\, midday to 8pm (closed Mondays). Admission is free and open to all. \nAbove: From Parthenogenesis\, the Ramin Haerizadeh / Rokni Haerizadeh / Hesam Rahmanian show seen at NYUAD Art Gallery two years ago \n

SUMMARY:Through the Seasons with Eric Carle
DESCRIPTION:For the first time in the region\, the work of the noted illustrator and children’s book author (more than 70 titles to his name\, including of course The Very Hungry Caterpillar) is celebrated through Carle’s brilliant imagery of the seasons\, from hibernating bears in winter and hatching chicks in spring to colourful flowers in summer and ripe apple trees in the fall. Curated by Reem AlHashimi\, the show features original art – including Carle’s painted tissue-paper collages from nine classic picture books – as well as unpublished work. To 22 August.

SUMMARY:Hussein Sharif: Re-framing Reality
DESCRIPTION:The Culture Foundation’s big summer show is a major survey of four decades of work showcasing the multidisciplinary practice across painting\, drawing\, collage and sculpture of an artist acknoweldged as one of the UAE’s key postmodernists (he was one of the Five founders of contemporary art in the Emirates\, including his brother Hassan\, Abdullah Al Saadi\, Mohammed Kazem and Mohamed Ahmed Ibrahim). \nHussein Sharif worked with various mediums to respond to his surrounding environment and current realties and used recycled materials extensively as a way of processing the seismic changes of UAE society. This new show\, curated by Aysha Al Hemeiri and Zuhoor Al Sayegh\, features installations that encourage the audience to interact with the work. \nTo 1 September.

SUMMARY:Xposure International Photography Festival 2025
DESCRIPTION:The ninth edition of the region’s largest\, broadest and generally most impressive festival of photography. It is based around a the exhibitions\, solo and group\, but importantly incudes a very full programme of authoritative talks and useful workshops; portfolio reviews and focus group sessions; film screenings\, guided tours\, and book signings; an accompanying trade show; the Xposure Awards; the Xposure Market Area\, selling festival merchandise\, prints\, and accessories; and\, new for this year\, the Conservation Summit – “a dedicated platform for addressing critical environmental issues through the lens of visual storytelling” that brings together conservationists\, photographers\, and filmmakers to discuss and promote sustainability and environmental awareness. \nFor this year\, Xposure moves to the Aljada development near the airport and the universities. This would seem to be a much cooler\, more dynamic and creatively inspiring destination\, much more open and less form than the Expo Centre (and it helps that Ajjada’s developer ARADA is the festival’s official partner: “ARADA’s visionary development provides an elevated experience\, setting the stage for a transformative celebration of photography and the visual arts”\, says the press bumf). \n  \n  \n
