SUMMARY:Danú presents: The Dictator
DESCRIPTION:A second performance for this interpretation in English of a timely absurdist tale by the late Lebanese playwright Issam Mahfouz. Set in a claustrophobic  fictional world\, it tells the story of a tyrant (the General\, played by Aida Laubach) whose grandiose delusions include believing herself to be the saviour of all humanity. \nThe first half is close to slapstick comedy\, but after the interval it shifts gears to plummet into darkness and existential angst leading to a climactic ending. The play focuses on the General’s existence and power in tandem with her idiot-savant servant Saadoun (Carine Bouery). Saadoun\, however\,  proves to be quite the enigma with a fascinating rising and falling power dynamic between both as the play progresses. \nThe play has been described as an absurd masterpiece\, a minimalist mixture of Ionesco and Beckett\, a tale of delusion and depravity with fierce and hilarious jabs at despotism and existence. It’s usually cast with two men\, so women in the roles should add a neat twist … \nThe play is directed by Padraig Downey for Danú Theatre. It’s free\, but pre-registration is recommended since the first-come-first-served basis means a seat cannot be guaranteed …

SUMMARY:A Journey into Architecture Archives: Beirut\, Cairo\, Rabat
DESCRIPTION:A Sharjah Architecture Triennial exhibition\, curated by architect George Arbid\, that highlights three institutions in the Arab world that hold and preserve key regional architecture archives – the Arab Center for Architecture (ACA) in Beirut (co-founded by Arbid)\, the Rare Books and Special Collections at the American University in Cairo (AUC)\, and Archives du Maroc in Rabat. \nAs well as with preserving the memory of completed buildings\, the archives also have stories of designs that never came to fruition– and a highlight of the exhibition is a focus on five abandoned projects\, brought to life through drawings and models. Also on view: three documentaries commissioned specifically for the exhibition and filmed in Beirut\, Cairo\, Rabat and Casablanca. \nThe exhibition opens with a panel discussion (4-6pm) with guest speakers Amel Chabbi\, Zahra Ali Baba and Suha Hasan\, moderated by George Arbid; he’ll then lead a tour of the exhibition. \nAll Sharjah Architecture Triennial events are free and open to the public but capacity is limited and advance registration is required.

SUMMARY:Sooshi Mango: Off the Boat in Dubai
DESCRIPTION:The long-established Australian comedy troupe (two brothers\, and their best mate) comes loaded with classic comedy references – the likes of Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis\, the Marx Brothers Laurel and Hardy – and an act that is usually rooted in their ethnic (Italian and Greek ) heritage\, with a dash of the pointed satire about racial prejudice and modern-day social mechanisms in Australia. There’s a podcast and a feature film coming\, apparently\, but in the meantime we have the live show: expect slick\, effective\, well-timed comedy. This show opens the Dubai Comedy Festival. Recommended. \n

SUMMARY:Chaillot – Théâtre national de la Danse / Rachid Ouramdane: Corps extrêmes
DESCRIPTION:It’s not often that a dance piece involves a climbing wall on the stage. But then it’s not often you’ll come across a dance piece that tests the ensemble’s physical strength\, emotional barriers\, and trust in each other in quite this way. Choreographer Rachid Ouramdane has produced an ambitious\, captivating work about confronting danger\, mastering the self\, the beauty of flight and the desire to escape the chains of gravity; acrobats\, rock climbers\, flyers\, slackliners and dancers come together in a visually stunning exploration of flight and freedom that features stunning video projections of remarkable natural landscapes alongside graceful yet spectacular physicality. \n‘Extreme bodies’ indeed. It’s just extraordinary\, and we recommend it highly. There’s a second performance on 13 May too. \nThe production is supported by Dance Reflections by Van Cleef & Arpels.

SUMMARY:Fridge Concert Series 40: Oxygen Trio by Tarek Skaikar / Imbue
DESCRIPTION:For the 40th Fridge Concert Series\, the Fridge’s people have paired new acts with alumni of past concert series for one-off guest collaborations – “merging voices\, genres and artistic styles to create memorable music moments”. This gig celebrates International Jazz Day\, apparently\, though they’re a bit late (it was 30 April). Oxygen Trio by Tarek Skaikar is an established jazz combo with some cool contemporary tunes and flamenco influences; joining the Trio on stage will be Imbue from season 20\, another combo worth seeking out – a four-piece that somehow mixes bossa nova\, straight ahead jazz and Arabic melodies. Should be good.

DESCRIPTION:For the 40th Fridge Concert Series\, the Fridge’s people have paired new acts with alumni of past concert series for one-off guest collaborations – “merging voices\, genres and artistic styles to create memorable music moments”. Karman Line\, who will be debuting tunes from their first album\, play a kind of 70s-style heavy rock; that should make for an interesting mix with the dream pop and shoegaze of Filipino duo WYWY from season 27.

SUMMARY:Sophiya Khwaja: Nooks of Power
DESCRIPTION:This solo exhibition – her first in the UAE – marks the completion of Sophiya’s journey on the Tashkeel Critical Practice Programme\, mentored by Salima Hashmi and Dawn Ross. Nooks of Power aims to investigate the ways in which humans acquire\, hoard and unleash authoritative power\, with Sophiya dissecting herself as ‘Specimen No.1’. \n\n\n\n\nDivided into five distinct series\, the works are all executed on paper using techniques from pastels to digital prints\, employing acrylics\, thread\, collage\, tea-wash and gouache. These stories depict scenarios that were playing in Sophiya’s mind while creating the work in her studio. \nTo 19 June.
