SUMMARY:Katia Al Tal: Appearance
DESCRIPTION:A solo show for the abstract sculptures of the Jordanian-French artist. Appearance explores the intrinsic essence of the artist’s vision and the experiences which led to the creation of these vessels – “a culmination of time specks that are made tangible in the velvety texture of pearly white silhouettes”. SUMMARY:Fridge Concert Series 40: Oxygen Trio by Tarek Skaikar / Imbue
DESCRIPTION:For the 40th Fridge Concert Series\, the Fridge’s people have paired new acts with alumni of past concert series for one-off guest collaborations – “merging voices\, genres and artistic styles to create memorable music moments”. This gig celebrates International Jazz Day\, apparently\, though they’re a bit late (it was 30 April). Oxygen Trio by Tarek Skaikar is an established jazz combo with some cool contemporary tunes and flamenco influences; joining the Trio on stage will be Imbue from season 20\, another combo worth seeking out – a four-piece that somehow mixes bossa nova\, straight ahead jazz and Arabic melodies. Should be good.

SUMMARY:Fridge Concert Series 40: Karman Line / WYWY
DESCRIPTION:For the 40th Fridge Concert Series\, the Fridge’s people have paired new acts with alumni of past concert series for one-off guest collaborations – “merging voices\, genres and artistic styles to create memorable music moments”. Karman Line\, who will be debuting tunes from their first album\, play a kind of 70s-style heavy rock; that should make for an interesting mix with the dream pop and shoegaze of Filipino duo WYWY from season 27.

SUMMARY:Sophiya Khwaja: Nooks of Power
DESCRIPTION:This solo exhibition – her first in the UAE – marks the completion of Sophiya’s journey on the Tashkeel Critical Practice Programme\, mentored by Salima Hashmi and Dawn Ross. Nooks of Power aims to investigate the ways in which humans acquire\, hoard and unleash authoritative power\, with Sophiya dissecting herself as ‘Specimen No.1’. \n\n\n\n\nDivided into five distinct series\, the works are all executed on paper using techniques from pastels to digital prints\, employing acrylics\, thread\, collage\, tea-wash and gouache. Each series is accompanied by a short explanatory text by the artist presented on the adjacent wall or incorporated within the work. These stories depict scenarios that were playing in Sophiya’s mind while creating the work in her studio. \nTo 19 June. The artist will also lead guided tours of the exhibition at 11am and 1pm on 14 May\, and she will be in conversation 6.30-7.30pm on 17 May. \nAbove: Sophiya Khwaja\, Nose Series\, WhoKnows (2022)

SUMMARY:The Jazz Garden: Denise King
DESCRIPTION:Ms King is “an expressive\, big-voiced singer who combines jazz with elements of R&B\, blues and gospel” as her blurb puts it. She does sing rather well – she’s from Philadelphia\, which probably helps\, and she’s been on the circuit for a while. She does the standards\, but she’s particularly good at jazzy interpretations of rock and soul hits. \nDoors open at 7pm\, King is on at 9pm with the Alexey Cheremizov Jazz Quartet\, and the evening winds up around 1am. The price buys you a stool and you have to queue for your drinks; pay more\, and you can get served at a shared barrel\, a table\, or the VIP lounge.

SUMMARY:Jameel Arts Centre Youth Takeover
DESCRIPTION:The annual Jameel Arts Centre Youth Takeover – a physical takeover of the Jameel’s spaces by the eight members of The Assembly 2022-2023 – features multiple audiovisual and artwork interventions around the stairs\, passageways and galleries 9 and 10. \nThe Assembly is an annual talent development programme designed to support young artistic leadership in the UAE. Each year\, eight creatives aged 18-24 are selected for a programme that focusses on curatorial practices as a learning exercise\, responding to ongoing discourse while accessing Art Jameel’s network and opportunities. This year’s was designed\, curated and facilitated by Shama Nair\, independent curator\, researcher\, cultural projects manager and an alumnus of the 2021-22 Assembly. \nThe theme of this year’s takeover is composite\, asking “what makes us?”. The principal exhibition\, eight original commissions from young artists\, proposes that the self holds multiple sources and components; “the artworks herein\, compositions in their own right\, exist in dense and relational dialogue. Their layers stack up over time\, like the Earth’s stratas of rock\, compressed over millions of years. In coming together\, these composite voices meld and negotiate substances\, placements\, gain new meaning and condense into a shared form of immensity …” \nThe commissioned artists\, including some Assembly members and young UAE-based artists\, are: \n\nAbdallah El Abora with Dima Abou Zannad\nAlla Abdunabi\nAssi Abogado with Nathaniel Enriquez\nAuguste Nomeikaite\nBilal Bashir with Ali Khaleel\nJoetto with Mariam Haddad\nKarno Dasgupta\nRaghe Farah\n\nThe 2023 Youth Takeover commissions are presented in conjunction with artwork loans from the Art Jameel Collection. The 2023 Takeover also features “public programmes that offer visitors space to nurture and explore their own composite self” — details to follow (check the website). \nThe Assembly 2022-2023 cohort members are artist Hala El Abora\, artist and architect Farah Ali\, visual artist Bilal Bashir\, interdisciplinary researcher and artist Karno Dasgupta\, artist Ronald Ekore\, multidisciplinary artist Nathaniel Enriquez\, photographer\, filmmaker and writer Auguste Nomeikaite\, and visual designer Saba Sayfaiee. \nTo 28 May.

SUMMARY:Georgii Uvs: The Wings
DESCRIPTION:The regional debut for the UK-based abstract expressionist\, curated by Ellen Nash. He says his art can be seen as people’s perception of the material and psychological worlds and their desire to understand the universe through increasing self-awareness; “Uvs’ works of art are not intended to display objects or specific feelings\, they urge viewers to delve into themselves and reach deep within the subconscious\, uncovering primitive sensations and revealing the collective sense of the archetypal visual language”. Characteristic of his style right now is use of UV-sensitive pigments\, such that his painting change when lit by UV … \nTo 24 May. \nAbove: Georgii Uvs\, Wings #24 (and below\, with UV)

SUMMARY:Coded Gestures
DESCRIPTION:A new Dubai gallery space  opens with this group show for five conceptual artists\, curated by Nadine Khalil: Fatma Al Ali\, Mona Ayyash and Khalid Jauffer from the UAE plus Alexander Ugay (Kazakhstan) and Minja Gu (South Korea). The theme is the creative gesture as “a means of invisible labor\, exploring it as a source of repetitive vocabularies\, ultimately becoming a compelling way to look at the disciplining of bodies and forms … The exhibition connects the idea of psychological absence with the presence and absence of the body in performance\, ultimately questioning the core notion of labor itself”. \nThe exhibition opens with a live performance of Minja Gu’s House Tea de la Maison de la Casa (2023) a tea ceremony in which the artist invites all viewers to hundreds of tea infusions\, invoking the role of participatory exchange. It is presented alongside the documentation of a recent site-specific act of tea-making the artist performed in the UAE with the local community\, commissioned by the gallery. \nAlexander Ugay tackles social alienation through imaginaries and archives via the video More than a Hundred Thousand Times (2019-20 – Korean labor migrants in post-Soviet states) and AI-generated imagery of the Korean diaspora (Unknown Return\, 2023). \nFatma Al Ali’s installation of stacked bricks\, My mother told me not to collect bricks (2020) reveals disparities and the embedded relationship between individual and collective systems. Khalid’s piece\, my job is to look at the sunset (2023)\, is an incessant documentation of daily sunsets printed in real time and mounted in the gallery throughout the 44 days of the exhibition. \nTwo other takes on repetition are presented with Minja Gu’s 11-hour documentation of her version of a marathon done in two days in 42.195 (2006) and Mona Ayyash’s pixelated video\, Trampoline (2015) featuring athletes jumping repetitively. \nTo 16 July. \nAbove: Mona Ayyash\, Trampoline (2015). SUMMARY:Library Circles: Another Empty House
DESCRIPTION:For the Fall iteration of Library Circles\, the jameel’s series of research\, talks and experimental interventions by UAE practitioners that explores alternative research methodologies and representations\, Jameel Library presents a display by Another Empty House. This collaborative research-based project by Juneida Abdul Jabber\, Shahnaz Hashim\, and Zahra Mansoor was established in 2020 to focus on the contemporary Gulf/Malayali experience. \nTheir research delves into economic\, patriarchal\, and capitalist behaviours that have contributed to a rise in vacant domestic houses in Kerala. It has included collecting and mapping tropes in film\, advertising\, YouTube videos\, and oral histories to create a nuanced understanding of this issue. Another Empty House aims to document and map urban networks\, exploring transience\, social class\, aspirations\, gender\, and space\, and the effects of this socio-economic and political issue. \nTo 30 October.

SUMMARY:Tsuyoshi Hisakado: Polite Existence
DESCRIPTION:Now we think this could be one of the highlights of the art year locally: it will be Tsuyoshi Hisakado’s first exhibition in the region (he shows mainly in his native Japan and the Pacific Rim\, with a foray to the 2019 Venice Biennale as well). The show features a wide body of work using a variety of techniques and materials – among them sound\, light\, sculpture\, drawing\, and large-scale immersive installations. \nAs the Jameel puts it\, “Hisakado’s multi-form practice questions the order of space\, time\, and other natural forces that inform and shape our everyday lives …” His practice also focuses on the seemingly mundane aspects of everyday life\, and his work often highlights subtle\, fleeting experiences. They can be delicate\, forceful\, thoughtful\, and sometimes all three; you could stand for a long time before his ongoing crossfades series of works on paper that feature a spiral of minute numbers derived from the mathematical constant pi – surely an allusion to infinity\, with subtle distortions caused by random splashes of ink. It’s a kind of visual poetry. \nYes\, we’re impressed by Hisakado and looking forward to this show. Polite Existence is curated by Anna Bernice delos Reyes and Yu Iseki following a curatorial exchange between Japan and the UAE in 2022; the exhibition is produced by Art Jameel in collaboration with the Japan Foundation and coincides with the 50th Anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the United Arab Emirates and Japan. \nTo 24 September.

DESCRIPTION:The Noise Next Door (Matt Grant\, Tom Livingstone\, Sam Pacelli and Robin Hatcher) is probably the UK’s best comedy improv team; they have been performing together since their uni days and the CV now includes 12 Edinburgh fringe gigs\, a heap of TV appearances\, and a loyal following for their lightning-quick wit and instant reaction to audience suggestions. The reviews are great\, too: “hilarious … a superior kind of chaos” opined the Telegraph\, “comedy gold … staggeringly well executed’ said the Guardian. Recommended.

SUMMARY:The Noise Next Door: Whose Line is it?
DESCRIPTION:Laughter Factory gigs can be a bit hit or miss\, but this one is almost guaranteed to be good. The Noise Next Door (Matt Grant\, Tom Livingstone\, Sam Pacelli and Robin Hatcher) is probably the UK’s best comedy improv team; they have been performing together since their uni days and the CV now includes 12 Edinburgh fringe gigs\, a heap of TV appearances\, and a loyal following for their lightning-quick wit and instant reaction to audience suggestions. The reviews are great\, too: “hilarious … a superior kind of chaos” opined the Telegraph\, “comedy gold … staggeringly well executed’ said the Guardian. Recommended. \nThey move to Abu Dhabi for another show tomorrow.
