SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Ludmilla Radchenko: Wings of Power
DESCRIPTION:Works resulting from a year of profound transformation initiated by the artist’s journey to Nepal\, “where inner awareness and self-observation became central to her practice”. Radchenko’s visual language combines painting\, collage\, symbolism\, and layered cultural references\, creating compositions that are bold\, ironic\, and emotionally charged. Recurring animal figures embody the Seven Deadly Sins — not as moral judgment\, but as raw human forces: instinct\, desire\, fear\, excess\, anger\, pride\, and inertia. Opposing them are the Wings\, symbols of awareness\, elevation\, and transformation.

SUMMARY:Wednesday Night Impro: Maestro
DESCRIPTION:The Courtyard’s popular evening of elimination improv. Ten actors converge for a night of scenes\, songs and games based on audience suggestions. After each round you score the players on a scale of 1 to 5\, and the one with the lowest score is knocked out. Eventually only one remains\, to be crowned the Maestro. “Fast-paced\, unpredictable\, and hilarious” says the promo\, and you couldn’t argue with that. As with all Courtyard improv evenings it’s free\, but you need to put your name on the guestlist (via the website); and it’s first-come first-served\, so get there early to grab a seat. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:UAENO: Echoes of Time – Ibn Arabi
DESCRIPTION:The UAE National Orchestra continues its inaugural season with a concert inspired by the words of Ibn Arabi\, the Arab scholar\, Sufi mystic\, poet\, and Muslim philosopher from 12th and 13th century al-Andalus. This is the world premiere of a symphonic poem by Nadim Tarabay\, the composer who was also commissioned for the UAENO’s symphony The Beginning. \nIbn Arabi’s major teachings emphasize the concept of unity of existence (wahdat al-wujud)\, the idea that all beings are interconnected manifestations of the same divine reality\, encouraging a deep understanding of the self and God through love and spiritual discovery; Echoes of Time seeks a musical response to these ideas\, where the music becomes reflection and connection with Arabic and Western instruments plus voices “invite the audience to experience time as emotion\, where silence and melody carry meaning”.

SUMMARY:PowerPointless Networking Night
DESCRIPTION:Back for a new season\, it’s one of the most consistently funny of the Courtyard’s classic improv gigs: the speakers have to give a presentation on a slide deck they’ve never seen before\, with the topic determined at random by the Wheel of Destiny. Each presentation will be rated by a panel of judges and the winner applauded as the PowerPointless champion. Afterwards there’s a chance to mingle with the presenters and the Courtyard’s Corporate Team (and a chance to find out more about the Courtyard’s Corporate Academy). \nIt’s free\, but you need to put your name on the guestlist via the website. It’s first-come first-served\, so get there early to grab a seat. \n

SUMMARY:The Reading Village: February
DESCRIPTION:February’s Reading Village selection is a beefy one – Kiran Desai’s The Loneliness of Sonia and Sunny\, described by the organisers as “sprawling\, layered\, and unapologetically thick” and shortlisted for the 2025 Booker Prize.  Meet at the excellent Batliwala & Co “for an evening of big thoughts\, shared pages\, and honest reactions over food and drinks”. \nThe Reading Village format is basic: one book a month chosen by poll\, and a free-to-attend gathering. SUMMARY:Dubai Bibliophiles: Andy Clark\, The Experience Machine
DESCRIPTION:Anyone who has read Clark’s sweeping but very accessible vision of cognitive science is free to join this Dubai Bibliophiles Book Club meetup. It’s a great choice: the key takeaway – experience itself is a kind of controlled hallucination because our mind is constantly making and refining predictions about what we expect to see. There’s plenty to talk about there …

SUMMARY:POSTPONED Ramadaniyyat: Naïssam Jalal and Hazem Shaheen
DESCRIPTION:Flutist and vocalist Naïssam Jalal and oud master Hazem Shaheen have been friends and collaborators for nearly 20 years\, composing and performing an intimate\, meditative repertoire that uses just their two instruments and brings together the classical Arabic tradition of improvised taqsim and modern jazz. \nBorn in Paris to Syrian parents\, Naïssam Jalal is one of the leading figures on the contemporary jazz scene – the leader of four groups\, a prolific composer\, and with 10 albums to her name (including one with a very cool track featuring Archie Shepp). In 2024\, Jalal was named best French flutist by Jazz Magazine. \nHazem Shaheen is an Egyptian oud player\, singer\, and composer. He studied at the Bait Al Oud and subsequently taught there before moving on to Cairo Opera House. He has albums with his band Eskenderella and as a solo performer. \nJalal and Hazem Shaheen have done many concerts together but only one album (Liqaa\, in 2018: it’s very fine). This concert for Ramadan should provide a magical opportunity to experience them and their very distinctive music. \n

SUMMARY:POSTPONED Mouteea Murad: Exodus Through the Maze – Disorientation as Fate
DESCRIPTION:“Disorientation does not begin with the wandering mind\, but with an excess of questioning\,” says the gallery in introducing this exhibition of the Syria-born Sharjah-based artist’s most recent body of work. “In this context\, art is not considered a linear path or a complete narrative\, but rather a constantly shifting one –moving between memory\, origin\, and transformation.” \nIn Exodus through the Maze\, Murad explores art as a practice influenced by existing visuals – “derived from everyday imagery and experiences\, as well as the ongoing development of past visual languages”. The collages on display reference elements of modern and contemporary art within a new visual framework that opens the image to reinterpretation. \nTo 10 April. \nAbove: Mouteea Murad\, Trial No. 173 – The Fate of the Red Exodus I (2024)

SUMMARY:Nihad Al Turk: Creatures of Hope
DESCRIPTION:Without formal art schooling\, Nihad Al Turk has developed a distinctive visual language that blends colours\, forms\, and patterns\, “preserving his naïve sensibility while conveying his philosophical outlook and artistic vision”. His paintings typically feature anthropomorphic shapes and figures\, a form of self-portraiture that reflects Al Turk’s view on humanity and his connection with the world – “these haunting\, creature-like beings represent the complexity of our human ecosystem”. \nTo 9 May. \nAbove: Nihad Al-Turk\, Heroism (2014)

SUMMARY:POSTPONED The Voice of Hind Rajab: dir Kaouther Ben Hania (2025)
DESCRIPTION:Tunisian director Kaouther Ben Hania has created a docudrama that reconstructs the horrifying true story of five-year-old Hind Rajab as she is bombarded by the Israeli army in Gaza in 2024. Rajab survived the original assault by the IDF\, which killed six family members and two paramedics\, and she stayed on the phone for hours to the Palestine Red Crescent Society desperately begging for help. Rajab’s heart-wrenching voice is real; the film fictionally reconstructing the drama of the emergency responders in their call centre office. \nThis is a powerful film\, greeted with a 23-minute standing ovation when shown at the Venice Film Festival last autumn. It also begs a few questions about whether the mix of fiction and fact is at all exploitative; but you can make your own minds up about that … Very highly recommended\, \nIt is presented here by the NYUAD Film and New Media Program and screening as part of the CinemaNA series of contemporary Arab cinema.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Huma Shoaib: Fractal
DESCRIPTION:Huma Shoaib has always been an interesting\, thoughtful artist\, creating patterns from sacred geometry and looking for analogies in life and nature. She often uses paper cut silhouettes layered with detailed graphite drawings that typically adds three-dimensional depth to otherwise flat imagery. \nAccording to the gallery\, this new show is “an exhibition that explores chaos as fractal paradox; where perfect\, infinite patterns of existence\, spirituality and free will will repeat across scales\, blurring the line between divine order and self-destructive conflict …” Significantly influenced by sufi ideologies\, Huma Shoaib’s work tries to break down this chaos into simple fractal structures that speak of order\, perfection\, the divine.
