SUMMARY:Fly\, Your Fools!
DESCRIPTION:An irreverent high-energy high-physicality parody of Lord of the Rings (the film rather than the novel\, in fact). Intricate Foley work is matched by the sheer skill of the actors and the increasingly manic complexity of the situations – the Mines of Moria\, a gloriously OTT death for Boromir\, and four hobbits being played by three people are standout moments\, but there are many … (Why ‘Fly\, You Fools’? It’s what Gandalf said to the company just as the Balrog dragged him down. He didn’t mean flap your wings\, obvs – it was ‘fly’ in the sense of ‘flee’.) \nThere’s a second performance tomorrow (25 January) at 3pm. \nThis is one of three fringe-adjacent shows at the Junction today\, playing along with La Lezione di Teatro | The Acting Class and Hold on to Your Butts as part of Quoz Arts Fest – so you’ll have to buy a ticket to get into the festival (one day pass AED 100\, two-day pass AED 200) as well as a ticket for the show. And the AED 120 price below is for a single performance; you can buy a two-show one-day pass for AED 199 and a three-show one-day pass for AED 299.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Mamluks: Legacy of an Empire
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition on the rich heritage of the Mamluk Sultanate\, a dynasty that ruled a vast expanse of territory encompassing the most significant Islamic holy sites for more than 250 years (1250–1517)\, with more than 270 works  gatheredfrom 34 museums and cultural institutions in 13 countries – including objects of art\, glasswork\, metalwork\, ceramics\, textiles\, coinage\, manuscripts and more. Manuel Rabaté\, the Louvre Abu Dhabi’s director\, emphased the international nature of the Mamluk empire: “This exhibition delves into the interactions of the Mamluk Sultanate with Asia\, Africa and Europe\, revealing how interconnected the world was at that time\, and how remarkably aligned in spirit it was with the cosmopolitan nature of contemporary Abu Dhabi”. \nFirst shown at the Musée du Louvre as the first major European showcase dedicated to the Mamluk Sultanate\, this edition of Mamluks: Legacy of an Empire is curated by Dr. Souraya Noujaim\, Director of the Department of Islamic Art at Musée du Louvre (General Curator)\, and Dr. Carine Juvin\, Curator for the Medieval Near East Collection\, Department of Islamic Art\, at Musée du Louvre (Scientific Curator)\, with the support of Fakhera Alkindi\, Senior Curatorial Assistant at Louvre Abu Dhabi.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Nja Mahdaoui: the Choreographer of Letters
DESCRIPTION:This focused retrospective surveys over six decades of practice by the Tunisian multimedia artist Nja Mahdaoui\, an influential figures in Arab modern art who repurposed Arabic calligraphy into a visual and abstract contemporary art form. This show\, o-curated by Michaela Watrelot\, head curator and director of exhibitions at Bassam Freiha Art Foundation\, and the artist’s daughter Molka Mahdaoui\, bridges tradition and modernity to signify notions of identity and heritage.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Al Burda Exhibition: The Shape of Meaning
DESCRIPTION:In response to the Nja Mahdaoui retrospective in the main gallery at BFAF\, this exhibition presents loans from the Ministry of Culture’s Al Burda exhibitions from 2008 to 2023. Al Burda was/is an annual exhibition where contemporary artists engage with the cultural and semantic power of the written word while experimenting with form and medium; this exhibition provides a dialogue between calligraphy as abstract form and as linguistic tradition\, showing how artists today both inherit and reinvent tradition.

SUMMARY:Karn:Warrior
DESCRIPTION:Now this sounds like a lot of fun – an immersive hi-tech retelling of the story of the Mahabharata epic hero Karn. Raised in a humble village\, unaware of his noble birth\, a stable boy among princes\, Karn’s journey leads to the legendary Kurukshetra War\, where Krishna reveals his true origins and Karn must face his sworn enemy Arjun … \nThis production is described as “like stepping inside a video game”. Karn:Warrior is produced by ANT Management with a raft of Dubai theatre notables – direction by Alex Broun\, fight routines choreographed by Narsimha “Nattu” Chouhan\, movement by Gillian Rhodes (who also stars)\, stunning big-screen LED visuals by Montel Goodrick Maiava\, music by Daniel Faber (who we think is responsible for Male Fireworks\, a track on magpie’s go-to playlist\, and who certainly is one of the people behind the Rair oxygen-and-water enterprise) … \nAlex Broun described the show to us as “a uniquely modern take on the story”. It’s not just the video game setting: “most of the main characters in the Mahabharata are male\, but we have cast three exceptional female actors to play all the roles. This brings a very different take on these legendary stories\, highlighting moments and ideas that are often glossed over in other versions …” We’re promised that “Karn:Warrior is fast moving\, explosive and highly entertaining 60 minutes – it will literally be leaping off the QE2 stage. One you definitely shouldn’t miss.” \nThere are multiple characters but just three actors. Newcomer Anita Nayyar plays Karn; Rochelle Goodrick is Arjun\, Karn’s arch enemy\, and takes other roles including Duroydhan\, his benefactor; Gillian Rhodes plays more than 10 different parts ranging from an eight-year-old girl to an 80-year-old guru. \nIt plays for one day only\, with shows at 2pm and 7pm.

SUMMARY:La Lezione di Teatro | The Acting Class
DESCRIPTION:The second performance for this joyful lesson in how theatre can transcend language barriers. An actress receives a student for a private drama lesson in her apartment; he is eager to learn the tricks of the trade\, she is thrilled at the idea of making him fall in love with Italian theatre. The lesson falters on language problems\, and communication breaks down until the universal language of commedia dell’arte comes to the rescue … \nThis is one of three fringe-adjacent shows at the Junction today\, playing along with Hold on to Your Butts and Fly\, You Fools! as part of Quoz Arts Fest – so you’ll have to buy a ticket to get into the festival (one day pass AED 100\, two-day pass AED 200) as well as a ticket for the show. SUMMARY:Hold On To Your Butts
DESCRIPTION:The second performance for this affectionate high-energy shot-for-shot parody of the iconic 90s film Jurassic Park\, with two blokes and a Foley artist delivering all the key characters (including most of the dinosaurs). SUMMARY:Museums\, Social Media\, and Public Space
DESCRIPTION:This NYUAD Institute talk considers how artworks operate across different contexts\, from museums and galleries to public spaces and digital circulation. Drawing on over 15 years of experience\, Bahia Shehab reflects on how audience engagement shifts when art is encountered within institutional settings versus when it is publicly displayed and exposed to everyday life. Through examples from projects in cities such as New York\, Istanbul\, Marrakesh\, and Hawaii\, the talk looks at how art travels\, remains relevant across geographies\, and is shaped by social media. \nThe speaker is a practising artist and a professor of practice in design (and founder of the graphic design programme) at The American University in Cairo\, where she developed a full design curriculum mainly focused on the visual culture of the Arab world.

SUMMARY:Darvish: Enrapture
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition is described by the gallery as “a visual dialogue\, suspended between Occidental heritage and Oriental sensibilities” and “rooted in the belief that love is a direct conduit to the Divine – a state that dissolves societal constructs and expectations\, dismantling the walls they build between our true nature and the infinite …”\nDarvish acts as the living thread that ties the paintings together\, his presence an unfolding rhythm that draws the room into a single\, shared frequency. “The work represents a quiet refusal to be shaped or subdued by worldly constructs. Turning away from the discordant noise of the mundane\, the artist aligns instead with a primordial pulse – a deep\, indwelling frequency that guides the spirit into a state of heightened clarity …” \nAbove: Darvish\, Fly-By (2026)

SUMMARY:Ayad Alkadhi: Sunken Republic
DESCRIPTION:Based in New York\, Alkadhi has academic degrees in art\, engineering\, and design – and as a result brings a multidisciplinary approach to a practice that engages with the cultural and political realities of global and Middle Eastern events. \nThis exhibition reflecting the turbulence of political conflict\, social unrest\, and survival. Figures twist and merge\, anatomical precision is disrupted by drips\, neon bursts\, and dissolving edges\, battle scenes or fever dreams are evoked\, echoes of historical grandeur meet ghostly overlays and street art grit … The result\, as the gallery puts it\, is “a diasporic\, hybrid language that defies categorisation”. \nAbove: Ayad Alkadhi The Four Horsemen (2025)

SUMMARY:Bahar Sabzevari: Ancestral Algorithms
DESCRIPTION:Rooted in Indo-Persian mythology\, Ancestral Algorithms feature a series of drawings\, paintings\, and sculptural works that merge organic and mechanical forms to reimagine the legendary Talking Tree (Derakht-e Sokhangoo) – a mythical being that could speak\, listen\, and connect the human\, animal\, and spiritual realms. Sabzevari reinterprets this ancient symbol through the lens of our technological era\, where the voice of nature evolves into the digital consciousness of AI. Says the artist: “the project explores how storytelling and communication evolve across time — from myth and magic to code and machine learning — revealing that our longing for connection remains constant. The Talking Tree becomes a hybrid network of memory\, where plants\, animals\, humans\, and machines coexist in an ever-expanding conversation …” \nAbove: Bahar Sabzevari\, Party (crown series) (2019)

SUMMARY:Biographies of a Cairo Neighbourhood: Khaled Adham
DESCRIPTION:Architect and author Khaled Adham traces the personal and familial impulses that have shaped the Mohandiseen district in Cairo. His research focuses on how late capitalism shaped Cairo’s urban and physical transformations\, with particular attention to housing and urbanisation of the middle-class in areas like Mohandiseen. \nThis is a public event associated with the Jameel’s Night School 2026\, an intensive five-week seminar programme (which itself is now fully subscribed).

SUMMARY:Tamaas Festival – Yasmine Hamdan | Al-Qasar | Maruja Limón
DESCRIPTION:The Arts Center’s mini-Womad for artists who mix modern/Western ideas with traditional/regional styles returns with three good-looking acts (each of whom will play for about an hour\, which makes the door price a bit of a bargain). \nYasmine Hamdan (above) is Arabic-indie royalty: she’s been music since the late 1990s\, earning international acclaim as a solo singer-songwriter\, producer\, and composer; her apparently effortless merging of elements from a variety of sources from pan-Arabic pop and poetry to clubby electronica via soul and West Coast guitar is seen to good effect on the rather good album she released last September. \nAl-Qasar was started between Los Angeles and Paris in 2016 by US-French producer Thomas Attar and now has a core of Turkish psychedelic rock singer Sibel\, Iraqi-French drummer Adrien Al-Aiedy and French bassist Guillaume Theoden. It’s clever rock ‘n’ roll\, mainly guitar-led with propulsive drumming and more than a touch of North African trance (no obvious drum machines\, though). 2024’s album Uncovered\, their second\, is full of good things and loads of variety\, which bodes well for the live show … \nMaruja Limón is a six-piece band from Barcelona with a fusion of flamenco\, pop\, and Latin. Te como la cara is the band’s latest album\, released a year ago; you’ll recognise flamenco\, salsa and rumba\, but also electronica and pop. It’s fast\, super-rhythmic\, good fun and very danceable. (Incidentally the album title translates literally as ‘I eat your face’ which my Catalan friend tells me is slang for ‘I really\, really like you’.) \nTickets are reportedly selling fast … \nRead our full-length backgrounder on the Tamaas Festival here.

SUMMARY:Art
DESCRIPTION:What exactly is ‘art’? Yasmina Reza’s cult comedy classic uses that as the starting point for a caustic examination of the potentially fragile architecture of friendship. One of the three friends has just bought a very expensive painting – it’s all white. To another friend the painting is a joke\, but do they have the right standards to judge it? The third friend doesn’t really have much of an opinion but get pulled into the disagreement. They square off over the canvas\, using it as an excuse to relentlessly batter one another over various failures … \nSpoiler alert: it’s not really about art per se – the white painting is just the catalyst\, but it does play a significant part in the denouement … \nJihane Tehini and Francesca Bizzarri direct. The original had three men as the friends\, but gender isn’t especially relevant to the script and they have cast three women – Leila Oggar\, Arezoo Sharifi and Jihane Tehini herself. \nLast November\, Complices had a sell-out run at the Junction for an excellent production of Neil Simon’s Rumors (which takes a similarly comic look at human relationships albeit from a rather different angle). On that basis alone we’d vote for this production\, but in any case Reza’s play is cleverly paced\, thoughtful\, heartfelt and ultimately generous. Recommended. \nIt’s in French with English surtitles. There are further shows on 31 January and 1 February.

SUMMARY:Saif Azzuz: Invisible Fish
DESCRIPTION:This first solo exhibition in the Middle East for the SF-based Libyan-Yurok artist takes its title from a poem by Joy Harjo\, which considers cycles of transformation across land\, water\, and time\, moving from submerged environments to human settlement and industrial presence. This show includes paintings\, works on paper\, sculpture\, and moving images\, tracing an ecological and cultural history of the UAE prior to large-scale urban development; Azzuz approaches land and water as lived\, relational systems rather than extractive resources\, foregrounding marine environments\, fishing practices\, and water as both sustenance and connective force across geographies. \nThrough material experimentation and research-driven enquiry\, Azzuz positions water not only as a subject but as a shared condition – one that links place\, history\, and the ongoing negotiation between human activity and the natural world. The Algae Bloom series of paintings are central to this\, with Azzuz working wet-on-wet so that paint bleeds\, drips and merges to produce organic forms that feel suspended and continuously evolving. So rather than literal depictions\, these works function as sensory impressions of aquatic ecosystems shaped by rhythm\, fragility\, and transformation … \nRecommended. To 3 April. \nAbove: Saif Azzuz\, Algae Bloom 2 (detail) (2025)
