SUMMARY:War and Peace
DESCRIPTION:The second and final performance of the Vakhtangov State Academic Theatre adaptation of Tolstoy’s epic novel\, by celebrated director Rimas Tuminas. Reviews suggest that most of the grandeur and complexity of Tolstoy’s work has been retained\, with the Napoleonic Wars as the background for the lives\, ambitions\, hopes and sorrows of the three families portrayed: the Rostovs\, the Bolkonskys\, the Kuragins. It’s performed in Russian with English surtitles.

SUMMARY:Memory under Construction: Rashad Bukhash in conversation with Lina Najem
DESCRIPTION:Architect Rashad Bukhash has restored and protected from demolition hundreds of buildings in Dubai. In this conversation with researcher Lina Najem\, he revisits decades of work on both shores of Dubai Creek\, including a long tenure at Dubai Municipality\, with a look back on what has been learned along the way. \nThis is a public event associated with the Jameel’s Night School 2026\, an intensive five-week seminar programme (which itself is now fully subscribed).

SUMMARY:School is a City: Prasad Shetty and Rupali Gupte
DESCRIPTION:Prasad Shetty and Rupali Gupte reflect on the motivations and challenges that shaped their commitment to the School of Environment and Architecture in Mumbai which they founded in 2014. Today\, it is a fully accredited architecture school with around 200 students\, 30 faculty members\, and a reputation for a critical and playfully experimental approach. Gupte and Shetty suggest one of the clearest ways architects contribute to a city: by engaging those who will soon be designing it. \nThis is a public event associated with the Jameel’s Night School 2026\, an intensive five-week seminar programme (which itself is now fully subscribed).

SUMMARY:Sunday Night Comedy
DESCRIPTION:Dubomedy’s standup night at Social Distrikt returns. This has become a bit of a fixture: good vibes\, good comedy\, and “you never know who will pop in”. Recommended. \nIt’s free\, but it’s popular\, so pre-booking is recommended to get a seat. And there’s a minimum spend of one drink or food item (which you were probably going to get anyhow).

SUMMARY:Aakash Odedra: Songs of the Bulbul
DESCRIPTION:Aakash Odedra returns to the Arts Center with his latest work\, an hour of beautiful\, engrossing virtuoso dance from a single dancer that unashamedly embodies emotions – mostly joy\, some reflection\, a tinge of sadness and pain – in a piece that ultimately describes a journey towards unity with the divine that is the core of Sufism. You don’t have to believe in the spiritual to feel the story\, though; the dancing\, the choreography\, the music\, the lighting are all that good. \nIn Persian tradition the bulbul is the bird we know as the nightingale\, famous for its melodious song and symbolising beauty\, love\, and even springtime in many cultures. The beauty of the bulbul’s singing is supposed to increase as it nears the end of its life\, mirroring the way physical boundaries can be transcended as we move towards enlightenment and the divine. \nTo extract the most powerful melody from the caged bird\, a bulbul underwent a gruelling process of ‘training’. “It was first placed in a pitch-black room so that it would sing out of a desperate longing for light to touch its feathers once more. This was followed by several harsh stages of deprivation. Finally\, in the last stage\, the bird’s eyes were removed. Blinded and broken\, the bird realised its only remaining option was to leave its mortal body by singing one final\, powerful\, and melancholic song – leaving its earthly cage behind to transcend to a higher realm where it could no longer be confined”. \nSongs of the Bulbul shows us this progress from within a minimal but highly effective set designed by Emanuele Salamanca that includes a bank of (electric) candles and endless rose petals. It’s all set off by Fabiana Piccioli’s exquisite\, atmospheric lighting; watch out for the dramatic blinding sequence … \nThe score is by Rushil Ranjan (from the Orchestral Qawwali Project) that weaves classical Indian rhythms with modern orchestral textures. It’s played (in a recording) by co-commissioners Manchester Camerata.  Principal choreography is by Rani Khanam\, a distinguished kathak dancer with more three decades of professional experience and numerous accolades to her name. \nOriginally staged at the Edinburgh International Festival in 2024\, Songs of the Bulbul has been touring in Britain to rave reviews (we saw it somewhat arbitrarily in Norwich). After Abu Dhabi it moves on to three dates in Australia and one in Florida. \nThe performance will be followed by a Q&A with Aakash Odedra and Dr Alka Bagri of the Bagri Foundation\, co-presenter of Songs of the Bulbul. \nOur feature on Songs of the Bulbul is here.

SUMMARY:Localized Futures: Collective Heritage
DESCRIPTION:A key element in 421’s Winter season is Localized Futures: Conversations by 421 x afikra\, a four-part series of talks and panel discussions developed in collaboration with afikra. The series aims to explore the future of key cultural and civic sectors through a uniquely regional lens\, challenging the dominant global narrative by looking at the complexities\, innovations\, and solutions inherent to the MENA region. 421 says this forum will foster high-level public discourse\, share critical local knowledge\, and generally strengthen the local intellectual community. \nThose are grand aims\, but clearly fit the remits of both afikra and 421. This opener explores the roles of museums\, institutions\, policymakers\, and community advocates in defining what ‘heritage’ means – “not as a static relic\, but as a living\,\nevolving source of identity and future-making”. \nOn the panel: \nRanda Omar bin Haidar Managing Partner at Bani & Al Culture\, a consultancy specialising in research and development for arts and culture projects in the region \nSalama Nasser Al Shamsi Director of Cultural sites at DCT Abu Dhabi\, where she is responsible for managing 16 cultural sites throughout the Emirate and oversees cultural preservation efforts and programmes to promote Abu Dhabi’s heritage \nSafiya Al Maskari Project Manager at Lest We Forget\, a researcher whose expertise lies in documenting oral memories of the people in the UAE \nModerated by Mikey Muhanna\, top interviewer across culture\, policy\, academia\, media\, and the arts. \nThe upcoming Localized Futures topics are Education (10 Feb)\, Cities & Communities (2 Apr) and Arts (9 Apr).

SUMMARY:Picasso\, the Figure
DESCRIPTION:A landmark monographic exhibition that traces Picasso’s lifelong preoccupation with the human form. Included are more than 130 artworks from the Musée National Picasso-Paris and other institutions\, as well as Louvre Abu Dhabi\, DCT Abu Dhabi\, and other regional collections that suggest the artist’s influence on the Arab world; also featured are works by key Arab modernists who have engaged with Picasso’s legacy\, such as Jewad Selim’s Alqailoula [The Nap] (1958\, below). \n \nThe exhibition offers a chronological itinerary of Picasso’s radical transformations\, intertwining figuration with enduring mythological archetypes across painting\, sculpture\, drawing\, and ceramics. It is curated by Cécile Debray\, Virginie Perdrisot-Cassan (both from Musée national Picasso–Paris) and Aisha AlAhmadi (Associate Curator at Louvre Abu Dhabi). \nUnmissable. To 31 May.

SUMMARY:Emirates Airline Festival of Literature
DESCRIPTION:LitFest is back with the usual rich brew of panel discussions and conversations\, talks\, workshops\, family activities and the LitFest After Hours programme. It looks like the biggest and most varied yet\, so that probably means it will be the best … \nSome sessions are free (including workshops for beginner writers) but most are charged-for – AED 50 upwards (AED 200 for many of the single-author sessions\, AED 300+ for workshops\, AED 425 for the Desert Stanzas poetry-music performances under the stars). There’s a multi-day pass at AED 400\, which looks like a bargain – in fac it only gets you into Conversations\, Family Activities\, and LitFest After Hours\, but you could easily spend a lot more than 400 on those. \nMore multi-session pass options would be a good thing. So would a scheduler; there are 22 venue rooms in total and half-hour slots between 8am and 10pm across the seven days (not all of which are filled\, of course\, but there are more than 150 events in total) so it can get quite complicated looking for non-clashing events. There’s a PDF grid here which might help\, though it’s bit and difficult to use; something a bit more AI-ish would have been better – “is this mix of events doable?” or “will I have time to get from A to B?” for instance.

SUMMARY:Rob Beckett: Giraffe
DESCRIPTION:Rob Beckett is getting near to the end of a sell-out tour with his new show. The affable bloke-near-door of British comedy is known for his turns on shows like Would I Lie to You\, Celebs Go Dating\, 8 Out of 10 Cats\, and his TV double acts with Romesh Ranganathan\, and he’s been a fixture on the international comedy circuit for years – loud\, loveable\, completely (and often accidentally) unfiltered. He’s usually good value for money\, especially when he gets stuck into a story … \nNote that it’s an early start at 6pm. \n(There are no wild animals in the show\, so why Giraffe? Because it’s rhyming slang for laugh\, and because he always wanted to have a long neck.)

SUMMARY:Shamsa Al Omaira: Hard Like Tears\, Soft Like Glass
DESCRIPTION:A solo exhibition for Shamsa Al Omaira\, an Abu Dhabi based multidisciplinary artist and designer. Evocations of duality occupy a prominent position in her work; childhood bedding and memories of jelly desserts morph into soft-looking sculptures laced with hidden or overt symbols of harm in ceramic and glass shards. How precarious is childhood? \nAs part of the gallery’s programme\, Al Omaira was mentored by UAE-based curator and art critic Nadine Khalil over the last year\, resulting in a development of her practice and experimentation with new mediums\, including woodwork\, stitching and installation works. \nTo 30 April.

SUMMARY:Sikka Art and Design Festival
DESCRIPTION:The 14th edition of what has become one of Dubai Culture’s flagship initiatives is back in Al Shindagha Historic District\, this year with the theme ‘Imagining Dubai: Identities of the Future’. \nThe festival promises “a diverse array of artworks” in gallery and public art formats\, workshops\, panel discussions\, live performances\, food and retail markets\, “and other activities”. As usual there doesn’t seem to be any specific advance information – no website\, no overall directory/guide – but the press releases says there will be more than 250 artworks showing in 16 houses. To find out what’s out when the Instagram feed is probably your best option\, but with less than a week to go it was still full of last year’s info. \nStill\, Sikka is always worth the trip – especially as it’s free to enter.

The programme this year has 29 screenings\, including two Academy Award–nominated titles\, reflecting the breadth of contemporary Palestinian cinema across fiction\, documentary\, and short form. \nMost screenings are followed by a Q&A with the director or cast. Note that Quoz Arts Fest takes place on 24 and 25 January\, so you’ll also need a ticket for that (AED 100 per day) before you can get to Cinema Akil …

SUMMARY:Le mystère Picasso | The Mystery of Picasso: dir Henri-Georges Clouzot (1956)
DESCRIPTION:One of the best films about Picasso\, a documentary that captures his creative process by using novel filming techniques. The artist produced around 20 drawings and paintings specifically for the film\, using inks and paints that bled through the paper\, with a camera mounted at the back of the easel to capture the act of creation in real time. In the edit Clouzot employed a kind of stop-motion effect to speed up the process and depict the development of the works. \nThis should be a great accompaniment to the current Louvre show. It’s free\, but you will have to buy a museum general admission ticket.

SUMMARY:Jesús Herrera Flamenco Ballet: Hamlet
DESCRIPTION:A flamenco ballet\, inspired by Shakespeare’s tragedy and featuring more than 30 artists in total — dancers\, orchestra\, choir — under the direction of Spanish choreographer Jesús Herrera. It should be an interesting interpretation of the play: “movement replaces words and every gesture reflects the eternal human conflict between reason and passion”. The music is “inspired by” Mussorgsky\, merged with flamenco singing for “a collision of classical and contemporary worlds\, of light and shadow\, silence and rhythm”. There are shows at 5pm and 9pm.

SUMMARY:Juliet Makhlouf: Admiring Ancestors
DESCRIPTION:More than 30 new paintings\, offering a comprehensive survey of the artist’s recent work. This show approaches ancestry as a living presence rather than a distant past\, reflecting on civilizations whose surviving traces – clay tablets\, systems of law and trade\, and foundational narratives such as the Epic of Gilgamesh – continue to shape collective human memory. The story of Syria is presented as inseparable from that of the wider Arab world\, formed through centuries of shared history\, values\, and belief. \nTo 8 February.

SUMMARY:Quoz Arts Festival
DESCRIPTION:Quoz Arts Fest returns to Alserkal Avenue on 24 and 25 January with a mix of experimental art installations\, live music\, exhibitions\, “food experiences”\, and “encounters designed for all ages”. Basmah El Bittar\, Director of Alserkal Avenue\, reckons the 2026 Quoz Fest highlights the depth of regional talent – “artists whose work reflects the pulse\, perspective and creative energy of the region … local artisans whose craft and culinary expressions shape the cultural fabric of the festival …” \nThere’s no theme as such\, but the press release says “this edition foregrounds practices that invite movement\, collective listening\, and new modes of engaging with art in public spaces\, transforming the neighbourhood into a space for sound\, gesture\, and shared experience”. Which could cover just about any festival with a performance and visual art component\, but hey … \nMusic\nThis year’s music programme is led by the Palestinian hip-hop collective DAM and Gayathri Krishnan on Saturdays\, Lebanese singer-songwriter Yasmine Hamdan (indie-Arabic royalty) plus TootArd (below) on Sunday. Throughout the weekend\, Stage 2.0 offers a dedicated platform for the emerging and less well known\, a “space for experimentation\, exchange\, and new collaborations” as the blurb has it. \n \nThe Fridge Warehouse is also running two days of evening shows – Serena & The Velvet Chords and Calista Liaw on Saturday\, Imelda Gabs and Hosny on Sunday – with Open Mic slots between sets for new talent to showcase their work (if you’re interested there are still some slots available\, we hear). \nArt\nFrom the Lips to the Moon (below) is a “collaborative sonic journey” created for the festival by Pouya Ehsaei and Tara Fatehi – an immersive soundscape shaped by voice\, gesture\, and improvisation. And Jean-Baptiste André will present Floe\, a nomadic project bringing together a visual installation designed by Vincent Lamouroux that sets as a stage for a choreographed performance. \n \nThe biggie is Numen/For Use’s TAPE project at Concrete (top). This is a series of site-specific cocoon-like structures shaped through self-forming processes inspired by patterns found in nature – each installation begins as a set of linear trajectories stretched across the space\, before being diagonally wrapped in layers of elastic tape. Says the PR: “these installations dissolve the boundaries between sculpture and architecture\, turning viewers into participants and space into a shared organism …” This is the project’s first time in Dubai\, but it has been presented successfully in more than 10 cities around the world. \nCommunity et al\nJossa at Warehouse 45 has activity zones with fun soft structures for kids\, Mawaheb has a multimedia presentation of works by adults of determination\, and the Reel Palestine souk returns with 50+ vendors selling crafts and food rooted in Palestinian heritage. And there will be many curated pop-ups\, warehouse takeovers\, and “neighbourhood culinary concepts” across the lanes. \nExtras\nAlongside the ‘official’ programme (which you get in return for your entrance fee of AED 100 per day – no\, theren’t any discount if you buy a two-day pass) many of the Avenue’s regular venues are putting on shows of their own (with separate\, and therefore additional\, ticketing). They include Cinema Akil with Reel Palestine screenings starting this weekend\, and the Junction is running three fringe-ish shows (Hold on to your Butts\, La Lezione di Teatro | The Acting Class and Fly\, You Fools!) perhaps as a precursor to the fully-fledged fringe festival it plans to bring to Al Quoz later this year.

SUMMARY:La Lezione di Teatro | The Acting Class
DESCRIPTION:A joyful lesson in theatre and a tribute to the theatrical talent of Italians for connecting to anyone\, transcending language barriers. Set partly in English and partly in Italian (and without subtitles)\, the show ironically demolishes preconceived notions of the difficulty of theatre language and highlights how communication problems can be solved with theatrical bodywork \nThe plot is simple enough\, based in the tradition of the comedy of errors: an actress receives a student for a private drama lesson in her apartment; he is eager to learn the tricks of the trade\, she is thrilled at the idea of making him fall in love with Italian theatre. The lesson falters on language problems\, and communication breaks down until the universal language of commedia dell’arte comes to the rescue … \nThere’s a second performance tomorrow (25 January) at 1.30pm. \nThis is one of three fringe-adjacent shows at the Junction today\, playing along with Hold on to Your Butts and Fly\, You Fools! as part of Quoz Arts Fest – so you’ll have to buy a ticket to get into the festival (one day pass AED 100\, two-day pass AED 200) as well as a ticket for the show. DESCRIPTION:Two blokes and a Foley artist deliver a high-energy shot-for-shot parody of the iconic 90s film Jurassic Park\, playing all the key characters (including most of the dinosaurs). SUMMARY:Constant Adjustment
DESCRIPTION:This year’s film programme as part of the Jameel’s Night School 2026 has five shorts exploring how neighbourhoods and other places endure over time. through ways of property markets\, political erasure\, and the whim of human interest. The screening will be followed by a discussion between the programme’s curator Hind Mezaina and Todd Reisz\, leader of the Night School. \nThe programme: \nWunderland Kalkar dir Ila Bêka & Louise Lemoin (2024\, 5 mins) \nWunderland Kalkar is an amusement park built at a former nuclear power station in Germany. It was completed in 1985\, one year before the Chernobyl disaster; under pressure from local interest groups\, it was finally cancelled in 1991. What to do with an infrastructure now made obsolete but far too massive to be dismantled? \nAl Basateen | The Orchards dir Antoine Chapon (2025\, 25 mins) \nIn 2015\, the Basateen al-Razi district of Damascus was razed to the ground as punishment for the population’s uprising against the regime. Having lost everything\, two former residents recall their neighbourhood. \nOkay Keskidee!
