DESCRIPTION:Talal Al Najjar’s works feel very contemporary\, not just in his use of materials and technologuy but also in his concerns and ambitions. He produces sculpture\, video\, sound\, CGI animation\, painting\, and installation\, in addition to writing and curation; his is a research-driven interdisciplinary practice that seeks to recontextualise material culture\, artefacts\, and imagery. This ‘defamiliarisation’\, overlaid with irony and seen through an absurdist lens\, prompts anthropological and material questions. Dear Children\, Sincerely (DCS) is an ongoing research project\, initiated in Sri Lanka in 2015\, which gathers stories from people born in the 1930s and presents them to younger generations through live performance. DESCRIPTION:The Courtyard’s most peopular evening of elimination improv. Ten actors converge for a night of scenes\, songs and games based on audience suggestions. After each round you score the players on a scale of 1 to 5\, and the one with the lowest score is knocked out. Eventually only one remains\, to be crowned the Maestro. “Fast-paced\, unpredictable\, and hilarious” says the promo\, and you couldn’t argue with that. Boutros-Ghali’s art speaks to the pure and unrestricted physicality of painting\, and his compositions reflect a meticulous yet openhearted response to the human condition – marvels of reason buoyed by a lifetime’s worth of lyricism. \nWassef Boutros-Ghali passed away in March 2023\, aged 98. He was painting right up until his death. \nTo 5 November. DESCRIPTION:Influenced by the likes of Lucian Freud and Egon Schiele\, Khosravi’s drawings and paintings suggest that he’s looking for artistic ideas – “for him\, how to encounter pieces is important than pieces itself”. But does have a characteristic style of painting groups of people that appear to be faded photographs; the viewer has the same sense of nostalgia and reminiscence of better times as they would if they were looking at old family photos.
