SUMMARY:Amina Illuminati
DESCRIPTION:Says the gallery: “In an era of visual noise and the relentless pace of modern life\, Amina Illuminati offers a moment of stillness — a space where matter becomes light\, and form becomes revelation”. It’s a group show for work by Alessandro Montalbano (Italy)\, Valeriya Isyak (Russia)\, Hadil Moufti (Saudi Arabia)\, Elnaz Javani (Iran/USA) and Alyazya Almansoori (UAE). The artists come from different cultures but the exhibition title reflects a shared artistic pursuit: “transforming matter into light\, emotion into form\, and tradition into present experience”. The curator is Marina Baisel\, founder of the gallery. \nTo 21 November.

SUMMARY:Bahman Mohasses: The Existential Grotesque
DESCRIPTION:The gallery describes Mohasses (d.2020) as “one of Iran’s most enigmatic modern artists … A painter\, sculptor\, and translator\, Mohasses carved out a unique space in Iranian art\, setting himself apart through his radical embrace of European modernism and a profound existential inquiry into human existence”. SUMMARY:Lala Rukh: The importance of staying quiet
DESCRIPTION:The first exhibition of the new iteration of The importance of staying quiet\, a survey of Pakistani art\, features photographic archives from Lala Rukh’s years at the University of Chicago (1974–76). It includes early works that carry a cinematic sense of composition before arriving at her later language of minimal abstraction\, revealing the sharpening of her framing and the intent of her gaze\, \nUnlike her formal exhibitions\, the Chicago photographs are not minimal or abstract. They contain architecture\, people\, animals\, objects\, and most importantly\, construct narratives; the ‘set’ and direction recall filmic technique. These photos document Lala’s new surroundings and influences as she encountered the art\, music\, and politics that encouraged experimentation … \nTo 5 November.

SUMMARY:Ammar Al Attar: Silent Residues
DESCRIPTION:The first solo exhibition for a key figure of the contemporary avant-garde in the UAE\, curated by Nasser Abdullah. This series engages with abandoned and derelict spaces across the Emirates in a playful\, insightful way. Often using desert settings and largely forgotten industrial sites\, Al Attar documents a series of repetitive physical gestures on black-and-white inkjet prints that are punctuated with bold\, colourful forms that heighten the dialogue between the artist and his surroundings. \n“After a long journey through the world of photography and experimentation in the realm of performance art\, Al Attar was led from behind the camera’s lens to becoming the central subject of his own works\,” says curator Nasser Abdullah in the opening press release. “He enters a new phase by offering a series of reflections and critical questions on the transformations of the rapidly evolving post-Covid world\, highlighting technology\, economics and global politics.” \nTo 26 November. \nAbove: Ammar Al Attar\, Coloured Cement blocks (2025)

SUMMARY:Benji Reid: Find Your Eyes
DESCRIPTION:With Find Your Eyes\, Benji Reid has made a performance that is unlike any you will have seen. Other artists have approached the creative process itself as performance; but no one else has combined photography\, choreography and theatre to make such striking\, often surreal images to tell an emotional rollercoaster of a story. \nFind Your Eyes draws on Benji Reid’s work both as an award-winning photographer and a pioneer of hip hop theatre to create images in real time in front of the audience. He sits at the centre of the stage\, his ‘studio’\, with three dancers posing for the camera; as he shoots his models\, the iamges appear on large screens. The performance priogresses with the photoshoot becoming more and more elaborate\, interwoven with episodes of Reid’s own life … \n“This performance is a meditation on tragedy and immense joy\,” says Reid. “It serves as a conversation with myself to unearth where I’ve been all these years – a dialogue about struggling with alcohol\, grappling with the immense pain of my mother’s stroke\, and contending with the depths of mental health struggles\, shame\, and guilt. However\, this work is also a celebration of evolution\, a journey of moving forward\, finding breath\, discovering love\, and embracing life’s beautiful imperfections.” \nThis Arab World premiere is presented with the support of Dance Reflections by Van Cleef & Arpels; there’s a second show tomorrow (Saturday 20 September).

SUMMARY:Monif Ajaj: Shams
DESCRIPTION:New ink drawings on paper and acrylic paintings on canvas from the French-based Syrian artist that offer viewers a journey through colour\, symbolism\, and contemplation. These are works that “reflect on the mystical power of nature\, its geometry and order\, and the existential questions it raises about human nature”\, drawing inspiration from the fields of sunflowers that grow around Ajaj’s Dordogne home. The sunflower is in dialogue with a snake motif. – “while the sunflower follows light\, embodying warmth and optimism\, the snake [is] a signifier of temptation and betrayal; in other traditions\, a symbol of renewal and healing. The works invite viewers to consider that within darkness lies the potential for renewal”. \nTo 31 October. \nAbove: Monif Ajaj\, Untitled (2024)

SUMMARY:Bady Dalloul: Self-portrait with a Cat I Don’t Have
DESCRIPTION:Bady Dalloul’s first institutional solo exhibition in the UAE is an extended solo show curated by Art Jameel’s Lucas Morin. The artworks feature fragile heroes and ordinary people navigating systems larger than themselves; Dalloul repurposes everyday materials (including books\, matchboxes\, board games and magazines) to elevate everyday narratives into epics\, bridging high- and low-brow\, and importantly\, linking into  non-Western cultures outside conventional delineations and the Eurocentric gaze. \nFor example\, ‘Age of Empires’ – a new series of 50 works on paper specially made for this exhibition – uses onmyōdō\, a 19th-century Japanese astrology manual\, to contemplate the life and death of imperial power. ‘Matchboxes’\, a series of dozens of minuscule drawings framed in matchboxes on the gallery walls\, offer snapshots of everyday scenes\, news broadcasts and political developments witnessed by the artist over the years\, notably in his family’s native Syria. Inside a recreated apartment inspired by Dalloul’s live-in studio in Dubai\, multiple small works retrace the last five years of his nomadic practice. \nThe opening on 20 September will include a conversation between Bady Dalloul and Ahmed Makia\, Lucas Morin\, Ala Younis\, and Mizuho Yamazaki. \nTo 22 February.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Asunción Molinos Gordo: The Peasant\, the Scholar and the Engineer
DESCRIPTION:Asunción Molinos Gordo’s second major collaboration with Art Jameel – following her 2019 Artist’s Garden\, In Transit (Botany of a Journey) – is her first retrospective exhibition in West Asia. This show spans 15 years of Molinos Gordo’s work\, tracing her journey from foundational artwork on food systems and agriculture in Egypt and the Arab world to recent investigations of Arab and Muslim heritage in her native Spain. \nCentral to her work is the concept of pensamiento campesino (peasant knowledge)—the accumulated wisdom and expertise of small farmers over centuries\, often overlooked by agronomic science and prevailing notions of progress. Molinos Gordo aims to reclaim this knowledge to foster more sustainable relationships with land\, resources\, and social harmony. For the artist\, this perspective is vital to achieving food sovereignty\, sustainability and the long-term stability of the global food supply. \nThe exhibition brings together key works that defined Molinos Gordo’s engagement with histories of food production and agriculture. They include the 2015 Sharjah Biennial Prize winner WAM (World Agriculture Museum) (2010). Emblematic of the latest developments of her practice\, Como solíamos (As we used to) (2020) is a large-scale rammed-earth installation that evokes the vernacular irrigation systems of Al-Andalus and reflects on the transformations of agricultural land over time.

SUMMARY:SILA: All that is Left to You
DESCRIPTION:In times of adversity\, especially amid the ongoing devastation in Gaza\, tatreez – the ancient practice of hand-embroidery\, a foundational element of Palestinian intangible heritage – becomes an act of survival and defiance. This exhibition of works by 25 artists honours the centuries-old practice and reimagined it through a contemporary lens. Several of the featured works are the result of direct collaboration with master embroiderers from the Inaash Association\, ensuring the preservation of the authenticity and the evolving spirit of tatreez. \nThe participating artists: \nAmer Shomali\nAbdel Rahman Katanani\nAreen Hassan\nAya Haidar\nBokja\nCristiana de Marchi\nDahouk Chamsi-Pasha\nFarah Behbehani\nHazem Harb\nKatya Traboulsi\nJoanna Barakat\nLeila Jabre Jureidini\nLiane Al Ghusain\nMaysaloun Faraj\nNada Debs\nNaima Almajdobah\nnaqsh collective\nNour Hage\nOmarvis\nSama Alshaibi\nSamar Hejazi\nSamia Halaby\nTala Hammoud Atrouni\nSteve Sabella\nZaid Farouki \nThe public opening (11am on 21 September) includes a guided tour of the exhibition led by the curators Cima Azzam (Maraya Art Centre) and Noor Suhail (1971 – Design Space). That’s followed at 1.30pm by a panel discussion – Tatreez: from Stitch to Symbol\, moderated by Wafa Ghnaim\, Founder of the Tatreez Institute\, and featuring speakers Rula Alami (founder of the Sila Movement\, a social fabric and clothing cooperative in Palestine: “we see clothing as a way to unite people\, to build a community where every individual contributes to the collective\, and as a way to educate people and bring awareness to social injustices happening around the globe”); Joanna Barakat (artist\, founder of The Tatreez Circle and author of Narrative Threads: Palestinian Embroidery in Contemporary Art); and Farah Behbehani (artist and calligrapher). \nTo 5 January.

SUMMARY:Public Art Abu Dhabi Biennial: Bik Van der Pol’s The poem that jumps the fence
DESCRIPTION:Artist duo Bik Van der Pol (Liesbeth Bik and Jos Van der Pol) engage in collaborative projects on how art constructs public spaces for speculative thought and collective creativity. The poem that jumps the fence features weekly performances on Abu Dhabi Beach and workshops connecting words and sand as real and symbolic material that binds our world; every Sunday afternoon\, a performer writes a poem in the sand\, only for it to fade away. During workshops in collaboration with local poets and writers\, participants generate text for the performances. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Beethoven’s The Fifths
DESCRIPTION:A proper full-scale orchestral concert evening\, even if the combination of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony and his Piano Concerto No.5 (“Emperor”) feels as though it might be driven more by marketing than a natural musical combination. Still\, there are no complaints over the orchestra – the Hungarian State Opera Orchestra under the baton of István Dénes – or the soloist for the piano concerto\, Leeds International Piano Competition winner Anna Tsybuleva (above). Should be a good evening.

SUMMARY:Ala Younis: Past of a Temporal Universe
DESCRIPTION:This mid-career retrospective marks the first institutional survey in the region for Ala Younis. It includes archival installations\, textiles\, murals\, mosaics\, and drawings spanning the last two decades of her hybrid practice as an artist-researcher-curator. There will also be some major new works\, including a collaboration with historian Dr Masha Kirasirova supported by NYUAD’s Research Kitchens\, and new projects developed during the artist’s tenure as research scholar at NYUAD’s al Mawrid Arab Center for the Study of Art. \nInformed by her training in architecture and visual cultures\, Younis’ projects centre on the physical developments and narrative intersections of the Arab geographies in which she grew up\, frequently drawing from a wide range of formal and informal archives. Together\, these works trace conceptual and formal throughlines in her work\, from the tools and skills she developed as she emerged in the art scene of Amman to her experiments in navigating new knowledge as she evolved the unique methods and perspective for which she is noted today. \nTo 18 January.

SUMMARY:Wednesday Night Impro: Maestro
DESCRIPTION:The Courtyard’s most peopular evening of elimination improv. Ten actors converge for a night of scenes\, songs and games based on audience suggestions. After each round you score the players on a scale of 1 to 5\, and the one with the lowest score is knocked out. Eventually only one remains\, to be crowned the Maestro. “Fast-paced\, unpredictable\, and hilarious” says the promo\, and you couldn’t argue with that. As with all Courtyard improv evenings it’s free\, but you need to put your name on the guestlist (via the website); and it’s first-come first-served\, so get there early to grab a seat. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Sebastian Hosu: Transmission
DESCRIPTION:The debut solo exhibition in Dubai by the German Romanian artist introduces a new body of work that captures human presence in flux figures that dissolve into their surroundings. Known for his monumental canvases and emotionally charged brushwork\, Hosu invites viewers into immersive environments where the human figure merges with landscapes of colour\, memory\, and motion; the monumental scale of these paintings is central to their power\, requiring viewers to encounter them not so much as images as environments. The intensity of the brushwork\, the spatial tension\, and the psychological presence of the figures reveal themselves in ways no reproduction can fully capture. \nTo 21 October.

SUMMARY:Leda Catunda: I like to like what others are liking
DESCRIPTION:The most comprehensive solo exhibition to date of Brazilian artist Leda Catunda outside her home country. Sharjah Art Foundation is presenting four decades of Catunda’s practice\, tracing the transformation of her art from figurative painting to hybrid forms that explore materiality\, abstraction and dimensionality; her works typically explore the limits of textures and materials\, exemplifed by her ‘soft paintings’ over materials like toweling\, bedclothes\, leather\, velvet and silk. But the scope is broad: from large-scale installations to elemental watercolours\, each piece embodies a sensuous negotiation between the handmade and the mass-produced\, offering a whimsical critique of pop culture and consumerism. \nThe exhibition is curated by Hoor Al Qasimi\,  director Sharjah Art Foundation\, with Meera Madhu\, Curatorial Assistant at the Foundation. \nTo 8 February.
