SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Shingo Yamazaki: Mauka to Makai
DESCRIPTION:The Middle East solo debut for the LA-based artist\, known for layered\, poetic paintings that explore the intersection of memory\, identity\, and place. Says the gallery: “Yamazaki constructs atmospheric compositions where domestic interiors dissolve into natural landscapes. Veil-like layers of transparent paint mimic the elusive quality of recollection\, guiding viewers through spaces that feel both personal and universal …”

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Summer Collective: Wavering Hope
DESCRIPTION:Ayyam Gallery’s summer group show celebrates and questions the current siutation in Syria with works by Kais Salman\, Khaled Takreti\, Tammam Azzam\, Abdalla Al Omari\, Othman Moussa\, Safwan Dahoul\, Thaier Helal\, Elias Izoli\, Abdul-Karim Majd Al-Beik\, Mohannad Orabi\, Nihad Al-Turk\, and Yasmine Al Awa. \nAs Ayyam marks two decades of championing Syrian contemporary art\, this exhibition provides a testament to a generation that has not only survived history\, but shaped it – as the gallery says\, “For over two decades of conflict\, displacement\, and resistance\, Syrian artists have relied on their creative practices as a lifeline. Through these practices\, they have fought against erasure\, preserved memory\, and expressed truths too heavy for language alone …” The fall of the Assad regime in December has led to a new chapter: “even in this long-awaited moment\, a deeper question surfaced: was this truly an end\, or merely the next turn in a long cycle of hope and despair?” \nThis year’s Summer Collective echoes that feeling and also reflects on Ayyam’s own journey. Through their individual visions\, the artists in the ummer Collective map the emotional\, political\, and cultural aftermath of conflict\, and the fragile hope that emerges in its wake. Says the gallery: “The show is a reminder that in Syria\, hope is rarely straightforward. It is layered with doubt\, shadowed by memory\, and always vulnerable to being undone. Yet it endures. And in the hands of these artists\, it is made visible – transformed into images\, forms\, and gestures that challenge us to remember\, to reflect\, and to imagine something beyond despair”.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Béchir Boussandel: Tenté par d'autres soleils (Tempted by Other Suns)
DESCRIPTION:The Dubai iteration of this show\, which is presented in collaboration with Kamel Lazaar Foundation and has previously been shown at B7L9 Art Centre in Tunis\, introduces a new body of work in blown glass – a departure from Béchir’s predominantly canvas-based practice. These works centre on the figure of the gleaner\, individuals who collect waste to survive. \nBorn in France but deeply rooted in Bizerte\, Tunisia\, Béchir works across painting\, blown glass\, metal\, and organic materials to tell stories of migration\, urban transformation\, and survival. Through a layered and symbolic approach\, he constructs a material language that feels delicate and durable. The exhibition’s title borrows from French philosopher Claire Marin: “Like migratory birds\, we are always tempted by other suns.” One can’t help but think of the gleaners (known locally as barbechas)\, those who have come from far away\, gleaning from the ground\, some still dreaming of crossing into Europe …

SUMMARY:Barcelona Flamenco Ballet: Carmen
DESCRIPTION:BFB reinterprets Bizet’s iconic work with flamenco elements that effectively adapt the original to the realities of contemporary society. “The values that make Carmen a woman of our time\, along with the adaptation of music and flamenco ballet infused with the distinctive signature of David Gutiérrez\, place the work within a new paradigm — that of the universal myth and 21st-century flamenco.” \nCarmen is pain\, passion and a cry for freedom\, all emotions that flamenco represents; and of course the story by Prosper Mérimée is rooted in the flamenco world of Carmen the gypsy and her love for Escamillo the bullfighter. The show mixes flamenco singing (with contemporary flourishes of jazz) with the original music; the choreography fuses flamenco ballet with contemporary dance. \nThis show has been reviewed enthusiastically in Europe and elsewhere; it should appeal effectively to fans of opera\, flamenco\, classical dance\, music\, and theatre alike. \nIt runs for around 80 minutes\, and three’s a second performance on 7 September.

SUMMARY:Public Art Abu Dhabi Biennial: Bik Van der Pol’s The poem that jumps the fence
DESCRIPTION:Artist duo Bik Van der Pol (Liesbeth Bik and Jos Van der Pol) engage in collaborative projects on how art constructs public spaces for speculative thought and collective creativity. The poem that jumps the fence features weekly performances on Abu Dhabi Beach and workshops connecting words and sand as real and symbolic material that binds our world; every Sunday afternoon\, a performer writes a poem in the sand\, only for it to fade away. During workshops in collaboration with local poets and writers\, participants generate text for the performances. \n  \n

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Richi Bhatia: Antevasin – the one who sits at the border of two worlds
DESCRIPTION:The first solo exhibition at Gallery Isabelle for the UAE-based Indian artist. Her practice spans drawing\, performance\, object-making\, food interventions\, and assemblage; says the gallery\, “inviting us to engage with liminality\, her work challenges the normative categories that shape our understanding of the world and our relationships with its human and nonhuman inhabitants … Her work is at once intimate and transnational. It asks us to sit uncomfortably with the deep interconnections between heritage\, livelihood\, home\, and community-making with various forms of violence and exploitation”. \nAntevasin – the one who sits at the border of two worlds – serves as a guiding figure in this world. Through both process and form\, Bhatia’s work illuminates the porous\, shifting boundaries between life and death; Bhatia grounds much of her practice in fish and meat markets\, engaging with the lives of humans and animals whose labour and bodies are entangled within the global food industry. \nTo 10 September. \n

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Tajammul
DESCRIPTION:The XVA group show for the summer\, curated by Carina Vicente\, promises “beauty and grace\, capturing the aesthetics of the evolving art landscape in the contemporary Middle East” – the title comes from the Arabic root word for beauty (jamaal)\, “signifying efforts to make oneself beautiful in appearance or courteous in deed … In this way\, Tajammul implies a form of grace that comes from infusing places\, spaces\, and situations with a sense of elegant beauty and social ease. It reflects the way that the United Arab Emirates is not only a place of fine art\, high culture\, sweeping architecture\, and dynamic change\, but a place of close connections\, loyal friendships\, and warm hospitality. Certainly it’s an impressive (and impressively diverse) roster of participants. \nThe artists: \n\n\n\nBasil Alkazzi\nHussein Al-Mohasen\nCharlotte de Bekker\nCC (Alireza Asbahi)\nImran Channa\nElizabeth Dorazio\nOussama Garti\nMahmoud Hamadani\nDavid Howarth\nRichard Ketley\nBehdad Lahooti\nColleen Quigley\nTor Seidel\nMoussa Tiba\nMorteza Zahedi\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Whispers of the Past
DESCRIPTION:A group show by Aisha Alabbar Gallery in collaboration with Sotheby’s Middle East at Sotheby’s gallery space in DIFC. It featyures five influential rgeional artists – Najat Makki\, Khalid Al Banna\, Sara Al Haddad\, Sara Aref Ahli\, and Samar Hejazi – each of whom draws from personal narratives\, regional histories\, and cultural heritage to create works that engage with questions of memory\, identity\, and inheritance\, offering nuanced reflections on how the past shapes both individual and collective experience. \nSays the gallery: “At the heart of the exhibition lies an invitation to listen closely to the stories etched in surfaces\, suspended in space\, or woven through patterns and repetition. ‘Whispers of the Past’ does not speak loudly; instead\, it draws viewers into a contemplative space\, where quiet gestures reveal enduring legacies”. \nThe opening programme includes Brushes Between Us: Art and Legacy\, a brunch talk to open the exhibition at 11.30am on 11 September. Munira Al Sayegh moderates a panel that includes artists Najat Makki\, Khaled Al Banna\, and Sara Al Haddad. SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Omar Al Gurg: Everyman’s Mountain
DESCRIPTION:The Emirati artist and designer’s inaugural solo exhibition comprises a series of photographs that documents the striking ecological diversity of Mount Kilimanjaro. Captured through Al Gurg’s attentive and empathetic gaze during a six-day journey in 2021\, this work offers “a nuanced exploration of the mountain as a living\, evolving ecosystem shaped by natural forces and human presence … His images reveal the mountain’s layered habitats\, from mist-laden forests and regenerating moorlands affected by recent fires to the fragile ice caps near the summit … At the heart of Everyman’s Mountain lies a meditation on scale and significance”.

SUMMARY:Every Brilliant Thing
DESCRIPTION:A very welcome return for this single-hander play that has already been a smash hit at the Junction four times in the last three years. It’s not hard to see why: written by the English playwright/director Duncan Macmillan with actor/writer/comedian Johnny Donahoe\, it manages to be both intimate and interactive\, a touching\, funny\, and uplifting play that chronicles life’s small joys and reveals the lengths to which we will go for those we love. \nAs his mother battles chronic depression\, a child creates a list of every thing they can think of that makes life worth living. As the child grows\, so does the list. Looking back on a life of ups and downs\, the man takes the audience on an inspiring journey that celebrates finding joy in the mundane and being grateful for the simple pleasures hiding all around us. \nThe Guardian called the original Edinburgh Festival production “one of the funniest plays you’ll ever see about depression – and possibly one of the funniest plays you’ll ever see\, full stop”. The Junction’s main man Gautam Goenka directs and performs. Highly recommended. \nThere are further performances on 13 and 14 September. \n

SUMMARY:Game. Set. Match.
DESCRIPTION:The Playhouse Studio Theatre at New Covent Garden (located in a much-revamped Mall of the Emirates space that now includes a fully-equipped 575-seater theatre plus dance and rehearsal studios and a new restaurant) opens with this new Tall Tales / Cross Bronx Studio production.. \nIt has been adapted from the 2016 Italian film Perfect Strangers\, itself a critical and commercial success that has resonated with audiences around the world and generated a number of remakes and reworkings; for this production\, writer Sid Abbas has switched the locale to Dubai’s tennis scene. Set in a luxury tennis club suite\, the play follows seven long-time friends reunited for a destination wedding; but a seemingly innocent game of sharing phone messages and calls turns into digital Russian roulette. Secrets\, affairs\, emotional confessions\, and some truly terrible texting etiquette emerge … We’re promised fast-paced dialogue\, laugh-out-loud moments\, and gut-punch emotional turns: “if you’ve ever been in a relationship\, had a group chat\, or made a mistake you hoped your partner would never see — this play is for you”. \nSatya Baskaran directs. \nThe play run 12 to 14 September at 7.30pm\, with a 3pm matinée on 13 September.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE To Know Malaysia is to Love Malaysia: Major Highlights from The AFK Collection
DESCRIPTION:A group show by pioneering first-generation Malaysian contemporary artists\, selected from The AFK Collection — the most comprehensive collection of Malaysian contemporary art from the 1980s to the present. Exhbiited artists include Ahmad Shukri Mohammed\, Ahmad Fuad Osman\, Ali Nurazmal\, Anniketyni Madian\, Fauzan Omar\, Hamir Soib\, Masnoor Ramli\, Susyilawati Sulaiman\, Yusof Ghani\, and Zulkifli Yusoff. \nThe featured artists have witnessed Malaysia’s transformation from a largely agrarian\, newly independent country to a modern\, dynamic nation. As well as highlighting the individual artists\, the exhibition will address critical aspects of that journey; by contextualising these works within broader social and political frameworks\, the exhibition aims to create a broader understanding of contemporary Malaysian society.

SUMMARY:Ruba Salameh: Refined Compositions
DESCRIPTION:In the face of genocide\, Palestinian artist Ruba Salameh finds her way forward through abstract painting – weaving her own narrative while connecting across generations to the work of art historian and artist Kamal Boullata. \nThis exhibition reflects primarily on the persistence of certain symbols\, such as the Palestinian flag\, in the work of Palestinian artists. Reducing the colour palette as a gesture encouraged Salameh to revisit an act similar to that of other Palestinian artists before her\, as an act of reclamation. It revealed how\, even with the passing of time\, these visual elements have remained charged with urgency and continue to inhabit the thoughts and practices of Palestinian artists. \nTo 9 November.

SUMMARY:Game. Set. Match.
DESCRIPTION:The second day of performances for this new Tall Tales / Cross Bronx Studio production It has been adapted from the 2016 Italian film Perfect Strangers\, itself a critical and commercial success that has resonated with audiences around the world and generated a number of remakes and reworkings; for this production\, writer Sid Abbas has switched the locale to Dubai’s tennis scene. \nThere are shows at 3pm and 7.30pm\, with a final performance at 7.30pm on 14 September.

SUMMARY:Every Brilliant Thing
DESCRIPTION:A second night for this single-hander written by the English playwright/director Duncan Macmillan with actor/writer/comedian Johnny Donahoe\, The Guardian called the original Edinburgh Festival production “one of the funniest plays you’ll ever see about depression – and possibly one of the funniest plays you’ll ever see\, full stop”. The Junction’s main man Gautam Goenka directs and performs; the play manages to be both intimate and interactive\, a touching\, funny\, and uplifting play that chronicles life’s small joys and reveals the lengths to which we will go for those we love. Highly recommended. \nThere’s a final performance on 14 September. \n

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Naeemeh Kazemi: Bubble Land
DESCRIPTION:A solo show for an artist whose distinctive approach to visual storytelling lies in her ability to blend hyperrealism with dreamlike distortion. In this series\, a follow-on from her gorgeous but unsettling La La Land works\, her paintings transform the sea into a metaphor for modern existence where joy and anxiety coexist\, and spectacle conceals fragility\, turning the ocean into a theatrical\, disorienting place filled with bioluminescent creatures\, clown-like figures\, and confetti-like bubbles; every detail serves as a fragment of a larger\, immersive universe where beauty and unease intertwine – and where despite the chaos there is a space to pause\, reflect\, and immerse in a universe that resists simplification.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Morteza Khazaie: Upside Down
DESCRIPTION:Khazaie’s solo show is inspired by nature\, particularly by trees that bend in the face of wind and storms yet do not break. These symbolise resilience and flexibility; just as in life\, people too change under pressure and harsh conditions\, being guided towards new paths. The artist’s craftsmanship and thoughtful use of wood create pieces that are both grounded and transformative\, resonating with the themes of survival\, adaptation\, and silent strength. As curator Farshad Mahoutforoush writes; “Trees that yield in storms\, yet continue to grow\, became a metaphor for how we as humans navigate change. This exhibition is my reflection on the ways we adapt\, redirect\, and find new shapes for ourselves under pressure … Through these works\, I wanted to explore how softness can be strength\, and how being ‘upside down’ might simply mean seeing things differently”.

SUMMARY:Hester Street: dir Joan Micklin Silver (1975)
DESCRIPTION:Carol Kane is extraordinary as a Jewish immigrant arriving in late 19th-century New York with her young son Yossele (Paul Freedman) to join a husband (Steven Keach) who she hasn’t seen in three years. He’s embraced the new world and regards his wife as a throwback to a culture that he desperately wants to forget; she finds it hard to adapt to the new life\, too attached to the traditions of her former community to envelop herself fully in New York’s modernity. It could’ve been gloomy\, the underbelly f the Gilded Age\, but in fact it’s an entertaining and humorous film that earned Kane an Oscar nomination.

SUMMARY:Marwan Bassiouni: New Western Views (Preview)
DESCRIPTION:This first solo exhibition in the region for Bassiouni offers a first look at an ongoing international project that reframes landscape photography through the lens of lived Muslim presence in the contemporary West. Each of these photographs – taken from inside mosques across the Netherlands\, Switzerland\, and the UK – centres on a window\, an aperture on to the outside world that is rarely found in purpose-built mosques. Through them we glimpse familiar Western landscapes: traffic junctions\, supermarkets\, apartment blocks\, sports fields. But these views are framed by examples of Islamic visual culture – patterned tiles\, rugs\, wooden minbars\, and more. \nNew Western Views is a counterpoint to a long history of Orientalist image-making. Bassiouni’s landscapes are no longer the backdrop for conquest\, curiosity\, or romanticisation; they are simply what exists outside the mosque window. In doing so\, the work avoids the familiar tropes of victimhood or spectacle … \nTo 5 November. \nAbove: Marwan Bassiouni\, New British Views #06\, England (2021)
