SUMMARY:Cie Hervé Koubi: Sol Invictus
DESCRIPTION:The new NYUAD Arts Center season opens with a spectacular new show from the returning Compagnie Hervé Koubi. Koubi is building a reputation for stunning choreography that blends contemporary dance and kinetic urban moves; this piece features no fewer than 17 male and female dancers who perform as a cohesive unit\, emphasising collective responsibility and personal accountability that celebrates the unifying power of dance in a turbulent world. When this show premiered in New York earlier this year the New York Times called it “thrilling … amazing … the dancers’ extraordinary moves are integrated into a poetic vision … the distinctive aesthetic achievement of this company is to make those extraordinary acrobatics and hip-hop power moves feel at times pedestrian\, almost like walking”. \nVery highly recommended\, especially at The Arts Center’s ticket prices; there’s a second performance tomorrow (6 September) \nSol Invictus is presented with the support of Dance Reflections by Van Cleef & Arpels.

SUMMARY:Mamma Roma: dir Pier Paolo Pasolini (1962)
DESCRIPTION:Pasolini’s audacious second feature is a tale of doomed maternal love set against a stark backdrop of ancient ruins and prefab apartment blocks on the desolate outskirts of Rome. Anna Magnani is superb as a middle-aged streetwalker who attempts to extricate herself from her sordid past and provide a decent life for her teenage son; the criminal underworld she thought she had escaped slowly returns to haunt her … Highlighting Pasolini’s lifelong fascination with the marginalised and dispossessed\, Mamma Roma offers an unflinching\, neorealistic look at the struggle for survival in postwar Italy. \nIn Italian with English subtitles.

SUMMARY:Ayesha Sultana: Fragility and Resilience
DESCRIPTION:The first major solo show in the GCC for the Bangladesh-born US-based artist. Her practice spans drawing\, painting and sculpture\, “exploring the material and conceptual possibilities of form and medium … Sultana proposes that fragility can be a form of strength while encompassing profound vulnerability. This thematic exploration is particularly pertinent in the contemporary world as social\, ecological and personal upheavals continually test the limits of sustainability”. \nThe exhibition has new oil paintings\, watercolours on Japanese silk tissue\, works on clay-coated paper\, hand-blown glass sculptures\, and some past photographic explorations. Interestingly\, there’s also a hint of the creative process through the inclusion of sketchbooks\, diaries\, in-progress artworks and an unfinished video. This kind of soul-baring is all too rare in conventional gallery shows; sometimes it can get in the way of the works themselves\, but obviously there will be occasions when the artist (and/or the gallerist) understands that it might provide additional insights. As the blurb puts it\, these additions “reveal the meticulous planning\, experimentation and emotional investment underlying each finished piece\, highlighting the fragility and resilience inherent in all creative acts … The exhibition reflects the fluidity and openness that characterise Sultana’s approach to art\, allowing viewers to witness the raw\, unpolished stages of her creative journey”. \nTo 7 December. \nAbove: Ayesha Sultana\, Inhabiting Our Bodies (2024). SUMMARY:Cirque Dreams: Elysion
DESCRIPTION:“A breathtaking journey through a land of pure imagination and wonder … an extraordinary adventure into a world of fantasy and awe” promises the blurb\, adding “the audience is transported to an ethereal garden atmosphere\, alive with animated creatures that embody the tranquillity and chaos of nature”. \nIf you think the description of the show – a “vivid\, three-dimensional world is filled with astonishing acrobatics\, captivating choreography\, and beautiful costumes” – sounds like Cirque du Soleil\, you’d be right; although started independently\, Cirque Dreams was acquired by Cirque du Soleil’s owners in 2018 and runs as a kind of junior operation. Its shows are still spectacular demonstrations of modern circus arts and high-tech staging (especially lighting)\, but they tend to be smaller and perhaps less pretentious than the parent company’s productions. \nThe current show apparently draws inspiration from the concept of Elysium\, “a place of perfect happiness and eternal peace” – in Greek mythology it was the paradise where heroes went if the gods had conferred immortality of them. In the Cirque Dreams interpretation with the adapted name it’s rather different\, a garden setting “where every creature\, from the tiniest insect to the grandest display\, contributes to the tapestry of life … The fusion of an immersive production design\, other-worldly costume designs\, and the unparalleled skill of our performers brings this blissful garden to life”. \nThe lustre have gone from the ‘new circus’ idea\, and it’s unlikely that Elysion will “redefine the boundaries of circus artistry and theatricality” as the press release suggests; but it should still make for a decent evening’s entertainment – especially with tickets starting at a modest AED 75. \nThere are two shows a day at 3pm and 6.30pm in a purpose built tent in Al Ain Square\, right by Hazza Bin Zayed Stadium. The last two dates are … \n7 September 3pm and 6.30pm\n8 September 3pm and 6.30pm

DESCRIPTION:The British-Emirati singer-songwriter (and occasional filmmaker) Layla Kaylif celebrates the 25th anniversary of her hit single Shakespeare in Love with this one-night-only gig. (Hopefully it will include her very cool Arabic version of Hallelujah as well.) Joining her will be DJ Ramzy Shaar\, a staple in Dubai’s music scene. SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE backbone
DESCRIPTION:studio salasil has curated this group show of six artists “who engage in risk and interruption within their practices”\, structuring the exhibition around the effective concept of the backbone – “a central\, internal structure of strength that binds and connects things together\, embodying our internal worlds and expanded senses of function and feeling. The metaphorical meaning is similar to the figurative translation of the word\, سند in Arabic\, which refers to someone who has your back. Through the interrogation of the word\, backbone explores the complexities and fragilities of these structures which at times can be exposed\, excavated or elusive …” \nThe artists: \nNour Malas\nMalik Thomas Jalil Kydd\nKaïs Dhifi\nAlia Hamaoui\nJana Ghalayini\nAudrey Large & Théophil Blande \nThis should be an interesting show\, if studio salasil’s ambitions and past work are any guide. Describing itself as “a future-focusing curatorial studio tending to care\, research and experimentation”\, salasil also did the rather good Crystal Clear show at Bayt Al Mamzar last year.

SUMMARY:Emily Karaka: Ka Awatea\, A New Dawn
DESCRIPTION:A survey of the work and practice of Emily Karaka. A largely self-taught painter\, she is an abstract expressionist\, a colourist and (occasionally) an assemblage artist. Her work is personal\, passionate and anchored in the politics of the culture clash within Aotearoa New Zealand\, as well as the legacy of colonialism and its ongoing impact on Māori people and culture. Ka Awatea\, A New Dawn\, the first major exhibition of the artist’s oeuvre\, brings together a selection sampled from her 47-year career alongside new work commissioned by Sharjah Art Foundation. \nThe exhibition is curated by Hoor Al Qasimi\, Director of Sharjah Art Foundation\, and Megan Tamati-Quennell\, co-curator of Sharjah Biennial 16\, with Amal Alkhaja\, Assistant Curator at the Foundation. \nTo 1 December.

SUMMARY:Bouchra Khalili: Between Circles and Constellations
DESCRIPTION:Amplifying the voices of migrant and disenfranchised communities\, Khalili makes manifest micro-histories erased by the nation-state. Featuring a selection of her most significant projects over the last two decades\, including the regional premiere of The Public Storyteller (2024)\, the exhibition highlights the need to document stories of collective emancipation and advocates for what the artist calls ‘radical citizenship’. \nOrganised by Sharjah Art Foundation and Barcelona’s MACBA (where it was first seen in 2023) this presentation of the exhibition is curated by Hoor Al Qasimi\, Director of Sharjah Art Foundation\, with Amal Al Ali and Meera Madhu\, curatorial assistants at the Foundation. \nTo 1 December.

SUMMARY:Ghizlane Agzenaï: Kaleidoscope
DESCRIPTION:The Moroccan artist’s debut Middle East exhibition is described by the gallery as “a milestone event that offers a unique opportunity to experience Agzenaï’s vibrant and dynamic art in person”. On show is a collection of Agzenaï’s signature totems and geometric abstractions\, crafted to blur the boundaries of reality blur – “every line\, angle\, and hue in Agzenaï’s work serves as a gateway to a deeper understanding of the self and the world around us”. Hyperbole aside\, her colourful assemblies of geometrical areas and abstract lines owes something to street art\, something to postmodern abstraction\, maybe even something to Bridget Riley; they’re bold\, outspoken\, entertaining works.
\nThere are performances at 3pm and 6.30pm.

DESCRIPTION:Yoon’s confident debut feature picked up numerous nominations and awards both in his native South Korea and abroad. An award-winning coming of age tale\, with simple\, unadorned storytelling that immerses us in the world of two primary school girls. SUMMARY:Nataly Aukar
DESCRIPTION:Lebanese-born and raised\, NYC based\, combining sharp city wit with anecdotes of a strict upbringing amid a civil war\, described by her mum as “really pretty when she makes an effort” and by her friends as “great when you get to know her”\, Nataly Aukur has gigged regularly in New York comedy clubs and has opened for several big(ger)-name standups. She’s done a few shows in Dubai (“I think I definitely startled the crowd in Dubai a little bit”) but we think this is her first tour as the headliner. SUMMARY:The 7 Sins
DESCRIPTION:Last chance to see this series of Dubai-set playlets. They are written by three Dubai-based playwrights (Dee Gee\, Edwige Narbey\, Alex Broun) and directed by Dee Gee; cast and crew are drawn from 11 different nationalities – which is about as Dubai as you could get. The sins aren’t explicitly deadly\, but we are getting a modern take on them – with the emphasis on social media. The underlying idea is that vices like these can evolve with time; “as an audience\, we will experience the sins in today’s world and how our daily lives invite us to sin\, perhaps not always in our control …”. \n

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Timur D’Vatz: Arcadian Dreams
DESCRIPTION:A summer-long exhibition of work from one of the gallery’s stalwarts\, Timur D’Vatz\, featuring his signature mix of stylised figures and symbolic settings that owe something to mediaeval European tapestry\, something to Byzantine decoration. The title refers to the dawn of an early mythology\, located in a primeval forest\, manifested through magical flora and fantastic beasts; “there are starry skies and gleaming comets guiding both travellers and wild animals to the source of life\, which appears in the form of a Fountain or a Magical Flower. This is the focal point from where life and knowledge originate …”

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Always Growing
DESCRIPTION:Subtitled “look into the history of contemporary digital art in China” and curated by Jing She\, this exhibition features works from 10 artists or collectives from the contemporary digital art scene in China that showcase AI\, generative art\, 3D imaging\, gaming\, mixed reality\, somatosensory interaction\, computer programming composition and live coding. Says the blurb: “The use of technology in art creation goes beyond merely displaying technological prowess; the exhibited artists\, like Pao Ding in Chuang Tzu’s Essentials for Nourishing Life\, use technology to deeply explore and interpret the complexities of human society and culture\, finding new avenues for expression … These works aim to immerse the audience in an embodied experience that has no boundaries between virtuality and reality\, conveying distinctive Eastern aesthetics”. \nThe show also includes a presentation from the Research Center for Digital Humanities at Renmin University of China. \nThe artists: Baoyang Chen\, Dabeiyuzhou\, Fn Media Lab\, Zixuan Nian top)\, Raven Kwok (below)\, Uchan Sun\, Xiaolei Tian\, Changcun Wang\, Yicai Wang\, Mr. D. SUMMARY:I Wish To Be Happy\, I Want To Be Yellow
DESCRIPTION:A group show for an eclectic collection of artists — Mohammad Alfaraj\, Aminah Al huqail\, Dalia Baassiri\, Richi Bhatia\, Jumairy\, Tamara Kalo\, Adrian Pepe\, and Alia Zaal. The common factor is that they “cultivate a visceral and intimate relationship with nature” and “blur temporal boundaries between presence and absence\, fullness and lack\, past and present\, engaging in generative rites that foster creation\, fertility\, and renewal … Bodies morph\, adapt\, and redefine themselves\, existing in states of transition and transformation … They embody the power of attraction and interaction\, functioning as entities that react and interact with their surroundings”. \nFighting though the thickets of verbiage\, this looks like it could be a top show for the new season: the participants are all interesting\, provocative artists with something to say and novel ways of saying it. \nTo 28 October. \nAbove: Richi Bhatia\, Assemblage Bed One (2014-24\, detail) Below: Tamara Kalo\, Olive Leaves Memories (2024)

SUMMARY:Mouza Al Hamrani: Homepage
DESCRIPTION:The first solo show by the Emirati illustrator and multimedia designer reflects the duality of the digital age — “celebrating the opportunities the internet has provided\, while also expressing the exhaustion and apprehension that come with a prolonged digital presence. \n“I aimed to capture this nuanced experience\, inviting viewers to reflect on their own relationship with the digital world. It’s a portrait of my own experience of the internet in this region during my formative years\, all the way to the current day.” \nMouza Al Hamrani is one of only four UAE-based artists to be accepted for Tashkeel’s popular Critical Practice Programme last year and worked with a mentor to produce a series of artworks that blend of traditional illustration and cutting-edge digital artistry. \nThe exhibition will be accompanied by artist-led tours and talks on 29 September and 13 October. \nTo 15 October. \n

SUMMARY:Rouge | Red Soil: dir Farid Bentoumi (2020)
DESCRIPTION:An occupational nurse in a chemical plant turns whistleblower over toxic discharges but has to balance fighting for the truth against the risk of alienating her entire family – many of whom work for the giant chemical works\, an ominous yet unavoidable presence that dominates their modest French town. \nThe result could be a goodies-vs-baddies thriller\, or (perhaps worse) a dogmatic dissertation on environmental advocacy; in fact it’s neither – yes\, there are (eco)thriller elements\, but the personal issues make it a rich study in real life. The whistleblower’s struggles for justice aren’t just with the company; she also has to face opposition from her father\, who has absolute faith in the corporation as a crucial job provider for the community. \nAs the review says\, it’s a “tense and timely thriller”. That’s helped in no small part by the quality of the acting (Zita Hanrot as the nurse\, Sami Bouajila as her father\, Céline Sallette as a committed journalist with a dark side). Also relevant: it’s based on a real incident (in Hungary\, as it happens\, but the same process is widely used around the world with the same dangers). \n \nThe film screens in the NAAS programme under the umbrella title Green Reel: Films for a Sustainable Future\, featuring independent films from around the world that focus on the environment and sustainability. NAAS is a collaboration between a number of cultural institutions in the UAE: the Goethe-Institut Gulf Region\, the Embassies of France in the United Arab Emirates\, the Embassy of Canada to the United Arab Emirates\, the Italian Cultural Institute of Abu Dhabi\, the Embassy of Switzerland to the United Arab Emirates and the Kingdom of Bahrain\, and Alliance Française Dubai. \nNAAS: Green Reel runs from 10 September to 26 November at Alliance Française Dubai. The screenings are all free and subtitled in English. \nUpcoming: (click the title for the link) \n24 September Ökozid | Ecocide dir Andres Veiel (2020)\n8 October Siccità | Dry dir Paolo Virzì (2022)\n22 October Animal dir Cyril Dion (2021)\n5 November Taste the Waste dir Valentin Thurn (2011)\n12 November More than Honey dir Markus Imhoof (2012)\n19 November Hadwin’s Judgement dir Sasha Snow (2015)\n26 November Dans la brume | Just a Breath Away dir Daniel Roby (2018)

SUMMARY:Putting the Record Straight: The Lost Women of Art History
DESCRIPTION:A seven-part lecture series by art historian Rose Balston on female artists from the 16th through to the 18th century – “women who have not only been side-lined\, but literally (and shockingly) blocked out of history”\, mainly by the (male) custodians of 19th-century art history. The talks run every other Wednesday to 4 December from 11am to 12.30pm; individual sessions are AED 250 per person\, but there’s a deal for all seven at AED 1\,650. \nThe schedule: \n11 Sept Blazing the Trail: Sofonisba Anguissola\nIn the 16th century\, Sofonisba Anguissola painted her way out of domesticity to unprecedented fame\, earning accolades from (among others) Michelangelo and Van Dyck. \n25 Sept The Secret Renaissance: The Women of Bologna\nThe female artists of 16th and 17th century Bologna flourished in this city and became part of its cultural identity. \n9 Oct Artemisia Gentileschi: Art and Power\nThe most famous of all female artists from this period\, Artemisia secured her place among the Baroque masters with astonishing paintings that powerfully reflect her personal struggles and cultural triumphs. \n23 Oct Women who Shaped the Dutch Golden Age: Legacy Reclaimed\nExplore the Dutch Golden Age through the lens of groundbreaking female artists who often outshone their male counterparts. \n6 Nov Rococo Rock Star: Rosalba Carriera\nCarriera was a canny businesswoman who revolutionised pastel painting\, captivated the Grand Tour elite\, and became an international cultural celebrity. \n20 Nov In the Court of Versailles: Élisabeth Vigée-Lebrun & Adélaïde Labille-Guiard\nCreating sensational portraits of their royal patrons\, the two top female painters in pre-Revolutionary France had nothing to be rivals about except that they both existed in a world not intended for them. \n4 Dec Angelica Kauffman: Prodigy\, Pioneer\nAngelica Kauffman\, a founding member of the Royal Academy\, achieved international renown as both a portrait and history painter. Why then has she been sidelined in art history?

SUMMARY:Wednesday Night Impro: Maestro
DESCRIPTION:The Courtyard’s regular evening of elimination improv. Ten actors converge for a night of scenes\, songs and games based on audience suggestions. DESCRIPTION:The longest running American musical in Broadway history – and “the most exciting musical of its generation” (The Times) – is coming to Yas for a decent run from 12-22 September 2024. \nFirst seen in 1975 and still an all-round stunner\, it is based on a 1926 play by one-time reporter Maurine Dallas Watkins and is built around actual crimes on which she reported; the book by Fred Ebb and Bob Fosse paints a tantalising tale of passion\, murder\, greed\, betrayal\, and redemption through the journey of two fiercely competitive women – aspiring jazz performer Roxie Hart and former vaudevillian (and double-murderess) Velma Kelly. John Kander and Fred Ebb were responsible for the score\, with each song modelled on a traditional vaudeville number or a vaudeville performer – a format that helped to make explicit the show’s comparison between justice\, showbiz\, and contemporary society. \nThis production is basically the 1996 Broadway revival\, which has been touring around the world more or less ever since. It is produced by Barry and Fran Weissler and choreographed by Tony Award winner Ann Reinking very much in the style of Bob Fosse. Direction is by another Tony Award winner\, Walter Bobbie. \nPerformances: \n12 September 7pm \n13 September 7pm \n14 September 1pm\n14 September 7pm \n15 September 1pm\n15 September 6pm \n16 September no performance\n17 September no performance\n18 September no performance \n19 September 7pm \n20 September 7pm \n21 September 1pm\n21 September 7pm \n22 September 1pm\n22 September 6pm \nThere are the door-open times; we’d guess the actual performances start an hour later. Ticket prices are higher for weekend shows
