SUMMARY:Fridge Concert Series 41: Ghaliaa / Mira Habash
DESCRIPTION:Multi-instrumentalist singer-songwriter Ghaliaa should be able to make the most of the revamped Fridge venue with its redesigned stage and new state of the art sound system. Ghaliaa’s sound fuses RnB\, hiphop\, electropop\, indie and jazz\, all characterised by what The Frdige calls “a raspy voice and versatile highs” – she’s better than that\, in fact. Opening for Ghaliaa is Mira Habash whose mix of acapella\, pop and jazz styles have delivered three Levantine Arabic singles with more than five million streams.

SUMMARY:A Utopian Stage: Excavated Archives: Festival of Arts\, Shiraz-Persepolis
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition describes an open-ended\, evolving project that “explores how in the aftermath of the collapse of European hegemonies and the rise of the Global South a fluid artistic exchange was possible across geographies\, histories and forms in ways and on a scale that had never been possible before”. \nThe Festival of Arts was held around Shiraz every summer from 1967 to 1977; the ancient Persian ruins of Persepolis were a spectacular backdrop for what has been described as “one of the most adventurous and idiosyncratic festivals in the world” and “perhaps the most radical commissioning festival in history”\, a melting pot of traditional and avant-garde music\, theatre and performance. The festival\, which came to an end with the Iranian revolution\, featured artists from both East and West. \nThis exhibition includes archive film and photographs\, original theatre programmes and posters\, and the gallery describes the overall project as a “reconstruction of a complex space of international modernity … defined by the ‘third worldist’ sensibilities of the immediate post-colonial period”. The project examines how Shiraz-Persepolis acted as a contested site of competing solidarities and proliferating visions of an interconnected world; and how\, importantly\, it facilitated the encounter between international and local avant-gardes. “It is precisely the festival’s pronounced rejection of a tension-less\, homogenising fusion of cultures\, and its alignment with the principles of particularism\, cultural difference\, and alterity that demand our attention today.” \nTo 4 November.

SUMMARY:Samuel Olayombo: Lotus Bloom Ranchers
DESCRIPTION:“I cross the boundaries of traditional masculinity\, macho culture\, societal gender assertions and associations\,” says Samuel Olayombo\, who works with oils\, acrylics\, charcoal and pastels to create vibrant and large-scale canvases of predominately male but non-gender normative portraits. Using a palette knife to convey intricate 3D skin textures\, he pays homage to classic artists from Van Gogh and Arja Valimaki to El Dragg Okwoju and Barkley Hendricks; and he prefers to use traditionally ‘female’ colours\, like rose and pastel pinks\, to depict seemingly brute masculine subjects: “For me\, regardless of gender\, we are all equal and this is the major reason why I employ the colour pink in my paintings. I want to correct the notion that pink is feminine … I envision my portraits as an effort to change representations of masculinity\, and shift ideas on what it means to be a man.” \nTo 11 November.

SUMMARY:Fereydoun Ave: A Mini-Retrospective
DESCRIPTION:Tehran’s Dastan Gallery has worked with Fereydoun Ave since its establishment and has been part of many of his projects. In this exhibition\, Dastan seeks to present a glimpse into the diverse and multidimensional world and practice of the artist. \nIt makes a nice counterpoint to the major show currently at the Jameel\, which focuses on Fereydoun Ave as collector: this one looks at the man as artist. It shows a selection of works from Fereydoun Ave created over five decades\, reviewing his prolific life and expansive artistic practice. Over that time he has taken on many roles as an artist\, designer\, art director\, collector\, curator\, gallerist\, and art patron. Fereydoun Ave’s joint projects with artists\, galleries\, and institutions are an integral part of his practice. \n“Fereydoun Ave belongs to the dancers among artists – crossing cultural boundaries and mastering life with a lightness of being\, intuition and\, at times\, an element of calculation\,” writes Peter Fischer in Fereydoun Ave – Shah Abbas and his Page Boy (2016). “Ave strives to comprehend and make visible what he experiences by thinking in broad complexes of interrelated dimensions. \nTo 30 October. \nAbove: Fereydoun Ave\, Postcard from Iranestan\, Khalij Fars (2013)

SUMMARY:Connecting Worlds: Acoustic Ocean & Forest Mind Film Screenings with Ursula Biemann
DESCRIPTION:Two short films by the Norwegian director Ursula Biemann that explore the profound connections of indigenous communities to their natural environments. Screenings will be followed by a Q&A with Biemann. \nAcoustic Ocean (2018\, 18 mins) is a poetic invitation to contemplate the ocean’s hidden symphony off the Arctic islands of Lofoten. Through a science-fictional lens\, Ursula Biemann unveils the intricate tapestry that binds life beneath the waves replete with nascent life forms\, imaginative interconnections\, and the evolution of the planetary ecosystem. \nForest Mind (2021\, 31 mins) unveils an intricate narrative woven in collaboration with the Inga community of the Amazonian forests of southern Colombia. Biemann’s longstanding relationship with these people gives rise to an indigenous university\, a testament to indigenous wisdom. Rooted in both scientific and shamanic perspectives\, Forest Mind champions an eco-centric world view\, bridging the realms of empirical knowledge and ancient wisdom.

SUMMARY:Emmie McLuskey: Creative Practices and Curation in Sound Art
DESCRIPTION:Glasgow-based Emmie McLuskey works with sculpture\, print\, sound and performance to explore the physical embodiment of communication with a particular focus on systems of learning. McLuskey works across the roles of artist\, programmer\, writer and educator. She sees these as completely interlinked and inseparable from each other\, these multiple expressions\, regardless of form\, all come from a desire to communicate and process the nuance and complexity of our world alongside others. Collaboration is central to her work\, starting with a shared question or observation that she explores more deeply through practice; this has previously taken the form of publications\, events\, objects\, conversations and exhibitions; recent works have centred around interactions in and between bodies\, considering the systems that control and record them. This Sharjah Art Foundation talk outlines her approach and practice.

SUMMARY:Koyaanisqatsi Live
DESCRIPTION:Godfrey Reggio’s groundbreaking 1982 film Koyaanisqatsi set to an influential score by Philip Glass (his first major film success) and performed live by the Philip Glass Ensemble. Taking its title from a Hopi word meaning “life out of balance\,” Koyaanisqatsi is a hypnotic exploration of nature and urbanisation; the footage of natural landscapes and elemental forces paints an apocalyptic vision of the collision of two worlds. The visual tone poem contains neither dialogue nor a conventional plot\, its tone being set by the juxtaposition of images and music. The stunning visuals and an impressive score from Philip Glass make this a must-see – especially with the music played live.

SUMMARY:Festival X
DESCRIPTION:This is the second edition of a festival that described itself as “the point of intersection between art\, technology and the community … The main goal is to attract and create a community of open minded artists\, scientists\, and tech experts to come together and share knowledge”. It also aims to promote an alternative to “the ‘entertainment-only’ lifestyle in Dubai”. \nThat was for the original festival\, which ran back in 2022 with some success. The upcoming version tomes down the rhetoric somewhat but retains a strapline of ‘arts / technology / science’ and adds an overlay of community. The UAE is seen as “a special ecosystem in which people and their culture\, tools\, and relationship with nature form a special alliance … This raises the question of how this complex life situation can be artistically reflected and what artistic forms of expression and tools can emerge from it … The contemporary form of media art\, which engages with a society shaped by new technologies and the associated risks and opportunities\, is presented …” \nThe organisers say their goal is to promote a local artistic community through this future-oriented art form” “inspired by the dynamics of the region’s unique circumstances\, a distinct dialectic of media art will emerge”. \nSounds impressive\, and at the very least Festival X should stimulate thought if not action. It runs for three days in Alserkal Avenue\, with Exhibitions of curated installations and projects with the title  ‘From the past we love\, to the future we need’ in Alserkal Avenue’s Concrete and Warehouse 46; a couple of Workshops; Performances in the evening on all three days; and a short programme of panel discussions. \nThe workshops are by new media artist Amir Bastan (“An Astrolabe for Computational Arts”\, 10am on all three days) and James Kelly from NYUAD (active sound researcher/performer\, vinyl enthusiast\, and responsible for the interesting Phonography show back in February; his workshop is repeated on two days only). The performance schedule also looks interesting – they include a total of five sessions by James Kelly again\, immersive AV installations from Italian artist Michela Pelusio\, soundscapes by Safeya Alblooshi from NYUAD\, and the very cool Sahar Homami who creates real-time visual content “at the intersection of art\, technology\, philosophy\, and mysticism”. \nThe panels and presentations look to be more of a mixed bag\, with a Keynote session on two days followed by a panel. The keynotes are two hours of bite-size contributions from individuals and organisations apparently without a specific theme\, and they range from educational institutions like DIDI\, VCUarts Qatar\, and NYUAD through local business-oriented organisations like PwC Middle East and Dubai Economy & Tourism to thought leaders Ars Electronica and Alserkal Avenue (the original inspiration for Festival X does apparently come largely from Ars Electronica\, an Austrian new media art institute which also runs a similar “festival for art\, technology and society“). \nThat leaves two panels\, both of which seem to us to be a little underserved timewise and slightly baffling in their choice of subject. There’s only 45 minutes for the first\, ‘How to Create a Connection Between Tradition\, Innovation and Vision’ with which has contributions from Ars Electronica\, Alserkal Avenue\, Dubai Future Foundation\, Dubai Department of Economy & Tourism Dubai\, and PwC MiddleEast. The moderator is Olof Van Winden\, Founder and Director of TodaysArt Festival (maybe we’ll get to hear whether the Festival will be returning in its original format). And on the final day there’s what looks like another meaty topic with only an hour allowed for it; we think the subject is ‘The University Portal: Fast Forward To The Future And Back’\, which makes sense given that the panellists come from all those educational bodies (with Amir Bastan as moderator)\, but elsewhere in the website it’s listed as ‘How Media Artists Can Shape the Future’. \nThe best news is that it’s all free\, though you do have to pre-register for individual sessions presumably to give the organisers a chance to manage numbers. \n

SUMMARY:Creative Careers Days
DESCRIPTION:The Jameel’s annual festival devoted to helping the young explore a possible future in the arts is pitched at “all high school and university students\, teachers\, developing professionals and creatively minded youth in the UAE”. Day one is aimed at everyone – individuals but also families and teachers – while the second and thirds days (9 and 10 Oct) are group visits by school and universities only. \nThis second iteration of Creative Careers Days carries the title You Can’t Have Art Without … and aims to showcase “the multiple roles that can contribute to the growth of the arts ecosystem”. The intention is to show how interests and specialisations from outside the arts/creative bubble can be relevant; so topics like business\, accounting and law to humanities\, social studies and languages will be demonstrated to have a place in the creative industries. \nStudents are invited to join career surgery sessions to receive expert advice and guidance on navigating the creative industries. An additional multimedia research zone features behind-the-scenes videos and resources\, while the Jameel Library displays a special range of resources on pedagogy and arts education for both students and teachers. Jameel Arts Centre itself is activated fully throughout the event: in the Lobby\, visitors are invited to join career consultation sessions and receive expert advice on navigating the creative industries. Meanwhile the first floor gallery spaces will be taken over by 30 or so booths from arts organisations and universities from the UAE “and beyond”; and the Jameel Library features a special range of resources on pedagogy and arts education for faculty and education professionals. There’s a programme of inspirational talks\, informational workshops\, portfolio reviews\, one-to-one sessions and tours runs throughout the fair\, plus food stalls\, music and entertainment for all … \nIt’s free\, but preregistration is recommended via this link. (School and university groups should register here.)

SUMMARY:Matilda The Musical
DESCRIPTION:The multi-award-winning musical (it has won more than 99 international awards) inspired by the Roald Dahl book touches down in Dubai for an eight-day run that has to be one of the highlights of the season. As the New York Post put it\, “Once in a blue moon\, a show comes out blazing and restores your faith in broadway. Matilda the Musical is that show”. \nThe script by Tony Award-winning playwright Dennis Kelly is excellent\, sticking close enough to the original but making the most of the live-action theatricality of the stage; Tim Minchin’s original songs are terrific\, mixing wit with sing-along choruses. And it’s a Royal Shakespeare Company production\, which is itself an assurance of quality and professionalism. The premium ticket price should be worth it … \nMatilda The Musical is directed by Matthew Warchus. Sets and costumes are by Rob Howell\, with choreography by Peter Darling. All three are also Tony winners\, along with the lighting director Hugh Vanstone. Matilda the Musical plays daily at 8pm between 10 and 15 October; there are also 2pm matinées on 14 and 15 October.

SUMMARY:Fridge Concert Series 41: Redaround / Ibby Vk
DESCRIPTION:Redaround plays a blend of rock\, pop and Arabic music that isn’t as rare as it once was – “taking inspiration from the melting pot of cultures in Dubai as well as the band’s own tastes and influences\, they fuse Arabic and Western genres in their energetic performances” says the Fridge. But they do have a characteristic style that should set them apart. Support act Ibby Vk shares the revamped venue and much-improved sound system with his Arabic acoustic pop.

DESCRIPTION:Ten actors converge for a night of scenes\, songs and games based on audience suggestions. After each round you score the players on a scale of 1 to 5\, and the one with the lowest score is eliminated. SUMMARY:Natalia Osipova: Force of Nature
DESCRIPTION:Called by The Independent “the most sought-after ballerina in the world”\, Natalia Osipova’s Abu Dhabi Classics show promises a programme of favourite classics and contemporary masterpieces. Her new dance company\, Blooms Dance Project\, which has been running now for a year\, has a twofold goal: to preserve her iconic roles and to create new works through worldwide touring. In practice this means lots of Giselle et al\, and the Dying Swan to finish the evening\, with a company that includes principal dancers from some of the big-name ballet troupes. Earlier this year Osipova performed Force of Nature in New York to generally rapturous reviews\, though one or two suggested the new pieces were a tad disappointing – but then it’s the classics where she made her name\, and it’s the classics that we want to see. \nThe prices are pretty good – the best seats are AED 250\, but you can still get a balcony spot for AED 75 – but this is sure to sell out so get in quickly …

SUMMARY:Laughter Factory: “Menace To Society” Tour
DESCRIPTION:Four more standups\, perhaps a bit more varied than usual and featuring a couple of good local comics on the bill for a change. Dana Alexander (originally from Canada\, now based there and in the UK) tours a lot and has been a hit in Dubai before; her style has been described as “smart\, irreverent and revolutionary” which bodes well. Jimmy Mcghie is another hard-working international tourer\, whose 2017 Edinburgh Festival Fringe show was reviewed in the Scotsman as “one of the most accomplished hours of comedy you will find here this month. Or\, to be honest\, anywhere\, any time …” If loose Women was more outrageous\, Dubai’s very own Bronwyn Byrnes would be a regular – we’re promised “a hilarious journey of life in Dubai”. SUMMARY:Henok Melkamzer
DESCRIPTION:Featuring more than 100 works\, many on view for the first time\, this exhibition is the largest solo presentation of artworks by Ethiopian telsem artist Henok Melkamzer. Traditionally termed as healing or talisman art\, telsem is a sophisticated visual art form that incorporates philosophy and intricate themes and includes various symbols\, drawings and texts imbibed with deeper meanings. Combining ancient inspirations with modern idioms\, Melkamzer’s canvas works reconstruct the conventions of this traditional art form and broaden the understanding of ‘modern’ art through their visual sophistication and complex conceptualisation. \nOrganised in collaboration with The Africa Institute\, Sharjah\, the exhibition is curated by Elizabeth Giorgis\, Associate Professor of Art History\, Theory and Criticism at The Africa Institute. \nTo 10 March.

SUMMARY:Vantage Point Sharjah (VPS 11)
DESCRIPTION:Sharjah Art Foundation’s annual photography exhibition returns for its 11th edition\, featuring artists “whose work challenges established notions of photographic practices” – four individuals and one collective\, chosen through an international open call that received more than 350 applications. \nThis year VPS identifies and supports early-career photographers from Africa and Asia (those who were born there\, who are currently based there\, or who are part of the diaspora). “The selected artists embody diverse approaches but share overlapping tendencies\,” say the organisers\, citing “the pursuit of contemporary image-making techniques\, the recontextualisation of found or inherited images and engagement with the visual afterlives of colonialist legacies”: \n\nOumaima Abaraghe (b.1999\, Casablanca) uses collage techniques and digital manipulation to reconstruct Morocco’s fragmentary colonial archive\, signalling its inherent fallibility\nYashna Kaul (b.1995\, Mumbai) unearths the secrets embedded in her family’s photo album and reveals how the framing of a moment can shape personal histories and collective memory.\nMohamed Mahdy (b.1996\, Giza) uses emotive storytelling to document the displacement of the fishing community of El Maks\, Alexandria\, and captures the generational impact of urban redevelopment policies.\nClea Rekhou (b.1988\, Paris) contrasts a series of soft-lit\, intimate family portraits with narratives of generational violence\, suggesting the complexity of human relationships.\nPostbox Ghana – Nana Ofosu Adjei (b.1993\, Accra)\, Courage Dzidula Kpodo (b.1999\, Kumasi) and Manuela Nebuloni (b.1986\, Milan) – resituate popular postcard images of post-independence Ghana within the country’s contemporary urban landscape and question the aspirations of nation-state imagery.\n\nWorks by these emerging artists will be displayed in two exhibition modes: independent presentations of the artists’ individual practices and a communal storytelling space that interweaves their combined practices. \nVPS 11 also introduces a one-on-one professional mentoring programme. Participating artists will be paired with cultural practitioners or industry professionals of their choice so that they can improve their skills and take advantage of a unique learning experience led by experts in the field. \nThe exhibition is open 9am to 9pm\, Saturday to Thursday\, and 4-9pm on Friday; it runs to 14 January. \nAbove: Oumaima Abaraghe\, History as they present it (2022)

SUMMARY:Cross Cultural Dialogue: From Ancient Script to Contemporary Art
DESCRIPTION:A really interesting panel discussion presented by Museum of the Future as a contribution to Dubai Culture’s ongoing Calligraphy Biennale. The session promises to explore the role of calligraphy across diverse cultures\, local communities\, and heritages\, looking at how it serves as a catalyst for cross-cultural dialogue\, fosters intercultural understanding and paves the way for meaningful collaborations. The discussion will also illuminate the evolution of traditional calligraphy in contemporary art and design. \nThe panel: \n\nVictor Ekpuk artist (above)\nProf Rachel Ama Asaa Engmann Director of Christiansborg Archaeological Heritage Project\, Ghana\nProf Awam Amkpa Dean of Arts and Humanities NYUAD\nAlia Al Shamsi Cultural Programming Manager at Louvre Abu Dhabi\nProf Antoine Abi Aad Assistant Professor in the College of Arts and Creative Enterprises at ZU\n\nRebecca Anne Proctor moderates. \nIt’s free\, but in the Museum’s Auditorium; we think this means you’ll have to pay for general admission (AED 149).
