DESCRIPTION:Writer-director Annika Pinske’s debut feature tells the story of Clara\, a middle-aged college lecturer and doctoral candidate who seems somewhat uncomfortable with her life in Berlin.  That gets put into focus when she pays a weekend visit to her hometown in rural East Germany with her 15-year-old daughter to celebrate her mother 60th birthday; there’s a stark contrast between the pacey\, urban\, moneyed city existence and a folksy\, economically challenged village where life is comparatively simple. The differences in atmosphere and attitudes are palpable. So which of these alternatives is more fulfilling? \nThe film (in German with English subtitles) screens as part of the now-annual NAAS Film Festival\, a collaboration between several international cultural institutions in the UAE that each year it brings independent films to the UAE with socially relevant themes. This year’s is ‘Family Reel: Celebrating the Year of the Family’ – a selection of films that highlight the diversity\, strength\, and significance of familial relationships.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Douglas White: The Great Wave
DESCRIPTION:Throughout his practice\, White approaches sculpture as a kind of material alchemy – discarded substances are reworked forms that appear uncannily animate: industrial debris becomes wave\, tree\, or cosmic surface\, revealing unexpected continuities between natural forces and technological systems. \nTwo sculptures form the centre of the exhibition. In The Great Wave (after Hokusai)\, fragments of torn tyre rubber collected from roadsides around the world gather into a dense\, turbulent crest that rises above the viewer – one of the most recognisable images in art history\, understood as a moment of impending force poised above fragile human lives. And the monumental Black Palm rises through the gallery like an improbable organism\, assembled from lengths of discarded tyre rubber\, its trunk and fronds have presence of a living structure – an artificial tree grown from the residues of global mobility. \nAcross the exhibition White’s works reveal the hidden energies that shape material form. In the Lichtenberg Drawings\, high-voltage electrical discharges burn branching patterns directly into the surface of wood\, creating lightning-like structures that emerge through the interaction of energy and resistance. And the electroformed Black Sun works develop slowly through the accumulation of copper in electrically charged baths\, allowing metallic surfaces to crystallise over time.

DESCRIPTION:As part of its ongoing institutional programming\, Sharjah Architecture Triennial presents what it terms a “new chapter” in a long-term research initiative dedicated to architectural archives in the Arab world. Building on the inaugural 2023 exhibition\, which focused on Beirut\, Cairo and Rabat\, Journeys into Architecture Archives was developed to foster knowledge production about the region from within its own communities\, while contributing to the development of a shared archival database. The project\, again curated by Lebanese architect George Arbid\, brings together rare archival materials\, physical models and newly commissioned documentary films to explore histories\, memories and unrealised futures across three pivotal Arab cities. \nTo mark the opening Arbid will present an online lecture from 3-4pm followed by a panel discussion and Q&A to 5.30pm – panellists include Salma Gharbi (architect and founding member and chair of Docomomo Tunisia)\, Zaid Issam (architect)\, Ahmad Salah (architect and co-founder and director of AMASyria) and Ola Seif (art historian).
