SUMMARY:The Story of Art: The Age of Reason and Revolution – From Academic to Realism
DESCRIPTION:Bassam Freiha Art Foundation continues its monthly lecture series led by Dr Michaela Watrelot\, BFAF Curator and Director of Exhibitions. This time it explores a pivotal moment in art history shaped by political upheaval\, intellectual transformation\, and shifting social ideals in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Featuring the works of Delacroix\, David\, Goya\, and Turner\, the lecture traces the transition from academic tradition to expressive\, emotionally charged\, and socially engaged forms of painting. \n

SUMMARY:Yuyu Zhitong: Serendipity
DESCRIPTION:The debut solo exhibition in the Middle East for the Chinese-born London-based artist\, known for her luscious sweeps of colour and a mordant wit (“Good Girls Go To Heaven\, Cool Girls Go Everywhere”). This show presents a new body of paintings that develops her intuitive yet disciplined approach to abstraction; working without preparatory sketches\, Zhitong allows each composition to emerge through a continuous process of construction and reconfiguration\, guided by trained intuition and attentive perception. Gesture\, rhythm\, and colour operate as structural elements\, shaping works that balance spontaneity with control. \nThe gallery says the exhibition title refers to the ability to recognise meaning within chance encounters: “for Zhitong\, painting becomes a site where intuition meets uncertainty\, and where form and significance emerge through observation rather than intention. Each work captures a moment of alignment between perception\, emotion\, and structure …” \nTo 11 February.

SUMMARY:RUSTING ECHOES
DESCRIPTION:Works by Yoshi (Aisha Al Ali)\, Ammar Al Banna\, Ahmed Al Kuwaiti and Shaikha Al Shamsi. The theme is time as both a material and emotional presence\, expressed through processes of transformation\, memory\, repetition\, and decay – so time not as a measured unit\, but as something felt through texture\, resonance\, and change. “The artists engage in slow\, process-driven methods that register time through touch\, material\, and repetition” and the exhibition “reflects on how time manifests quietly through change\, decay\, and resonance\, revealing both impermanence and continuity in the marks it leaves …” It is curated by art educator and researcher Sarrah Bashir. \nTo 15 February.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Kwang Hyun Kim: Flytrap Anthology
DESCRIPTION:A solo show for the Korean artist reflecting Kim’s belief that we live within a paradox where we can be both predators and shelter for one another. Says the gallery: “despite this contradiction we continue to reach outward\, to connect\, to hope and to build meaning. The exhibition becomes a meditation on the delicate and wilful act of living\, offering an intimate look at how desire\, solitude\, tenderness and contradiction coexist within every human heart …” \nKim’s father worked as a cartoonist\, his mother as an illustrator\, and he trained in traditional Korean painting: it’s no surprise his works are full of imagery\, narrative and symbolism with a strong vein of spiritual iconography and a distinctive visual language. The flytrap recurring in these paintings is a metaphor that suggests the inevitability of wounding each other and the emotional tension between intimacy and self-protection; within this ecosystem Kim places long-standing characters Pipzin (representing intuition and inner clarity) and Gatak (who “moves endlessly between cultivation and desire\, planting and harvesting\, seeking and resisting”). Refined brushwork and layered acrylic surfaces heighten this emotional landscape.

SUMMARY:Jumana Emil Abboud: The Storyteller and the Obedient Tide
DESCRIPTION:Jumana Emil Abboud’s first solo exhibition in the Emirates draws on the lineage of Palestinian folktales and their continued resonance in the present – how stories inhabit landscapes\, shape personal histories and collective memory\, and create an enchanted relationship to the landscape. \nThe works in this show are like traces and fragments left by the tide’s ebb and flow; “they drift across time and geography\, fact and mythology\, and are grounded in the context of the Palestinian struggle for liberation and return” says the gallery. “Mirroring the exhibition’s title\, the tide’s devotion to the moon’s pull and the storyteller’s slow telling prompt the central question of the exhibition: how do we carry light\, across oceans\, across ruins\, across silence\, without letting it be extinguished?” \nCurated by Indranjan Banerjee. To June 28. \nAbove: Jumana Emil Abboud\, Our Other Half (detail\, 2024-2025)

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Besher Koushaji: Moments of Hope
DESCRIPTION:Koushaji’s exhibitions continues his exploration of memory\, resilience\, and the human condition with a new body of work that “reflects on a world shaped by displacement\, conflict\, and uncertainty\, yet illuminated by fleeting moments of beauty and strength”. His signature is a richly layered canvas through which Koushaji weaves symbols of cultural memory such as lemons\, pomegranates\, and flowers as metaphors of endurance and renewal; at the heart of his compositions stands the figure of the woman\, embodying continuity\, tenderness\, and quiet power.

SUMMARY:Tamerlano
DESCRIPTION:The second performance of this spectacular “reimagining” of Handle’s opera by the flamboyant director and designer Stefano Poda. It blends Handel’s score with “a new musical concept” by composer Kirill Richter that weaves in traditional Uzbek instruments.  The sets feature monumental structures inspired by Timurid architecture\, kinetic installations\, and immersive lighting; and Poda has assembled more than 160 artists — singers\, ballet dancers\, the National Symphony Orchestra of Uzbekistan\, the State Choir\, and a number of national ensembles — to create a world of music\, movement\, and visual poetry. The scale\, ambition and expense are all impressive; as the blurb has it\, “Dubai has never witnessed an operatic production of this magnitude”. \n

DESCRIPTION:Historian and author Frauke Heard-Bey joins scholar Meitha Almazrooei to discuss the long arc of writing and archiving history. Heard-Bey’s landmark publication From Trucial States to United Arab Emirates\, first published in 1982\, is an essential source for anyone interested in the development of the country; its author is a thoughtful and inspiring speaker on the subject of the role of documentation and the historical record. This should be a fascinating conversation about attending to the past in the present moment. \nThis is a public event associated with the Jameel’s Night School 2026\, an intensive five-week seminar programme (which itself is now fully subscribed).

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Mohammed Joha: Houselessness
DESCRIPTION:In his latest work\, Palestinian artist Mohammed Joha redefines collage as “an architecture of rupture and reassembly\, both a method and a metaphor”. His works bring together scraps of fabric\, paper\, cardboard\, plastic and other salvaged materials\, textures pulled from shattered environments and fragments of personal history\, to form compressed\, jostling topographies; they convey not only violence and destruction\, but also endurance and resistance: a continuation of life within erasure.

SUMMARY:Tamerlano
DESCRIPTION:Once he settled in London\, Handel almost single-handedly created a craze for Italian opera seria\, a style of opera that was predicated on providing solo arias for star virtuoso singers; Tamerlano is one of his best-known\, composed in less than three weeks of 1724 (in the same year he also composed two other operas which have entered the canon\, Rodelinda and Giulio Cesare). The opera’s subject is the defeat of the Ottoman emperor Bajazet and his enslavement by the ruthless Tamerlano\, and Tamerlano is regarded as the most genuinely tragic of Handel’s operas. \nThis “reimagining” by the flamboyant director (and designer of sets\, costumes and lighting\, and choreographer) Stefano Poda\, who has a reputation for striking\, symbolic staging\, blends Handel’s score with “a new musical concept” by composer Kirill Richter that weaves in traditional Uzbek instruments – Tamerlano\, aka Tamerlaine\, Amir Temur or Tamburlaine\, was the leader of the Tartars and is therefore claimed as an early Uzbekh (and this performance is presented by the Uzbekistan Art and Culture Development Foundation). \nThere’s a second performance on 11 January. \n

SUMMARY:Hussein Al Mohasen: The Truth
DESCRIPTION:New work from the Saudi artist\, who has been exhibited all over the Middle East since 1999. His practice is shaped by poetry from the Arab world and “the complex intersections between modern spaces and personal freedoms”; he aims to present the contemporary Arab experience after the fashion of the poetry and music\nthat inspired him. \nThe title is explained by the artist’s curatorial text: “I believe that visual art is an important medium to make people see and perceive the truth … With my new body of work I am trying to reach what is beyond reality\, to go where I want the viewers to experience a visual journey\, which makes them see reality in a hopeful\, peaceful\, manner; even if reality\, sometimes\, is not as desirable as we want …” \nTo 5 February.

SUMMARY:LAST CHNACE Ali Kaaf: The Fire’s Edge
DESCRIPTION:The artist’s first solo show at Ayyam Gallery features Kaaf’s seminal body of work from his Rift\, Helmet and Ras Ras series. \nThe Fire’s Edge evokes the fragile threshold where ancestral practices meet modern erasure\, the line between scorched earth and fertile soil but also the vanishing space where knowledge\, ritual\, and ecology once intertwined. Says the gallery: “the title of the exhibition suggests a meditation on disappearance and persistence\, on how destruction\, drought\, and extraction cast a shadow over the possibility of renewal …” \nWith Kaaf’s photographic works in the Ras Ras series\, the medium is manipulated by fire. The Helmet series explores the intersection of past and present via blown-glass helmets thatv evoke the fragility of memory. Much like Kaaf’s use of paper in the Rift series — a material that is both resilient and inherently delicate — glass becomes a poetic vessel for themes of endurance and vulnerability.
