SUMMARY:Photographic Encounters along the Gulf Coasts
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition of 165 photographs and archival documents from the collection of Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi\, Ruler of Sharjah\, that provides a starting point for research into how photography translates and interprets history. On permanent display at Sharjah Art Foundation’s new Photography Gallery in Al Manakh\, the exhibition features late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century glass slides depicting people\, places and activities along the Arabian Gulf and Indian Ocean coasts; “these images speak in some ways to notions of power\, class\, gender and ethnicity\, signalling the prevailing cultural attitudes of the time” as the press release puts it. \nAbove: ‘Busra [sic] creek’\, late 19th to early 20th century

SUMMARY:Image Keepers
DESCRIPTION:For its inaugural exhibition\, SAF’s Photography Gallery presents a panorama of artistic experimentation and engagement drawn from the Sharjah Art Foundation Collection. Says the Foundation: “the works navigate the sociopolitical terrain of the last six decades against a backdrop of the compressed\, and often fissured\, processes of modernisation and decolonisation”. \nImage Keepers is curated by SAF’s Head of Curatorial Jiwon Lee and Curatorial Assistants Nada Ammagui and Osemudiamen Ekore\, with Souraya Kreidieh and Shahd Murshed from the Foundation’s Collection Department. \nTo 26 April.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Elias Izoli: Inside Out ‘25
DESCRIPTION:After a long break from painting\, Izoli has returned with a new body of work centred around “the circus of life” – Izoli uses the circus as a metaphor for the unpredictability and complexity of life as a Syrian citizen. The circus and its family become a symbol of the broader social body\, with each character representing the individuals who comprise the state’s fabric \nRendered in his signature style of fragmented colours\, each portrait speaks of resilience\, illusion\, and “the spectacle of existence”. Each character is confined within their own space\, each gesture reflects the emotional weight and psychological barriers imposed by our world. The figures seem unable to escape or engage with a reality beyond their own world.

SUMMARY:Lydia Nakashima Degarrod and Susan Ossman: Projects of Art Ethnography
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition brings together works by two artist-anthropologists with practices on the boundaries between scholarship and art. Their projects invite viewers to reflect on migration\, memory\, identity\, and the ways knowledge takes shape across bodies\, materials\, and stories. \nThe exhibition unfolds in six sections\, each anchored by a distinct project. Together\, these works and the projects they represent open a space where imagination\, intellect\, and emotion intersect. Visitors encounter not only completed artworks but also traces of their making – interviews\, documentation\, and collaborative processes – illuminating possibilities for associating ethnographic and artistic practices. \nTo 7 December.

SUMMARY:Richard Hearns: Threshold
DESCRIPTION:A solo exhibition by the Lebanese-Irish painter\, born in Beirut and adopted into Ireland to bear a dual heritage that shapes his artistic identity. This\, his first solo exhibition in the UAE\, presents a new body of work that reflects his ongoing exploration of gesture\, memory\, and place. In these canvases\, Hearns engages with the idea of thresholds through imaginary landscapes. Improvisation\, layering\, and revision are integral to his process\, where the presence of pentimento traces of prior marks and decisions becomes visible\, revealing the evolution of thought and movement. \nTo 6 December. \nAbove: Richard Hearns\, At the Edge of Knowing I & II (2024/2025)

SUMMARY:The Poetry of Birds
DESCRIPTION:Following previous editions of this exhibition in Paris and Tokyo\, L’ÉCOLE\, School of Jewelry Arts aims to offer a dialogue between 19th and 20th-century Western jewellery and Islamic arts\, with poetry as the common thread. Jewels\, precious objects\, and gouaché drawings depicting birds from noted jewellers such as Van Cleef & Arpels\, Cartier\, Buccellati\, Boucheron\, Mellerio\, Falize\, Fabergé\, Boivin\, Mauboussin\, Marchak\, Chaumet\, and JAR will be showcased alongside a selection of Middle Eastern works of art\, including carpets\, ceramics\, metalware\, and miniatures mainly notably on loan from the Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization and Dubai Museums. \nEmirati artist Faisal Al Rais’s contemporary photography\, showcasing the beauty and profound symbolism of birds\, will also make its public debut as part of the show. Freely inspired by Farid al-Din Attar’s The Conference of the Birds (circa 1117)\, the exhibition is conceived as a poetic experience beginning with poems from renowned poets from the region\, followed by a display of bejewelled bird species including falcons\, and culminating in an aviary of imaginary birds by French jeweller Pierre Sterlé (1905-1978). \n“Birds have long held a sacred place in the cultures of the Middle East — as symbols of freedom\, renewal\, and the human spirit\,” said Marie-Laure Cassius-Duranton\, L’ÉCOLE Senior Exhibition Contents Project Manager. “We wanted to honour that tradition while showcasing how these symbols echo across time and continents through art\, poetry\, and jewellery. This exhibition is not just about beauty\, but about the stories and meanings behind it — how the smallest motif can carry centuries of memory\, emotion\, and craftsmanship.” \nTo 25 April. \nAbove: Van Cleef & Arpels\, Eagle brooch (1972)

Working across large-scale painted interiors\, landscapes\, and invented worlds\, Kent transforms historical reference into contemporary compositions that hover between reality and imagination; “his works merge Renaissance perspective with modern imagery\, uniting architectural precision with expressive abstraction”\, as the gallery puts it. \nTo 30 November.

SUMMARY:Araya Rasdjarmrearnsook: The Bouquet and the Wreath
DESCRIPTION:The acclaimed Thai artist’s first international large-scale survey exhibition brings together works from the last 45 years alongside new commissions. Including performance\, video and installations plus some large-scale sculptures not seen since the 1990s\, the exhibition fills the indoor galleries\, lobby and courtyard of Jameel Arts Centre and showcases Rasdjarmrearnsook’s evolution and ongoing engagement with societal\, philosophical and environmental question. \nFrom flowers and beds to stray dogs and notes\, the exhibition brings to the fore the artist’s enduring preoccupations with desire and mortality\, difference and curiosity\, allowing viewers to tap into layered philosophical questions: What is the purpose of art? What does it mean to be human? As she playfully observes\, “I don’t need to spell out everything that I feel\, do I?” \nConceived by guest curators Kittima Chareeprasit\, curator at Chiang Mai’s MAIIAM Contemporary Art Museum (with whom the show is presented) and Roger Nelson\, art historian and curator\, the exhibition is accompanied by a substantial publication featuring perspectives from scholars\, curators\, artists and writers. \nTo 8 March. \nAbove: Araya Rasdjarmrearnsook\, Two Planets: Millet’s The Gleaners and the Thai Farmers (single-channel video)

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Katya Emelyanova: Elevated State
DESCRIPTION:The practice of Moscow-based Katya Emelyanova explores the phenomenology of aesthetic experience\, aiming to evoke emotion\, foster direct engagement\, and maintain accessibility. Drawing from fauvism and abstraction\, her vibrant forms begin as abstract concepts that gradually evolve into refined\, expressive compositions; though immediately engaging\, her works often involve complex technical execution\, developed in collaboration with engineers.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Morteza Khosravi: The Floating Table
DESCRIPTION:Influenced by the likes of Lucian Freud and Egon Schiele\, Khosravi’s drawings and paintings suggest that he’s looking for artistic ideas – “for him\, how to encounter pieces is important than pieces itself”. But does have a characteristic style of painting groups of people that appear to be faded photographs; the viewer has the same sense of nostalgia and reminiscence of better times as they would if they were looking at old family photos. It’s a clever device\, inviting a great deal of participation from the viewer …

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Wassef Boutros-Ghali: A Retrospective (1965-2016)
DESCRIPTION:In the canvases of Wassef Boutros-Ghali\, colours informed by a knowledge of unrelenting Mediterranean sunlight flood the flat plane of the canvas; architectural forms emerge\, collide and re-engineer themselves without a narrative. Boutros-Ghali’s art speaks to the pure and unrestricted physicality of painting\, and his compositions reflect a meticulous yet openhearted response to the human condition – marvels of reason buoyed by a lifetime’s worth of lyricism.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Lala Rukh: The importance of staying quiet
DESCRIPTION:The first exhibition of the new iteration of The importance of staying quiet\, a survey of Pakistani art\, features photographic archives from Lala Rukh’s years at the University of Chicago (1974-76). It includes early works that carry a cinematic sense of composition before arriving at her later language of minimal abstraction\, revealing the sharpening of her framing and the intent of her gaze\, \nUnlike her formal exhibitions\, the Chicago photographs are not minimal or abstract. They contain architecture\, people\, animals\, objects\, and most importantly\, construct narratives; the ‘set’ and direction recall filmic technique. These photos document Lala’s new surroundings and influences as she encountered the art\, music\, and politics that encouraged experimentation …

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Marwan Bassiouni: New Western Views (Preview)
DESCRIPTION:This first solo exhibition in the region for Bassiouni offers a first look at an ongoing international project that reframes landscape photography through the lens of lived Muslim presence in the contemporary West. Each of these photographs – taken from inside mosques across the Netherlands\, Switzerland\, and the UK – centres on a window\, an aperture on to the outside world that is rarely found in purpose-built mosques. Through them we glimpse familiar Western landscapes: traffic junctions\, supermarkets\, apartment blocks\, sports fields. But these views are framed by examples of Islamic visual culture – patterned tiles\, rugs\, wooden minbars\, and more. \nNew Western Views is a counterpoint to a long history of Orientalist image-making. Bassiouni’s landscapes are no longer the backdrop for conquest\, curiosity\, or romanticisation; they are simply what exists outside the mosque window. In doing so\, the work avoids the familiar tropes of victimhood or spectacle …

SUMMARY:My Driver and I: dir Ahd Kamel (2024)
DESCRIPTION:The last in NYUAD Arts Center’s fall film season\, a series which explores history\, identity\, and belonging through Arab and international cinema\, while offering audiences the chance to engage directly with filmmakers is inspired by the childhood of Saudi writer-director-producer Ahd Kamel. Set in Jeddah in the 1980s and 90s\, the film traces the unlikely friendship between a rebellious Saudi teenager and her Sudanese driver\, capturing the ways independence and belonging are negotiated in everyday life. He drives her in a car\, but ultimately enables her to take the wheel of her own life’s journey. \nKamel said\, “My Driver and I is my most personal film\, an act of remembrance and gratitude. It’s about friendship that transcends social roles\, about love that hides in everyday moments\, and about the silent bonds that shape us long after the person is gone. In telling this story\, I wanted to honour Mohi\, my driver\, who was never just that – he was family\, he was home.” \nThe screening will be followed by a live conversation with Kamel.

SUMMARY:Dubai Design Week 2025
DESCRIPTION:The region’s leading (only significant?) design festival returns for its 11th edition with the usual hectic mix of commissions\, exhibitions\, installations\, talks and live events. \nNatasha Carella\, DDW’s Director\, said this year the programme was taking a more reflective approach – “exploring design not only as a practice of innovation but also as a social connector\, a civic and cultural force that shapes how we live together\, communicate and build systems of care. From spatial typologies rooted across cultures and climates to a focus on material intelligence\, detail and cultural nuance\, the programme is intentional and human-centred\, bridging heritage with contemporary. Ultimately\, we’re asking: how can design bring people together across disciplines\, geographies and generations?” That sets the bar quite high … \nThe highlights: \nDowntown Design 5-9 November The region’s leading fair for high-quality and contemporary design\, returns to the d3 Waterfront Terrace. This is the B2B part of Design Week\, showing collections\, innovative products and design solutions for the interiors busness; the show\, which includes this year’s cohort of the Athath Fellowship by MAKE in Abu Dhabi and the annual Tanween programme by Tashkeel\, is complemented by a programme of “pop-up concepts”\, regional spotlights\, talks and panel discussions. Its website is here; admission is AED 80 (one day pass; a four-day pass is AED 150) which gives access to both Editions and Downtown Design. \nEditions 5-9 November\, 12pm – 8pm The second outing for the limited-edition art and design show features prints\, photography\, works on paper\, ceramics\, contemporary design\, and artist multiples. It has its own website and charges for admission (one day pass AED 80\, four-day pass AED 150 – access to both Editions and Downtown Design) \nExhibitions and activations The usual diverse mix of exhibitions\, pop ups and activations includes the always-interesting UAE Designer Exhibition; the d3 Architecture Exhibition in partnership with RIBA; Design You Can Feel by technology brand ASUS\, an exploration of materiality\, craftsmanship and AI; and Bootleg Griot\, an independent public library project for works by artists\, collectives and writers of African descent that celebrates creativity\, cultural exchange and accessibility. \nTalks\, Workshops and Masterclasses Hosted in a dedicated Maker Space\, DDW’s workshop programme is aimed at just about anyone – professionals and aspiring creatives of all ages\, interests and levels of experience. And The Forum at Downtown Design returns with live talks and keynotes\, headlined by Tom Dixon in his Dubai debut. \nUrban Commissions Dubai Design Week’s design competition for architects and designers to experiment with ideas for the public realm centred on the courtyard for 2025. This year’s winning proposal\, When Does a Threshold Become a Courtyard?\, is by UAE-based design and research studio Some Kind of Practice\, founded by Omar Darwish and Abdulla Abbas. \nAbwab The annual commission for designers from across Asia and Africa has showcased the work of more than 180 applicants since its inception in 2015\, Abwab. For 2025\, designers were invited to respond to the theme In the Details; the winning pavilion is Stories of the Isle and the Inlet by Maraj\, a Bahrain based architecture and design platform founded by architects Latifa Alkhayat and Maryam Aljomairi\, \nInstallations More than 30 large-scale outdoor installations will transform d3 into “an open-air space of design innovation\, where public spaces become interactive works that invite exploration and engagement”. \nMarketplace 8–9 November This weekend outdoor market for homegrown businesses and independent makers offers products from homeware\, jewellery\, fashion and lifestyle items to F&B\, experiences\, children’s activities and live performances. \nDubai Design Week runs 4 to 9 November\, apart from the specific dates above. Opening is 10am to 10pm. \nThe Urban Commissions 2025 selection: When Does a Threshold Become a Courtyard? by UAE-based design and research studio Some Kind of Practice
