SUMMARY:Ihab Ahmad: I PUT MY BRAIN ON PAUSE!
DESCRIPTION:The new body of work in this solo exhibition marks a turning point in Ihab Ahmad’s practice – “a move toward instinct\, spontaneity\, and emotional exploration” as the gallery puts it. Smiling faces populate the canvases\, each a reflection of the people and encounters that have left a joyful imprint on his life; new materials\, oil and spray paint\, are applied on linen to create richly layered\, expressive surfaces that blur the line between abstraction and figuration\, “reflecting a deeper trust in intuition and emotional release”. \nAlongside the paintings\, Ahmad will be showing a new series of sculptures that echo the playful\, totemic language of this visual world. \nTo 20 August.

SUMMARY:Wednesday Night Impro: Maestro
DESCRIPTION:The Courtyard’s most peopular evening of elimination improv. Ten actors converge for a night of scenes\, songs and games based on audience suggestions. After each round you score the players on a scale of 1 to 5\, and the one with the lowest score is knocked out. Eventually only one remains\, to be crowned the Maestro. “Fast-paced\, unpredictable\, and hilarious” says the promo\, and you couldn’t argue with that. As with all Courtyard improv evenings it’s free\, but you need to put your name on the guestlist (via the website); and it’s first-come first-served\, so get there early to grab a seat. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Summer Collective: Wavering Hope
DESCRIPTION:Ayyam Gallery’s summer group show celebrates and questions the current siutation in Syria with works by Kais Salman\, Khaled Takreti\, Tammam Azzam\, Abdalla Al Omari\, Othman Moussa\, Safwan Dahoul\, Thaier Helal\, Elias Izoli\, Abdul-Karim Majd Al-Beik\, Mohannad Orabi\, Nihad Al-Turk\, and Yasmine Al Awa. \nAs Ayyam marks two decades of championing Syrian contemporary art\, this exhibition provides a testament to a generation that has not only survived history\, but shaped it – as the gallery says\, “For over two decades of conflict\, displacement\, and resistance\, Syrian artists have relied on their creative practices as a lifeline. Through these practices\, they have fought against erasure\, preserved memory\, and expressed truths too heavy for language alone …” The fall of the Assad regime in December has led to a new chapter: “even in this long-awaited moment\, a deeper question surfaced: was this truly an end\, or merely the next turn in a long cycle of hope and despair?” \nThis year’s Summer Collective echoes that feeling and also reflects on Ayyam’s own journey. Through their individual visions\, the artists in the ummer Collective map the emotional\, political\, and cultural aftermath of conflict\, and the fragile hope that emerges in its wake. Says the gallery: “The show is a reminder that in Syria\, hope is rarely straightforward. It is layered with doubt\, shadowed by memory\, and always vulnerable to being undone. Yet it endures. And in the hands of these artists\, it is made visible – transformed into images\, forms\, and gestures that challenge us to remember\, to reflect\, and to imagine something beyond despair”. \nTo 5 September. \nAbove: Othman Moussa\, The Terror Group (2013)

SUMMARY:Une affaire d'honneur | The Edge of the Blade: dir Vincent Perez (2023)
DESCRIPTION:The fourth film from veteran actor Vincent Perez is set in 1887 Paris\, when illegal duals were common practice. The drama follows the blood feud that slowly develops between fencing master Clément Lacaze (Roschdy Zem)\, desperate to dissuade his nephew from engaging in an unevenly matched duel\, and the young man’s opponent\, Colonel Berchère (Perez). But then Marie-Rose Astié de Valsayre (Doria Tillier) enters the scene: a feisty feminist thinker far ahead of her times\, she does her darnedest to prove that honour is not exclusively the domain of men … \nIn French with English subtitles. SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Zhou Song: Supernatural·Algorithm
DESCRIPTION:Zhou Song’s solo show echoes traditional Chinese landscape painting but employs symbolic imagery to explore relationships between nature\, technology\, and faith. The ‘anthropomorphic tree’ is central\, serving as a metaphor for nature’s alienation by technology – “these trees retain natural forms while merging with human features\, hinting at a future possibility: as algorithms silently infiltrate every corner of nature\, can it preserve its primal purity? Or will it inevitably fuse with human civilisation\, becoming an entirely new entity?”

SUMMARY:Public Art Abu Dhabi Biennial: Bik Van der Pol’s The poem that jumps the fence
DESCRIPTION:Artist duo Bik Van der Pol (Liesbeth Bik and Jos Van der Pol) engage in collaborative projects on how art constructs public spaces for speculative thought and collective creativity. The poem that jumps the fence features weekly performances on Abu Dhabi Beach and workshops connecting words and sand as real and symbolic material that binds our world; every Sunday afternoon\, a performer writes a poem in the sand\, only for it to fade away. During workshops in collaboration with local poets and writers\, participants generate text for the performances. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Richi Bhatia: Antevasin – the one who sits at the border of two worlds
DESCRIPTION:The first solo exhibition at Gallery Isabelle for the UAE-based Indian artist. Her practice spans drawing\, performance\, object-making\, food interventions\, and assemblage; says the gallery\, “inviting us to engage with liminality\, her work challenges the normative categories that shape our understanding of the world and our relationships with its human and nonhuman inhabitants … Her work is at once intimate and transnational. It asks us to sit uncomfortably with the deep interconnections between heritage\, livelihood\, home\, and community-making with various forms of violence and exploitation”. \nAntevasin – the one who sits at the border of two worlds – serves as a guiding figure in this world. Through both process and form\, Bhatia’s work illuminates the porous\, shifting boundaries between life and death; Bhatia grounds much of her practice in fish and meat markets\, engaging with the lives of humans and animals whose labour and bodies are entangled within the global food industry. \nTo 10 September. \n

SUMMARY:Nima Nabavi: Sunrise at the Vortex
DESCRIPTION:The second solo exhibition by Nima Nabavi at the gallery features new works that mark a significant evolution in the artist’s practice\, reflecting a deepened commitment to introspection\, geometry\, and modes of making that embrace technology alongside traditional tools. Created in concentrated bursts within makeshift studios in Roswell\, Brooklyn\, Los Angeles\, and Dubai\, the resulting works “exude increasing complexity and intensity in both form and colour” as the gallery puts it. \nBorn in Iran in 1978\, Nima Nabavi is a self-taught artist now based between Dubai and New York. His practice centres on grid-based compositions of elaborately layered\, ordered forms; this mathematical approach and repetitive numeric symbolism rely heavily on advanced planning\, precise calculations\, and self-developed methodologies to ensure the vital structural accuracy of each work – “this contemplative execution of intricate geometries aims to build complexity out of simple forms and reveal the emergent harmony and inherent beauty of our shared reality”. \nTo 27 July. \nAbove: Nima Nabavi\, Roswell2223 (2023)

SUMMARY:Layered Dialogues: Society as Medium
DESCRIPTION:Subtitled ‘Objects as Anchors: Material\, Narrative\, and Memory’\, this panel discussion riffs on the recently-opened Layered Medium: We Are in Open Circuits exhibition at this venue (runs to 30 June and is well worth seeing). \nAs the blurb puts it: “Objects persist across time and space\, becoming focal points around which communities\, identities\, and histories take shape. From traditional crafts and ritual items to incidental domestic bric-a-brac\, objects can anchor deeply personal or collective narratives … [The] subjective interdependence of material\, memory\, and narrative means that\, while objects might travel\, their precise meanings do not always move with them: what is sincerely felt in one place or time does not necessarily translate …”\n‍\nArtists Rand Abdul Jabbar and Sojung Jun are in conversation with Tina Sherwell\, Associate Arts Professor at NYUAD and co-director of the MFA programme there. \n

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Ahmad Kasha: Offerings – The War Series
DESCRIPTION:Ahmad Kasha’s complete War Series (2018–2025) is presented here for the first time in association with Fann à Porter. Influenced by various traditions of war art\, the series reflects on the psychological toll of violence on people\, animals\, nature\, and in the essence of art across time; Kasha has tendered this meditation on the condition of humanity in the shadow of war through arresting colour palettes and large-scale paintings which convey both fragility and overwhelming violence.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Thomas Lélu: Calm Down It’s Just Art
DESCRIPTION:Thomas Lélu’s practice interweaves photography\, installation art\, and textual elements\, frequently featuring the appropriation and recontextualisation of imagery from popular culture and media to interrogate themes of contemporary society\, consumerism\, and media representation. SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Reynier Llanes: Reverie
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition inspired by French philosopher Gaston Bachelard’s comment on ‘reverie’ – “Reverie is not a mind vacuum. It is rather the gift of an hour which knows the plenitude of the soul”\, a space where imagination and memory intertwine to reveal profound truths about the self and the world. The Cuban painter embodies that vision in this exhibition\, curated by Celine Azem; “his canvases invite viewers into a dreamlike space where personal and collective histories merge … His work does not retreat from life’s struggles but reinterprets them\, transforming them into compositions where emotions\, memories\, and aspirations coexist in harmony”. \nTe exhibition introduces the latest works from Llanes’ The Poet series\, bridging ancestral echoes with contemporary realities; The Poet is an ethereal\, enigmatic figure drifting between memory and imagination\, past and present\, to become a vessel for the viewer’s own reflections. “The Poet is both wanderer and witness\, a keeper of memory embodying the ever-shifting human condition.”

SUMMARY:Mami Wata: dir CJ Obasi (2023)
DESCRIPTION:Much-awarded black-and-white fantasy thriller\, based on Nigerian folklore. Said the LA Times: “That balance between light and dark is how Obasi most potently underscores all his themes: faith and proof\, tradition versus modernity\, the otherworldly alongside the human\, and of course\, Mami Wata’s power to give and take”. \nScreens with Baptized by Fire (dir Kach Offor\, 2024: 15 mins) – a psychedelic exploration of anxiety\, social alienation and the inefficacy of escapism: a regular visit to a dealer in the slums of Lagos takes an unexpected turn and forces this anxious stoner on a different kind of trip. \nThis is the opener for a programme of Friday-evening films selected by Ose Ekore to support the gallery’s current group exhibition time heals\, just not quick enough (runs to 30 July). \n

DESCRIPTION:The noted Ukrainian double pianist makes classical music accessible without losing its depth\, “blending familiar influences with a modern touch” as the promoter puts it. SUMMARY:Tracing the Unseen: Landscapes of Memory and Metaphor
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition brings together four artists from the Atassi Foundation collection – Walid El-Masri\, Farouq Kondakji\, Rida Hus Hus\, and Omar Hamdi – whose work reimagines the landscape not as a fixed geography\, but as a space of memory\, metaphor\, and transformation. Together\, these works resist traditional representations of land or nation; instead\, they explore how landscapes can hold the trace of emotion\, the residue of experience\, and the shifting boundaries of identity. As the Foundation’s blurb puts it: “In this exhibition\, landscape is not where the story begins – it is where it continues to unfold.”.
