SUMMARY:Béchir Boussandel: Tenté par d'autres soleils (Tempted by Other Suns)
DESCRIPTION:The Dubai iteration of this show\, which is presented in collaboration with Kamel Lazaar Foundation and has previously been shown at B7L9 Art Centre in Tunis\, introduces a new body of work in blown glass – a departure from Béchir’s predominantly canvas-based practice. These works centre on the figure of the gleaner\, individuals who collect waste to survive. \nBorn in France but deeply rooted in Bizerte\, Tunisia\, Béchir works across painting\, blown glass\, metal\, and organic materials to tell stories of migration\, urban transformation\, and survival. Through a layered and symbolic approach\, he constructs a material language that feels delicate and durable. The exhibition’s title borrows from French philosopher Claire Marin: “Like migratory birds\, we are always tempted by other suns.” One can’t help but think of the gleaners (known locally as barbechas)\, those who have come from far away\, gleaning from the ground\, some still dreaming of crossing into Europe … \nTo 5 September.

DESCRIPTION:A group show featuring Nevine Hamza\, Atefeh Majidi Nezhad\, and Layla Juma. Says the gallery: “Each artist navigates the threshold between structure and sentiment\, material and memory\, between what is seen and what is sensed …” \nHamza’s work draws on her background in design to transform metaphysical ideas into “atmospheric visual compositions that float between sky and ground … using architectural elements to explore the boundaries between earth and sky\, the tangible and the intangible” (see above). Nezhad’s installations offer a more tactile investigation of space; her Zero-Gseries employs delicate lace and translucent materials that appear suspended in midair\, confronting the viewer with a sense of both weightlessness and intimacy.  And Juma’s minimalist geometries use a language of form and repetition that translates social structures into visual rhythm – through drawing\, installation\, and sculpture\, Juma assembles and dissembles patterns to reveal coded systems and moments of alignment. \nTo 23 August.

DESCRIPTION:The Emirati artist and designer’s inaugural solo exhibition comprises a series of photographs that documents the striking ecological diversity of Mount Kilimanjaro. Captured through Al Gurg’s attentive and empathetic gaze during a six-day journey in 2021\, this work offers “a nuanced exploration of the mountain as a living\, evolving ecosystem shaped by natural forces and human presence … His images reveal the mountain’s layered habitats\, from mist-laden forests and regenerating moorlands affected by recent fires to the fragile ice caps near the summit … At the heart of Everyman’s Mountain lies a meditation on scale and significance”. \nEveryman’s Mountain is not about conquest but about process: the act of seeing\, appreciating\, and bearing witness. DESCRIPTION:Recent projects from the Tehran-born artist. Nazgol Ansarinia’s work examines the systems and networks that underpin her daily life – from everyday objects to routines\, events and experiences. She’s interested in the relationships they form to make up a larger social context. Ansarinia’s practice reflects upon tensions between private worlds and the wider socioeconomic realm\, and “how local iterations of a culture might act as a site for the hopes and fears of those living in a (faltering) globalised world” as the gallery puts it. DESCRIPTION:Malik Thomas Jalil Kydd’s body of work delves into his Iraqi heritage\, while bridging painting\, drawing and fibre art – “reconciling the tactility of textiles with a sensitive examination of form”\, as the gallery puts it. “Focusing primarily on the male figure drawn to a scale slightly larger than life-size\, Kydd has developed a poetic dialogue between material\, identity\, and culture.” His use of natural materials adds another dimension to the works; so sage\, used for dyeing\, is not only part of the creative process but also a spiritual practice grounded in both tradition and personal exploration. Created by environmentalist Cyril Escaravage in association with clarinetist and composer Stéphane Ferrault\, both of whom feature in the performance (as actor and musician respectively)\, Echoes of Earth includes works by Debussy\, Chopin\, Ravel and Glass. \nEscaravage has quoted Erik Orsena in outlining his approach  “Before we understand\, we have to explain. To explain\, you have to marvel. To marvel\, you have to tell”. He says it’s the spectacle of marvelling at nature’s beauties and mysteries\, to explain what is happening before our eyes\, and to show that we can act … \nPresented in partnership with Emirates Nature—WWF\, Climate Fresk\, and Chalhoub Group and previously been performed at Dubai College and the Theatre of Digital Art (ToDA)\, the event marks a major moment in SUAD’s initiatives for 2025 being designated the Year of Ocean.
