SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Nadine Ghandour: Rooms for Error
DESCRIPTION:Nadine Ghandour’s first solo exhibition in the UAE\, curated by Dawn Ross\, features recent works informed by her experiences in various cities\, including Dubai\, Sharjah\, Cairo and Rotterdam. Working with drawing\, writing\, performance and sculpture\, Ghandour creates works that depict imagined (and often farcical) situations set within cities\, exploring the impact of rapid urban development on those environments. “The fast-forward city gives rise to characters who are chronically uncertain”\, says the gallery\, “navigating and coexisting within these fragile architectures\, while constantly teetering on the brink of change or collapse”.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Trần Lương: Tầm Tã – Soaked in the Long Rain
DESCRIPTION:Trần Lương is a major figure in performance and visual art in Vietnam. This exhibition is the first international survey for the artist; it includes painting\, installation\, performance\, community engagement and institution-making as it traces Trần’s life and work from his beginnings as a painter through to his move towards conceptual and performance art\, From his lyrical paintings – drawing on memories of a childhood spent on the move and hiding from US bombs in the Vietnamese countryside – to his high-energy single-man participatory performances\, Trần’s outputs span a wide range. \n‘Tầm Tã – Soaked in the Long Rain is curated by Biljana Ciric and co-organised by Art Jameel\, the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery | Len Lye Centre and The Art Gallery of Western Australia\, where the exhibition will be touring from 2025 to 2027. \n

SUMMARY:L'histoire de Souleymane | The Story of Souleymane: dir Boris Lojkine (2024)
DESCRIPTION:Souleymane is an asylum-seeker with two days to prepare for the interview that will determine his residence permit status. As he pedals through the streets of Paris delivering meals\, he relates his story; it’s one of violence and survival – but not in the way that the immigration interview requires. As the clock tuicks down\, the pace and the tension both pick up … Social realism story-telling at its best\, with elements of a gripping thriller. The film won the Jury Prize at Cannes 2024\, and Abou Sangaré received the Best Actor Award in the Un Certain Regard section. \nIn French with English subtitles. This film is the last in the Louvre Abu Dhabi’s short Cannes Nights series\, inviting the audience to “experience the glamour of the Cannes Film Festival” in collaboration with the Institut Français. Screenings take place in the museum’s auditorium.

SUMMARY:The Temple
DESCRIPTION:As part of International Jazz Month in Abu Dhabi\, The Temple makes its public debut – an evening with some of the UAE’s most creative improvisers. It’s curated by Ratish Chadha\, who also plays in a couple of the slots. On the bill: \nABRI & The Everlasting is a band that’s difficult to confine to a single genre – it plays a blend of soul\, funk\, reggae\, afrobeat\, and jazz – but one that has established a rep as one of the most exciting live acts to come out of the region. \nAleksandra Krstic is an award winning pianist\, singer\, songwriter\, composer and music producer with degrees in classical music and performance and a style that includes funk and electronica as well as jazz; she cites inspiration from artists like Ella Fitzgerald\, Billie Holiday\, and Etta James to more contemporary examples such as Erykah Badu and Lauryn Hill. \nBeatbox Ray has more than 15 years of experience in music production and performance (he won the UAE Beatbox Championship as long ago as 2012). A beatboxer\, multi-instrumentalist\, and live looper with\, he’s known for crafting full compositions in real time and mixing them on the spot … \nBull Funk Zoo (aka Assaad Lakkis) is an artist/producer who fuses jazz with psychedelia\, funk\, and electronica. His latest album\, PY\, is Bull Funk Zoo at his best\, with an underlay of funk but with the unexpected rhythm shifts and driving energy. \nNOON are the kind of band that exemplifies the UAE – “an audio approximation of the Emirates’ cluttered cosmopolitanism and contemporary\, borderless ethos” as the blurb puts it\, with three players from different cultural and musical backgrounds who play ‘experimental Oriental’. “The effect is a little like a proggy\, jazz-rock power trio\, only with an oud where the electric guitar is supposed to be …” \nSanaa & The Rhythmic Circle is a seven-piece band led by Ghanaian bassist and composer Opoku Sanaa. They play a distinctive fusion of jazz with New Age vibes\, African rhythms\, and Gospel overtones. For this performance we’re promised “an intimate\, immersive experience of original compositions\, improvisation\, and storytelling”. \nSandra Ivette is a Cuban musician\, singer/songwriter and music teacher with a unique blend of musical influences and proficiency in viola\, piano\, bass and double bass to add to the mix. A talented songwriter\, she has a distinctive Caribbean style that’s blended with classical and contemporary influences. \nShilpa Ananth is a singer-songwriter (and Berklee alumna) who has managed to create a distinctive blend of South Indian rhythms with influences from soul\, electronica and jazz\, not least by weaving songs that incorporate Tamil\, Malayalam\, Hindi and English. \n

SUMMARY:Les Quatre Cents Coups | The 400 Blows: dir François Truffaut (1959)
DESCRIPTION:Truffaut’s largely autobiographical coming-of-age drama is the classic French New Wave film and utterly unmissable. In the first of many appearances with the director\, Jean-Pierre Léaud is a misunderstood 13-year-old living in a small\, uncomfortable Parisian apartment with his mother\, a sullen woman who doesn’t love him\, and the man who gave him his name but isn’t his father. As he grows older\, Antoine becomes increasingly unable to tolerate his situation and dreams of a better future. Petty theft and skipping school eventually leads him to court and then to a centre for troubled youths near the sea. He escapes and runs to the ocean\, which he has always wanted to see; he turns and looks at the camera in one of cinema’s finest final frames … \nIn French with English subtitles. This film screens as part of the Louvre Abu Dhabi’s Cannes Nights series\, inviting the audience to “experience the glamour of the Cannes Film Festival” in collaboration with the Institut Français. Screenings take place in the museum’s auditorium.

SUMMARY:Moon Is The Oldest TV: dir Amanda Kim (2023)
DESCRIPTION:Kim’s documentary profiles the career of Nam June Paik and his pioneering contributions to video art. A timely meditation on the contradictory ways in which technology elicits both fascist tendencies and intercultural understanding\, the film charts Paik’s artistic evolution with an extensive archive of performance footage\, original interviews from Paik’s contemporaries and collaborators\, and a voiceover of Nam June Paik’s writings. \nIt screens alongside the current Layered Medium: We Are in Open Circuits exhibition of South Korean art from the last six decades\, which riffs on Nam June Paik’s vision of ‘open circuits’ where connection and meaning flow beyond boundaries.

SUMMARY:Zhou Song: Supernatural·Algorithm
DESCRIPTION:Zhou Song’s solo show echoes traditional Chinese landscape painting but employs symbolic imagery to explore relationships between nature\, technology\, and faith. The ‘anthropomorphic tree’ is central\, serving as a metaphor for nature’s alienation by technology – “these trees retain natural forms while merging with human features\, hinting at a future possibility: as algorithms silently infiltrate every corner of nature\, can it preserve its primal purity? Or will it inevitably fuse with human civilisation\, becoming an entirely new entity?” Song’s ‘Pencil trees’\, by contrast\, symbolise a primordial state. Their delicate lines and soft hues evoke tranquillity and harmony; yet pencils are also tools that embody human wisdom and carry the memory of civilisation. ‘Twisted candles’\, another key element\, suggest light\, hope\, and faith – but they are not just metaphors for religion and belief but profound meditations on hope and rebirth. They remind us that faith and hope remain even under technological upheaval. It’s a technologically transformed natural world that witnesses the collision of nature and technology and contemplates the future of humanity and faith … To 17 June.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Flower Shop
DESCRIPTION:A group show – with Maria Andrievskaya\, Almendra Bertoni\, Katie Hector\, Jen Hitchings\, and John Denniston II– that invites us to think of colour not just as a visual element but as a language of its own. “Colour is what makes the world visible\, yet its perception is deeply personal. Does a vibrant burst of red or the delicate fade of blue appear the same to everyone? Or does each of us experience a slightly different reality?” The five artists “push the boundaries of how we see and feel colour”; the show’s title “was born from a fleeting yet vivid moment—passing by a florist and being struck by the explosion of hues\, an everyday spectacle that suddenly revealed itself as something more …”

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Laura Garcia Karras: Eidolon
DESCRIPTION:A solo exhibition by that French artist that explores “the spectral space between presence and absence\, giving form to what lingers just beyond perception” (the ancient Greek word ‘eidolon’ means phantom\, double\, or apparition). \nKarras’s works appear as delicate traces of something once vivid\, now fading\, like the echo of a body or the glimmer of a vanishing dream; the exhibition becomes a meditation on memory\, loss\, and the persistence of desire. As Karras writes: “We live surrounded by ghosts. Bodies fade\, but leave imprints. Desire wanes\, yet its echo remains. Artifice dazzles\, but beneath its glow\, matter disintegrates”.

It uses a monumental 200m2 woollen textile piece that previously wrapped a building damaged in the 2020 Beirut Port explosion to highlight the relationship between materials\, cultural landscapes\, and ecological intimacy\, “challenging the rigid demarcations between art\, labor\, nature\, and performance through a textile medium” as the gallery has it. \nThe works in this show\, all derived from a single source\, range in scale from intimate to monumental. Wool – cleansed\, processed\, manipulated\, and recontextualised – becomes a vessel for gestures\, images\, and rituals. Debris extracted from it – dirt\, seeds\, remnants of vegetable matter – captures the landscape within the material. Stitching\, felting\, and acts of assembly transform these materials into new compositions\, reflecting on material processes\, ecological intimacy\, and the fragility of being. “Wool has this capacity to hold time – it is resilient yet malleable\, intimate yet expansive\,” says Pepe. “In this exhibition\, I am exploring how materials are never neutral; they shape\, and are shaped by care\, labor\, and the environments they inhabit.”

SUMMARY:La Lezione di Teatro | The Acting Class
DESCRIPTION:This 45-minute play — first seen at the NYUAD Arts Center last autumn – is a joyful lesson in theatre and a tribute to the theatrical talent of Italians for connecting to anyone\, transcending language barriers. Set partly in English and partly in Italian (and without subtitles)\, the show ironically demolishes preconceived notions of the difficulty of theatre language and highlights how communication problems can be solved with theatrical bodywork \nThe plot is simple enough\, set in the tradition of the comedy of errors: an Italian actress (Francesca Bizzarri\, who also developed the piece) receives a student (played by Claudio Grilli) for a private drama lesson in her apartment; he is eager to learn the tricks of the trade\, she is thrilled at the idea of making him fall in love with Italian theatre. She sits him down and searches through her library\, preparing the ideal acting class for him – from Plautus to Pirandello via Dario Fo. The lesson falters on language problems\, and communication breaks down until the universal language of commedia dell’arte comes to the rescue …

SUMMARY:Layered Medium: We Are in Open Circuits
DESCRIPTION:Now this should be one of the highlights of the UAE’s exhibition year\, not just because of the content – it’s subtitled explicitly ‘Contemporary Art from Korea\, 1960s to Today’\, and South Korea is home to some of the most interesting\, groundbreaking work of the last few decades years; and the exhibition design reflects that. \nThe exhibition is a selection of works from the Seoul Museum of Art\, curated by SeMA’s Kyung-Hwan Yeo and Maya El Khalil for the Abu Dhabi Festival\, and it aims to cover the “legacy of material and conceptual combination\, exchange\, hybridity\, and innovation” in the radical Korean contemporary art scene. The title echoes Nam June Paik’s vision of ‘open circuits’\, where connection and meaning flow beyond boundaries; so the exhibition immerses the viewer in “the fluid intersections of consciousness\, technology\, and art”\, specifically showing “how artists work with varied technologies to intervene in\, interpret and mediate different scales of experience\, from the individual\, the archival and the collective\, to the abstract and yet to become …” \nIt opens with a curatorial discussion (5-6pm) featuring Kyung-Hwan Yeo and Maya El Khalil with artists Byungjun Kwon and Choi Goen; that’s followed at 6.15pm with conversation between the co-curators and exhibition designers Andrea Trimarchi and Simone Farresin from FormaFantasma. \nTo 30 June. \nAbove: Byungjun Kwon\, Dancing Ladders (2022) \n

SUMMARY:Wednesday Night Impro: Maestro
DESCRIPTION:The Courtyard’s most peopular evening of elimination improv. Ten actors converge for a night of scenes\, songs and games based on audience suggestions. After each round you score the players on a scale of 1 to 5\, and the one with the lowest score is knocked out. SUMMARY:A Life on Tape / Bilder (m)einer Mutter: dir Melanie Lischker (1921)
DESCRIPTION:Melanie Lischker’s documentary reconstructs the life of her mother (who she barely remembers) from over 100 hours of Super 8 and video footage that was meticulously recorded over the decades\, mostly by her father. The result is the poignant story of a young woman who was never able to fully accept her role as a mother as she tried to free herself from the old thought patterns of her rather authoritarian parents in the 1970s. Her ongoing struggle between a desire for freedom and the imperatives of a well-ordered family life have affected the childhood of the director\, her daughter … Both personally and politically\, the film travels through the decades and shows a woman in conflict with the patriarchal structures of her day. \nThis film screens in the NAAS: She Reel series\, a collaboration between several cultural institutions in the UAEwhich has the subtitle ‘Women in Society: Stories That Inspire\, Change That Empowers’. The films in the programme are dedicated to showcasing women’s stories and raising awareness about their roles in our lives.

SUMMARY:La Cité de la peur / Fear City: dir Alain Berberian (1993)
DESCRIPTION:Odile Deray\, a small time public relations executive\, has her work cut out for her – getting some exposure for a pretty terrible small-budget horror movie called Red is Dead. Add in a corrupt politician\, a bodyguard for the lead actor who is more interested in girls than his client\, a police superintendent who can’t handle the press … Full of insider references\, this zany satire about the world of cinema and the Festival de Cannes in particular should make for a fun evening. DESCRIPTION:Inspired in part by the Open GLAM (Galleries\, Libraries\, Archives\, Museums) movement – which promotes open access\, reuse\, and sharing of cultural collections in digital spaces – the Open Culture project seeks a local context for such ideas; organiser and host Engage101 has been actively exploring the potential of participatory practices and infrastructures in the UAE\, and says the project’s launch marks the beginning of a long-term initiative aimed at encouraging collaborative thinking and reflection on the present and future of the region’s cultural commons. \nThis inaugural meeting takes the form of an interactive workshop session with participants invited to contribute personal and professional insights on topics such as … \n> What happens when we begin to view art and culture as a public good?\n> How does this idea extend into digital realms?\n> Does greater access lead to the emancipation of knowledge?\n> What does “digital commons” really mean – and are there more fitting alternatives?\n> How might the UAE’s cultural ecosystem benefit from embracing digital commons?\n> What value\, challenges\, or possibilities arise when we begin to share our individual data\, research\, image-making\, and projects? \nThat’s a lot of meaty\, interesting questions to consider. The event is organised by Aliaa Shaaban\, who researches cultural heritage policy\, participatory practices\, and the role of emerging technologies and innovation within cultural institutions; and Engage101\, a platform that exhibits and supports independent Gulf-based artists and also produces original academic research on the arts in the region.
