DESCRIPTION:Lamya Gargash’s fifth solo show at the gallery celebrates the artist’s poetics of space\, recounting human experiences throughout different geographies without the direct presence of the human figure. “Photographing selections of objects\, furniture pieces\, window details\, and wall trimmings speaks louder than the sum of these individual design decisions – each interior element embodies a human quality and expectations of audience preferences of a certain decade\, socio-economic situation\, and culture.” \nThe title is a metaphor for capturing interiors in spaces as disparate as the Cultural Foundation in Abu Dhabi\, Hotel Acao in Atami\, and the QE2 in Dubai. DESCRIPTION:This solo exhibition explores themes of uniformity\, replication\, flatness\, originality\, fiction\, and exclusivity within the frame of each painting\, but also between the different frames\, and throughout the overall arrangement of the works. \nThe deliberate arrangement of the paintings\, with four triangular corner pieces along with the orientation of the waves purposefully guides viewers on a clockwise journey through the exhibition. Numbered and titled in tandem\, the waves evoke the three-dimensional maquettes traditionally employed by performers to emulate the fluid motion of the ocean\, while their outline drawings are informed by the curves and harmonies of Persian-Arabic calligraphy. \nRuns in Gallery 2 at The Third Line to 21 July.

SUMMARY:Bady Dalloul: A country without a door and a window
DESCRIPTION:Bady Dalloul’s solo show comprises a series of 200 miniature drawings displayed inside pocket matchboxes. The vividly coloured and seemingly childlike images sharply contrast with the harsh reality of the stories they depict of the Syrian civil war; by re-appropriating images from the media\, Dalloul invokes a deeply personal and emotive connection to the conflict. \nThis body of work offers an intimate glimpse into Dalloul’s childhood\, rooted in the games he played with his brother at the age of ten. The drawings are inspired by the fictional countries that Dalloul and his brother created by adding new elements to the visible depictions on postage stamps using black pen and coloured pencil to create new geopolitical territories. Dalloul later refined this technique to explore how propaganda and folklore images contribute to the construction of identities. \nTo 21 July.

SUMMARY:Faustin Linyekula: My Body\, My Archive
DESCRIPTION:Faustin Linyekula is a contemporary dancer and choreographer whose style incorporates the quick\, syncopated rhythms of the West African dance style of Ndombolo. Linyekula’s focus is on notions of loss\, memory and the legacies of war and terror; exploring the fear associated with violent conflict and its debilitating effect on communities\, he expresses the affective qualities of lived and shared experiences through movement. \nThe current work\, part of the Sharjah Biennial 15 performance programme\, is co-produced by Théâtre National de la danse\, Théâtre Vidy-Lausanne; it attempts to unearth the suppressed stories of the Congolese village he has been working with. Local artist Gbaga sculpts the missing women of Linyekula’s maternal clan; bringing the sculptures to the stage\, Linyekula summons\, converses and dances with their spirits. \nThis performance is free to attend\, but advance booking is required.

SUMMARY:Giampiero Romanò: Fragile\, Handle with Care
DESCRIPTION:Romanò combines artistic creativity with his skills in restoration and preservation. He works with antique mirrors and frames\, transforming used pieces of framed mirrors into whole new entities; “Romanò’s ‘mirrors could look rich and beautiful\, yet they are extremely fragile\, exactly like people” as the gallery puts it. And “the artworks are also a representation of a journey to parallel temporal universes and are signs of revolution on the conventional in a bid for change”. \nPast\, present\, and future find a way to co-exist in his artworks. They combine history and memories (the old frames) with the present (people’s faces reflected in the mirrors)\, and he leaves room for the future.”We the human beings are the mirror\, the element that should give cohesion to the frame which is our history\,” he says. \nTo 17 September.

DESCRIPTION:Marking the second year of collaboration between 421 and NYUAD\, the exhibition showcases the research and experimentation of the inaugural cohort of students completing the two-year Master of Fine Arts in Art and Media at NYUAD: \n\nFor Elizabeth Dorazio\, nature is the central subject in the Cosmic Forest in which she questions transforming matter that is random\, unpredictable and in constant movement through drawing\, a cornerstone of her practice.\nIn I Would Tread Lightly\, Liane Al Ghusain presents artworks related to being a Palestinian in the diaspora\, which include geometric embroidery\, serial sculptures\, non-narrative videos\, and performances for processing emotional trauma\, both individually and collectively.\nFor Mapscapes Majd Alloush examines the intersection of art and technology\, exploring the transformation of pixels into tangible objects through printmaking\, moving image\, and digital fabrication with the aim of documenting the often-overlooked urban and absurd landscapes that exist all around us.\nWorking with textiles\, Mahra AlFalahi’s Folded Stories (above) is rooted in exploring the effect of memories of storytelling drawn from her own childhood in which she highlights societal norms and expectations that are nurtured through such narratives.\nFabiola Chiminazzo’s work investigates our society’s excess imagery using archival images from photos\, books\, prints and museum catalogs as a critical tool to propose thinking with and through images in her Encounter Museum.\n\nTo 25 August.

SUMMARY:Nasir Nasrallah: Poetic of Machines
DESCRIPTION:Nasrallah’s solo show is a mythical exploration of the relationship between humans and machines. Through a collection of intricate drawings\, paintings\, publications\, textiles\, and installations\, the UAE-based artist takes us on a journey into a world of mechanical creatures that exist in an unknown space and time\, and is inspired by early Islamic inventions and experiments. \nThe drawings and paintings are detailed\, depicting a variety of unique robotic figures. They are often presented in groups\, suggesting a kind of community or society of machines. The exhibition acts as a stage or a set where an unscripted narrative plays out\, examining how this community of machines converses\, communicates\, and interacts\, exploring the potential for life in the so-called non-living and vice versa. The work invites us to consider the impact of machines on our daily lives and our ever-evolving relationship with these mechanical beings. \nNasrallah’s depictions of machines are not merely mechanical; rather\, he imbues them with personalities\, emotions\, and even a sense of humor. These elements create a sense of familiarity and intimacy\, inviting visitors into the artist’s personal world. \nNasrallah is a recipient of the 2023 cycle of the 421 Artistic Development Program\, of which this exhibition forms a part. \nTo 27 August.

Eventually only one remains\, to be crowned the Maestro. “Fast-paced\, unpredictable\, and hilarious” says the promo\, and you couldn’t argue with that. As with all Courtyard improv evenings it’s free\, but you need to put your name on the guestlist (via the website); and it’s first-come first-served\, so get there early enough to grab a seat.

DESCRIPTION:A two-person show for the summer\, cleverly pivoted on that terrible time to be awake – too early to get up\, too late to get back to deep sleep … Says the gallery’s essay: “Grabuschnigg and Malas don’t just share a set of preset personal responses that can be turned on and off at will. Their approaches didn’t come about by pure coincidence or magic. Rather\, it all comes from inside them\, indexed to all sorts of other impulses that we all see and feel even if we don’t respond to them like this or make art ourselves: monsters in the ultra-early morning\, the shuddering moment between tearful gasps\, the time spent waiting unredeemed for dawn\, deafened by the birds as the sun rears its merciless head. \nMonika Grabuschnigg’s sculptures and installations feature ceramic casts of everyday utensils\, functional artefacts suggesting deep melancholy and loneliness. SUMMARY:Atsuko\, Beth\, and Rachel
DESCRIPTION:They are three of the best female American standups around at the moment – Atsuko Okatsuka\, Beth Stelling\, and Rachel Feinstein. LA-based Atsuko Okatsuka was named one of Variety‘s Top 10 Comics to Watch in 2022; born in Taiwan to Japanese and Taiwanese parents\, she moved to the States at age 10 and lived undocumented for seven years. That informs a lot of her comedy\, but it’s not at all heavy – she notably performed a stand-up set in Pasadena during an earthquake in 2019 and was commended for keeping the show going and the audience calm while the quake went on. \nRachel Feinsten\, another of Variety’s 10 Comics to Watch for 2022 and another finalist on Season 7 of Last Comic Standing\, is good at European-style racy comedy. She played herself as a comedian in the underrated 2015 Stephan Littger feature film Her Composition and has also appeared in Crashing. \nBeth Stelling\, once from Chicago but also from LA now\, has performed in the Netflix series The Standups and served as a writer for the hit HBO TV series Crashing. Stelling has released two comedy albums and was one of the finalists on Season 7 of Last Comic Standing. All three of these acts are good\, but Stelling probably gets magpie’s vote: she’s sharp\, even when she’s expounding the differences between men and women: you haven’t heard her take on what you might assume to be a somewhat hackneyed trope … \nThe show is hosted by NeNe Leakes\, actress\, presenter\, businesswoman\, author\, fashion designer and American TV personality (Real Housewives of Atlanta). \nThis show is part of the Dubai Comedy Festival.
