SUMMARY:Broker: dir Hirokazu Kore-eda (2022)
DESCRIPTION:One rainy night\, Moon So-young (Lee ‘IU’ Ji-eun) leaves her baby Woo-sung outside a ‘baby box’ in Busan\, a safe place set up in Korean churches for new mothers to leave unwanted infants. But instead\, he’s stolen by Sang-hyun (Song Kang-ho) who runs an unofficial adoption brokerage with his business partner (Gang Dong-won). Remorseful at abandoning her child\, So-young tracks the pair down and goes on a road trip with them to meet the baby’s potential parents\, collecting a seven-year-old stowaway from a nearby orphanage along the way.  As they search for Woo-sung’s new family\, the unlikely group evolves into something of a family themselves – unaware they’re being tailed by two detectives (Bae Doona\, Lee Joo-young) who are determined to stop them. A heartwarming\, funny and moving family road movie cum crime comedy\, Broker is an outstanding film from Academy Award nominated filmmaker Hirokazu Kore-eda. In Korean with English subtitles.

SUMMARY:A Hard Day’s Night: dir Richard Lester (1964)
DESCRIPTION:The Beatles before they became a studio-only band and got fed up with fame\, fortune and each other: Richard Lester’s anything-goes direction and a decent lots-of-laughs script plus some good acting from British stalwarts of the time (like Wilfrid Brambell as Ringo’s grandpa) made for a great film\, one that captured much of the sense of fun of being young in the early 1960s. The boys obviously enjoyed it\, showed some acting chops\, and contributed several excellent songs\, too – and unlike other band films of the era the numbers do occur naturally as part of the plot (it helps that the story is basically about our heroes going to swinging London to perform on a TV show). The Independent‘s summary is as good as any: “Part musical bonanza\, part laugh-out-loud farce\, part satirical social document … As invigorating and funny now as it was on its original release half a century ago\, A Hard Day’s Night offers both a perfect showcase for the Beatles and an intriguing snapshot of fast-changing\, early-1960s British society”. Recommended\, whether or not you feel the need to recapture your youth or see what all the fuss was about…

SUMMARY:Nabil Anani: The Land and I
DESCRIPTION:Nabil Anani has been focussed on painting landscapes for over two decades. His work demonstrates how the land is central to his identity and existence\, and how it is also integral to its people; in The Land and I\, Anani sees himself as inseparable from the earth he paints. \nThe exhibition features textured and colourful paintings of the Palestinian landscape\, a celebration of Palestine that he dreams of – nature\, without checkpoints\, cement barriers\, or settlements. He often uses natural materials\, like wood\, straw\, dried herbs\, seeds\, and spices\, infusing his paintings with the very elements of the earth that he  portrays. By grounding his art in the materiality of the land itself\, Anani seeks to reclaim the Palestinian landscape from the continuous attempts of colonial erasure\, emphasising the sense of attachment\, belonging\, and continuity. \nTo 12 January.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE At the Edge of Land
DESCRIPTION:This group exhibition\, curated by Lucas Morin\, highlights unexpectedly interconnected geographies\, resources and commodities\, moving between land and sea to tell stories of conflict\, erosion and extraction; it’s based on works from the Art Jameel Collection plus loans and new commissions by 18 international artists. It originated at Hayy Arts in Jeddah (where it ran November 2023 to April 2024) and the works presented trace the trade routes on which both Dubai and Jeddah are located – the busy maritime path connecting East Asia and Europe via the Gulf\, the Red Sea and the Suez Canal.

SUMMARY:William Kentridge: A Shadow of a Shadow
DESCRIPTION:Kentridge’s first major solo exhibition in the region features a survey of 17 performances by the artist\, spanning a period from the late 1980s to the present and showcasing a wide range of his work. They include his interpretations of King Ubu from Ubu Roi and Mozart’s The Magic Flute alongside Kentridge’s original production The Head and the Load (2018) about Africa and Africans during World War I. On display will be a variety of objects and artworks produced for the development and presentation of Kentridge’s performance projects\, including drawings\, stage backdrops\, animations\, puppets\, props\, costumes and installations inspired by theatrical illusions. \nWhile nodding to Kentridge’s predilection for shadow plays and puppet theatre\, A Shadow of a Shadow also pays homage to his incisive political rebuke of authoritarianism through absurdist satire and theatricality. Together\, the works selected for this exhibition speak to the artist’s ongoing critique of social constructs\, power structures and colonialism. \nThis exhibition is curated by Hoor Al Qasimi\, Director of Sharjah Art Foundation\, and Tarek Abou El Fetouh\, Senior Curator and Director of the Performance Department\, with May Alqaydi\, Assistant Curator\, and Khalid Mohammed\, Curatorial Assistant\, Sharjah Art Foundation. \nTo 8 December. \nAbove: William Kentridge\, Cat / Coffee Pot IV (2019)

SUMMARY:Vantage Point Sharjah (VPS 12)
DESCRIPTION:Sharjah Art Foundation’s annual photography exhibition returns for its 12 edition. Under the theme ‘If I Were Another’ (derived from a Mahmoud Darwish poem)\, this year’s exhibition addresses intimate individual experiences and the weight of collective memory\, proposing empathy as the core lens through which we perceive others who may hold different identities\, histories and sensibilities. \nFrom the artists who responded to this thematic prompt through an international open call\, four were selected for the exhibition; all the works featured works reflect on personal experiences\, history and collective memory. Sara Kontar documents her personal experiences of exile to investigate fragments of forgotten memories and explore themes of displacement. Thasil Suhara Backer examines ecology and biopolitics through the dual lens of theatre and visual art. PhotojournalistArum Dayu explores contemporary Javanese culture and society with a particular focus on feminism and motherhood. Anthropologist Mosfiqur Rahman Johan uses photography to document the hardships of marginalised communities struggling with displacement. \nBringing together diverse voices and lived experiences\, the exhibition embodies the spirit of experimentation in contemporary photography and provides a dynamic platform for a spectrum of approaches\, from documentary to experimental\, in both analogue and digital forms. \nTo 8 December. \nAbove: Thasil Suhara Baker\, Illuminating Shores (2019–2020). SUMMARY:Antonio Dias: The Search for an Open Enigma
DESCRIPTION:Work by Antonio Dias (1944–2018)\, an artist who relentlessly transgressed material and conceptual boundaries\, tackling complex sociopolitical issues across diverse mediums. Drawing upon Hélio Oiticica’s 1969 analysis of Dias’ practice\, the title embraces the versatile\, ever-changing and subversive nature of his artistic oeuvre; the exhibition pays homage to Dias’ category-defying tendencies through a broad selection of works that encompass his artistic trajectory from its beginnings in the 1960s until the early 2000s. \nThe exhibition is curated by Hoor Al Qasimi\, Director of Sharjah Art Foundation\, with Reem Sawan\, Curatorial Assistant at the Foundation. \nTo 8 December. \nAbove: \nAntonio Dias\, Heart to Crush (1966)

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Pascal Navarro: From the winter nights of Oslo to the golden lights of Dubai
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition of Navarro’s abstract paintings. The artist says he considers himself primarily a colourist\, and the sun of Dubai has led him towards a palette of golden colours\, with light shades\, infused with the energy and movement that characterise this ever-evolving city. The nature of the materials he uses are equally important; though; “he embraces the element of surprise in the evolution of his work\, whether by cultivating intentional or accidental mistakes\, experimenting with plastic effects\, or using various types of paints …”

SUMMARY:PowerPointless Networking Night
DESCRIPTION:One of the most consistently funny of the Courtyard’s classic improv gigs is back after a couple of months’ hiatus: the speakers have to give a presentation on a slide deck they’ve never seen before\, with the topic determined at random by the Wheel of Destiny. Each presentation will be rated by a panel of judges and the winner applauded as the PowerPointless champion. Afterwards there’s a chance to mingle with the presenters and the Courtyard’s Corporate Team for mocktails (and a chance to find out more about the Courtyard’s Corporate Academy). \nIt’s free\, with donations welcome; but you need to put your name on the guestlist via the website. It’s first-come first-served\, so get there early to grab a seat. \n

SUMMARY:Magnus Gjoen: The Future of The Past
DESCRIPTION:Gjoen invites the viewer to explore the delicate balance between history and modernity\, as envisioned through a distinctive style that fuses street art influences with pop culture and fine art – symbols and themes from the Renaissance and Baroque are reimagined to challenge traditional views of beauty. That aesthetic isn’t too surprising; after studying fine art and fashion design\, Gjoen worked with Vivienne Westwood en route to a full-time commitment to art rather than fashion. The gallery is suitably bullish: “The Future of The Past … transports viewers across timelines\, challenging the thought of what was\, what is and perhaps what could be”. \nTo 16 October. \nAbove: Magnus Gjoen\, The Morning After the Night Before. SUMMARY:Candice Lin: Night Stone
DESCRIPTION:The LA-based artist’s first solo exhibition in West Asia. In Night Stone\, a large one-room installation\, Candice Lin uses ceramic sculptures\, textile works and a site-specific mural to connect the contemporary trade of manganese between Australia and China with the 18th-century commerce in sea cucumbers. Intrigued by the sea cucumbers’ unique digestive and respiratory systems\, Lin imagines and depicts their toxic encounter with manganese and the surprising bodily transformations that follow. \nThe exhibition was co-commissioned by the Biennale of Sydney and Monash University Museum of Art | MUMA in Melbourn. \nTo 12 January.

SUMMARY:Wednesday Night Impro: Maestro
DESCRIPTION:The Courtyard’s regular evening of elimination improv. Ten actors converge for a night of scenes\, songs and games based on audience suggestions. After each round you score the players on a scale of 1 to 5\, and the one with the lowest score is knocked out. Eventually only one remains\, to be crowned the Maestro. “Fast-paced\, unpredictable\, and hilarious” says the promo\, and you couldn’t argue with that. As with all Courtyard improv evenings it’s free\, but you need to put your name on the guestlist (via the website); and it’s first-come first-served\, so get there early to grab a seat. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Putting the Record Straight: The Lost Women of Art History
DESCRIPTION:The second in this seven-part lecture series by art historian Rose Balston on female artists from the 16th through to the 18th century – “women who have not only been side-lined\, but literally (and shockingly) blocked out of history”\, mainly by the (male) custodians of 19th-century art history. The talks run every other Wednesday to 4 December from 11am to 12.30pm; individual sessions are AED 250 per person\, but there’s a deal for all seven at AED 1\,650. \nThe schedule: \n11 Sept Blazing the Trail: Sofonisba Anguissola\nIn the 16th century\, Sofonisba Anguissola painted her way out of domesticity to unprecedented fame\, earning accolades from (among others) Michelangelo and Van Dyck. \n25 Sept The Secret Renaissance: The Women of Bologna\nThe female artists of 16th and 17th century Bologna flourished in this city and became part of its cultural identity. \n9 Oct Artemisia Gentileschi: Art and Power\nThe most famous of all female artists from this period\, Artemisia secured her place among the Baroque masters with astonishing paintings that powerfully reflect her personal struggles and cultural triumphs. \n23 Oct Women who Shaped the Dutch Golden Age: Legacy Reclaimed\nExplore the Dutch Golden Age through the lens of groundbreaking female artists who often outshone their male counterparts. \n6 Nov Rococo Rock Star: Rosalba Carriera\nCarriera was a canny businesswoman who revolutionised pastel painting\, captivated the Grand Tour elite\, and became an international cultural celebrity. \n20 Nov In the Court of Versailles: Élisabeth Vigée-Lebrun & Adélaïde Labille-Guiard\nCreating sensational portraits of their royal patrons\, the two top female painters in pre-Revolutionary France had nothing to be rivals about except that they both existed in a world not intended for them. \n4 Dec Angelica Kauffman: Prodigy\, Pioneer\nAngelica Kauffman\, a founding member of the Royal Academy\, achieved international renown as both a portrait and history painter. Why then has she been sidelined in art history?

SUMMARY:Narratives of Belonging
DESCRIPTION:The second edition of this open-call Dubai Culture exhibition for Emirati creatives “explores what it means to belong – whether to a place\, an object\, a practice\, or something beyond the physical\, like a memory … By exploring the fluid nature of belonging\, the exhibition considers how our connections shape who we are\, reflecting on the past while imagining new possibilities for the future”. SUMMARY:Comedy Night @ Ting Irie
DESCRIPTION:“UAE’s top established and new comedians light up the stage with laughter” at Ting Irie Abu Dhabi every other Tuesday (best to check their Instagram account @tingirieauh just to be sure). This time there’s a Fineral Home theme (“die laughing”); the Jamaican vibe is always great\, irrespective of whether the comedy is any good – and while there’s always going to be a hit or miss element\, experience suggests it’s been good most of the time so far. The admission price includes two free drinks\, and there’s a great DJ set right afterwards too.

SUMMARY:Ökozid | Ecocide: dir Andres Veiel (2020)
DESCRIPTION:It is the year 2034: drought and flooding are destroying the livelihoods of millions of people. The International Court of Justice has had to evacuate from The Hague to Berlin\, where the climate catastrophe becomes the subject of legal proceedings. Two lawyers are representing 31 countries of the Global South\, which are doomed without the support of the international community; they raise questions of responsibility\, demanding compensation and a right to the integrity of nature in order to ensure their own survival. The court must decide whether German politicians will be held accountable for their failure to protect the climate and thus set a precedent … \nAndres Veiel has designed a meticulously researched movie that is all too timely in its critique of European climate protection policy over the past two decades. The film is termed science fiction\, but only the blinkered wiould deny the facts of climate change; the scenario it depicts is all too credible. A strong if unstarry cast is headed  Nina Kunzendorf\, Friederike Becht\, Edgar Selge and Ulrich Tukur. \n \nThe film screens in the NAAS programme under the umbrella title Green Reel: Films for a Sustainable Future\, featuring independent films from around the world that focus on the environment and sustainability. NAAS is a collaboration between a number of cultural institutions in the UAE: the Goethe-Institut Gulf Region\, the Embassies of France in the United Arab Emirates\, the Embassy of Canada to the United Arab Emirates\, the Italian Cultural Institute of Abu Dhabi\, the Embassy of Switzerland to the United Arab Emirates and the Kingdom of Bahrain\, and Alliance Française Dubai. \nNAAS: Green Reel runs from 10 September to 26 November at Alliance Française Dubai. The screenings are all free and subtitled in English. \nUpcoming: (click the title for the link) \n8 October Siccità | Dry dir Paolo Virzì (2022)\n22 October Animal dir Cyril Dion (2021)\n5 November Taste the Waste dir Valentin Thurn (2011)\n12 November More than Honey dir Markus Imhoof (2012)\n19 November Hadwin’s Judgement dir Sasha Snow (2015)\n26 November Dans la brume | Just a Breath Away dir Daniel Roby (2018)

SUMMARY:Armageddon Time: dir James Gray (2022)
DESCRIPTION:James Gray’s deeply personal coming-of-age tale\, set in 1980s New York\, boasts fine performances from Anne Hathaway and Jeremy Strong as the parents and Anthony Hopkins dispensing twinkly grandfatherly wisdom – and\, as a sixth-grader making his way through school and life\, the impressive newcomer Banks Repeta. It’s an in-between world\, on the brink of the hip-hop and Reaganism but also rooted in the past and especially in the family’s Jewish history. Gray’s film is beautifully imagined\, shot with intimate naturalism by Darius Khondji and suffused in a period tobacco-coloured murkiness; it’s perceptive and humane\, elevating the smallest moments into the greatest drama. Recommended.

SUMMARY:Go Back for Murder
DESCRIPTION:The final performance for this Agatha Christie play. There’s an unusual twist on the traditional murder mystery \, the action moving from past to present and illuminating the danger of relying on personal testimony warped by time\, prejudice and perception. Carla Crale’s mother died in prison\, serving a sentence for her father’s murder. A posthumous letter from her convinces Carla that her mother was wrongfully convicted: with the help of family solicitor Justin Fogg\, Carla persuades all those who were present on the day of her father’s death to return to the scene of the crime and ‘go back’ 15 years to recount their version of events. By studying each suspect’s testimony and the various inconsistencies between them\, the drama arrives at a disturbing and terrible truth …
