DESCRIPTION:The Jameel’s annual handover of the arts centre to a selected cohort of young visionaries starts on Saturday 4 May and runs to Monday 27 May. There will be multiple artwork and installation “interventions” across the ground floor of the building\, both indoors and outdoors\, with a public programme of talks\, performances and more on the four weekends. \nThe Assembly is an annual experimental learning programme designed to foster creative leaders aged 18 to 24 in the UAE\, inviting the creation and curation of projects reflective of their generation’s areas of interest. DESCRIPTION:New and historical works by 15 intergenerational artists in the Sharjah Art Foundation Collection that explore drawing as a practice. The exhibition grew out of a two-year research project into conserving paper; it seeks to re-examine the very nature of drawing as a culturally situated disciplinary practice – one that begins in the mind and extends into myriad material forms. DESCRIPTION:Spectacular and crowd-pleasing genre-crossing work from Moscow’s hottest contemporary dance company\, created by celebrity choreographer Alla Duhova in 1986 and still led by her. There’s nothing academic about their work – their styles range from ballet to break via hip-hop and jazz – and this show promises “cutting-edge choreography\, exciting stories\, fantastic costumes\, fashionable music\, and innovative lighting and graphics solutions”\, which at the least sounds comprehensive. There are performances at 3pm and 8pm; the ticket also buys you a 20 percent discount on food and drink at Jumeirah Zabeel Saray.

The actor is accompanied by a put-upon flunky (maybe a stage manager?) who strives with the help of hastily-scribbled cardboard signs and boxes to help us understand the meaning of this journey … \nIt’s fun\, mad as trumpets\, with echoes of Monty Python\, Laurel and Hardy\, and the Mighty Boosh; and it’s well worth an evening of your time. \nMatthew T Corbett directs Sadiq Saboowala and Patrick Albrecht for Complices Théâtre. DESCRIPTION:Ebtekar’s exhibition is presented as “one work in seven chapters”\, each composed of one to four doorway-sized panels that combine multi-wavelength photographic processes with the artist’s distinctive cloud-making brushstrokes. DESCRIPTION:The second of three exhibitions showcasing contemporary approaches to textile and fibre art curated for Green Art Gallery by Murtaza Vali. It brings together work by four contemporary artists – M’barek Bouhchichi\, Sayan Chanda\, Himali Singh Soin\, and Swapnaa Tamhane – that references the rich and diverse history and practice of textile arts across South and West Asia and North Africa. \nOften made in collaboration with master artisans\, the included artworks use a variety of traditional dyeing and weaving techniques and materials: wool cloth made in southeastern Morocco and then stained with henna; a handwoven tapestry and a patchwork abstraction that incorporate deconstructed vintage quilts and scarves from Bengal; Ikat fabric dyed and woven in Andhra Pradesh; and industrially made cotton embellished by hand with wood block printing and mirror embroidery in the desert region of Kutch\, Gujarat. “Countering colonial and modernist discourses that devalued such Indigenous textile traditions as mere craft\, these works reclaim their vitality as a mode of contemporary expression. Complicating modernist notions of autonomy and authorship through collaboration\, they blur commonly held distinctions between object and process\, form and ornament\, past and future\, and the handmade and the digital. And much like the traditional techniques and processes they invoke\, these artworks remind us that textile is always a multisensory medium\, resonating across visual\, sonic\, and bodily registers …” \nTo 12 June.

DESCRIPTION:A 40-minute dance performance conceived as part of artist Gözde İlkin’s installation in the current NYU Abu Dhabi Art Gallery exhibition In Real Time (which ends on 9 June). It’s a collaboration between İlkin\, choreographer Aslı Öztürk\, musician Berke Can Özcan\, and NYUAD Art Gallery’s curator Duygu Demir; it features dancers Barış Diker\, Alara Erdem and Umut Özdaloğlu. Demir says the installation is conceived as “a home to homeless stones\, a shift for dancers and twigs\, a prayer for fractures\, or a dream enveloped in echoes that come from the four corners of the world … On the one hand\, the installation is a landscape painting stretched to three dimensions\, on the other\, it is a stage for sound and movement”. \nThe performance\, like the installation\, revolves around the classical elements of fire\, air\, earth\, and water. The dancers embody those elements\, tracing an abstract journey of transformation from dust to the human\, and beyond. Öztürk’s choreography\, informed by somatic bodywork\, takes cues from the imagery of İlkin’s two-dimensional textile works\, carrying them into the three-dimensional space\, and activates the artist’s soft sculptures with movement to create moving landscapes. Berke Can Özcan’s music combines the soundscape of the field recordings he created for the Entrusted Ground installation with sections from his previous album\, Mountains are Mountains. \nThe performance takes place on 9 May at 6.30pm\, and again on 11 May at 12pm and 5pm.

Under the baton of his son Andrea Morricone\, the Armenian Symphony Orchestra and Dubai Festival Chorus will bring to life the music from films such as The Good\, the Bad and the Ugly\, Once Upon a Time in the West and Cinema Paradiso. There’s a second performance on 10 May\, followed by cine-concerts of Star Wars\, Pirates of the Caribbean and The Kid\, all with the Armenian State Symphony Orchestra. And there are deals to be had if you want to attend two or more of the concerts. One of them must be The Kid\, but otherwise you can get a 10% discount on two performances; 15% on three; and 20% on all four.

Australia’s Circa Contemporary Circus is one of the globe’s leading performance companies\, pioneering how extreme physicality can create powerful and moving performances and drawing rave reviews and standing ovations across six continents since its foundation in 2006. \nDuck Pond is one of the company’s most ambitious works yet\, an exuberant take on Swan Lake (with a hint of Hans Christian Andersen’s The Ugly Duckling) that mixes the enchantment of the ballet with the thrill of the circus. It’s full of Circa’s signature physicality and is shot through with cheeky humour\, colourful surrealism\, and a thoroughly contemporary energy. You’ll see a clumsy film crew\, a sequinned flipper-wearing army of ducks\, and a burlesque black swan in this tale of identity and finding your true self; there are sumptuous aerials\, enchanting duets\, jaw-dropping acrobatics\, and many\, many feathers … \nA review of the early performances in Australia last year called it “a cleverly inventive and astonishing blend of many art forms\, primarily circus\, ballet\, theatre and classical music” and promised that “Duck Pond may just be one of the most exhilarating and thought-provoking shows you will see this year”. \nDuck Pond was created by circus visionary (and Circa’s founder) Yaron Lifschitz (“the Caravaggio of contemporary circus”) with ten members of the ensemble. The music is by Jethro Woodward (“with hints of Tchaikovsky”) and haute couture costumes are courtesy of Libby McDonnell. The performance will be followed by a post-show Q&A with the artists\, moderated by actress Francesca Bizzarri; there are further performances on 11 and 12 May at 3pm. \n  \n
