SUMMARY:Kais Salman: Remnants
DESCRIPTION:New work by Kais Salman\, who “places his audience among ruins … his recent body of work acting as a pile of forgotten images buried beneath decades of historical buildup … Faces emerge through Salman’s energetic brushwork\, only to fade back into the walls and dissolve into material debris. Therefore\, rendering his paintings as spaces of loss …” Recognised for his very characteristic abstract expressionist style\, Salman’s energetic brushwork and gestural application of acrylics in vibrant colours express an urgency and energy\,  “a space where introspection transforms into insight”. \nTo 18 March. \nAbove: Kais Salman\, Red Carpet (2025)

SUMMARY:Anuar Khalifi: Remember the Future
DESCRIPTION:The third Third Line solo exhibition by Spanish-Moroccan artist Anuar Khalifi comprises a new body of large-scale paintings and works on paper that represent an evolution in Khalifi’s practice\, with increasingly intricate and carefully composed settings expanding the pictorial field. Says the gallery: “The works move between reality and imagination and across different tenses in time\, inviting viewers to partake in meaning-making with curiosity and childlike wonder”. SUMMARY:Alia Hussain Lootah: In the Space of Becoming
DESCRIPTION:In this new body of work – paintings\, drawings\, and sculpture – Alia Lootah continues an exploration of how form moves\, shifts\, and transforms (“a form is never finished\, only paused”). Shapes stretch\, collapse\, and reappear altered\, “existing in a space between recognition and ambiguity” as the gallery puts it. \nThe exhibition is anchored by knitted sculptures that demonstrate how simple materials can generate complexity – structures produced by a meditative\, rhythmic act shaped by memory and labour\, contrasting softness and stability\, movement and stillness. “The exhibition invites viewers to engage patiently\, witnessing forms that are always unfolding\, always becoming …” \nTo 10 March.

SUMMARY:Anahita Razmi: The Task of the Mythologist
DESCRIPTION:Anahita Razmi’s video\, installation and performance works usually focus on issues of identity and gender and examine processes of cultural appropriation in which the meanings of existing images\, artefacts and thus identities are put into question by situating them in another context. Her sixth solo exhibition at the gallery references Roland Barthes’ Mythologies (1957)\, a seminal work on the subject that examines how culture turns mundane objects and practices into myths that convey ideological meanings; Razmi builds on this premise to find global power structures embedded in our material and virtual; for her\, symbols such as the fingers-crossed emoji\, a Turkish talismanic shirt\, or a 90s Britpop emblem hold unstable meanings\, shifting with context and use. The act of deconstructing these layered meanings is what Barthes describes as “the task of the mythologist.” \nFor Razmi’s ongoing Talismanic Polarities series (2021–present)\, unique Islamic talismanic shirts are pinned with buttons reading YES\, BUT\, NO and AND; “by foregrounding these semantic framing devices\, Razmi incorporates tools of interpretation into a renewed reading of an object that sustains multiple and even conflicting possibilities” says the gallery. \nA new work\, OA SIS (2025) features Oasis band T-shirts with evil eye appliqués covering the OA so that only SIS remains:  a signifier of Western masculinity revised into one of Eastern femininity or a comment on the commercialisation of feminism? Or both? Or more? \nRecommended. To 26 March.

SUMMARY::mentalKLINIK: Are You Human Enough
DESCRIPTION:Set within an environment of visual overload and compulsive accumulation\, the work in this third solo exhibition at the gallery for the artist duo centres on the human figure at risk of dissolving into surface\, interface\, and pattern – a mere carrier of data and aesthetic signals. \nThe exhibition brings together a video work featuring the MetaHuman Viola (from the series Lunatic Poet\, 2024)\, whose fragmented speech echoes the pressures of contemporary digital life; and LIKEWISE (2025: above)\, a 360-degree installation composed of camouflaged mirrored panels – printed surfaces depicting parrots\, lobsters\, manicured hands\, lipstick\, and jewellery are physically disrupted through smearing and erosion\, merging digital production with manual intervention. Camouflage patterns\, advertising references\, and fractured reflections interrupt clear vision\, producing moments of visual saturation and pause … \nTo 20 March.

SUMMARY:Aïda Muluneh: This Bloom I Borrow
DESCRIPTION:A new series of images by the Ethiopian art photographer\, her second solo exhibition at the gallery. The show includes 10 works that have never been seen before\, using techniques developed through Muluneh’s recent residency at Efie. \nMuluneh has been a distinctive voice in contemporary photography throughout her 25-year career; her vivid\, carefully staged photographs of painted figures in surreal settings draw on African iconography\, architecture and textiles to create narratives that blur the boundaries between photography\, painting and performance. Muluneh has developed an experimental process that bridges photography\, silkscreen printing and hand-painting to transform photographs into unique\, painterly objects. \nThe works are characterised by bold geometric compositions and recurring symbols such as eyes\, keys\, masks\, flowers\, and ancestral motifs\, mostly rendered in striking primary colours. They continue Muluneh’s ongoing enquiry into ideas of identity\, womanhood and heritage through a lens of material experimentation. \nAt 4.30pm on the opening day of the exhibition\, Aïda Muluneh will talking about her work with exhibition catalogue contributor\, artist and curator Sheikh Maktoum Al Maktoum. \nTo 5 April. \n \n

SUMMARY:Saher Nassar: Chronicles from the Storm
DESCRIPTION:In this new body of work\, Nassar reflects on prolonged states of loss\, endurance\, and moral exhaustion\, translating deeply personal and collective experiences across multiple mediums. Says the gallery: “Rather than seeking resolution or catharsis\, the works dwell in a state of moral exhaustion where clarity is suspended and certainty dissolves. This prolonged experience becomes a reluctant muse\, granting the artist the distance needed to engage more deeply with his subject matter: studies of loss\, the collapse of familiar symbols\, the formation of new convictions\, and an intimacy with endurance that arrives without epiphany or closure …” \nTo 18 March.

SUMMARY:John Dilg: Found and Lost
DESCRIPTION:The Iowa-based artist John Dilg represents scenic panoramas as earth-toned paintings that feel immediately familiar yet poignantly dreamlike. Having specialised in abstraction early in his career\, Dilg’s evolution towards landscape painting retained an especial awareness of spatial relationships – “a consciousness of the physical and allusory [sic] weight of forms and structures\,” as the gallery puts it. “His landscapes transcend scenery\, becoming a lexicon of objects\, each powerfully charged with memory and meaning. Dilg’s paintings are wonderfully contemplative spaces\, where solitude and recognition coexist\, evoking our shared longing for meaning within nature’s vastness …” \nTo 9 April. \nAbove: John Dilg\, Mistletoe (2025)

SUMMARY:War and Peace
DESCRIPTION:Tolstoy’s epic novel has often resisted dramatisation as a one-off theatrical performance – it’s huge\, after all\, which is the classic BBC series from 1972 ran for fully 20 episodes and Sergei Bondarchuk’s film adaptation from the 60s spanned seven hours in four parts. This version\, by celebrated director Rimas Tuminas and delivered by the Vakhtangov State Academic Theatre of Russia\, comes in a more manageable four hours plus a (much needed) intermission; but it has still received favourable reviews\, with few complaints about its sweep and spectacle – it seems that most of the grandeur and complexity of Tolstoy’s work has been retained\, with the Napoleonic Wars as the background for the lives\, ambitions\, hopes and sorrows of the three families portrayed: the Rostovs\, the Bolkonskys\, the Kuragins. \nIt’s performed in Russian with English surtitles. There’s a second performance on 18 January at 5pm.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Ala Younis: Past of a Temporal Universe
DESCRIPTION:This mid-career retrospective marks the first institutional survey in the region for Ala Younis. It includes archival installations\, textiles\, murals\, mosaics\, and drawings spanning the last two decades of her hybrid practice as an artist-researcher-curator. There will also be some major new works\, including a collaboration with historian Dr Masha Kirasirova supported by NYUAD’s Research Kitchens\, and new projects developed during the artist’s tenure as research scholar at NYUAD’s al Mawrid Arab Center for the Study of Art. \nInformed by her training in architecture and visual cultures\, Younis’ projects centre on the physical developments and narrative intersections of the Arab geographies in which she grew up\, frequently drawing from a wide range of formal and informal archives. Together\, these works trace conceptual and formal throughlines in her work\, from the tools and skills she developed as she emerged in the art scene of Amman to her experiments in navigating new knowledge as she evolved the unique methods and perspective for which she is noted today.

SUMMARY:War and Peace
DESCRIPTION:The second and final performance of the Vakhtangov State Academic Theatre adaptation of Tolstoy’s epic novel\, by celebrated director Rimas Tuminas. Reviews suggest that most of the grandeur and complexity of Tolstoy’s work has been retained\, with the Napoleonic Wars as the background for the lives\, ambitions\, hopes and sorrows of the three families portrayed: the Rostovs\, the Bolkonskys\, the Kuragins. It’s performed in Russian with English surtitles.

SUMMARY:School is a City: Prasad Shetty and Rupali Gupte
DESCRIPTION:Prasad Shetty and Rupali Gupte reflect on the motivations and challenges that shaped their commitment to the School of Environment and Architecture in Mumbai which they founded in 2014. Today\, it is a fully accredited architecture school with around 200 students\, 30 faculty members\, and a reputation for a critical and playfully experimental approach. Gupte and Shetty suggest one of the clearest ways architects contribute to a city: by engaging those who will soon be designing it. \nThis is a public event associated with the Jameel’s Night School 2026\, an intensive five-week seminar programme (which itself is now fully subscribed).

SUMMARY:Aakash Odedra: Songs of the Bulbul
DESCRIPTION:Aakash Odedra returns to the Arts Center with his latest work\, an hour of beautiful\, engrossing virtuoso dance from a single dancer that unashamedly embodies emotions – mostly joy\, some reflection\, a tinge of sadness and pain – in a piece that ultimately describes a journey towards unity with the divine that is the core of Sufism. You don’t have to believe in the spiritual to feel the story\, though; the dancing\, the choreography\, the music\, the lighting are all that good. \nIn Persian tradition the bulbul is the bird we know as the nightingale\, famous for its melodious song and symbolising beauty\, love\, and even springtime in many cultures. The beauty of the bulbul’s singing is supposed to increase as it nears the end of its life\, mirroring the way physical boundaries can be transcended as we move towards enlightenment and the divine. \nTo extract the most powerful melody from the caged bird\, a bulbul underwent a gruelling process of ‘training’. “It was first placed in a pitch-black room so that it would sing out of a desperate longing for light to touch its feathers once more. This was followed by several harsh stages of deprivation. Finally\, in the last stage\, the bird’s eyes were removed. Blinded and broken\, the bird realised its only remaining option was to leave its mortal body by singing one final\, powerful\, and melancholic song – leaving its earthly cage behind to transcend to a higher realm where it could no longer be confined”. \nSongs of the Bulbul shows us this progress from within a minimal but highly effective set designed by Emanuele Salamanca that includes a bank of (electric) candles and endless rose petals. It’s all set off by Fabiana Piccioli’s exquisite\, atmospheric lighting; watch out for the dramatic blinding sequence … \nThe score is by Rushil Ranjan (from the Orchestral Qawwali Project) that weaves classical Indian rhythms with modern orchestral textures. It’s played (in a recording) by co-commissioners Manchester Camerata.  Principal choreography is by Rani Khanam\, a distinguished kathak dancer with more three decades of professional experience and numerous accolades to her name. \nOriginally staged at the Edinburgh International Festival in 2024\, Songs of the Bulbul has been touring in Britain to rave reviews (we saw it somewhat arbitrarily in Norwich). After Abu Dhabi it moves on to three dates in Australia and one in Florida. \nThe performance will be followed by a Q&A with Aakash Odedra and Dr Alka Bagri of the Bagri Foundation\, co-presenter of Songs of the Bulbul. \nOur feature on Songs of the Bulbul is here.

SUMMARY:Localized Futures: Collective Heritage
DESCRIPTION:A key element in 421’s Winter season is Localized Futures: Conversations by 421 x afikra\, a four-part series of talks and panel discussions developed in collaboration with afikra. The series aims to explore the future of key cultural and civic sectors through a uniquely regional lens\, challenging the dominant global narrative by looking at the complexities\, innovations\, and solutions inherent to the MENA region. 421 says this forum will foster high-level public discourse\, share critical local knowledge\, and generally strengthen the local intellectual community. \nThose are grand aims\, but clearly fit the remits of both afikra and 421. This opener explores the roles of museums\, institutions\, policymakers\, and community advocates in defining what ‘heritage’ means – “not as a static relic\, but as a living\,\nevolving source of identity and future-making”. \nOn the panel: \nRanda Omar bin Haidar Managing Partner at Bani & Al Culture\, a consultancy specialising in research and development for arts and culture projects in the region \nSalama Nasser Al Shamsi Director of Cultural sites at DCT Abu Dhabi\, where she is responsible for managing 16 cultural sites throughout the Emirate and oversees cultural preservation efforts and programmes to promote Abu Dhabi’s heritage \nSafiya Al Maskari Project Manager at Lest We Forget\, a researcher whose expertise lies in documenting oral memories of the people in the UAE \nModerated by Mikey Muhanna\, top interviewer across culture\, policy\, academia\, media\, and the arts. \nThe upcoming Localized Futures topics are Education (10 Feb)\, Cities & Communities (2 Apr) and Arts (9 Apr).

SUMMARY:Picasso\, the Figure
DESCRIPTION:A landmark monographic exhibition that traces Picasso’s lifelong preoccupation with the human form. Included are more than 130 artworks from the Musée National Picasso-Paris and other institutions\, as well as Louvre Abu Dhabi\, DCT Abu Dhabi\, and other regional collections that suggest the artist’s influence on the Arab world; also featured are works by key Arab modernists who have engaged with Picasso’s legacy\, such as Jewad Selim’s Alqailoula [The Nap] (1958\, below). \n \nThe exhibition offers a chronological itinerary of Picasso’s radical transformations\, intertwining figuration with enduring mythological archetypes across painting\, sculpture\, drawing\, and ceramics. It is curated by Cécile Debray\, Virginie Perdrisot-Cassan (both from Musée national Picasso–Paris) and Aisha AlAhmadi (Associate Curator at Louvre Abu Dhabi). \nUnmissable. To 31 May.

SUMMARY:Emirates Airline Festival of Literature
DESCRIPTION:LitFest is back with the usual rich brew of panel discussions and conversations\, talks\, workshops\, family activities and the LitFest After Hours programme. It looks like the biggest and most varied yet\, so that probably means it will be the best … \nSome sessions are free (including workshops for beginner writers) but most are charged-for – AED 50 upwards (AED 200 for many of the single-author sessions\, AED 300+ for workshops\, AED 425 for the Desert Stanzas poetry-music performances under the stars). There’s a multi-day pass at AED 400\, which looks like a bargain – in fac it only gets you into Conversations\, Family Activities\, and LitFest After Hours\, but you could easily spend a lot more than 400 on those. \nMore multi-session pass options would be a good thing. So would a scheduler; there are 22 venue rooms in total and half-hour slots between 8am and 10pm across the seven days (not all of which are filled\, of course\, but there are more than 150 events in total) so it can get quite complicated looking for non-clashing events. There’s a PDF grid here which might help\, though it’s bit and difficult to use; something a bit more AI-ish would have been better – “is this mix of events doable?” or “will I have time to get from A to B?” for instance.

SUMMARY:Rob Beckett: Giraffe
DESCRIPTION:Rob Beckett is getting near to the end of a sell-out tour with his new show. The affable bloke-near-door of British comedy is known for his turns on shows like Would I Lie to You\, Celebs Go Dating\, 8 Out of 10 Cats\, and his TV double acts with Romesh Ranganathan\, and he’s been a fixture on the international comedy circuit for years – loud\, loveable\, completely (and often accidentally) unfiltered. He’s usually good value for money\, especially when he gets stuck into a story … \nNote that it’s an early start at 6pm. \n(There are no wild animals in the show\, so why Giraffe? Because it’s rhyming slang for laugh\, and because he always wanted to have a long neck.)
