SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Omar Al Gurg: Everyman’s Mountain
DESCRIPTION:The Emirati artist and designer’s inaugural solo exhibition comprises a series of photographs that documents the striking ecological diversity of Mount Kilimanjaro. Captured through Al Gurg’s attentive and empathetic gaze during a six-day journey in 2021\, this work offers “a nuanced exploration of the mountain as a living\, evolving ecosystem shaped by natural forces and human presence … His images reveal the mountain’s layered habitats\, from mist-laden forests and regenerating moorlands affected by recent fires to the fragile ice caps near the summit … At the heart of Everyman’s Mountain lies a meditation on scale and significance”.

SUMMARY:Every Brilliant Thing
DESCRIPTION:A very welcome return for this single-hander play that has already been a smash hit at the Junction four times in the last three years. It’s not hard to see why: written by the English playwright/director Duncan Macmillan with actor/writer/comedian Johnny Donahoe\, it manages to be both intimate and interactive\, a touching\, funny\, and uplifting play that chronicles life’s small joys and reveals the lengths to which we will go for those we love. \nAs his mother battles chronic depression\, a child creates a list of every thing they can think of that makes life worth living. As the child grows\, so does the list. Looking back on a life of ups and downs\, the man takes the audience on an inspiring journey that celebrates finding joy in the mundane and being grateful for the simple pleasures hiding all around us. \nThe Guardian called the original Edinburgh Festival production “one of the funniest plays you’ll ever see about depression – and possibly one of the funniest plays you’ll ever see\, full stop”. The Junction’s main man Gautam Goenka directs and performs. Highly recommended. \nThere are further performances on 13 and 14 September. \n

SUMMARY:Game. Set. Match.
DESCRIPTION:The Playhouse Studio Theatre at New Covent Garden (located in a much-revamped Mall of the Emirates space that now includes a fully-equipped 575-seater theatre plus dance and rehearsal studios and a new restaurant) opens with this new Tall Tales / Cross Bronx Studio production.. \nIt has been adapted from the 2016 Italian film Perfect Strangers\, itself a critical and commercial success that has resonated with audiences around the world and generated a number of remakes and reworkings; for this production\, writer Sid Abbas has switched the locale to Dubai’s tennis scene. Set in a luxury tennis club suite\, the play follows seven long-time friends reunited for a destination wedding; but a seemingly innocent game of sharing phone messages and calls turns into digital Russian roulette. Secrets\, affairs\, emotional confessions\, and some truly terrible texting etiquette emerge … We’re promised fast-paced dialogue\, laugh-out-loud moments\, and gut-punch emotional turns: “if you’ve ever been in a relationship\, had a group chat\, or made a mistake you hoped your partner would never see — this play is for you”. \nSatya Baskaran directs. \nThe play run 12 to 14 September at 7.30pm\, with a 3pm matinée on 13 September.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE To Know Malaysia is to Love Malaysia: Major Highlights from The AFK Collection
DESCRIPTION:A group show by pioneering first-generation Malaysian contemporary artists\, selected from The AFK Collection — the most comprehensive collection of Malaysian contemporary art from the 1980s to the present. Exhbiited artists include Ahmad Shukri Mohammed\, Ahmad Fuad Osman\, Ali Nurazmal\, Anniketyni Madian\, Fauzan Omar\, Hamir Soib\, Masnoor Ramli\, Susyilawati Sulaiman\, Yusof Ghani\, and Zulkifli Yusoff. \nThe featured artists have witnessed Malaysia’s transformation from a largely agrarian\, newly independent country to a modern\, dynamic nation. As well as highlighting the individual artists\, the exhibition will address critical aspects of that journey; by contextualising these works within broader social and political frameworks\, the exhibition aims to create a broader understanding of contemporary Malaysian society.

SUMMARY:Ruba Salameh: Refined Compositions
DESCRIPTION:In the face of genocide\, Palestinian artist Ruba Salameh finds her way forward through abstract painting – weaving her own narrative while connecting across generations to the work of art historian and artist Kamal Boullata. \nThis exhibition reflects primarily on the persistence of certain symbols\, such as the Palestinian flag\, in the work of Palestinian artists. Reducing the colour palette as a gesture encouraged Salameh to revisit an act similar to that of other Palestinian artists before her\, as an act of reclamation. It revealed how\, even with the passing of time\, these visual elements have remained charged with urgency and continue to inhabit the thoughts and practices of Palestinian artists. \nTo 9 November.

SUMMARY:Public Art Abu Dhabi Biennial: Bik Van der Pol’s The poem that jumps the fence
DESCRIPTION:Artist duo Bik Van der Pol (Liesbeth Bik and Jos Van der Pol) engage in collaborative projects on how art constructs public spaces for speculative thought and collective creativity. The poem that jumps the fence features weekly performances on Abu Dhabi Beach and workshops connecting words and sand as real and symbolic material that binds our world; every Sunday afternoon\, a performer writes a poem in the sand\, only for it to fade away. During workshops in collaboration with local poets and writers\, participants generate text for the performances. \n  \n

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Naeemeh Kazemi: Bubble Land
DESCRIPTION:A solo show for an artist whose distinctive approach to visual storytelling lies in her ability to blend hyperrealism with dreamlike distortion. In this series\, a follow-on from her gorgeous but unsettling La La Land works\, her paintings transform the sea into a metaphor for modern existence where joy and anxiety coexist\, and spectacle conceals fragility\, turning the ocean into a theatrical\, disorienting place filled with bioluminescent creatures\, clown-like figures\, and confetti-like bubbles; every detail serves as a fragment of a larger\, immersive universe where beauty and unease intertwine – and where despite the chaos there is a space to pause\, reflect\, and immerse in a universe that resists simplification.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Morteza Khazaie: Upside Down
DESCRIPTION:Khazaie’s solo show is inspired by nature\, particularly by trees that bend in the face of wind and storms yet do not break. These symbolise resilience and flexibility; just as in life\, people too change under pressure and harsh conditions\, being guided towards new paths. The artist’s craftsmanship and thoughtful use of wood create pieces that are both grounded and transformative\, resonating with the themes of survival\, adaptation\, and silent strength. As curator Farshad Mahoutforoush writes; “Trees that yield in storms\, yet continue to grow\, became a metaphor for how we as humans navigate change. This exhibition is my reflection on the ways we adapt\, redirect\, and find new shapes for ourselves under pressure … Through these works\, I wanted to explore how softness can be strength\, and how being ‘upside down’ might simply mean seeing things differently”.

SUMMARY:Mamluks: Legacy of an Empire
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition on the rich heritage of the Mamluk Sultanate\, a dynasty that ruled a vast expanse of territory encompassing the most significant Islamic holy sites for more than 250 years (1250–1517)\, with more than 270 works  gatheredfrom 34 museums and cultural institutions in 13 countries – including objects of art\, glasswork\, metalwork\, ceramics\, textiles\, coinage\, manuscripts and more. Manuel Rabaté\, the Louvre Abu Dhabi’s director\, emphased the international nature of the Mamluk empire: “This exhibition delves into the interactions of the Mamluk Sultanate with Asia\, Africa and Europe\, revealing how interconnected the world was at that time\, and how remarkably aligned in spirit it was with the cosmopolitan nature of contemporary Abu Dhabi”. \nFirst shown at the Musée du Louvre as the first major European showcase dedicated to the Mamluk Sultanate\, this edition of Mamluks: Legacy of an Empire is curated by Dr. Souraya Noujaim\, Director of the Department of Islamic Art at Musée du Louvre (General Curator)\, and Dr. Carine Juvin\, Curator for the Medieval Near East Collection\, Department of Islamic Art\, at Musée du Louvre (Scientific Curator)\, with the support of Fakhera Alkindi\, Senior Curatorial Assistant at Louvre Abu Dhabi. \nTo 25 January. \nAbove: Anon\, The Reception of the Venetian Ambassadors in Damascus’\, 1511

SUMMARY:Hester Street: dir Joan Micklin Silver (1975)
DESCRIPTION:Carol Kane is extraordinary as a Jewish immigrant arriving in late 19th-century New York with her young son Yossele (Paul Freedman) to join a husband (Steven Keach) who she hasn’t seen in three years. He’s embraced the new world and regards his wife as a throwback to a culture that he desperately wants to forget; she finds it hard to adapt to the new life\, too attached to the traditions of her former community to envelop herself fully in New York’s modernity. It could’ve been gloomy\, the underbelly f the Gilded Age\, but in fact it’s an entertaining and humorous film that earned Kane an Oscar nomination.

SUMMARY:Marwan Bassiouni: New Western Views (Preview)
DESCRIPTION:This first solo exhibition in the region for Bassiouni offers a first look at an ongoing international project that reframes landscape photography through the lens of lived Muslim presence in the contemporary West. Each of these photographs – taken from inside mosques across the Netherlands\, Switzerland\, and the UK – centres on a window\, an aperture on to the outside world that is rarely found in purpose-built mosques. Through them we glimpse familiar Western landscapes: traffic junctions\, supermarkets\, apartment blocks\, sports fields. But these views are framed by examples of Islamic visual culture – patterned tiles\, rugs\, wooden minbars\, and more. \nNew Western Views is a counterpoint to a long history of Orientalist image-making. Bassiouni’s landscapes are no longer the backdrop for conquest\, curiosity\, or romanticisation; they are simply what exists outside the mosque window. In doing so\, the work avoids the familiar tropes of victimhood or spectacle … \nTo 5 November. \nAbove: Marwan Bassiouni\, New British Views #06\, England (2021)

SUMMARY:Elias Izoli: Inside Out ‘25
DESCRIPTION:After a long break from painting\, Izoli has returned with a new body of work centred around “the circus of life” – Izoli uses the circus as a metaphor for the unpredictability and complexity of life as a Syrian citizen. The circus and its family become a symbol of the broader social body\, with each character representing the individuals who comprise the state’s fabric \nRendered in his signature style of fragmented colours\, each portrait speaks of resilience\, illusion\, and “the spectacle of existence”. Each character is confined within their own space\, each gesture reflects the emotional weight and psychological barriers imposed by our world. The figures seem unable to escape or engage with a reality beyond their own world. \nTo 7 November. \nAbove: Elias Izoli\, Untitled (2024)

SUMMARY:Abdelkader Benchamma: Rumors from the Skies
DESCRIPTION:Says the gallery: “Drawing on literature\, philosophy\, and astrophysics\, Benchamma transforms celestial phenomena into symbolic landscapes that invite us to move beyond the material and the real\, into dimensions where the rational and the fantastical coexist”. For his third solo exhibition here\, the French-Algerian artist has taken inspiration from Kometenbuch (The Comet Book)\, a 16th-century Flemish treatise depicting comets and fantastical apparitions; Benchamma suggests how astronomy and astrology\, science and folklore\, continue to overlap in shaping our perception of the cosmos via a new body of intricate ink drawings and landscapes . Meteorites\, crying stones\, and shooting stars drift across forests and horizons\, hovering between recognition and mystery; there’s also a monumental mural paired with a projected animation that extends this vision into immersive territory\, opening onto swirling\, otherworldly sequences of light\, texture\, and form. \nTo 2 November. \nAbove: Abdelkader Benchamma\, Komentenbuch – Couronne (2025)

SUMMARY:Mahmoud El Safadi: Personal Sea
DESCRIPTION:Exhibiting for the first time in Dubai\, Lebanese artist Mahmoud El Safadi is showing a collection of miniature paintings on playing cards\, a series of works that reflect on the Mediterranean as a site of memory\, inheritance\, and continuity – “a littoral space that is at once connective and exclusionary\, communal and privatised\, fluid and heavily policed”. Referencing the card game ‘quatorze’\, Safadi layers imagery across the cards to create “a visual palimpsest where personal and inherited memory converge with broader histories of struggle\, surveillance\, and belonging”. \nThe backstory lies in the fact that the artist shares the same name as his grandfather\, who served with the British between 1939 and 1946. His grandfather’s silence about those years\, a time of war\, empire\, and displacement\, becomes an absence that El Safadi approaches through archival research\, fragmentary narratives\, and speculative painting. \nTo 2 November. \nAbove: Mahmoud El Safadi\, Personal sea (2025)

DESCRIPTION:Bernhard Buhmann curates this group show based on the idea that plunging downwards is both terrifying and liberating – the gallery quotes Andrea Roelig: “We stand between death and life\, and decline is dangerously enticing because it also carries an element of seduction”.
