SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Through the Seasons with Eric Carle
DESCRIPTION:For the first time in the region\, the work of the noted illustrator and children’s book author (more than 70 titles to his name\, including of course The Very Hungry Caterpillar) is celebrated through Carle’s brilliant imagery of the seasons\, from hibernating bears in winter and hatching chicks in spring to colourful flowers in summer and ripe apple trees in the fall. Curated by Reem AlHashimi\, the show features original art – including Carle’s painted tissue-paper collages from nine classic picture books – as well as unpublished work.

SUMMARY:The Mummy: dir Stephen Sommers (1999)
DESCRIPTION:Formulaic but neatly done. Adventurer Rick O’Connell (Brendan Fraser) teams up with librarian Evelyn (Rachel Weisz) and a motley archaeological crew to conquer the vengeful reincarnation of Egyptian priest Imhotep (Arnold Vosloo) for 124 minutes of non-stop action with some great visual effects.

SUMMARY:Cirque Dreams: Elysion
DESCRIPTION:“A breathtaking journey through a land of pure imagination and wonder … an extraordinary adventure into a world of fantasy and awe” promises the blurb\, adding “the audience is transported to an ethereal garden atmosphere\, alive with animated creatures that embody the tranquillity and chaos of nature”. \nIf you think the description of the show – a “vivid\, three-dimensional world is filled with astonishing acrobatics\, captivating choreography\, and beautiful costumes” – sounds like Cirque du Soleil\, you’d be right; although started independently\, Cirque Dreams was acquired by Cirque du Soleil’s owners in 2018 and runs as a kind of junior operation. Its shows are still spectacular demonstrations of modern circus arts and high-tech staging (especially lighting)\, but they tend to be smaller and perhaps less pretentious than the parent company’s productions. \nThe current show apparently draws inspiration from the concept of Elysium\, “a place of perfect happiness and eternal peace” – in Greek mythology it was the paradise where heroes went if the gods had conferred immortality of them. In the Cirque Dreams interpretation with the adapted name it’s rather different\, a garden setting “where every creature\, from the tiniest insect to the grandest display\, contributes to the tapestry of life … The fusion of an immersive production design\, other-worldly costume designs\, and the unparalleled skill of our performers brings this blissful garden to life”. \nThe lustre have gone from the ‘new circus’ idea\, and it’s unlikely that Elysion will “redefine the boundaries of circus artistry and theatricality” as the press release suggests; but it should still make for a decent evening’s entertainment – especially with tickets starting at a modest AED 75. \nIt runs from 23 August to 8 September (two shows a day\, except for the opener) in a purpose built tent in Al Ain Square\, right by Hazza Bin Zayed Stadium. \n23 August 6.30pm\n24 August 3pm and 6.30pm\n25 August 3pm and 6.30pm \n30 August 3pm and 6.30pm\n31 August 3pm and 6.30pm\n1 September 3pm and 6.30pm \n6 September 3pm and 6.30pm\n7 September 3pm and 6.30pm\n8 September 3pm and 6.30pm

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Mona Ayyash: The Clock Doesn’t Care
DESCRIPTION:In her first solo exhibition\, Mona Ayyash presents a collaborative video piece with a group of actors\, dancers\, and performance artists\, focusing on small body movements. Selected through an open call\, the artist’s collaborators committed to a long-term creative process where they contributed to the work by filming themselves responding to movement prompts\, encouraging them to consider what ‘doing nothing’ looks like. The resulting work is a study of repetitive non-functional movements\, without purpose or productivity; it questions the tension between passing time and wasting time.

SUMMARY:Closing Program: Spring 2024 Exhibitions
DESCRIPTION:Most exhibitions open with a bang and close with much less fanfare\, so 421 is to be commended for marking the end of its current shows – Mona Ayyash: The Clock Doesn’t Care and On a Timeline: 2024 MFA Graduate Show – with a programme featuring tours and workshops that give audiences a final chance to experience the exhibitions: \n\n2-5pm: Writing on Watching & Waiting – workshop by Mona Ayyash\n5-6pm: Full guided tour of both exhibitions\n6-8pm: “light dinner”\n\nMona Ayyash’s creative writing workshop mirrors the themes in her exhibition. Attendees are encouraged to observe\, contemplate\, and write as performers engage in a fictional narrative that questions the notion of wasting time\, waiting\, and doing nothing; as with a life drawing session\, participants engage in group discussions and collective creative writing while observing people. \nThe workshop is charged-for at AED 60 (book here) but the exhibition tours are free.

SUMMARY:The Sound of Music: dir Robert Wise (1965)
DESCRIPTION:One of the best loved films of its time\, this sumptuous adaptation of the Rodgers and Hammerstein Broadway show gets renewed punch from a newly restored print of the film. Julie Andrews is of course Maria\, the spirited young governess for the seven unruly von Trapp children (and their father\, played against type by Christopher Plummer). The film deservedly won five Oscars\, including Best Picture\, Best Director and Best Original Music Score.

SUMMARY:The Old Oak: dir Ken Loach (2023)
DESCRIPTION:Sometimes Ken Loach films can seem a bit of a constant battering of messages about social incohesion and unfairness. At their best\, though\, they are suffused with empathy and idealism along with the anger and the black-and-white morality; and The Old Oak is one of those. The Oak itself is a rundown pub\, metaphorically and actually the centre of passes for community in a cash-strapped corner of the north-east of England that has been suffering a slow\, painful decline since the coalmine closures of the 1980s. The arrival of a group of Syrian refugees provides a flashpoint for xenophobic tensions\, but The Old Oak’s landlord strikes up an unlikely friendship with a young female refugee. They find similarities in their situation and come up with a plan to bring the two traumatised communities together … There’s a plea for open-hearted compassion and a message of hope and solidarity in a film which starts so bleakly as a comment on modern Britain. As the Guardian put it\, “Ken Loach could hardly have delivered a more resonant\, timely or indeed angry swansong than this feature which takes up arms against the decay of national compassion and makes a statement of faith in compassion for the oppressed.”. SUMMARY:The Fugitive: dir Andrew Davis (1993)
DESCRIPTION:Harrison Ford is on top form as the Chicago surgeon framed for the murder of his wife who aims to prove his innocence by leading his pursuers (led by Tommy Lee Jones\, playing Tommy Lee Jones) to the man who actually committed the crime. The Cinema Space blurb calls it “a stellar showcase for Ford’s pathos\, physicality\, and intensity”; it’s also a breathless thriller with some brilliant action set pieces that transcends the original TV series by a country mile. Recommended\, especially in this newly restored print.

\nThere are two shows a day at 3pm and 6.30pm in a purpose built tent in Al Ain Square\, right by Hazza Bin Zayed Stadium. SUMMARY:Tom Alban: Validation
DESCRIPTION:An opportunity to see one of the rising stars of British stand-up before he really gets famous (he’s also an actor\, so he has two chances). Expect clever storytelling and relatable anecdotes\, infectious humour\, and really good crowd work … This is a version of a show he previewed at the Normal for Norfolk festival in July; it sold out\, and he was (by all accounts) excellent. The always reliable Imah Dumagay hosts\, the effervescent Arab-Irish comic Sahar Ali has the opening act.

DESCRIPTION:The Culture Foundation’s big summer show is a major survey of four decades of work showcasing the multidisciplinary practice across painting\, drawing\, collage and sculpture of an artist acknoweldged as one of the UAE’s key postmodernists (he was one of the Five founders of contemporary art in the Emirates\, including his brother Hassan\, Abdullah Al Saadi\, Mohammed Kazem and Mohamed Ahmed Ibrahim). \nHussein Sharif worked with various mediums to respond to his surrounding environment and current realties and used recycled materials extensively as a way of processing the seismic changes of UAE society. SUMMARY:The Lost King: dir Stephen Frears (2022)
DESCRIPTION:Based on a true story – the discovery of the remains of Richard III under a Leicester car park in 2021 – this is the story of amateur historian Philippa Langley (Sally Hawkins at her best)\, whose passion and research were met with scepticism by the academic establishment. A tale of discovery\, obsession\, and stolen glory (both then and now)\, The Lost King is a magical adventure illuminated by one woman’s awakened sense of purpose. It’s beautifully acted and very well directed\, too.

SUMMARY:Cie Hervé Koubi: Sol Invictus
DESCRIPTION:The new NYUAD Arts Center season opens with a spectacular new show from the returning Compagnie Hervé Koubi. Koubi is building a reputation for stunning choreography that blends contemporary dance and kinetic urban moves; this piece features no fewer than 17 male and female dancers who perform as a cohesive unit\, emphasising collective responsibility and personal accountability that celebrates the unifying power of dance in a turbulent world. When this show premiered in New York earlier this year the New York Times called it “thrilling … amazing … the dancers’ extraordinary moves are integrated into a poetic vision … the distinctive aesthetic achievement of this company is to make those extraordinary acrobatics and hip-hop power moves feel at times pedestrian\, almost like walking”. \nVery highly recommended\, especially at The Arts Center’s ticket prices; there’s a second performance tomorrow (6 September) \nSol Invictus is presented with the support of Dance Reflections by Van Cleef & Arpels.
