SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Khaled Jarada: Non Key Frame
DESCRIPTION:The title of this exhibition evokes a notion that originates from the world of the moving image. Key frames are those that define a scene in a film; they set its starting as well as ending point\, they are typically the most important frames and so they are the ones into which creators put more thought and spend more time developing. Non-key frames are intermediates\, coming between two crucial moments and defined only through an external reference. In this solo show Khaled Jarada finds a similar hierarchy in specific modes of historiography\, where history is reduced to key moments\, key figures\, key geographies\, and key cultures; his work refutes that rigid hierarchy\, instead elevating those devalued and mundane moments\, places\, objects\, and figures to become worthy of display\, appreciation\, and idealization. His figures appear imbalanced\, anxious\, and out of place. The in-betweenness in these works is spatial as well as temporal …

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Gold and Treasures: 3\,000 Years of Chinese Ornaments
DESCRIPTION:L’ÉCOLE Middle East – Van Cleef and Arpels’ school of jewellery arts– is celebrating its opening in Dubai Design District with this spectacular exhibition. The clue is of course in the name: the pieces on show (a hundred or so of them) come from the Mengdiexuan Collection\, a genuinely outstanding private art collection from Hong Kong\, and spans more than three thousand years of goldsmithing work from China. \nThat in itself is interesting\, for China is better known as a culture that valued bronze\, porcelain and jade rather than gold for high-status artefacts. The Mengdiexuan collection has been assembled by Betty Lo and Kenneth Chu\, partners in business and in life; the Mengdiexuan collection began with a wedding gift from Lo’s father\, a decorating mirror\, which fired their interest in Chinese metalworking. According to Chu\, they were attracted by the creativity on show in gold objects\, combined with the fact that gold was used in Chinese culture primarily as smaller objects and personal ornaments which were eminently collectable. \nThe more familiar genres of bronze\, jade and porcelain are considered among China’s noblest fine arts; when they started\, Betty Lo and Kenneth Chu were taking a step into the unknown. In 30 years of building their collection\, however\, they have become both experts and advocates for Chinese gold. \nOne clear result was the appreciation that China was open to influences from outside its geographic centre\, indeed from outside of China altogether. The collection sheds light on the true diversity of Chinese civilisation. \nThe exhibition runs through many of the key techniques and developments of Chinese goldworking. The oldest pieces employ hammering and chasing techniques\, relatively simple in the earliest work but which by the Tang Dynasty (618–907) had developed into complex ornaments of great delicacy. By that time gold had come to represent divine splendour (the Buddhist paradise was seen as golden) and intellectual virtue (because gold was mined\, it was seen as analogous to human qualities – so the Tang emperor Tai Zong could praise his chief minister for being able to discern and refine the ‘gold’ in men). \nA second craft process featured in the exhibition\, casting\, was derived from bronze metallurgy and in particular has produced magnificent ritual vessels from the Shang to Han eras (roughly contemporary with ancient Rome). Another technique seen in the collection is granulation\, a process of making gold granules that are used as decoration together with inlays of other materials – gems\, glass\, shell inlays. Though lost until the 20th century\, the technique was available to Chinese artisans as early as the Western Han period\, and was fashionable from then well into Tang. \nAnd Chinese goldsmithing probably reached its zenith with gold wire and filigree\, techniques that in the hands of the masters could capture life and movement. \nThe exhibition is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10am to 7pm.

SUMMARY:Susan Doe: Entwined
DESCRIPTION:The first Project Space exhibition of the new season features a series of paintings\, sculptures\, and installations through which Susan Doe explores ideas of intersectionality\, rooted in her own bicultural upbringing. Says the gallery: “Reflecting on her Chinese American background\, the artist blends together disparate elements to create something unexpected. Through this process\, she plays with illusions of materiality\, making metal threads appear soft and weaving paper to mimic large solid sculptures.” To 17 September.

SUMMARY:Summertime: dir David Lean (1955)
DESCRIPTION:David Lean’s lush love letter to Venice was his personal favourite among his own films. A sublimely bittersweet tale of romantic longing\, it also has Katharine Hepburn at her best\, portraying the conflicting emotions in a lonely\, middle-aged American tourist forced to confront her insecurities when she is drawn into a seemingly impossible affair with a charming Italian shopkeeper (Rossano Brazzi); the result isan exquisitely tender evocation of the magic and melancholy of a fleeting\, not-quite-fairytale romance. This is a classic Cinema Space pick\, and very highly recommended.

SUMMARY:Wolfwalkers: dir Tomm Moore\, Ross Stewart (2020)
DESCRIPTION:An excellent Irish animation that combines history and myth in a compelling narrative that explores friendship and difference. A young apprentice hunter journeys to Ireland with her father to wipe out the last wolf pack and befriends Mebh\, a free-spirited girl who’s part of a mysterious tribe rumoured to have the ability to transform into wolves by night. As they search for Mebh’s missing mother\, Robyn uncovers a secret that draws her further into the enchanted world of the Wolfwakers and risks turning into the very thing her father is tasked to destroy … This is the film is the third and final instalment in co-director Tomm Moore’s Irish Folklore Trilogy\, following his previous films The Secret of Kells (2009) and Song of the Sea (2014) – both of which are also recommended.

SUMMARY:Thelma: dir Josh Margolin (2024)
DESCRIPTION:A poignant action-comedy featuring veteran Oscar nominee June Squibb in her first leading role and featuring the final performance of trailblazing blaxploitation legend Richard Roundtree. Squibb is Thelma Post\, a feisty 93-year-old grandmother who gets conned by a phone scammer and sets out to reclaim what was taken from her\, accompanied by an ageing friend (Roundtree) and his motorised scooter. The familiar tropes of the action genre are subverted in hilarious\, age-appropriate ways to tackle ageing with agency … An absolutely brilliant film; Cinema Space is to be commended for putting on this brand new release.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Through the Seasons with Eric Carle
DESCRIPTION:For the first time in the region\, the work of the noted illustrator and children’s book author (more than 70 titles to his name\, including of course The Very Hungry Caterpillar) is celebrated through Carle’s brilliant imagery of the seasons\, from hibernating bears in winter and hatching chicks in spring to colourful flowers in summer and ripe apple trees in the fall. Curated by Reem AlHashimi\, the show features original art – including Carle’s painted tissue-paper collages from nine classic picture books – as well as unpublished work.

SUMMARY:Cirque Dreams: Elysion
DESCRIPTION:“A breathtaking journey through a land of pure imagination and wonder … an extraordinary adventure into a world of fantasy and awe” promises the blurb\, adding “the audience is transported to an ethereal garden atmosphere\, alive with animated creatures that embody the tranquillity and chaos of nature”. \nIf you think the description of the show – a “vivid\, three-dimensional world is filled with astonishing acrobatics\, captivating choreography\, and beautiful costumes” – sounds like Cirque du Soleil\, you’d be right; although started independently\, Cirque Dreams was acquired by Cirque du Soleil’s owners in 2018 and runs as a kind of junior operation. Its shows are still spectacular demonstrations of modern circus arts and high-tech staging (especially lighting)\, but they tend to be smaller and perhaps less pretentious than the parent company’s productions. \nThe current show apparently draws inspiration from the concept of Elysium\, “a place of perfect happiness and eternal peace” – in Greek mythology it was the paradise where heroes went if the gods had conferred immortality of them. In the Cirque Dreams interpretation with the adapted name it’s rather different\, a garden setting “where every creature\, from the tiniest insect to the grandest display\, contributes to the tapestry of life … The fusion of an immersive production design\, other-worldly costume designs\, and the unparalleled skill of our performers brings this blissful garden to life”. \nThe lustre have gone from the ‘new circus’ idea\, and it’s unlikely that Elysion will “redefine the boundaries of circus artistry and theatricality” as the press release suggests; but it should still make for a decent evening’s entertainment – especially with tickets starting at a modest AED 75. \nIt runs from 23 August to 8 September (two shows a day\, except for the opener) in a purpose built tent in Al Ain Square\, right by Hazza Bin Zayed Stadium. \n23 August 6.30pm\n24 August 3pm and 6.30pm\n25 August 3pm and 6.30pm \n30 August 3pm and 6.30pm\n31 August 3pm and 6.30pm\n1 September 3pm and 6.30pm \n6 September 3pm and 6.30pm\n7 September 3pm and 6.30pm\n8 September 3pm and 6.30pm

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Mona Ayyash: The Clock Doesn’t Care
DESCRIPTION:In her first solo exhibition\, Mona Ayyash presents a collaborative video piece with a group of actors\, dancers\, and performance artists\, focusing on small body movements. Selected through an open call\, the artist’s collaborators committed to a long-term creative process where they contributed to the work by filming themselves responding to movement prompts\, encouraging them to consider what ‘doing nothing’ looks like. The resulting work is a study of repetitive non-functional movements\, without purpose or productivity; it questions the tension between passing time and wasting time.

SUMMARY:Closing Program: Spring 2024 Exhibitions
DESCRIPTION:Most exhibitions open with a bang and close with much less fanfare\, so 421 is to be commended for marking the end of its current shows – Mona Ayyash: The Clock Doesn’t Care and On a Timeline: 2024 MFA Graduate Show – with a programme featuring tours and workshops that give audiences a final chance to experience the exhibitions: \n\n2-5pm: Writing on Watching & Waiting – workshop by Mona Ayyash\n5-6pm: Full guided tour of both exhibitions\n6-8pm: “light dinner”\n\nMona Ayyash’s creative writing workshop mirrors the themes in her exhibition. Attendees are encouraged to observe\, contemplate\, and write as performers engage in a fictional narrative that questions the notion of wasting time\, waiting\, and doing nothing; as with a life drawing session\, participants engage in group discussions and collective creative writing while observing people. \nThe workshop is charged-for at AED 60 (book here) but the exhibition tours are free.

SUMMARY:The Sound of Music: dir Robert Wise (1965)
DESCRIPTION:One of the best loved films of its time\, this sumptuous adaptation of the Rodgers and Hammerstein Broadway show gets renewed punch from a newly restored print of the film. Julie Andrews is of course Maria\, the spirited young governess for the seven unruly von Trapp children (and their father\, played against type by Christopher Plummer). The film deservedly won five Oscars\, including Best Picture\, Best Director and Best Original Music Score.
