SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Manjit Bawa: I Was Born a Poet …
DESCRIPTION:Paintings and drawings by Manjit Bawa (1941-2008)\, a modernist master of 20th-century Indian figuration whose work is distinguished by expressive line and colour. \nThe exhibition marks the inauguration of Volte Art Projects’ new Alserkal Avenue space under the name Volte Masters – the focus of which “will be to showcase international modern masters and create new art historical dialogues around their work”. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Fridge Concert Series season 43: Opoku Sanaa and Friends
DESCRIPTION:The Fridge Concert Series has always been A Good Thing – typically new(ish) and local(ish) artists given a decent set in a well-equipped space with a supportive audience – but for International Jazz Day the bookers have made something of a coup with this gig by the renowned Ghanaian bass player\, composer and music entrepreneur\, back on the road after a lengthy hiatus and with a new album (It’s Time) to promote.

SUMMARY:Timur D’Vatz: Arcadian Dreams
DESCRIPTION:A summer-long exhibition of work from one of the gallery’s stalwarts\, Timur D’Vatz\, featuring his signature mix of stylised figures and symbolic settings that owe something to mediaeval European tapestry\, something to Byzantine decoration. The title refers to the dawn of an early mythology\, located in a primeval forest\, manifested through magical flora and fantastic beasts; “there are starry skies and gleaming comets guiding both travellers and wild animals to the source of life\, which appears in the form of a Fountain or a Magical Flower. This is the focal point from where life and knowledge originate …” To 10 September.

SUMMARY:Mr Brainwash
DESCRIPTION:A solo show for the French-born LA-based street artist who started filming graffiti art and subsequently became an artist in his own right after an off-hand suggestion from Banksy. As it happens\, many of the 10 works on show here are reworkings of Banksy originals (there is a persistant rumour that Mr Brainwash was/is Banksy’s alter ego\, or possible vice versa: but Mr Brainwash’s artistic evolution was mapped in Banksy’s 2010 documentary Exit Through The Gift Shop\, and Banksy has confirmed that Mr Brainwash is indeed real and a friend). Mr Brainswash has also deployed other iconic images in his paintings\, notably from Warhol and Haring. The resulting blend of Pop Art and Street Art he describes as his own form of “graffiti hybrid”. To 31 May. \nAbove: Mr Brainwash\, Balloon Girl (2023)

SUMMARY:Sharjah Animation Conference
DESCRIPTION:“We bring together animation enthusiasts\, professionals\, and children to celebrate the art and craft of animation.” This second edition of the conference actually offers a rich programme of workshops\, talks\, screenings\, and exhibitions which seem most suited to the industry; it’s organised by Sharjah Book Authority in partnership with Italy’s Bergamo Animation Days (BAD) and features a roster of heavy speakers from the industry – lots of Europeans\, predictably enough\, but also a good representation from the Arab world. \nHighlights include a Masterclass by artist and director Junichi Hayama\, celebrated for his work on titles like Fist of the North Star; an exhibition from stop-motion specialists Aardman Animation that promises an in-depth look at the studio’s innovative techniques and storytelling prowess\, and a special 30th anniversary screening of The Lion King\, with a presentation from top Disney animator Andreas Deja. \nOne day tickets are AED 280\, the four-day pass is AED 400 (but there were heavy discounts when we last checked). Those prices just buy admission to the event; if you want to attend a workshop\, you’ll pay extra – AED 350 per workshop (and no discounts that we could see). The workshops look particularly good\, an hour long and generally on very practical topics like animating facial expressions and using Storyboard Pro; there are around two dozen of them over the last three days (day one is just the exhibition plus a concert of iconic game soundtracks from the Florence Pops Orchestra).

SUMMARY:Siccità (Drought): dir Paolo Virzi (2022)
DESCRIPTION:In a dystopian present\, it hasn’t rained in Rome for three years: the drought has reduced water reserves to a minimum and there’s an epidemic of sleeping sickness carried by cockroaches. Through a city dying of thirst and prohibitions moves a chorus of people\, young and old\, marginalized and successful\, victims and profiteers. Their lives are linked in a single design\, while each seeks his or her deliverance … “An intelligent\, ambitious modern melodrama with a bracingly cynical streak\,” said one reviewer. \nIn Italian\, subtitled in English. Shows in the NAAS film programme\, a collaboration between several cultural institutions in the UAE: Goethe-Institut Gulf Region\, Embassies of France\, Canada and Switzerland\, and the Italian Cultural Institute

SUMMARY:Every Brilliant Thing
DESCRIPTION:The acclaimed Egyptian theatre-maker Ahmed El Attar adapts and directs an Arabic version of Duncan Macmillan’s powerful\, poignant play – an hour of life and humour about mental health. As her mother battles chronic depression\, the child creates a list of every thing they can think of that makes life worth living; as the child grows\, so does the list. \nThe play features Syrian actress Nanda Mohammad\, alone on an empty stage with only a minimal set\, accessories\, and music. She has the challenging task of balancing the storyline with the energies of the audience\, who are invited to participate and even improvise during the show. \nThe play is performed in Arabic with simultaneous English translation. SUMMARY:Wednesday Night Impro: Maestro
DESCRIPTION:Ten actors converge for a night of scenes\, songs and games based on audience suggestions. After each round you score the players on a scale of 1 to 5\, and the one with the lowest score is eliminated. Eventually only one remains\, to be crowned the Maestro. “Fast-paced\, unpredictable\, and hilarious” says the promo\, and you couldn’t argue with that. As with all Courtyard improv evenings it’s free\, but you need to put your name on the guestlist (via the website); and it’s first-come first-served\, so get there early enough to grab a seat. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Cirque Du Soleil: CRYSTAL
DESCRIPTION:The second weekend for “a truly breathtaking entertainment phenomenon”\, with Cirque du Soleil exploring brand-new creative territory by combining its signature acrobatics with ice-skating. So acrobats and skaters perform on the ice and in the air\, seamlessly combining disciplines from both genres as the ice is transformed into “a dynamic stage where precision skating mingles with awe-inspiring aerial feats and acrobatic prowess”. \nThe technology should be pretty spectacular too – state-of-the-art infrared trackers with 36 spotlights and 28 powerful projectors should create a visually stunning experience for the performers to move through. And no two performances will be exactly alike\, with the action unfolding dynamically around the skaters and acrobats. The soundtrack looks characteristically strong\, too\, with the likes of Sia’s Chandelier\, Sinner Man by Nina Simone\, and A Beautiful Day by U2. \nAs usual with Cirque du Soleil shows\, there’s a storyline – Crystal\, a young girl who feels misunderstood\, goes on a journey of self-discovery and empowerment. The whole show is about looking at things through fresh angles\, peeking through the veneer of everyday life\, and reframing one’s daily realities. \nShow times: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n2 May – 7.30pm\n3 May – 7.30pm\n4 May – 3.30 and 7.30pm\n5 May – 3.30pm

SUMMARY:World Art Dubai 2024
DESCRIPTION:World Art Dubai is back for its tenth edition\, with more than 4\,000 artworks from 300+ galleries and individual artists who come from more than 60- different countries. WAD has grown out of its early days as a simple lo-fi affordable art fair into a bustling\, buzzy four days celebrating art in many of its manifestations. There will be lots of live art performances\, workshops\, street art and fashion\, talks and more alongside the commercial art. It’s still affordable (prices from $100\, we’re told); and since there’s no jury to oversee applications\, it’s likely to be variable in quality. But then that’s all part of the vibe … \nWAD is open 1pm to 9pm. As well as the single adult ticket at AED 25\, there’s reduced-price entry for kids aged 13-18 and family tickets at AED 55 (two adults one child) and AED 65 (two adults\, two children). All of these represent a modest but noticeable increase on 2023 prices …

SUMMARY:The Ice Hole
DESCRIPTION:This is an English version of an award-winning French comedy from 2021\, Les Gros Patinent Bien\, by Pierre Guillois and Olivier Martin-Salvan. That was a story which began with boxes: in the corner of a rehearsal room\, deprived of stage and audience by the pandemic\, Guillois and Martin-Salvan – long-term friends who work as a double act – came across some cardboard and began to improvise situations using the apparently thankless material. \nThey reworked the original for an Anglophone audience at last year’s Edinburgh Festival as The Ice Hole. There were rave reviews for a show that has an imposing Shakespearian actor telling incredible stories of a man journeying through Europe under the curse of a mermaid he’d absent-mindedly caught in a fjord. The actor is accompanied by a put-upon flunky (maybe a stage manager?) who strives with the help of hastily-scribbled cardboard signs and boxes to help us understand the meaning of this journey … \nIt’s fun\, mad as trumpets\, with echoes of Monty Python\, Laurel and Hardy\, and the Mighty Boosh; and it’s well worth an evening of your time. \nMatthew T Corbett directs Sadiq Saboowala and Patrick Albrecht for Complices Théâtre. There are further shows on 4 and 5 May.

DESCRIPTION:The New-York based artist gets her first show in the UAE\, featuring works she created in Dubai during her time at the NIKA Project Space Research and Residency programme – monumental watercolour triptychs that relate to the narratives and histories of women immigrants. Muromtseva is known for her socially engaged practice and large-scale paintings\, videos\, and installations that refer to personal and collective memory; these works are based on interactions the artist had with immigrants\, both in the USA and during a month-long visit to the UAE as part of the residency. The resulting watercolours aim to capture the resilience of these women and delve into themes of home\, borders\, refugees\, and human destinies.

SUMMARY:Drawing Time: Duets
DESCRIPTION:New and historical works by 15 intergenerational artists in the Sharjah Art Foundation Collection that explore drawing as a practice. The exhibition grew out of a two-year research project into conserving paper; it seeks to re-examine the very nature of drawing as a culturally situated disciplinary practice – one that begins in the mind and extends into myriad material forms. It also delves into the concept of the double\, the pair\, the rejoinder: “acts of repetition accumulate through a curated scenography\, in which artistic duets – duos who dance and sing together\, who\, through the right dissonance or imperfect resonance\, find themselves in a state of harmony – guiding visitors across a century in time”. \nThe artists included in the exhibition are Baya\, Mounir Canaan\, Kimathi Donkor\, Ibrahim El-Salahi\, Theaster Gates\, Kamala Ibrahim Ishag\, Claudette Johnson\, Amal Kenawy\, Helen Khal\, Omer Khairy\, David Koloane\, Farideh Lashai\, Ibrahim Massouda\, Eduard Puterbrot and Hassan Sharif. \nTo 4 August. \nAbove: Omer Khairy\, Untitled (1983)

SUMMARY:Todes Ballet Alla Duhova: Attention
DESCRIPTION:Spectacular and crowd-pleasing genre-crossing work from Moscow’s hottest contemporary dance company\, created by celebrity choreographer Alla Duhova in 1986 and still led by her. There’s nothing academic about their work – their styles range from ballet to break via hip-hop and jazz – and this show promises “cutting-edge choreography\, exciting stories\, fantastic costumes\, fashionable music\, and innovative lighting and graphics solutions”\, which at the least sounds comprehensive. There are performances at 3pm and 8pm; the ticket also buys you a 20 percent discount on food and drink at Jumeirah Zabeel Saray.

SUMMARY:Miramar Al Nayyar: Moving Through the Ether
DESCRIPTION:A collection of abstract figurative works on canvas\, “inviting viewers into a realm of recognition and constant metamorphosis … Each 190 x 120cm canvas serves as a conduit for Miramar’s endeavour to encapsulate the essence of the natural formations of the desert. Eschewing representation\, Miramar aims to distil the essence of these natural phenomena that also lie within natural movement; her bodily movement\, onto her canvases —the intricate textures\, lifeforms\, and undulating terrain—evoking a sense of abstracted organic forms.” To 30 May.
