SUMMARY:Some seasons: Fereydoun Ave and the Laal Collection\, 1959-2019
DESCRIPTION:Over the past five decades\, artist\, curator\, designer and collector Fereydoun Ave (b. 1945) has assembled a singular collection of modern and contemporary Iranian art inflected by personal history\, friendship\, sensibility and circumstance. \nA linchpin figure\, Ave returned to Iran in 1970 after years of education abroad\, organising groundbreaking exhibitions at the Iran-America Society’s Tehran cultural centre and the Zand Gallery\, while also serving as resident designer at the avant-garde Theatre Workshop (Kargah-e Namayesh). He remained in Iran after the 1979 Revolution and went on to launch 13 Vanak\, an irreverent independent arts space in the disused garden shed of an iconic Tehran square. 13 Vanak ran for over two decades\, incubating and launching the careers of countless artists. \nAve\, who is an accomplished artist himself\, serves as both subject and cipher of this presentation\, which brings together works by over 30 artists\, a unique vantage onto the fascinating – and contested – cultural history of 20th and 21st century Iran. \nFeaturing more than 30 artists from his collection\, this exhibition highlights five decades of modern and contemporary Iranian art\, shaped by personal history\, friendship\, sensibility and circumstance. \nFeatured artists in Galleries 9 and 10 include: Shirin Aliabadi\, Yaghoub Amaemehpich\, Nazgol Ansarinia\, Fereydoun Ave\, Haydeh Ayazi\, Ashurbanipal Babilla\, Sadra Baniasadi\, Leyly Matine-Daftary\, Davood Emdadian\, Parvaneh Etemadi\, Monir Shahroudy Farmanfarmaian\, Raana Farnoud\, Shahab Fotouhi\, Ali Golestaneh\, Ramin Haerizadeh\, Rokni Haerizadeh\, Arash Hanaiae\, Khosrow Hassanzadeh\, Sirak Melkonian\, Yashar Samimi Mofakham\, Ardeshir Mohasses\, Houman Mortazavi\, Farhad Moshiri\, Nikzad Nodjoumi\, Iman Raad\, Behjat Sadr\, Bijan Saffari\, Mostafa Sarabi\, Mamali Shafahi\, Reza Shafahi\, Shideh Tami\, Cy Twombly\, Manouchehr Yektai\, and Hossein-Ali Zabehi. \nCurated by Negar Azimi and Sohrab Mohebbi\, the exhibition debuted at the 58th Carnegie International; this expanded iteration is presented by Art Jameel in partnership with the Carnegie Museum of Art\, Pittsburgh. \nTo 24 March.

SUMMARY:Victor Ekpuk: INTERwoven TEXTures
DESCRIPTION:The Nigerian-American artist’s solo debut in the Middle East is an exhibition of painting and sculpture that continues his exploration of Nsibidi\, an ancient Nigerian graphic communication system. \nA tribute to the power of dialogue and collective human experiences\, this new body of work – developed during a residency at NYUAD – sees the artist return to the use of wood\, a medium that he employed regularly in the 1990s and 2000s while living in Lagos. Also on show: four new metal sculptures and two previously unseen works on canvas. \nThe pieces are painted with Ekpuk’s own unique language of abstraction\, made up of intricate scripture\, symbols and mark-making inspired by the pictograms of Nsibidi to confront the heritage and history of the African diaspora as a means of considering its present and its future. \nIt also provokes viewers to consider the wide-ranging nature of calligraphy\, spiritual art and writings used within sacred spaces; and this exhibition forms part of the inaugural Dubai Calligraphy Biennale (1 – 31 October)\, of which Efie Gallery is a partner. Ekpuk also will be unveiling a specially commissioned public installation in d3 for the Calligraphy Biennale. Measuring 4m high and 6m wide\, Ekpuk’s interactive aluminium installation is also covered in his Nsibidi-inspired symbolic script. \nTo 21 November.

SUMMARY:Sahand Hesamiyan: Prolepsis
DESCRIPTION:The Third Line’s third solo exhibition with Sahand Hesamiyan is a collection of sculptures that celebrate his dedication to steel as a 3D medium and shine a light on a number of long-cherished yet unrealised projects. \nWhile Hesamiyan is known for ambitious large-scale works\, this show presents miniatures of projects that remain unrealised but not forgotten. By blending the precise geometric principles of Islamic architecture with his own minimalistic sensibilities\, this work not only highlights the fundamental design and conceptual significance but also underscores their pivotal role in shaping the history of Islamic art. \nTo 3 November. \nAbove: Sahand Hesamiyan\, Kanoon I (2020)

SUMMARY:Saher Nassar: The Front Side Strikes the Most
DESCRIPTION:Soldiers undergo rigorous training\, sometimes bordering on indoctrination\, to execute commands often beyond their personal desires or intentions. They become pieces in a domino effect\, operating in environments they cannot control. \nThe latest works by Saher Nassar examine the psychology of the soldier and the tangible actions they impose on others\, adopting an observational rather than a scientific approach. It remains neutral\, with neither judgment nor apologies. \nThe exhibition is curated by Giuseppe Moscatello. \nTo 30 December \nAbove: Saher Nassar\, Children of the Occupation (2023)

SUMMARY:Mariam Abbas: Terra Ephemera
DESCRIPTION:Mariam Abbas is an Emirati illustrator\, designer\, and visual artist influenced by the architecture\, botany\, and the rich cultural backdrop that surrounds her. In particular\, she finds that architecture can narrate tales of the past\, while botanical gems convey cultural and historical significance. Her practice manifests through intricate illustrations\, contemporary paintings\, and sculpture\, though predominantly she uses acrylics and pen and ink.

SUMMARY:Jehangir Vazifdar: A 60 Year Retrospective
DESCRIPTION:The late 60s and 70s were a time when the Indian sensibility found fresh voice\, a time when new styles\, techniques and visions came into the light. To some he will be known as the architect of some of Mumbai’s iconic buildings\, yet Jehangir Vazifdar is a significant part of that resplendent period in modern Indian Art; his work always reflected current ideas\, yet remained unique and original. As the gallery puts it\, “he was a visionary … who believed that to create something non-existent in nature\, one must study the various forms created by nature and use the simplest shapes – straight lines\, symmetrical patterns\, uniformity of texture and the colour deep black”. \nThis looks like a rare opportunity to see a variety of work from a prolific artist and relentless experimenter\, stretching his craft beyond the traditional boundaries of oil and canvas. Overlap Art was a series of smaller works in fluent felt-pen strokes on printed magazine covers; his ‘Fake-Proof Art’\, another example of his imaginative approach\, involved applying paint in thick layers\, then carved through them with a foot rule to create a textured effect that was impossible to replicate. And his achievements also included a unique Dictionary of Colour that graded colours and interpreting their meaning. \nTo 10 November. \nAbove: Jehangir Vazifdar\, The Embrace

SUMMARY:Ali Cha’aban: I Guess I Am Still Angry
DESCRIPTION:Within the depths of our memories lie fragments of our childhood utopias. This exhibition seeks to examine the potency of these recollections\, exploring how they shape our understanding of the world and influence our desires for a better future. Nostalgic utopias often emerge from a longing for a time when the world seemed simpler and more hopeful. Through his work\, Ali aims to challenge societal narratives and stereotypes surrounding identity and anger\, while highlighting its potential as a catalyst for positive change and personal growth; in this exhibition the artist wants to revisit old memories as well as old artworks\, that shaped him to become who he is today. To 10 November.

SUMMARY:Shambhavi Singh: To see a world in a grain of sand ...
DESCRIPTION:Singh appropriates\, distorts\, and symbolically creates surfaces and patterns within nature; raised in a farming family\, it is the rural landscape\, the farmer\, and agricultural implements that find form in her practice.\nSo the sickle\, used primarily for harvesting or reaping\, is magnified in scale not just as an implement but a metaphor. It becomes a ‘point of entry’\, where eight hundred sickles multiply to become birds in flight. Woven sieves become recollections of hidden narratives of those women at work – husking the grain … Singh merges the perceptual and conceptual knowledge in ever-changing forms. \nThis exhibition is curated by Sasha Altaf. \nTo 27 October.

SUMMARY:MULTIVERSE by klove
DESCRIPTION:You don’t often find glass and light fittings presented as art in Dubai\, so this show could be interesting. Prateek Jain and Gautam Seth established klove studio in New Delhi in 2005\, since when it has built a reputation for its installations – especially the interplay of glass\, light\, and artisanship. This exhibition features glass-plus-light sculptures from the past 15 years. To 10 November.

SUMMARY:Inked in time
DESCRIPTION:Custot’s new show is a group exhibition of works on paper\, by Fernando Botero\, Richard Höglund\, Marc Quinn\, Pablo Reinoso\, Bernar Venet and Fabienne Verdier. \nHöglund’s magnifies the interaction of ink and paper\, highlighting the fluid and marking properties of ink in nuanced shades. Watercolours by the late Colombian master Fernando Botero shows jovial portraits in his signature style with the delicacy\, fluidity\, and transparency of coloured inks. Venet’s etchings emphasise the artist’s iconic geometrical style of the artist; angles and lines become collapsed\, in a study on equilibrium\, randomness\, and the physical laws ruling our universe. Works on paper by Fabienne Verdier are spread throughout the gallery\, mostly studies of Mont Sainte-Victoire in France inspired by her decade of learning with the last remaining masters of Chinese calligraphy. Marc Quinn champions what he calls ‘’a different kind of heroism” in drawings that deal with the unreal image of the idolized body: fashion model and media icon Kate Moss\, presented here as an idealized figure more akin to a cultural hallucination than an actual person. And Whimsical Chinese ink drawings by Pablo Reinoso recall our experiences of lockdown during the pandemic. Characters and abstract shapes symbolise the dichotomy between distance and interconnectedness that characterized our lockdowns. \nTo 26 November. \nAbove: Bernar Venet\, Acute Angles – Disorder (2022)

SUMMARY:Alserkal Lates
DESCRIPTION:The new season’s first open-all-evening mini-festival at Alserkal Avenue. It’s the mix as before\, only more so – the galleries are staying open late\, most with brand new shows\, and so are the eateries and coffee shops. But added to that is a collection of “soundscapes\, multimedia exhibitions\, and live music performance” for “an evening of cultural discovery”. \nThis year the Yard will be home to new botanical and architectural features – greening by Zain Masud\, architecture by T.Sakhi – to celebrate local craftsmanship and rediscover native plants. A specially commissioned soundscape by Safeya Alblooshi (“an immersive sonic creation that intricately weaves together the past\, present\, and potential future of The Yard”) will also be revealed on the night. \nProgramming will take place throughout the evening with free music from the rather good The Tasty Biscuits performing in The Yard at 7pm and the excellent Majaz in The Fridge Warehouse at 8.30pm; a series of Slow Art Walks touring around some of the art exhibitions; the oldest waterhole cam in Africa (Djuma Private Game Reserve) and the world Wild Earth on the Yard’s new screens; and a world music-Arabic Folk open venue concert at The Fridge.

SUMMARY:Costa Brava\, Lebanon: dir Mounia Akl (2021)
DESCRIPTION:A couple decide to leave the toxic pollution and social unrest of Beirut\, hoping to build a utopian existence in the mountains. It’s a strong story\, beautifully acted; the result is something of a love letter to Lebanon\, a political statement\, an environmental reflection\, and above all a commentary on society. One of the three features being screened at the Museum of the Future in a short Climate Film Festival\, and highly recommended. Free with general admission to the museum (AED 149).

SUMMARY:Blane De St Croix: Horizon
DESCRIPTION:The Art Gallery at NYUAD opens its new season with works from a sculptor who works on the relationship between people and landscape and in particular the landscape of climate change. His practice is based on extensive field research; over a series of residencies at NYUAD over the last year\, he has developed two major new bodies of work that are rooted in his study of the UAE’s specific landscapes and region – including a collaboration with Joanna Settle from the university’s the theatre department. \nWe’re expecting something special from this show. His last major exhibition\, at Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art a couple of years ago\, was titled How to move a landscape; it represented a multilayered reflection on climate change and the creeping environmental catastrophe\, how manmade physical changes to the landscape sit on aeons of geological time\, how the changes will win out whatever we do. It was a show with political comment and wit alongside the doomy inevitability; as one review put it\, “the thing about moving a landscape is you can’t”. \nThe Horizon exhibition includes the two new bodies of work along with a number of other never-before-shown works. \nTo 21 January. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Matilda The Musical
DESCRIPTION:The multi-award-winning musical (it has won more than 99 international awards) inspired by the Roald Dahl book touches down in Dubai for what has to be one of the highlights of the season. As the New York Post put it\, “Once in a blue moon\, a show comes out blazing and restores your faith in broadway. Matilda the Musical is that show”. \nThe script by Tony Award-winning playwright Dennis Kelly is excellent\, sticking close enough to the original but making the most of the live-action theatricality of the stage; Tim Minchin’s original songs are terrific\, mixing wit with sing-along choruses. And it’s a Royal Shakespeare Company production\, which is itself an assurance of quality and professionalism. The premium ticket price should be worth it … \nMatilda The Musical is directed by Matthew Warchus. Sets and costumes are by Rob Howell\, with choreography by Peter Darling. All three are also Tony winners\, along with the lighting director Hugh Vanstone. Matilda the Musical plays daily at 8pm between 3 and 7 October\, with a 7.30pm show on 8 October; there are also 2pm matinées on 7 and 8 October\, though we understand these are now sold out (as ever\, there may be returns). The cast take a break on 9 October and performances resume on 10 to 15 October.

SUMMARY:Trevor Noah: Off the Record
DESCRIPTION:Trevor Noah’s The Daily Show landed a record seven Emmy nominations this year; but he’s rather wasted in that talk-show-host role\, IMO\, for he’s a consummate standup performer – especially for large auditoriums – with sold out shows on five continents. Noted for his sharp wit and intelligent commentary on people\, politics\, racism and nationalism\, and occasionally himself\, he’s also good at the downright silly stuff too; the Guardian summarised his last UK show with “ Noah is a master of classic standup and has mass appeal in the best possible way”. He’s in the middle of a 28-city US tour for this show\, a year-long schedule he started back in January just after his final appearance as host on The Daily Show. This gig should attract 12\,000 paying customers\, and that will make it the UAE’s largest ever comedy night … Recommended.
