SUMMARY:The Territory Dreams Back
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition of newly commissioned and recent works by Rajni Perera\, Sancintya Mohini Simpson\, Soma Surovi Jannat\, Karan Shrestha and Rain Wu – five artists whose work offers different perspectives on our relationship with place. \nThe exhibition moves between mythology and memory\, migration and ecology\,political power and the systems through which places are mapped and organised. Says the gallery: “At its heart is the idea that places are shaped by more than their physical geography – land and water hold histories and memories; stories and beliefs influence how landscapes are understood; political decisions affect who can access and control land; and maps and infrastructure can change the environments they set out to describe”. \nTo 15 January. \nImage: Rajni Perera. SUMMARY:Fabienne Verdier: From Song to Light
DESCRIPTION:A solo show for the French abstract painter whose work melds the aesthetics of Western art – line\, action and abstraction – with the principles of traditional Eastern art\, such as unity\, spontaneity and asceticism. Verdier paints vertically using giant brushes and custom-made tools\, suspended from the studio ceiling and positioned directly above the canvas. \nTo 16 January.

SUMMARY:Malik Thomas Jalil Kydd: As I Bask in Your Light\, it Seeps to My Soul
DESCRIPTION:Malik Thomas Jalil Kydd’s second solo exhibition marks a significant evolution in his practice\, says the gallery – “one in which desire and divinity are intertwined and rendered in quiet persistence”. Previous works often situated their subjects within expansive landscapes\, imbued with a mythological presence; this time the figures shift throughout domestic interiors and intimate encounters\, all the while becoming increasingly human; “they are no longer vessels for projection alone but subjects encountered in their own right”. \nTo 5 January. \nImage: Malik Thomas Jalil Kydd\, Bather basked in moonlight (2026\, detail)

SUMMARY:Yaw Owusu: Where the Tide Flows\, and the Dunes Gather
DESCRIPTION:The Ghanain artist’s second solo exhibition with Efie Gallery extends Owusu’s longstanding exploration of value\, currency\, and the social structures through which worth is assigned and perceived; it features textured canvases\, mixed media sculptures\, and – for the first time in his practice – works on paper. \nWorking with materials already embedded within systems of exchange\, Owusu considers currency as more than an economic instrument\, approaching it as a social language through which hierarchies of worth are constructed and maintained. Through accumulation\, repetition\, and transformation\, materials assigned little individual value take on an imposing presence\, challenging the assumptions that determine what is considered precious. \nTo 10 January.

SUMMARY:Faris Alshafar: Everybody Changes Underwater
DESCRIPTION:The first solo exhibition by Emirati artist Faris Alshafar features new oil paintings that mark his move from monochrome into colour. Says the gallery: “The works explore how we alter our appearance and behaviour in response to desire and expectation\, whether internally cultivated or externally imposed. Palettes thaw from glacial to nautical to terrestrial before vaporising into placeless places. Forms are hung like marionettes across load-bearing negative spaces\, held or erased by forces unseen\, while glyph-like gestures evocative of shells\, clock hands and candles recur from one painting to the next …Drawing on music\, video games and everyday moments in which people change how they act and look\, the paintings unfold like episodes\, each with its own pictorial logic”. \nImage: Faris Alshafar\, Chocolate (2026\, detail)

SUMMARY:The Days Go On: 20 Years of Ayyam Gallery
DESCRIPTION:This is sure to be one of the shows of the year\, and not just because of its scale. Ayyam’s 20th-anniversary exhibition seeks to honour a journey defined by continuity\, resilience\, and artistic exchange\, says the gallery; and\, “much like the gallery’s programming\, the exhibition is conceived as a visceral experience\, a story that has withstood the test of time …” \nAlongside co-curators Safwan Dahoul and Ali Kaaf\, director Maya Samawi aims to bring together works by all the artists who have shaped Ayyam over the past twenty years. Each of the curators represents a continuous artistic timeline in which the past and present remain undeniably connected; “Ayyam’s twenty years are not merely a measure of time. They constitute a living history – one that continues to unfold”. \nThe exhibition will feature works by an extraordinary roster of contemporary Middle Eastern artists: \n2006:\nYoussef Abdelke\nSafwan Dahoul\nMounzer Kamnakache\nFadi Yazigi\nAbdullah Murad \n2007:\nAssad Arabi\nNassouh Zaghlouleh\nMouneer Al Shaarani\nWalid El Masri\nKais Salman\nNihad Al Turk\nMouteea Murad\nMohannad Orabi\nOmran Younes\nAbdul Karim Majdal Al-Beik \n2008:\nAmmar Al-Beik\nAsma Fayoumi\nSamia Halaby\nTammam Azzam\nLeila Nseir\nMoustafa Fathi \n2009:\nOthman Moussa\nOussama Diab\nKhaled Takreti\nThaier Helal\nNadim Karam \n2010:\nRima Salamoun\nElias Izoli \n2011:\nSadik Kwaish Alfraji\nMohamad Badr\nLara Zankoul\nLara Attallah \n2012:\nAmmar Abd Rabbo \n2013:\nFarzad Kohan Mousawi\nAfshin Pirhashemi\nFaisal Samra\nAbdulnasser Gharem \n2014:\nFathallah Zamroud\nShurooq Amin\nMohammad Bozorgi \n2015:\nSama Alshaibi\nNoor Bahjat \n2016:\nRula Halawani\nKhaled Jarrar\nRashed Al Shashai \n2017:\nRoshanak Aminelahi\nAbdalla Al Omari \n2018:\nRashid Al Khalifa \n2022:\nMuatasim Alkubaisy \n2024:\nKhaled Akil \n2025:\nAthar Jaber\nAli Kaaf \nTo 1 January.

SUMMARY:Reynier Llanes: Elsewhere\, Within
DESCRIPTION:Reynier Llanes’ second solo exhibition at Firetti Contemporary includes works from The Tourist and The Poet series plus the debut of Bodega\, a new series in which the human figure gives way to transparent vessels overflowing with flowers. “Moving between the real and imagined\, the exhibition explores how places\, people and experiences shape who we become and what we carry forward …  Across Elsewhere\, Within\, boundaries between figure and landscape\, past and present\, and the lived and imagined remain fluid. The worlds we pass through never entirely disappear; something of them remains within us”. \nTo 16 January.

SUMMARY:Beyond the Book Club: Sense and Sensibility
DESCRIPTION:An afternoon dedicated to Jane Austen’s novel of love\, family\, heartbreak\, and societal expectations (which of course you could say about most of her novels. Maybe not Northanger Abbey …) This sort-of book club with tea and good conversation will revisit the Dashwood’s milieu to investigate whether Austen’s sharp observations about love and human nature still ring true today (and maybe whether the recent film was as good as Ang Lee’s). “Whether you’re a lifelong Austen admirer or discovering her work for the first time\, join fellow book lovers for an afternoon celebrating the enduring charm\, wit\, and wisdom of Sense and Sensibility …”

SUMMARY:History Otherwise: Women Modernists from the Arab World
DESCRIPTION:Curated by Suheyla Takesh and Rémi Homs\, this exhibition features works from the Barjeel Art Foundation collection\, including pieces by Inji Efflatoun\, Samia Halaby and Mona Saudi; it also has some archival exhibition posters dating from the 1940s to the 1990s\, highlighting the often-overlooked presence and influence of women artists in the region. \nThe works move across painting\, sculpture\, textiles and other media\, and the exhibition has four interconnected sections. ‘Introspecting’ examines portraiture as a way of seeing individuals and the relationships around them. ‘Documenting’ considers artistic responses to social life and political change. ‘Abstracting’ turns to experiments in form and visual language. And ‘Crafting’ places material knowledge and methods of making within the development of modern art. \nThe exhibition forms a central part of Alserkal Art Week (15 to 22 November) alongside gallery exhibitions\, guest projects and cultural programmes across the Avenue. \nImage: Meriem Meziane\, Women’s Orchestra from Rif (1969)

SUMMARY:Sliman Mansour: Promises and Scars
DESCRIPTION:A mini-retrospective for Sliman Mansour during Alserkal Art Week 2026 covering five decades of his work – “the first time since 2011 that such an extensive body of the artist’s work has been brought together in a single exhibition”\, says Fann à Porter\, which is organising it. \nThe works in this exhibition demonstrate how Mansour experimented with forms and materiality with an open eye to their politics. Mansour’s idealised landscapes and figures are celebrated for introducing a people to itself – images that promise a progressive anti-colonial romance with a guaranteed happy ending\, in which an oppressed people march confidently towards a destined freedom. \nMansour died in August. “This exhibition was originally planned to open in April in his presence; it now opens in his bitter absence.” \nImage: Sliman Mansour\, AlQuds – Metal (2003)

DESCRIPTION:A thrilling\, child-friendly musical-thriller adaptation of Shakespeare’s play of shenanigans in the Scottish court with daggers and added witches. \nThe S4K (Shakespeare for Kidz) team has been bringing the world of Shakespeare to young people around the world for more than 25 years\, and their adaptations make for an ideal introduction. They were at the Cultural Foundation a year ago with A Midsummer Night’s Dream\, and it was excellent. \nThere are performances at 11am and 3pm; it lasts about 90 minutes. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Sebastian Mayer: Hannibaby and Zarafa
DESCRIPTION:Two further performances of Sebastian Mayer’s Hannibaby and Zarafa. Hannibaby manifests as a walkabout performance by a life-sized baby elephant puppet\, alongside a workshop series instructing families in the art of creating and decorating their own 3D elephant masks. It also includes family-friendly movement games and other playful puppetry activities. Zarafa retraces the journey of the first giraffe in France as a life-size giraffe puppet that conducts walkabouts for audiences and plays host to a community canvas at Bait Obaid Al Shamsi. \nThere are performances at 4–6pm and again at 6–8pm. \nThis is part of the fifth edition of Perform Sharjah\, Sharjah Art Foundation’s season of curated performances that serve as an engaging space for exploring\, remembering and imagining – “treating the body as a site of artistic inquiry\, the programme shifts fluidly between intimate reflection and collective experience”.

SUMMARY:Un Air de Famille
DESCRIPTION:Culture Emulsion brings its successful French comedy to Abu Dhabi – and it is very funny\, a sharp and blackish comedy about the ties that unite (and sometimes suffocate). Every Friday the Mesnards gather at the family café before going to dinner; but for this night the unspoken tensions and buried frustrations are revealed. \nIt’s back in Dubai for further shows at The Junction on 20\, 21 and 22 November. (It’s in French\, of course.)

SUMMARY:Artist's Room: Bani Abidi
DESCRIPTION:Bani Abidi’s Artist’s Room displays a single body of work\, Trembling hands (2024) – a series of portraits of artists\, journalists\, politicians\, lawyers\, doctors and civil society leaders who publicly spoke out against the genocide of Palestinians\, often using public platforms that exposed them to backlash\, censorship or repression. Drawn in 2024\, the portraits primarily refer to speeches made in late 2023 and early 2024 during the most brutal and deadly period of the Israeli onslaught on Gaza\, also characterised by widespread international inaction. Some of the speakers depicted by Abidi are Palestinian; others spoke in solidarity. \nTo 25 April.
