The Dirty Dozen Brass Band (above) is the pioneering group that brought funk to traditional New Orleans jazz : the New Orleans-based Grammy Award winners blend traditional jazz and bebop with funk and R&B/soul – lots of energy\, lots of musicality\, and how can a band that includes both a tuba and a bass sax not deliver a good time all round? And Fanfaraï (below) is a kind of French/North African equivalent\, a brass and percussion ensemble founded in 2005 and based in France with musicians from a variety of cultural backgrounds who merge Arab-Berber\, Afro-Cuban\, Latin\, and jazz sounds with reggae and funk – and as the name indicates\, there’s going to be a lot of brass and a real overlay of raï (their 2018 album Raï is not Dead says it like it is). DESCRIPTION:An exhibition featuring more than 40 works by 16 photographers (of different nationalities\, but all based in the UAE) that seek to find beauty and meaning in the small moments of everyday life\, personal rituals\, routines\, brief encounters\, simple gestures and humble places we often overlook. As the gallery puts it\, “It reminds us that sometimes the things we dismiss as ordinary are the things that tell us who we are\, where we come from\, and what we remember”. \nThe exhibition is curated by Ola Allouz\, herself an award-winning photographer; her idea for the exhibition grew from taking groups of photographers on trips to the village of Kumzar. For Allouz\, the moments around the table stayed with her the most\, sharing food\, stories\, laughter\, and conversation. That led to the question at the heart of the exhibition: ‘Can a feeling be archived?”’ \nThere are works by Abdallah Alastad\, Abdulla Al Ghurair\, Abdulla Alblooshi\, Aisha Esmaeilzadeh\, Akhilesh Nair\, April Ann Vocal\, Fatima Al Amiri\, Fatima Albudoor\, Judite Serafim\, Latifa Almazrouei\, Maitha Alqassmi\, Maria Khodzhamberdieva\, Mohamed Al Alawi\, Preschelle Ann Bigueras\, Sara Al Shamsi and Ola Allouz herself. DESCRIPTION:“What is the ultimate goal of a city?” asks architect/artist Hamad Almuzaini: “Governance and the streamlining of lived experience – an impossible task – or something more open\, broken\, and constantly reinvented?” He says these questions guide his work across photography\, drawing\, and sculpture as he probes the entangled systems and countless stakeholders that make and remake environments we call ‘home’. “My practice involves observing and researching built environments and the ways we generate and respond to the notion of ‘place’ … By examining widely encountered subjects within cities\, I reinterpret how we navigate and interact with these places – uncovering gestures\, behaviours\, and motivations that quietly shape the act of placemaking.” \nThe exhibition looks at placemaking within the context of Kuwait City\, considering everyday details\, overlooked objects\, and urban infrastructures that shape places to trace the subtle relationships between people\, objects\, systems\, and the built environment. \nTo 11 October.

DESCRIPTION:Hasan Hadi’s debut feature is a beautiful tale of love\, friendship and resilience told from the perspective of a child growing up under Saddam Hussein’s oppressive regime. It was the first Iraqi film to feature at the Cannes Film Festival\, where it premiered in the Directors’ Fortnight and won both the section’s Audience Award and the Camera d’Or. \nNine-year-old Lamia (the unselfconsciously excellent Baneen Ahmad Nayyef) is required by her school to make a birthday cake for the Iraqi president. Lamia sets off into town with her grandmother Bibi (Waheed Thabet Khreibat) and her pet cockerel Hindi; as she shops for sanctioned and hard-to-find ingredients\, she meets a series of vivid characters\, some very engaging and at least one pretty creepy. The results are highly engaging\, and the cake climax is worth the wait … Highly recommended\, and kudos to Cinema Space for finding this little gem for its programme of free screening. \n
