Highly recommended.

DESCRIPTION:A documentary about the impacts of climate change on the Republic of the Marshall Islands and its people.  The Marshall Islands comprises more than a thousand individual islands and islets\, most of them less than 5.9 feet above sea level. The greenhouse gas emissions of the industrialised world and the consequent rise in sea levels will likely destroy the culture of the Marshall Islands as well as its territory – and forecasts predict the destruction of the islands as early as 2050. \nIt was particularly important for filmmakers Viviana and Mark Uriona to get to know the people\, developing the together with them and therefore enabling a kind of empowerment. This approach to mutual exploration has resulted in an exciting\, vivid and highly charged documentary on what is surely the most important topic of our time. \nThis film is presented as a part of the NAAS film programme\, a collaboration between several cultural institutions in the UAE: Goethe-Institut Gulf Region\, the Embassies of France\, Canada\, Austria and Switzerland\, and the Italian Cultural Institute of Abu Dhabi. The first edition of NAAS is titled Green Reel: Films for a Sustainable Future\, and it focuses on the themes of environment and sustainability.

DESCRIPTION:The second of three exhibitions showcasing contemporary approaches to textile and fibre art curated for Green Art Gallery by Murtaza Vali. It brings together work by four contemporary artists – M’barek Bouhchichi\, Sayan Chanda\, Himali Singh Soin\, and Swapnaa Tamhane – that references the rich and diverse history and practice of textile arts across South and West Asia and North Africa. \nOften made in collaboration with master artisans\, the included artworks use a variety of traditional dyeing and weaving techniques and materials: wool cloth made in southeastern Morocco and then stained with henna; a handwoven tapestry and a patchwork abstraction that incorporate deconstructed vintage quilts and scarves from Bengal; Ikat fabric dyed and woven in Andhra Pradesh; and industrially made cotton embellished by hand with wood block printing and mirror embroidery in the desert region of Kutch\, Gujarat. “Countering colonial and modernist discourses that devalued such Indigenous textile traditions as mere craft\, these works reclaim their vitality as a mode of contemporary expression. SUMMARY:All That Perishes at the Edge of Land: dir Hira Nabi (2019)
DESCRIPTION:Before the Ocean Master met its demise at the Gadani shipbreaking yards in Pakistan\, filmmaker and artist Hira Nabi gave it a voice and staged conversations between the vessel and the labourers dismantling it. The stories exchanged between the workers and the ship allude to the hazards and toxicity that affect the workers and the sea. \nInspired by the 1959 book Aag Ka Darya (River of Fire) by Urdu writer and poet Qurratulain Hyder\, Nabi incorporates insights from discussions with her mother\, as well as ideas from Rob Nixon’s Slow Violence and the Environmentalism of the Poor and poems by the left-wing Pakistani author Faiz Ahmed Faiz. \nThe screening runs for 30 minutes and will be followed by a Q&A session conducted in Urdu\, Hindi\, and English.

Carol Kane is outstanding as a Jewish immigrant arriving in late 19th-century New York\, to live in a tenement apartment on the Lower East Side with a husband who she hadn’t seen in three years. She finds it hard to adapt to the new way of life; he’s embraced the new world and his wife is a throwback to a culture that he desperately wants to forget. Kane is excellent\, channelling the film’s melancholy tone while investing her character with a degree of empathy that only heightens the emotion of scenes with a husband who wishes she no longer existed … \n

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE In Real Time
DESCRIPTION:NYU Abu Dhabi Art Gallery is celebrating its ten-year anniversary with a characteristically interesting exhibition. In Real Time is a dynamic show – over the course of three months the curators will be adding artists\, and the artists and performers will add work. So far the roster includes some impressive names. Gallery (and magpie) favourites Ramin Haerizadeh\, Rokni Haerizadeh and Hesam Rahmanian are joined by Chafa Ghaddar\, Rana Begum\, Haleh Redjaian\, Moza Almatrooshi\, Gözde Ilkin and Cristiana de Marchi. \nThe prime mover is of course the Gallery’s Executive Director Maya Allison\, who has a ‘letter of intent’ that asks some pertinent questions: “What do we need from a space for art in this particular moment\, in this particular part of the world\, in the UAE\, in a university\, in an academic gallery?” Her intention is that the artists\, the visitors and the art gallery team essentially devise some answers\, or at least some opinions – “I hope this exhibition allows for any number of responses” concludes Maya Allison. \nThe contribution from the artists is obvious – they can make and remake art\, amending their presence over the course of the show. Some artworks start with no more than a statement of intent; some artists may just leave hints of a presence (“the artist was here\, and may be back”). Maybe there will be some works that last only one day. And the roster may expand during the show: “the artist list will grow\, if and when it seems right”. \nMuch the same applies to the gallery team\, particularly the curators: they can add more artists\, reconfigure the space\, expound and cajole. The principal curator is Duygu Demir\, quite recently arrived but carrying an impressive pedigree (and ad addressbook that has obviously contributed some of the participating artists). She’s expects to provide curatorial interventions\, maybe even collaborations. \nAs for the visitors\, their role may be more ephemeral: “this is an exhibition about visiting and revisiting\, about being physically present in the space\, with the traces left by artists who have been there\, or hints of those who will be there …” But in fact two of the works will be made entirely by the community\, and that could mean a contribution from you. \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:An exhibition of Soviet animation film by Priit Parn\, Fyodor Khitruk\, Andrey Khrzhanovsky\, Yuri Norshtein\, and Robert Sahakyants; and post-soviet video art\, paintings\, installations\, objects and works on paper by Blue Noses\, Diana Kapizova\, Nikolay Koshelev\, Alina Kugush\, Katerina Lukina\, Kirill Makarov\, Kirill Mikhailin\, Slava Nesterov\, and Diana Shliman. \nSurreal considers a space in Soviet art where the grip of the state was weakened. Animators like Fyodor Khitruk\, Andrei Khrzhanovsky\, and Yuri Norstein made works ostensibly for children but which explored surreal realms of fiction and magical realism\, offering an escape from the isolated Soviet reality and a means of connecting with the wider world. By the late 80s\, these unconventional animations were influencing a generation caught between a bleak Soviet socialist reality and impending capitalism. \nTo 14 July.
