SUMMARY:BRED Abu Dhabi
DESCRIPTION:The second edition of “the Middle East’s neo-culture festival” aims to celebrate the region’s art\, fashion and musical tastes (specifically grime and hip-hop) with local and international artists\, local and international food outlets\, gaming\, basketball showdowns\, streetwear stalls\, curated art\, and “interactive experiences”. \nThe concerts are on three of the days\, the rest of the festival runs for all five. You pay extra for the concerts; a day pass to the festival site without concerts is AED 75\, you’ll pay AED 125 for an all-areas-plus-concert ticket on 25 April (headliners J Hus and AJ Tracey) or AED 195 per day for 26 April (Metro Boomin and Offset) and 27 April (Ty Dolla $ign and Don Toliver). Plus there’s premium-price access-with-extras tickets too. The five-day access-mostly-everything pass at AED 495 seems more of a bargain. \n  \n

SUMMARY:(De)Constructing the Virtual Character in Motion Pictures
DESCRIPTION:In the last 30 years\, virtual characters in motion pictures have grown from a novelty to a staple of movie-making. This talk for the NYU Abu Dhabi Institute examines is by Luca Fascione\, a senior ray tracing engineer for NVIDIA; she outlines what goes into designing a movie character that captures audiences in a contemporary feature\, explores the historical development of the corresponding technologies\, and discusses the aesthetic and structural choices that led to the current understanding of what a virtual character is (or should be). Fascinating stuff.

SUMMARY:Wednesday Night Impro: Maestro
DESCRIPTION:Ten actors converge for a night of scenes\, songs and games based on audience suggestions. After each round you score the players on a scale of 1 to 5\, and the one with the lowest score is eliminated. Eventually only one remains\, to be crowned the Maestro. “Fast-paced\, unpredictable\, and hilarious” says the promo\, and you couldn’t argue with that. As with all Courtyard improv evenings it’s free\, but you need to put your name on the guestlist (via the website); and it’s first-come first-served\, so get there early enough to grab a seat. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Alice Sara Ott: Echoes of Life
DESCRIPTION:The remarkable young German-Japanese pianist has been winning awards since she was seven; this performance sounds equally impressive in its own way\, an autobiographical musical journey built around Chopin’s 24 Preludes (the CD also has seven contemporary works to complete the programme\, by György Ligeti\, Nino Rota\, Chilly Gonzales\, Toru Takemitsu\, Arvo Pärt\, Francesco Tristano\, and one of Alice Ott’s own compositions based on Mozart’s Lacrimosa). The music and the playing should be exceptional\, but the show is accompanied by visuals created by noted architect Hakan Demirel which are reportedly as impressive …

SUMMARY:Khaled Akil: The Infinite & The Finite
DESCRIPTION:A solo show for the artist’s recent work – which aims to depict “the unseen\, the felt\, and the omnipresent”. Akil creates his compositions through dozens of thin layers\, creating depth while avoiding impasto; “the drying process [of oil paint] presents and provokes questions and answers in the artist’s mind\, creating multiple effects to choose from. SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Laura Lappi: Metamorphosis
DESCRIPTION:The first solo exhibition in the MENA region for the Finnish artist. Her work draws inspiration from ancient basilicas\, cathedrals\, and other Scandinavian wooden structures. Using wood as her primary medium\, Lappi establishes a direct connection to her homeland and the natural world through sculptures that evoke architectural qualities. \nTransformation is central to Lappi’s practice; the wall sculptures from her Basilica series show wood transitioning from a living organism to a shaped\, discarded\, reused\, cut\, and organised material. Layering wood to form intricate geometric patterns\, she employs a charring technique using fire; the material  undergoes a profound metamorphosis\, assuming an in-between state\, half-dead and half-alive\, resistant to preservation. \nThe exhibition also introduces a collection of drawings that offer a glimpse into her creative process and inner thoughts. These drawings serve as a bridge between the conceptual realm on paper and the tangible manifestation of transformation in her art\, providing an illuminating perspective on her artistic journey. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Gold and Treasures: 3\,000 Years of Chinese Ornaments
DESCRIPTION:L’ÉCOLE Middle East – Van Cleef and Arpels’ school of jewellery arts– is celebrating its opening in Dubai Design District with this spectacular exhibition. The clue is of course in the name: the pieces on show (a hundred or so of them) come from the Mengdiexuan Collection\, a genuinely outstanding private art collection from Hong Kong\, and spans more than three thousand years of goldsmithing work from China. \nThat in itself is interesting\, for China is better known as a culture that valued bronze\, porcelain and jade rather than gold for high-status artefacts. The Mengdiexuan collection has been assembled by Betty Lo and Kenneth Chu\, partners in business and in life; the Mengdiexuan collection began with a wedding gift from Lo’s father\, a decorating mirror\, which fired their interest in Chinese metalworking. According to Chu\, they were attracted by the creativity on show in gold objects\, combined with the fact that gold was used in Chinese culture primarily as smaller objects and personal ornaments which were eminently collectable. \nThe more familiar genres of bronze\, jade and porcelain are considered among China’s noblest fine arts; when they started\, Betty Lo and Kenneth Chu were taking a step into the unknown. In 30 years of building their collection\, however\, they have become both experts and advocates for Chinese gold. \nOne clear result was the appreciation that China was open to influences from outside its geographic centre\, indeed from outside of China altogether. The collection sheds light on the true diversity of Chinese civilisation. \nThe exhibition runs through many of the key techniques and developments of Chinese goldworking. The oldest pieces employ hammering and chasing techniques\, relatively simple in the earliest work but which by the Tang Dynasty (618–907) had developed into complex ornaments of great delicacy. By that time gold had come to represent divine splendour (the Buddhist paradise was seen as golden) and intellectual virtue (because gold was mined\, it was seen as analogous to human qualities – so the Tang emperor Tai Zong could praise his chief minister for being able to discern and refine the ‘gold’ in men). \nA second craft process featured in the exhibition\, casting\, was derived from bronze metallurgy and in particular has produced magnificent ritual vessels from the Shang to Han eras (roughly contemporary with ancient Rome). Another technique seen in the collection is granulation\, a process of making gold granules that are used as decoration together with inlays of other materials – gems\, glass\, shell inlays. Though lost until the 20th century\, the technique was available to Chinese artisans as early as the Western Han period\, and was fashionable from then well into Tang. \nAnd Chinese goldsmithing probably reached its zenith with gold wire and filigree\, techniques that in the hands of the masters could capture life and movement. \nThe exhibition runs to 10 August\, open Tuesday to Saturday from 10am to 7pm.

SUMMARY:Cirque Du Soleil: CRYSTAL
DESCRIPTION:“This mesmerising amalgamation of acrobatic excellence” is “a truly breathtaking entertainment phenomenon”\, opines the organiser’s press release. Even allowing for the hyperbole\, there’s a good chance that all that will be true: it’s Cirque du Soleil\, after all\, and for this show the company is exploring brand-new creative territory by combining its signature acrobatics with ice-skating. So acrobats and skaters perform on the ice and in the air\, seamlessly combining disciplines from both genres as the ice is transformed into “a dynamic stage where precision skating mingles with awe-inspiring aerial feats and acrobatic prowess”. \nThe technology should be pretty spectacular too – state-of-the-art infrared trackers with 36 spotlights and 28 powerful projectors should create a visually stunning experience for the performers to move through. And no two performances will be exactly alike\, with the action unfolding dynamically around the skaters and acrobats. The soundtrack looks characteristically strong\, too\, with the likes of Sia’s Chandelier\, Sinner Man by Nina Simone\, and A Beautiful Day by U2. \nAs usual with Cirque du Soleil shows\, there’s a storyline – Crystal\, a young girl who feels misunderstood\, goes on a journey of self-discovery and empowerment. The whole show is about looking at things through fresh angles\, peeking through the veneer of everyday life\, and reframing one’s daily realities. \nThe show runs for two consecutive weekends. Show times: \n\n\n\n26 April – 7.30pm\n27 April – 3.30 and 7.30pm\n28 April – 3.30pm\n\n\n\n… then: \n\n\n\n2 May – 7.30pm\n3 May – 7.30pm\n4 May – 3.30 and 7.30pm\n5 May – 3.30pm

SUMMARY:Bull
DESCRIPTION:Dubai Drama Group reprises its 2023 production of Mike Bartlett’s Bull – a title which may be short for bullshit\, but which also suggests bullying and bullfighting. Both of those are highly relevant. \nThree business people wait to hear which of them won’t be getting the two jobs on offer. What follows is a masterclass in the nastier side of capitalism\, an hour of backbiting and baiting\, collusion and malice\, needling growing into outright aggression as two gang up on the third … It can be a tough watch\, but it’s a play with wit and insight\, the kind of thing that demands good acting from the cast – who are Bryn Mitchell\, Matthew T. Corbett\, Catherine Broad (the workers) and John Thekanady (their boss). Kirin Hilliar directs. \nIncidentally\, this is a new place for plays; it will be interesting to see how The Fridge stacks up against the other small venues in the area. \nThere’s a second performance on 27 April.

SUMMARY:Teodor Currentzis and MusicAeterna
DESCRIPTION:Dubai Opera describes this as “a landmark musical event certain to leave an indelible imprint on the region’s artistic tapestry”. With allowances for hyperbole\, the PR writer could be right; the MusicAeterna orchestra (and its associated choir) is been the primary vehicle for expressing the orchestral ideas of the unorthodox Greek-born Russian conductor Teodor Currentzis. \nHe has had a reputation for dramatic interpretation and an unconventional\, punkish appearance; while he’s toned down the stage garb of lace-up boots\, skinny jeans and a T-shirt\, he retains his flair with romantic classics and works that get the most out of the ensemble. \nCurrentzis founded MusicAeterna in Russia in 2004\, when he was serving as principal conductor of the Novosibirsk Opera and Ballet Theatre and subsequently of the Perm Opera and Ballet Theatre; the players were handpicked from around Russia and persuaded to move to his base in Siberia\, where they underwent a gruelling schedule of rehearsal and recording. \nMusicAeterna retains that focus\, though not so much in Siberia these days: the orchestra has long been in demand on the concert circuit and for operatic productions. It has two consecutive evenings in Dubai with different programmes – for the 28th it’s Wagner\, but tonight we have Tchaikovsky: \n“Francesca da Rimini”\, Symphonic Fantasy after Dante\, op.32\n“Capriccio Italien” on folk tunes for orchestra\, op.45\n“Romeo and Juliet”\, Fantasy-Overture after Shakespeare\, TH 42

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Hana El-Sagini: Counting Fingers
DESCRIPTION:A solo exhibition that presents a newly commissioned large-scale installation rooted in the instability and fragility of the human experience — more than 200 fantastical ceramic objects arranged as surreal sculptures and structures that replicate and reimagine healthcare spaces\, such as medical waiting rooms\, hospital corridors\, and doctors’ offices. \nProduced after Hana El-Sagini’s long battle with illness\, the objects featured in this exhibition encourage viewers to find joy and humour in envisioning a strange world where humans\, animals\, plants and inanimate objects blend into semi-distinguishable forms and figures. The exhibition prompts us to pause and contemplate the inherent mechanisms that enable us to endure pain\, trauma\, fear\, and adversity in ways that may potentially reconnect us with our vulnerability and\, ultimately\, our humanity. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Travesía Colombia
DESCRIPTION:Colombia comes to Dubai; 45 professional dancers\, musicians\, and actors from the country deliver a 90-minute spectacle showcasing the culture\, music\, and dance of Colombia. It’s all hung on a plot involving Emirati journalists who are touring Colombia\, but the story will definitely be playing second fiddle to the sheer colour and exuberance of the Colombian experience. \nThe show is produced and directed by Judy Pizarro\, a professional dancer whose CV includes 10 years as the principal dancer of the National Ballet of Colombia (1997 – 2006) but who now lives and works in Dubai. \nThere are two shows today\, at 4pm and 8.30pm. \n

SUMMARY:Abu Dhabi International Book Fair
DESCRIPTION:The 33rd ADIBF 2024 – which runs 29 April to 5 May at ADNEC under the slogan ‘Where the World’s Tales Unfold’ – will be showing 1\,350 publishers from 90 countries (12 of them represented for the first time)\, 375 local exhibitors (publishers\, distributors\, government entities)\, and more than 2\,000 associated activities covering various cultural and knowledge fields (including the third running of a series of debates modelled on the Oxford style\, the first examples of that in the Arab world). \nEgypt is the Guest of Honour this year for its “role as a beacon of knowledge\, culture\, and art that has influenced the cultures and knowledge of the masses with creative content across various fields”. The Focus Personality programme includes critical readings\, lectures and seminars\, and a dedicated pavilion. \nAlso returning is a Professional Programme designed to support Arab and international publishers. This year’s edition will highlight the impact of AI on the publishing world and creative industries; there will also be a Copyright Exchange Forum\, the Abu Dhabi Fellowship Programme (Abu Dhabi Connect)\, and the New Opportunities Centre. The Fair will also adopt a new initiative to support digital technologies and statistics in the Arab world\, with a special focus on artificial intelligence\, offering advanced workshops to build Arab publishers’ skills in this field. \nNew this year is an Arabic Content Forum for Children and Adolescents\, a dedicated forum for photography as part of the Arts Corner titled ‘Image as Language’; a dedicated Cinema Corner with screenings and creative workshops; an Arabic Content Forum for Children and Adolescents; a dedicated forum for photography as part of the Arts Corner titled ‘Image as Language’\, and a popular book market named after the Al-Azbakiya Wall Book Market in Egypt. \nExtras for visitors include one free visit per person to the Qasr Al Hosn and Louvre Abu Dhabi museums\, discounts from audiobook publishers\, and savings of up to 25 percent on book prices. Tickets are free\, but you’re advised to prebook via the website. \n
