SUMMARY:Habuba Farah: Beams of Light
DESCRIPTION:A selection of works from the 1970s to the present by the noted Lebanese-Brazilian artist\, including oils on canvas\, gouache on paper\, and pencil drawings. A highlight is her exploration of ‘neutral gray’ or coloured gray\, achieved by blending primary colours with their complementary counterparts in geometric compositions that often resemble beams of light. \nDespite facing health challenges and well into her 90s\, Farah remains devoted to her practice. “My body may be fragile\, but my mind is a whirlwind. I continue to create and reinvent myself\, using collages and drawings as new ways to express my vision”. \nTo 25 May. \nAbove: Habuba Farah\, Untitled (1987)

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Sola Olulode: I’ve Got to Know You Now We May Never Meet Again
DESCRIPTION:The Dubai debut exhibition for the London based Nigerian-British artist whose paintings depict a vibrant dialogue between myth\, memory\, and the sea. In this new series the artist draws on her own holiday experiences while referencing the Yoruba water deity Yemayá and water spirits; the result is a show that celebrate femininity\, nature\, and the transcendent power of water.

SUMMARY:Kodo
DESCRIPTION:In Japanese\, the word ‘kodo’ can have two meanings – it can be translated as ‘heartbeat’\, the primal source of all rhythm\, and in a different context it can mean ‘children of the drum’\, which reflects the group’s desire to play the drums with the simple heart of a child. And there’s nothing quite like a Kodo performance – the Japanese drumming is visceral in its power and hypnotic in its effects. The troupe of highly skilled drummers delivers a thrilling theatrical experience; since the group’s debut in 1981\, Kodo has given over 7\,000 performances on five continents. \nThis Abu Dhabi festival concert is sure to be a hot ticket. There’s a second performance tomorrow (9 April). \nFun fact: The largest of the taiko drums that the Kodo troupe play can weigh up to three tonnes and are made from the trunk of a single tree. \n

SUMMARY:Art Connects Women
DESCRIPTION:Launched in 2017\, this annual initiative dedicated to empowering female artists and fostering gender parity in the creative industry includes a short-run exhibition which promises “an extensive array of art works by women artists from across the world” (we don’t know who’s showing). This year’s theme is ‘Leave a Legacy’\, inviting the artists to explore how their work can create a lasting\, meaningful impact on the world and their future generation. So no pressure then … \nThe ACQ programme also includes a guided cultural tour of Abu Dhabi on 9 April\, a celebratory dinner on 11 April (both invite only\, we understand) and a one-day conference on 10 April with the title 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁: 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗪𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻’𝘀 𝗥𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗘𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝘆.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Nada Baraka and Esraa Elfeky: Across A Velvet Horizon
DESCRIPTION:A collaborative presentation of Egyptian artists Nada Baraka and Esraa Elfeky that plays on “a sense of incompleteness … Here\, history is unfixed and left open to question. Viewers are invited to sit with uncertainty\, to embrace the search even when the full picture remains tantalisingly out of reach”. Baraka’s evocative paintings and Elfeky’s tactile sculptures offer a visual narrative that blurs personal\, cultural\, and environmental histories\, occupying a space between the real and the imagined.

SUMMARY:Remote Al Ain by Rimini Protokoll
DESCRIPTION:Rimini Protokoll pushes the boundaries of conventional theatre. During this performance walk within the collective’s ‘Remote X’ series (2013–ongoing)\, you are invited to explore the growing presence of artificial intelligence in future cities; for this tour\, designed specifically for Al Ain\, you wear headphones (provided) and are guided by a computer-generated voice (in Arabic or English) into familiar and unfamiliar sites “that emerge as if from an imagined film”. \nThe starting point is Al Jahili Fort. \nThe Rimini Protokoll experience is remarkable and can be eye-opening; the collective has done Abu Dhabi a couple of times in the past\, as part of early Abu Dhabi Art extras\, and we’d heartily recommend the trip … \nThis is part of the Public Art Abu Dhabi Biennial. \nFuture dates: \n13 April\n20 April\n27 April \n

SUMMARY:Public Art Abu Dhabi Biennial: Bik Van der Pol’s The poem that jumps the fence
DESCRIPTION:Artist duo Bik Van der Pol (Liesbeth Bik and Jos Van der Pol) engage in collaborative projects on how art constructs public spaces for speculative thought and collective creativity. The poem that jumps the fence features weekly performances on Abu Dhabi Beach and workshops connecting words and sand as real and symbolic material that binds our world; every Sunday afternoon\, a performer writes a poem in the sand\, only for it to fade away. During workshops in collaboration with local poets and writers\, participants generate text for the performances. \n  \n

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Amirhossein Bayani: The Season of Ruin's Remembrance
DESCRIPTION:Iranian artist Amirhossein Bayani’s vividly coloured and highly detailed landscape paintings s explore themes around life\, immigration\, and freedom. Each of the paintings in this series was inspired by a real-life story of an Iranian woman who fought for freedom and lost her life; but rather than illustrating heroic or tragic stories\, Bayani envisions these figures in other-worldly forest settings – they appear memorialised as statues or translucent spirits\, glimpsed between the trees\, standing on a rock or on the edge of a lake. There’s an eeriness to the scenes: the shades of green are vivid to the point of being luminous\, the foliage so dense it creates a wall\, blocking out the light. “This tension between beauty and horror\, for me\, describes the struggle for emancipation\,” says Bayani. “It all depends on your perspective.”

SUMMARY:Akram Khan Company: Jungle Book reimagined
DESCRIPTION:The second and final performance for this bold adaptation of Kipling’s classic tale which explores urgent themes such as climate change and human displacement. Akram Khan and his team have reimagined the journey of Mowgli through the eyes of a refugee caught in a world devastated by the impact of climate change. This is the story of a child who will help us to listen again – not to our voices but to the voices of the natural world that we\, the modern world\, try to silence. \nAudiences are promised “a visually stunning and emotionally charged experience”\, which is broadly what you expect from a Khan piece … The script is by Tariq Jordan\, with dramaturgy by Sharon Clark to an original score by Jocelyn Pook. Sound design comes from Gareth Fry\, lighting by Michael Hulls\, visual stage design by Miriam Buether\, and video design and animation by YeastCulture the visual technology turns the stage into a magical world that dives into the myths of today. \nJungle Book reimagined is performed by ten dancers: Maya Balam Meyong\, Bea Bidault\, Ferghas Clavey\, Harry Theadora Foster\, Filippo Franzese\, Bianca Mikahil\, Jasper Narvaez\, Max Revell\, Matthew Sandiford\, Elpida Skourou\, Jan Mikaela Villanueva\, Lani Yamanaka. \nThis performance is supported by the British Council in the UAE.

DESCRIPTION:This solo exhibition by the Japanese-Brazilian artist marks the culmination of her V-Residency programme at Volery\, during which Oushiro has developed a new body of work that (according the gallery) “pushes the boundaries of abstraction\, inviting the viewer into a dynamic exploration of movement\, perception\, and spatial depth”. \nOushiro’s practice is characterised by bold strokes of colour and geometric forms\, drawing from the expressive vibrancy of Brazilian art and the precision of Japanese aesthetics. The Higher We Soar is “an invitation to experience abstraction as a visceral\, multi-sensory language—one that speaks to both the intellect and intuition\, navigating the space between rigour and release\, stillness and motion”.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Hady Boraey: Migrants to the North
DESCRIPTION:The second solo show at this gallery for the Egyptian artist\, featuring new works by the artist that delve into themes of memory\, nostalgia\, and childhood. Inspired by ancient Egyptian and Coptic art\, Boraey heavily depends on metaphors\, “taking his audience on a dramatic journey filled with poetic nuances to coax them into new territory beyond their comfort zones” as the gallery puts it. \nThe artist himself says the inspiration came from his father’s library: “In my journey from childhood to maturity\, I was affected and dreamed a lot of another distant land to live in. There is nothing in it but a rock\, a horse\, a tree and a lake. A pure\, simple dream. Here\, in some of these paintings\, I tried to convey my childhood dream in paintings that carry many of the feelings of Hady the child\, whose life took him far from his home in the Delta. He still dreams of the legends of his grandmother’s old tales …

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Nour Malas: Evil is Banal
DESCRIPTION:Nour Malas’ solo exhibition starts with Hannah Arendt’s quote about the Nazis’ unconscionable acts of genocide: they were not exceptional but part of a wider belief that estimated some human lives as disposable. For Malas\, displacement upheaves feelings of belonging; this unsettling becomes one’s condition\, not merely an effect. When home is an ambiguous place\, the desire for consistency carries reassurance even as one remains aware of the cracks in this elusive safety. Her work traverses the physical and emotional landscapes of worlds increasingly marked by pervasive violence. The artist layers paint\, blurring the distinction between abstraction and the presence of figures; she uses a palette of colours she associates both with the materiality of the body and responses of alarm or anxiety\, manifestations of psycho-social reactions.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Shama Al Hamed: I Jump - Will I Stick the Landing?
DESCRIPTION:This first solo show by Shama Al Hamed\, curated by Walter Williems\, features a collection of paintings\, sculptures\, and installations that offers insight into the formative experiences and emotions that have shaped the artist’s creative practice and artistic perspective. \nSays the gallery: “Shama uses the metaphor of jumping as a symbol of movement – through time\, memory\, and emotion. Each leap becomes a reflection of her ongoing efforts to navigate and transcend the spaces that define her\, whether driven by joy\, individuality\, or quiet defiance”. \nA recurring theme in her work is the integration of architectural patterns\, derived from photographs of buildings that framed her childhood. These designs\, transformed through repetition and abstraction\, evoke defining memories and the influence of physical spaces on her creative vision.

SUMMARY:Akram Khan Company: Jungle Book reimagined
DESCRIPTION:Akram Khan’s signature choreography\, blending Kathak and contemporary dance\, delivers a bold adaptation of Kipling’s classic tale which explores urgent themes such as climate change and human displacement. Akram and his team have reimagined the journey of Mowgli through the eyes of a refugee caught in a world devastated by the impact of climate change. SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Slavs and Tatars: Simurgh Self-Help
DESCRIPTION:This is The Third Line’s third solo exhibition with the artist collective Slavs and Tatar\, presenting a new body of work inspired by Marcel Broodthaers’ Musée d’Art Moderne – Département des Aigles (1968-1972) – one of the most influential works of conceptual art of the 20th century. In Simurgh Self-Help\, Slavs and Tatars embark on an inventive ‘translation’ of the eagle through the lens of Simurgh\, a mythical bird deeply rooted in Turkic and Persianate folklore\, Sufi traditions\, and the literature of the Caucasus and Central Asia.

SUMMARY:Les Félins | Joy House: dir René Clément (1963)
DESCRIPTION:Alan Delon is Marc\, a petty criminal on the run from American gangsters\, who seeks refuge in a mission for the poor where wealthy widow Barbara (Lola Albright) hires him as her chauffeur and moves him to her Riviera château. Barbara’s niece (Jane Fonda) becomes attracted to Marc\, but then it gets complicated: Barbara is hiding her lover Vincent\, a bank robber sought by the police for murdering her husband\, and they’re planning to murder Marc for his passport … and the gangsters have got wind of Marc’s whereabouts. There are bodies … \nThe film is satisfyingly twisted\, almost film noir in its plotting but defiantly European in style.  It’s in French with English subtitles; the screening will be followed by a discussion with Hind Mezaina (who’s curating this season for AF). \nThe price incidentally is for non-members; for AF members it’s free.

DESCRIPTION:Tensions boil over when 30-year-old Cairo security guard Hassan (Essam Omar) gets into an argument with his bullish landlord Karem (Ahmed Bahaa)\, Hassan’s beloved dog Rambo steps up to defend his master via a bite to Karem’s privates. SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Athar Jaber: Vestiges
DESCRIPTION:A solo exhibition for an artist only recently signed by Ayyam Gallery. This large body of work\, an exploration of the fragile relationship between the human form and the forces that shape it\, re-imagines the human form as figures that transcend mere physical disfigurement to serve as symbolic representations of how individuals are torn apart by the weight of the world. Athar’s sculptures embody an ideal of beauty\, but their fractured state suggests that this is in fact an illusion.\nThe artist statement speaks of human forms that emerge and recede – “fragmented\, eroded\, and incomplete\, yet alive … They appear as remnants of something once whole\, as though time has worn away at them … In the absence of features\, the viewer is invited to project their own reflections of memory\, identity\, and impermanence.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Behzad Khosravi Noori: The Life of an Itinerant Through a Pinhole
DESCRIPTION:Behzad Noori\, PhD is a self-described artist\, writer\, educator and necromancer; his research-based practice includes films\, installations\, and archival studies\, investigating histories from the Global South\, labour and the means of production\, and histories of political relationships that have existed as a counter narration to the east-west / north-south dichotomy. \nNoori uses personal experience as a springboard to establish a hypothetical relationship between memories and significant world events; this show analyses photographs made by his grandfather\, Gholamreza Amirbeigi\, between 1956 and 1968 – using images of working-class agency to consider an unconscious colonial memory and its formative influence on modern\, global southern subjectivity.
