SUMMARY:Jazz At The Island: Mezzotono / Nesrine
DESCRIPTION:Jazz under the stars on Sharjah’s Al Noor Island – though the evening might be stretching the definition of ‘jazz’. The headliners are Mezzotono\, the Italian a cappella five-voice group with a unique style which blends vocal harmonies\, beatboxing\, and vocal percussion. They aim to cover many music styles from jazz to pop via mambo\, tango\, folk music (especially Italian – they’re from Italy)\, big band jazz and classical. And the Franco-Algerian singer\, songwriter and cellist Nesrine (above) is another breaker of genre boundaries\, usually employing a unique lineup of voice\, cello\, and percussion to deliver a musical fusion that spans the Mediterranean region from North Africa to Southern Europe. \nWhatever the definitions\, though\, this is an evening that we’d highly recommend. \nThe schedule: \n4-5pm Tour of the island and the Butterfly House\n5-5.30pm Vocal jazz workshop with Mezzotono (included in the ticket price\, we think\, but first come first served)\n6-7pm Performance by Sens8tion (Sharjah Performing Arts Academy dance troupe)\n7-8.30pm Interval for dinner\n8.30-9.30pm Mezzotono\n9.30-10.30pm Nesrine \nThe AED 100 ticket price buys you entry to the music\, but there’s also a 250 AED option which includes dinner before the main acts; and a AED 450 deal for entry on both nights including dinner.

DESCRIPTION:The highly successful stage adaptation of the iconic MGM film about silent film actors who face their share of struggles over the gradual transition to talkies. SUMMARY:Day 1 | Forest Cinema
DESCRIPTION:Dharamshala International Film Festival has a peripatetic and constantly changing programme called DIFF On the Road\, part of the festival’s mandate to build networks of cinematic solidarity and to extend the space for discourse around independent cinema. In keeping with the current 421 exhibition Way of the Forest\, here it showcases two films that delve deeply into the myths\, legends\, and spirits of disappearing forests and their lingering impact on those forced to migrate to the concrete jungles of urban worlds. \nAn Invocation to the Earth dir Yeo Siew Hua\, Singapore (2020: 16 min) \nConceived during 2019\, when large-scale fires were consuming the forests of Indonesia\, the film confronts climate collapse through the lens of pre-colonial folktales and animistic rituals. \nThe Fever dir Maya Da-Rin\, Brazil (2019: 98 min) \nFeaturing dialogue in both Portuguese and indigenous languages\, this drama/thriller features a main cast of indigenous Brazilian from the Upper Rio Negro. Justino is a security guard at the harbour in Manaus; just as his daughter prepares to leave to study medicine in Brasília\, Justino succumbs to a mysterious fever. During the day\, he fights to stay awake at work; during the night\, a mysterious creature dogs his footsteps. A visit from his brother makes him remember the life he left deep in the jungle 20 years before. Between the oppression of the city and the distance of his native village\, Justino is no longer able to endure an existence without a sense of belonging.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Vian Sora: House of Pearls
DESCRIPTION:New paintings and works on paper from the Louisville-based artist that explore pearls as “a metaphor for achieving stability and the needed structural integrity for life itself to regenerate”. Drawing on her experiences as a war survivor and immigrant (Iraqi-born\, she sought refuge in Dubai following the US invasion of Iraq) Sora reflects on the uncertainty and shifting boundaries of existence\, capturing the physical\, mental\, and emotional toll experienced across nations\, cultures\, and time. “Her paintings reveal the complex nature of identity and seek cohesion like the iridescent layers of a natural pearl” says the gallery.

SUMMARY:Putting the Record Straight: The Lost Women of Art History
DESCRIPTION:Last in this seven-part lecture series by art historian Rose Balston on female artists from the 16th through to the 18th century – “women who have not only been side-lined\, but literally (and shockingly) blocked out of history”\, mainly by the (male) custodians of 19th-century art history. The talks run every other Wednesday to 4 December from 11am to 12.30pm; individual sessions are AED 250 per person\, but there’s a deal for all seven at AED 1\,650. \nThe schedule: \n11 Sept Blazing the Trail: Sofonisba Anguissola\nIn the 16th century\, Sofonisba Anguissola painted her way out of domesticity to unprecedented fame\, earning accolades from (among others) Michelangelo and Van Dyck. \n25 Sept The Secret Renaissance: The Women of Bologna\nThe female artists of 16th and 17th century Bologna flourished in this city and became part of its cultural identity. \n9 Oct Artemisia Gentileschi: Art and Power\nThe most famous of all female artists from this period\, Artemisia secured her place among the Baroque masters with astonishing paintings that powerfully reflect her personal struggles and cultural triumphs. \n23 Oct Women who Shaped the Dutch Golden Age: Legacy Reclaimed\nExplore the Dutch Golden Age through the lens of groundbreaking female artists who often outshone their male counterparts. \n6 Nov Rococo Rock Star: Rosalba Carriera\nCarriera was a canny businesswoman who revolutionised pastel painting\, captivated the Grand Tour elite\, and became an international cultural celebrity. \n20 Nov In the Court of Versailles: Élisabeth Vigée-Lebrun & Adélaïde Labille-Guiard\nCreating sensational portraits of their royal patrons\, the two top female painters in pre-Revolutionary France had nothing to be rivals about except that they both existed in a world not intended for them. \n4 Dec Angelica Kauffman: Prodigy\, Pioneer\nAngelica Kauffman\, a founding member of the Royal Academy\, achieved international renown as both a portrait and history painter. Why then has she been sidelined in art history?

DESCRIPTION:A solo exhibition of works that fuse engraving\, embroidery\, and landscape\, presented by Gallery One\, Ramallah. SUMMARY:Marc Quinn: Photosynthetic Forms
DESCRIPTION:The rebranding of Custot Gallery Dubai to Waddington Custot Dubai is coming up trumps with some big names (the partnership of long-time London art dealer Leslie Waddington\, and French dealer Stephane Custot dates back to 2010\, and Custot became sole owner in 2015). This time its a solo exhibition by Marc Quinn that aims to explore humanity’s complex relationship with nature and our environment: “playing with scale and materiality\, Quinn is able to draw out the balance that exists between us and nature\, revealing how almost everything in the world today has been manipulated and influenced by human desire …” Must be worth seeing. SUMMARY:Singin’ in the Rain
DESCRIPTION:The highly successful stage adaptation of the iconic MGM film about silent film actors who face their share of struggles over the gradual transition to talkies. The plot isn’t what matters\, of course; it’s the songs – classics like Good Morning\, Make ’em Laugh\, Moses Supposes\, and of course Singin’ in the Rain – and the dancing (there’s no Gene Kelly\, but the choreography by Andrew Wright is just great). There will also be live rain showers on stage every night … \nThis touring show is directed by Jonathan Church\, premiered at the Chichester Festival Theatre (where the front rows were given waterproof macs to ward off the splashes) before a West End run\, and has suitably opulent set designs by Simon Higlett that make the most of the all-essential lamppost. The result is a celebration of Hollywood’s golden era with romance\, humour and wall-to-wall entertainment. \nThere are performances at 2pm and 7pm\, and further shows to 14 December: \n\n\n30 Nov 8pm\n1 Dec 2pm\n1 Dec 7pm\n2 Dec no show\n3 Dec 8pm\n4 Dec 8pm\n5 Dec 8pm\n6 Dec 8pm\n7 Dec 2pm\n7 Dec 7pm\n8 Dec 2pm\n8 Dec 7pm\n9 Dec no show\n10 Dec 8pm\n11 Dec 8pm\n12 Dec 8pm\n13 Dec 8pm\n14 Dec 2pm\n14 Dec 8pm

DESCRIPTION:Rimini Protokoll pushes the boundaries of conventional theatre. During this performance walk within the collective’s ‘Remote X’ series (2013–ongoing)\, you are invited to explore the growing presence of artificial intelligence in future cities; for this tour\, designed specifically for Al Ain\, you wear headphones (provided) and are guided by a computer-generated voice (in Arabic or English) into familiar and unfamiliar sites “that emerge as if from an imagined film”. \nThe starting point is Al Jahili Fort. \nThe Rimini Protokoll experience is remarkable and can be eye-opening; the collective has done Abu Dhabi a couple of times in the past\, as part of early Abu Dhabi Art extras\, and we’d heartily recommend the trip … \nThis is part of the Public Art Abu Dhabi Biennial. \nFuture dates: \n8 December\n15 December\n22 December \n12 January\n25 January \n9 February\n23 February \n6 April\n13 April\n20 April\n27 April \n

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Bouchra Khalili: Between Circles and Constellations
DESCRIPTION:Amplifying the voices of migrant and disenfranchised communities\, Khalili makes manifest micro-histories erased by the nation-state. Featuring a selection of her most significant projects over the last two decades\, including the regional premiere of The Public Storyteller (2024)\, the exhibition highlights the need to document stories of collective emancipation and advocates for what the artist calls ‘radical citizenship’.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Emily Karaka: Ka Awatea\, A New Dawn
DESCRIPTION:A survey of the work and practice of Emily Karaka. A largely self-taught painter\, she is an abstract expressionist\, a colourist and (occasionally) an assemblage artist. Her work is personal\, passionate and anchored in the politics of the culture clash within Aotearoa New Zealand\, as well as the legacy of colonialism and its ongoing impact on Māori people and culture. Ka Awatea\, A New Dawn\, the first major exhibition of the artist’s oeuvre\, brings together a selection sampled from her 47-year career alongside new work commissioned by Sharjah Art Foundation.

SUMMARY:The Streets
DESCRIPTION:The era-defining British rap artist Mike Skinner makes his Dubai debut with his band (also called The Streets). He’s been quiet for a while\, mostly DJing and working on a film that he largely wrote and directed himself (The Darker the Shadow the Brighter the Light\, released in 2023 with an album of the same name). But now it looks like he’s getting back to what he does best: there may be some of the hits from Original Pirate Material and A Grand Don’t Come for Free from the early 2000s\, but he’s been talking about moving on – “I know people like Liam [Gallagher] and Dizzee [Rascal] have done the anniversary thing\, but I don’t really need the money and I think for your own sanity you have to at least pretend that you’re doing things that are important right now …” – and we’re expecting new material. The Darker the Shadow album is full of smooth grooves and wryly observed lyrical passages\, inventive as ever and based around his signature storytelling; his latest\, released in June\, is a compilation for fabric titled fabric presents The Streets (“I’ve spent many nights wasted but not wasted any nights in fabric over the years”) that includes four new tracks credited to The Streets and another three as Mike Skinner.

SUMMARY:Bouchra Khalili: The Tempest Society
DESCRIPTION:Last chance to see Bouchra Khalili’s 2017 video work\, part of a long series devoted to the legacy of Al Assifa (‘The Tempest’ in Arabic) – a theatre group comprising North African immigrant workers and French students that was active in Paris from 1973 to 1978. \nPremiered at Documenta 14 in Athens\, The Tempest Society is described by the artist as a hypothesis rather than a documentary or fiction; three people from different backgrounds form a group in Athens to examine the current state of Greece\, Europe\, and the Mediterranean via the theatre stag. They name themselves The Tempest Society in homage to Al Assifa. \nThe work is part of Khalili’s exhibition Between Circles and Constellations at Sharjah Art Foundation\, a show based on his enquiry into the hidden histories of solidarities among transnational and stateless communities.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Negin Fallah\, Mai Al Remeithi\, Annie Kurkdjian: Contours of Belonging
DESCRIPTION:A group show for three female artists whose backgrounds\, experiences\, and practices converge in a shared exploration of cultural heritage\, personal memory\, and emotional landscapes. Negin Fallah examines the intersection of tradition and transformation\, where echoes of Iranian illuminated manuscripts and miniatures collide with contemporary narratives of human psychology\, mythology\, and naturalistic philosophy. Mai Al Remeithi’s minimalist compositions channel the architectural metamorphosis of the UAE\, echoing the nation’s balance of heritage and modernity. And Annie Kurkdjian‘s portraits\, often grotesque and haunting\, provide a window into the human psyche scarred by war and displacement.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Arda Aslanian: Obscured / Untold Stories
DESCRIPTION:A solo exhibition for the self-taught Armenian-Jordanian artist who uses her meticulously crafted works to explore the intricacies between visibility and concealment\, using drapery as a metaphor for the complexities of human experience. This series of works delves into the delicate boundaries that define our personal narratives that are often left untold. The gallery comments that “Aslanian’s use of a single-colour gradation technique increases the viewer’s confusion regarding the symbolism of the scene and imposes silence on us. Perhaps this is what she seeks: silence in a world full of noise.”
