SUMMARY:Singin’ in the Rain
DESCRIPTION:The highly successful stage adaptation of the iconic MGM film about silent film actors who face their share of struggles over the gradual transition to talkies. The plot isn’t what matters\, of course; it’s the songs – classics like Good Morning\, Make ’em Laugh\, Moses Supposes\, and of course Singin’ in the Rain – and the dancing (the choreography by Andrew Wright is just great). There will also be live rain showers on stage every night … The result is a celebration of Hollywood’s golden era with romance\, humour and wall-to-wall entertainment. \nThere are two final shows tomorrow: \n\n\n14 Dec 2pm\n14 Dec 8pm

SUMMARY:Ginevra Panzetti and Enrico Ticconi: Harleking
DESCRIPTION:Ginevra Panzetti and Enrico Ticconi\, based between Berlin and Turin\, have been working as a duo since 2008 with a style that merges dance\, performance and visual art. Harleking is a choreographic work that was first seen in 2018 and has since been featured at several dance festivals; its subject is a harlequinade style of mannered gestures through jerky\, robotic movements that manage to combine a courtly formality with a sense of danger and mistrust. There are obvious references to the Harlequin of the Commedia dell’Arte\, a sly servant moved by an insatiable hunger\, a trickster who ultimately derives from a devil character in medieval Passion Plays. Harleking‘s mode of communication has something of ancient wall decorations in which monstrous figures blend in with elegant ornament – figures which can evoke amusement without any joy. \nThis piece is part of the Frontiers dance programme. There’s a second performance on 14 December at 7pm; and Panzetti and Ticconi are giving a workshop on the techniques used in Harleking on 14 December at 1pm.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Tyrrell Winston: Life in the Fast Lane
DESCRIPTION:Winston’s work blends art with sports culture\, transforming everyday objects – deflated basketballs\, cigarette butts\, even the signatures of artists and athletes –into pieces that challenge viewers to reconsider the significance of these items; the results “resonate with resilience\, legacy\, and cultural identity” (says the gallery). His subject is the parallel struggles of athletes and artists\, speed and sacrifice\, the repetitive nature of success and the unseen sacrifices that lead to greatness.

SUMMARY:Abdulla Lutfi: LuffyxLutfi | Emirati-Manga
DESCRIPTION:The Emirati artist introduces “a unique fusion of Japanese manga and Emirati culture”; Lufti’s bold black-and-white line drawings aim to capture the essence of life in the UAE with humour and insight and a style inspired by Lutfi’s childhood love for anime – especially the iconic ‘One Piece’ series. This exhibition merges the fantastical elements of the “One Piece” universe with vibrant Emirati authenticity\, says the gallery.

SUMMARY:Theatresports: Santas vs Elves 2
DESCRIPTION:A second evening of festive competitive improv. In Theatresports\, teams of improvisors are selected to compete against each other for points awarded by a panel of judges. The teams issue challenges to each other on the seasonal theme\, and the judges are looking for how well the improvisors react (usually in terms of narrative\, technique\, and entertainment – judges can hand out warnings or penalties for being boring). One team will get to win the coveted Theatresports trophy … \nIt’s great fun\, and it’s free. You need to put your name down on the webpage’s guestlist\, though\, and turn up early because the RSVP doesn’t guarantee you a seat.

SUMMARY:Encore Presents: Benjamin Grosvenor
DESCRIPTION:Something of a coup for the Encore Presents series of recitals\, curated by Amira Fouad and presented with the Royal Grammar School Guildford Dubai: the stunning British piano virtuoso Benjamin Grosvenor has been accumulating accolades – from reviewers (“everything Grosvenor touches turns to gold”\, “a genius who has reached the height of his interpretive powers”) and in terms of awards: among others\, Grosvenor has been named Gramophone’s Young Artist of the Year\, won a Classical Brit Critics’ Award\, and has a Diapason d’Or Jeune Talent Award. He is internationally recognised for his electrifying performances\, his technical gifts\, a distinctive sound and what Süddeutsche Zeitung called “the unmistakable sense of poetic immersion directed solely at the realisation of music”. (He is also an Ambassador of Music Masters\, a charity dedicated to making music education accessible to all children regardless of their background\, championing diversity and inclusion.) Highly recommended\, even at this price … \nHis programme: \nBrahms\, Intermezzi op.117\nRavel\, Gaspard de la nuit\nMussorgsky\, Pictures at an Exhibition

SUMMARY:Men’s Jewelry\, Signs & Insignia
DESCRIPTION:Jewellery is usually treated as a style of female adornment\, but these days especially it’s also an important signifier for men – at once a social and cultural marker\, an instrument of power assertion\, a communication tool\, and yes a fashion accessory too. This conversation with art historians Dr David Usieto Cabrera and May El Hage\, both lecturers at L’ÉCOLE Middle East School of Jewelry Arts\, discusses the symbolic and ornamental functions of men’s jewellery. SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Wissam Shawkat: Calligraformism
DESCRIPTION:The Iraqi artist and calligrapher introduces the latest examples of his signature style\, merging the beauty of classical Arabic scripts with modern design principles; Calligraforms transforms Thuluth script lettering into abstract\, fluid forms that are removed their textual meaning and presented as stand-alone visual elements. As he puts it\, “Each letter has a life and energy of its own. By magnifying their details and removing the constraints of the text\, I aim to reveal their hidden beauty.” \n“By blending the rich heritage of Arabic calligraphy with influences from modern European abstract movements like Cubism\, and Bauhaus\, Wissam creates a dialogue between the East and West\,” says the gallery. “Calligraformism is more than an art style; it is a philosophy\, an artistic movement\, that reflects Wissam’s desire to break the boundaries of classical calligraphy …”

SUMMARY:Theatresports: Santas vs Elves 1
DESCRIPTION:A newish Courtyard tradition: competitive improv. \nThere’s a second Theatresports Special on 11 December.

SUMMARY:Compagnie Nacera Belaza: La Nuée
DESCRIPTION:The title of this dance piece by Nacera Belaza holds two meanings in French: a dark cloud and a dense flock of birds. She developed the performance following a research visit to the First Nation Dakota tribes in North America; she was struck by the communal festive rituals\, where participants from different communities danced individually and collectively to an ascending rhythm. For La Nuée\, ten dancers move in a pitch-dark space in a performance that unfolds like a painting being drawn on a black canvas; the successive moving tableaux become visible under very precise jets of light that appear and disappear in tandem with the rhythm of a distinctive and singular soundtrack. \nThis performance is La Nuée‘s Arab world premiere; Belaza has seven professional dancers from her own company plus three SPAA students for this special version of the piece\, which is part of Sharjah Art Foundation’s Perform Sharjah programme.

DESCRIPTION:The original and the best of the Home Alone franchise\, funny and slightly sad because eight-year-old Kevin (Macaulay Culkin) is accidentally left behind while his family heads to Paris for Christmas and they simply don’t notice that he’s not there … He does a great job defending the family home from two bumbling burglars on Christmas Eve\, though. \nThere are further screenings on 22\, 28 and 31 December.

SUMMARY:Mezzotono
DESCRIPTION:A Mezzotono concert is always engaging\, always interesting. They describe themselves as a small orchestra without instruments – just five voices\, quality singing\, and a unique style which blends vocal harmonies\, beatboxing\, and vocal percussion. They aim to cover many music styles with Italian and dialect songs (they’re Italian) from jazz to pop via mambo\, tango\, folk music\, big band jazz and classical – and all a capella. The genial stage presence is another plus\, and this is a show that should really suit the Cultural Foundation’s outdoor amphitheatre very well. Recommended\, especially at this price.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Steven Naifeh: Found in Translation
DESCRIPTION:The first solo exhibition in Abu Dhabi in 50 years of works by Steven Naifeh\, Pulitzer Prize-winning author\, businessman and artist – particularly of large-scale geometric abstractions that owe much to hos appreciation of geometric art in the Middle East. \nNaifeh\, whose family is of Arab origin though his parents were US diplomats\, grew up in the Middle East\, Africa\, and South Asia before pursuing art history at both Princeton and Harvard. His practice is closely tied to his family’s experience in the UAE and his exposure to Islamic art; Naifeh’s large works reference the glorious Middle Eastern geometric heritage\, while integrating the newer traditions of geometric abstraction of Europe and America from Kazimir Malevich to Sol Lewitt. The result is a body of work that is both physically imposing and intricately wrought. In both paintings and sculptures\, Naifeh takes specific precedents from millennium-old Islamic and Arab prototypes that were inspired by mathematical principles\, removes them from their temporal and material context\, and reimagines them in the world of twentieth-century international art.
