SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Edgar Orlaineta: What We See of Things is the Things
DESCRIPTION:A solo show for the Mexican artist whose practice focuses on hybrid sculptural forms that draw inspiration from modernism\, popular culture\, and specific historic moments. In particular\, Orlaineta explores post-war design and architecture\, generally depicting biomorphic shapes with a strong surrealist influence. \nIn his new body of work\, Orlaineta reflects on the philosophical explorations of perception and essence\, challenging traditional notions of art and the birth point of objects through a profound engagement with materiality and meaning. His exploration of objects as non-functional or decontextualised allows him to strip them down to their purest form: a thing. What is it that differentiates things from objects\, or even from art? How do these things interact with their environment? Is it the environment that gives them meaning\, or vice versa? At what point during the process of making something\, does it actually become something? \nThrough his works\, Edgar Orlaineta seeks to eliminate any pre- conceptualised notions of the depicted objects\, reducing them to what they appear as to the naked eye: things.

SUMMARY:Dance Will Be You
DESCRIPTION:Efie Gallery continues its commendable promotion of artists of African origin with this group show featuring María Magdalena Campos-Pons\, ahead of her debut solo exhibition in the Middle East at Efie in April\, alongside works by JK Bruce-Vanderpuije\, Dina Nur Satti and Myles Igwebuike. The gallery says the exhibition “offers a nuanced exploration of the symbolic and performative dimensions within contemporary African art\, focusing on themes of contemplation\, devotion\, and transcendence – each of which resonates with deeper cultural narratives. \nIt’s certainly an interesting group: María Magdalena Campos-Pons is an internationally acclaimed artist whose work explores themes of memory\, identity\, and history\, drawing from her Cuban and Yoruba heritage. JK Bruce-Vanderpuije (1899 – 1989)\,has an extensive archive of photography documenting the cultural history from West Africa. Dina Nur Satti creates ceramics deeply influenced by her studies of African art and pre-colonial African societies. And Myles Igwebuike explores the Mbari houses of Igbo culture in his design practice. \nTo 26 March. \nAbove: Myles Igwebuike\, Echichie (2024)

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Alyazia Al Nahyan: In the Breath of Decay
DESCRIPTION:A solo show for the Emirati artist to open this new gallery in Abu Dhabi’s Mina al Zayed. Al Nahyan’s practice is based on foraging — materials she collects on her walks through her family farm and elsewhere\, are accentuated in the shapes they leave behind after being subjected to bleach and vinegar. Nadine Khalil\, who curates the exhibition\, describes Al Nahyan as “an artist who lets the natural world take the lead in her process of mark-making … She is interested in how a landscape can hold memories and renders this thought in subtle\, abstract works that represent both zoomed-out and magnified perspectives”. \n

SUMMARY:Whale Rider: dir Niki Caro (2002)

SUMMARY:Mississippi Masala: dir Mira Nair (1991)
DESCRIPTION:The vibrant cultures of India\, Uganda\, and the American South come together in Mira Nair’s Mississippi Masala\, a luminous look at the complexities of love in a modern melting pot. Years after her Indian family was forced to flee their home in Uganda by the dictatorship of Idi Amin\, twentysomething Mina (Sarita Choudhury) spends her days cleaning rooms in an Indian-run motel in Mississippi. When she falls for the charming Black carpet cleaner Demetrius (Denzel Washington)\, their passionate romance challenges the prejudices of both of their families and exposes the rifts between the region’s Indian and African American communities. Tacking through thorny issues of racism\, colourism\, culture clash\, and displacement with bighearted humor and keen insight\, Nair serves up a sweet\, passionate\, and deeply satisfying celebration of love’s power.

SUMMARY:Bygones
DESCRIPTION:What does it mean to come from a home that does not exist today? The artworks in this exhibition examine the idea of true foreigners – whose left-behind homes exist not only in a different place\, but also in a different time. Bygones was born out of a longing for community\, and reflects on the trials and tribulations of holding onto a homeland when one relates wholeheartedly to what it once was\, but what it is no longer. \nThis is a deeply personal exhibition for curator Anita Shishani\, who has included her own paintings\, weaving her voice into the dialogue visually. Artists Anastasia A\, Alla Abdunabi\, Aya Afaneh\, Houssam Ballan\, Bady Dalloul\, Hala El Abora\, Zaina El-Said\, Syed Hussain\, Diana Ishaqat\, Pouran Jinchi\, Anuar Khalifi\, Yoonsik Chico Park\, and Ansadat Zumsoy have contributed their work. \nTo 11 February. \nThere’s an accompanying public programme in the Art Gallery Reading Room: \n17 January 6.30pm Writing Workshop: How to Return as if You Never Left – Yesmine Abida\n21 January 630pm Curator Talk – Anita Shishani\n24 January 6.30pm Artist Talk – Aysha Hamkari\, The History of Circassian Dance\n4 February 6.30pm Poetry Writing Workshop – Aya Afaneh

SUMMARY:Remote Al Ain by Rimini Protokoll
DESCRIPTION:Rimini Protokoll pushes the boundaries of conventional theatre. During this performance walk within the collective’s ‘Remote X’ series (2013–ongoing)\, you are invited to explore the growing presence of artificial intelligence in future cities; for this tour\, designed specifically for Al Ain\, you wear headphones (provided) and are guided by a computer-generated voice (in Arabic or English) into familiar and unfamiliar sites “that emerge as if from an imagined film”. \nThe starting point is Al Jahili Fort. \nThe Rimini Protokoll experience is remarkable and can be eye-opening; the collective has done Abu Dhabi a couple of times in the past\, as part of early Abu Dhabi Art extras\, and we’d heartily recommend the trip … \nThis is part of the Public Art Abu Dhabi Biennial. \nFuture dates: \n25 January \n9 February\n23 February \n6 April\n13 April\n20 April\n27 April \n

SUMMARY:Public Art Abu Dhabi Biennial: Bik Van der Pol’s The poem that jumps the fence
DESCRIPTION:Artist duo Bik Van der Pol (Liesbeth Bik and Jos Van der Pol) engage in collaborative projects on how art constructs public spaces for speculative thought and collective creativity. The poem that jumps the fence features weekly performances on Abu Dhabi Beach and workshops connecting words and sand as real and symbolic material that binds our world; every Sunday afternoon\, a performer writes a poem in the sand\, only for it to fade away. During workshops in collaboration with local poets and writers\, participants generate text for the performances. \n  \n

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Nabil Anani: The Land and I
DESCRIPTION:Nabil Anani has been focussed on painting landscapes for over two decades. His work demonstrates how the land is central to his identity and existence\, and how it is also integral to its people; in The Land and I\, Anani sees himself as inseparable from the earth he paints. \nThe exhibition features textured and colourful paintings of the Palestinian landscape\, a celebration of Palestine that he dreams of – nature\, without checkpoints\, cement barriers\, or settlements. He often uses natural materials\, like wood\, straw\, dried herbs\, seeds\, and spices\, infusing his paintings with the very elements of the earth that he  portrays. By grounding his art in the materiality of the land itself\, Anani seeks to reclaim the Palestinian landscape from the continuous attempts of colonial erasure\, emphasising the sense of attachment\, belonging\, and continuity.

SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Lamya Gargash: Kun
DESCRIPTION:Through her work\, Gargash delves into spirituality\, transformation\, and the human journey. Her first solo exhibition with the Maraya Art Centre has a title – kun means ‘to be’ – that reflects the exploration of a liminal state between different phases of being\, where transitions occur from one state of mind to another; Gargash aims to create an intervention that evokes a sense of journey\, path\, and guidance and fosters a deep understanding of connectivity. This intervention will be a long gold fabric integrated into the various spaces curated by the compass and its direction; the gold fabric will drape and cover any element crossing its path\, concealing them.

SUMMARY:Hot Spots
DESCRIPTION:The second in The Gallery Collective\, a series of sort-of gallery takeovers whereby Sotheby’s Dubai is giving its DIFC exhibition space over to a series of local galleries in a two-year run starting in November. Every six to eight weeks\, a partner gallery will curate a show in the space; this time it’s Tabari Artspace and Third Line. Showcasing a range of artists from across the Middle East and North Africa\, the title draws inspiration from the language and codes of advertising\, particularly the vocabulary used in travel marketing; “by adopting this commercial vernacular\, the exhibition brings forward deeper themes of human movement\, cultural attachment\, and globalisation”. SUMMARY:LAST CHANCE Adel El Siwi: Yellow Tropics
DESCRIPTION:El Siwi’s first solo exhibition in over a decade features both new paintings and pieces from an archive of earlier works: “the paintings shown here collectively present philosophical provocations and musings” says the gallery. The title references Upper Egypt and the origin of man\, but also Egypt’s literal reach towards its African neighbours\, hinting at a desire to reclaim an element of identity as part of the Continent: “it is not simply Egypt’s Islamic and Mediterranean history and culture that inform his country’s identity\, but according to El Siwi\, a longer and earlier one … A conjuring of a shared Continental history of Africa\, and a desired alignment by the artist artistically and emotionally with a greater story of identity and history\, has resulted in an oeuvre unlike many artists of his generation”.
